In advance of the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010, the Canadian Environmental Network is launching a Best Practices/Case Studies Contest to gather innovative and effective examples of environmental non-governmental organizations’ ENGOs work related to the conservation, sustainable use, and awareness of biodiversity.

convention on biological diversityThe “winning” case studies and best practices will be featured in a 20-page handbook that will be included as an annex to Canada’s Fourth National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity in preparation of the tenth meeting of the Parties to the Convention from October 18-29, 2010 in Nagoya, Japan. Our aim is to include one best practice/case study from each province and territory. If your best practice or case study is selected, you will receive $200 to write a 1-2 page summary to be included in the handbook.

Ontario Women's Health Netwok

The Ontario Women’s Health Network (OWHN) is a network of individuals and organizations that promotes women’s health. OWHN works with women, health and social service providers, community organizations and others to support equitable, accessible and effective health services for all women in Ontario.

Our mission is to link women to health information and resources; and to address the health and healthcare barriers faced by women in Ontario, particularly women who are marginalized, through our research and advocacy work.

Our vision is a society in which every woman is provided with the opportunity to achieve, sustain and maintain health as defined by the woman herself, to her full potential.

Sudbury

The Good Food Box is a fresh fruit and vegetable distribution system operated by the Sudbury Good Food Box Committee. It runs like a large buying club, with centralized purchasing and co-ordination. Individuals place orders for boxes with volunteer host-site coordinators in their neighborhood and volunteers pack the boxes. Each Good Food Box contains the same mixture of top quality vegetables and fruit, though the contents change with each delivery, depending on what is in season and reasonably-priced at the time.

Under the guidance and with support from the Sudbury Good Food Box Committee the Good Food Box Coordinator is responsible for planning and implementing the Good Food Box project, including developing operational policies and procedures.

The coordinator will be responsible for volunteer recruitment and management; produce ordering; maintaining a produce database; customer service; promotion of the Good Food Box to the community of Greater Sudbury; and developing and producing a monthly newsletter.

The successful candidate will have experience in project management, and be an enthusiastic and results-oriented individual with strong organizational, interpersonal, multi-tasking, and communication skills. Previous experience in relationship building and volunteer development will help in this position. This key position requires someone with self-motivation, computer skills, and a post-secondary degree. Fluency in French is considered an asset.

This one year internship is funded by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. Applications must be graduates of a Northern Ontario Secondary school, be 29 years of age or under who recently graduated from an accredited college or university.

Cette personne est en charge de recruter et de s’occuper des bénévoles; de commander les produits; de garder à jour une base de données des produits; du service à la clientèle; de faire la promotion de la Boîte de bonne bouffe dans la collectivité du Grand Sudbury; et de rédiger et préparer un bulletin chaque mois.

Nous recherchons une personne ayant de l’expérience dans la gestion de projet qui sait faire preuve d’enthousiasme et se préoccupe d’obtenir des résultats; cette personne a beaucoup de compétences en organisation, en relations interpersonnelles, en communication et peut travailler sur plusieurs choses à la fois. De l’expérience dans le développement des relations ainsi que la gestion des bénévoles serait utile. Ce poste nécessite quelqu’un faisant preuve de motivation personnelle, pouvant utiliser les ordinateurs et détenant un diplôme postsecondaire. La capacité de travailler en français serait un atout.

Ce stage d’un an est subventionné par la Société de gestion du Fonds du patrimoine du Nord de l’Ontario. Moonlight Hike & Wolf Howl - July 4, July 31 & August 7, 2009

Better Beginnings Better Futures - Sudbury

The Aboriginal Hub of Better Beginnings Better Futures in collaboration with R. Murray Schafer, Community Arts & Heritage Education Project and many other arts partners, announces the first celebration and official Launch of the Spirit Garden Project.

What: The Spirit Garden celebrates the cycle of planting and harvesting - birth, maturing, death and rebirth. The work takes the form of the ritual planting of a real garden by the audience and consists of two parts: Spring planting and fall harvest. The garden is prepared and when the audience arrives for the Celebration, they will be divided into seed groups and will plant the garden amid singing and ritual celebration!

When: Saturday June 6^th, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.

Why: Arts and heritage education is a catalyst for creative thinking and lifelong learning. Me & the Maccabi

This July I, Stephanie Fisher, have the amazing opportunity to represent my country (and my community) in the 3^rd largest athletic event in the entire world. I have been selected to play for the National Volleyball Team that will represent Canada at the 2009 Maccabi Games in Israel.

Sometimes referred to as the “Jewish Olympics”, the Maccabi Games are held every four years in Israel attracting the most outstanding Jewish athletes from around the world.

As one of the largest elite athletic competitions in the world, the Maccabi Games features over 7000 athletes from over 50 countries. Also, the standards of the Maccabi competitions are so elite that the Maccabi Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as “an international sports federation of Olympic standing.” The IOC’s sanction of these games is a clear indication of the high caliber of the athletes that participate in the Maccabi Games.

Twelve young women from across the country were selected to play for Canada’s National Volleyball team for the Maccabi Games and I was fortunate to be one of those individuals.  I am one of only four Ontarians on this team and I am in the only person from Northern Ontario that will be representing Canada in the 2009 Maccabi Games. To represent my country and this great community at such a high level is not only a great honour but also a dream come true.

BizPaL is an online service that benefits Canadian businesses by helping them identify which permits and licences they require and how to obtain them. Entrepreneurs simply answer a series of questions on the type of business they want to start or expand and the activities they plan to undertake. BizPaL then automatically generates a list of all required permits and licences from all levels of government, along with basic information on each, and links to government sites where the entrepreneur can learn more and, in some cases, apply online.BizPaL also benefits governments by making it easier for them to provide accurate information on permits and licences to business. Although the service is offered online, it can also be used through other service channels (i.e., telephone and in-person centres) to extend services to more clients.

To date, 11 provinces and territories are participating in BizPaL, with more than 300 municipalities offering the service.

Industry Canada is the lead federal department for the BizPaL initiative, supporting the centralized functions of the project. The Government of Canada is fully committed to creating a competitive business environment that supports innovation and reduces red tape. BizPaL is a complementary measure within the government’s success in reducing the paperwork burden on small businesses by 20 percent.

The success of BizPaL is due in part to the multi-jurisdictional partnership among federal, provincial, territorial, regional and local governments. The partnership operates under a shared governance and costing model with collaborative decision making. Each jurisdiction is responsible for adding and maintaining its own information in BizPaL.
