Causing hearts to flutter was Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, one of the parade’s three Grand Marshalls (along with activist legends Cleve Jones and Anne Kronenberg). Black is not only a talented writer but cute, with a winning smile, crafted exclusively for our camera!

2. Girl of Many Talents

No parade would be complete without drag queens and New York boasts some of the nation’s most original ladies-who-happen-to-be-gentlemen. The best ones are not just beautiful, or well made-up—they’re often talented dancers, seamstresses, and even jugglers.

Not only the parade is great fun; the crowd watching is just as entertaining. Especially when lusty, muscular guys in Speedos and police hats hand out invites to exclusive parties (or was it a massage website?).

Describe the sensation you get after you make a killer find.
Disappointed, usually - because it's typically either a.) out of my budget range, or b.) it's too big to fit! Lately, even x-tra small is a bit too loose for my taste. I prefer a super snug wardrobe. However, when I do find that perfect piece that makes me go "OMG - WTF - THAT'S HOT!" and if it's TRULY an x-tra small, and within my budget; then I feel absolutely overwhelmed with unspeakable joy :-)

Do you put a lot of effort into selecting the perfect underwear?
Honestly, I really don't - and I usually catch a lot of heat for this, because all of my friends seem to go gaga over a hot pair of skivvies. I simply can't bring myself to obsess over the part of the outfit that's seen least by others . . .

Are you a product junkie?
I prefer to refer to my collection of products as my "condiments, and embellishments," because I view myself as a food item, and a scrap book page! Ha. And YES! I absolutely am a product junkie, keeping in mind that I don't only refer to hair styling equipment as product. My "smell goods," fragrances, makeup, accessories (embellishments) all fall within that category as well.

Where do you shop?
I tend to follow the sales.

Do you tend to be attracted to men with style similar to yours? Or the exact opposite?
I find myself to be attracted to men of a wide range of styles; from emo - to uber trendy, absolutely everything in between.

Is there a particular accessory you can't live without?
Stunna Shades (aviators). In a WIDE array of bold and bright colours - neon green, pink, purple, red...
Lately, I've been on a quest for peace (you can read more about that on my profile). And sometimes I forget that peace, for a large part, can be found within ourselves - so, as a reminder, I wear a wooden peace sign around my neck. Whenever I feel that things are getting a bit topsy-turvy, I hold my hand over my peace symbol, and whisper the word "peace," and then peace comes :-)
My collection of accessories is as colourful as it is large! I feel that one's accessories should reflect something about them. I have a very colourful personality, and adore attention (I'm a Leo); therefore, my accessories (and wardrobe) are very very colourful.

Where do you get your style information? People on the street? Mags? Celebs?
I draw inspiration from nearly every medium.

What are your three favorite articles of clothing and why?
My neon green flip flops. They look fierce when I wear my purple stunna shades!
My zip-up hoodie. Because it's form-fitting, and keeps me toasty when there's a chill in the air.
My cerulean v-neck from American Eagle (are we allowed to mention brand names?) - because it compliments my eyes very nicely.

Is there one person you tend to go shopping with more than anyone else? Why?
MYSELF! I don't like to be rushed, and I find shopping alone is very therapeutic ... I also like to listen to my mp3 player while browsing. My music (usually ABBA or Beyonce) gives me the divine inspiration I need to pick out the perfect pieces for the wardrobe :-)

If you want to go out and get attention, do you have one foolproof outfit that does the trick?
Absolutely: The blue v-neck, with tons of coloured wrist bands, a pair of gripping jeans that accentuate the junk in my trunk (and trust - there's a lot to accentuate) .. my neon green flips, and my green stunna shades (they glow really brightly under black light)!

Are you environmentally conscious when you purchase clothing?
Not really, altho - I do have a lot of green in my wardrobe! Does that count?

When buying shoes and clothing, is comfort or style more important?
Style. But comfort is definitely very very important. If you're savvy enough, you can have the best of both worlds!

Dating Bradford: Pride Points

Every year at Thanksgiving I say “Hmmm… what am I thankful for this year?” Then I make a mental list and toast some theoretical champagne and in some small way it makes me feel appreciative for all that I have.

So then Gay Pride comes around and I started thinking, “Hmmm…what the HELL am I proud of this year, I’m still single for f*ck sake?!?”

Then it occurs to me that, well, I guess it could be worse. At least my family accepts and supports me being gay. Even my conservative Republican Christian cousins have come around - and that’s saying a lot, because I’d much rather hear anti-Obama comments at the table, than anti-gay whispers behind my back. Think about how many people get ostracized from their families just because of their sexual preference? How sad is that?

So if I were tallying up points in favor of things to be proud of this year, family acceptance counts for at least one on the pride scale.

Then I thought, well, I’ve been pretty lucky in the past to have had four loving boyfriends in my life ranging from 1 to 5 years each, and I’ll be damned if I’m not going to find another one soon before my maquillage cracks off. So having the ability to love someone - especially over all the ingrained taboos around same-sex blah, blah, blah - is certainly something to be proud of. Think of all the people who can’t get over those social hurdles, or get stuck beneath a painful past? I’ve certainly dated a number of them - intimacy issues anyone?

So, as obvious as it may seem, having the capacity to share love and intimacy with another person is worth a pride point.

What about freedom of expression? I’ve got that in spades – not merely because I have this wonderful venue to write for, but the fact that I don’t have to live in the closet and can travel the world with my gay head held high. That’s something I’m proud of for sure. Think of how many people have to hide their homosexuality? How not fun is that, and where's a pink boa to dance with before the buzz-kill sets in?

So freedom of expression is certainly worth a point or two in my book.

Come to think of it, I have a lot to be proud of. The fact that I made it through fucking High School with my self-esteem at a salvageable level should win me a Tony in itself, and all the rest of us for that matter who managed not to commit suicide during those dreadful years. But how about all those troubled teens who did commit suicide - or attempted to - because they just couldn’t deal with being gay? We all could have used some pride points early on, but why does it take so long to find them?

Overcoming our own demons - not just about being gay - but about feeling, “I’m not good enough” or that we’re not capable of true self-acceptance is universally challenging. How many people do we know that struggle with low self-esteem?

Yeah, practically everyone right? Guilty here.

We should all be proud that we’re able to face those demons, because as housebroken as we make them, they never get fully tamed. Sooner or later one's going to shit on the carpet.

Being proud that we're strong enough to keep our demons leashed earns us all a premium in pride points.

It makes me wonder:

When water-skiing on the lake of life
Over whitecaps and debris our skis may find strife
What then find we when let go the rope
Make us feel proud when safe in our boat?

So I ask you: What are YOU proud of this year?

I do I love undies there is nothing less attractive then when your guy takes down his pants revealing an old worn out pair of ripped boxers... Well there are a few things less attractive but that's way up there.

How much time a day do you spend on your hair?
Under 5 min

Are you a product junkie?
Not at all - I like my hair to look and feel like hair. It shouldn't be breakable.

Where do you shop?
Anywhere I happen to be budget wise I love second hand stores - also I like h&m American Apparel, and when I really want to break the budget I'll be at Lechateau.

Do you tend to be attracted to men with style similar to yours? Or the exact opposite?
More my style so we can share clothes (laughs).

A gimp bracelet I made at camp ...

My sister and my best friend, I'm pretty thrifty and they are not at all so they convince me to buy things that I like even when I shouldn't.

Umm not really I sometimes wear my tie as a belt and it's a great conversation opportunity.

Umm well I ask not to have the bag... but that's it.

Not nearly enough...

PrideWatch: Denver

If there was ever a sleeping gay giant in the United States, you would find him (or her...or hir!) at the Denver PrideFest, which takes place on the weekend of June 27-28. The 34th annual celebration will see an attendence of over 250,000 people, which includes the estimated 100,000 parade attendees - now that's nothing to turn your nose up at.

Although the week leading up to PrideFest has a few events, Saturday will kick off (spike off?) bright and early with an all-day volleyball tournament. Organized by the Colorada Gay Volleyball Association, the first game starts at 8 a.m. Other speciality events include the Denver Dyke March, taking place for the first time ever! Starting at 3 p.m. at Charlies, the march down Colfax will finish off with "women-focused entertainment" on two stages at Civic Center Park. The all-day stage lineup includes the Denver Women's Chorus, the Drag Kingz of Transcend, singer/songwriter Jill Brzezicki, the Shelvis & Dancehall Girlz Show, and more.

Saturday's celebrations also includes the Latino stage located at the corner of Colfax and Banno, with dance instruction, performances by Ballet Folklorico and haunting Mariachi music by Antonio Reyna. A day for family celebration, the Civic Center Park will have all sorts of entertainment for all ages, food and beverage stands, retail and commercial booths, and even a Dogs in Drag Parade (seriously!). For the main stage, SIRIUS radio personality Romain Paterson emcees,

However Sunday's parade, which expects up to 100,000 attendees, will begin at 10 a.m. at Cheesman Park and heads towards a second day of festivities at the Civic Center Park. The theme is "Worldwide Pride...Connect the Dots," which spreads awareness of pride events all over the globe: Denver's links up with Phillipino city Baguio. The after party, which has hosted big acts like Tiffany and Martha Wash in the past, will feature Cleopatra Jones, RuPaul's Drag Race finalist Nina Flowers, and several stage events featuring gay icon Matthew Rush.

If you're itching to see Colorado during the hot season, Denver Pride recommends three properties to rest your head: the Curtis Hotel and the Magnolia Hotel both offer special $99 a night rates for the events, just ask for the special PrideFest rate. There's also a Residence Inn that offers a special rate. Wake the sleeping giant, cause he (she? zee?) will want to party with the massive crowd at one of the United States' top ten Pride Celebrations!

Insider Guide: Vancouver Pride

Outstandingly attractive, impressively athletic and gastronomically blessed, Vancouver is a truly enticing destination. It's such an appealingly integrated city that it was chosen to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The proliferation of gay life and gay businesses along rainbow flag-bedecked Davie Street underscores the fact that 35 percent of the West End's towers are gay-occupied. Lesbian enclave Commercial Drive is also home to ever-more LGBT inhabitants. In reality, though, Vancouver's gay community is well integrated citywide, woven through the city's fabric at every level.

With plenty of long summer days and nights kept cool by Pacific breezes, Vancouver is an ideal place to saunter streets, parks, and beaches till it's time to take to the sidewalk tables of its myriad restaurants. During Pride, temperatures regularly peak in the high 80s, making outdoor parties and cruises on the Burrard Inlet a sunny delight.

Vancouver Pride (July 28-Aug. 2) celebrates 31 years in style, with more than 500,000 people expected to attend parade-day festivities, spanning 20 blocks through the city. The 2009 theme is "Educate, Liberate and Celebrate!"

Hot tickets

Life is a rainbow roller coaster at the official Gay Day at Playland (PNE, East Hastings Street; July 18; 10 a.m.-8 p.m.) Wear red while at the park to show your Pride.

There will be two blocks' worth of dancing in the street for the popular Davie Street Dance Party (Davie Street between Burrard and Bute streets; July 31; 7 p.m.-Midnight.), a free street party in the gay village, featuring a hot line up of DJs and a giant Twister game!

Ladies taste the good life during Pride weekend with Flygirl's famous Chicas afternoon dance party at the mansion house, nighttime HerShe dance party, and a boat cruise (www.flygirlproductions.com). Get tickets early or you'll miss the boat.

The Vancouver Pride Society and GAB Youth present the Pride Youth Dance (West End Community Centre; Aug. 2; 9pm) Patrons must be 25 or under to attend.

Insider tip

HSBC's globe-trotting Celebration of Light international fireworks competition (Canada's entry is July 22; Soth Africa on July 25 and China's entry on Aug. 1), each starting 10 p.m. at English Bay; www.celebration-of-light.com) is a must-see event so big that Pride is actually planned around it. Get to the West End early to stake out your view, since droves of Vancouverites turn out for the show, or head to the beaches at Kitsilano or Jericho to combine fireworks, city and mountain views.

Stay close to the action

The chic Pacific Palisades (1277 Robson St.; 604-688-0461; www.pacificpalisadeshotel.com), a firm favorite of the film and TV set, is enthusiastically recommended. With 233 spacious studios and one-bedroom suites, stunning views, funky decor, a smorgasbord of in-room amenities, top-of-the-range health club and impressive (and friendly) service, the Palisades is ideally situated for shopping and socializing. The mouthwatering international tapas menu in the Palisades' restaurant Zin (see below) is another major draw to this Kimpton property.

As glitteringly beautiful as Vancouver itself, the Opus Hotel (322 Davie St.; 604-642-6787; www.opushotel.com) adds boutique-hotel chic to already hip Yaletown, mere steps from downtown shopping and the gay West End. The 97 guestrooms encompass seven floor plans, designed in five distinct "personalities" themed to reflect the urbane clientele.

The faded old Sylvia Hotel (1154 Gilford St.; 604-681-9321; www.sylviahotel.com) is a good all-around deal. This small historic hotel (119 rooms) is smack in the middle of the West End, just a few steps from the beach on English Bay, and has beautiful ocean views at a reasonable price. Rooms are clean and presentable; corridors and common areas have seen (many) better days. A cozy bar (mostly straight) in the lobby makes a good meeting place. Opt for a bay-view room and enjoy fabulous views of the beach, Kitsilano and fireworks competition.

Eat out

When this vibrant city's neon skyline and the lights of Gracie's Necklace (the Lion's Gate Bridge) start to glow, dive into C (2-1600 Howe St.; 604-681-1164; www.crestaurant.com) on the waterfront just across False Creek from Granville Island. Try the scallops wrapped in octopus bacon -- yes, that's "bacon" made from smoked octopus, and it's utterly delicious. C's wine list boasts a fine selection of B.C. vintages.

Bin 941 (941 Davie St; 604-683-1246) is one of Vancouver's best-kept secrets. A tapas parlor with inventive bites and excellent wines by the glass, this is a seriously slim venue with enthusiastic queues for its few tiny tables and its haystacks of pommes frites.

The Asian-street-food-inspired Flying Tiger (2958 W. 4th Ave.; 604-737-7529; www.theflyingtiger.ca) is worth making a diversion to Kitsilano. Cute chef Tina Fineza serves up sumptuous tastes from the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, Korea and Vietnam with flair and enthusiasm.

Out and proud

Vancouver's two newer gay venues, The Majestic (1138 Davie St.; 604-669-2013) and lounge 1181 (1181 Davie St.; 604-687-3991; www.tightlounge.com) are welcome additions to the buzzy Davie strip. Enjoy drag brunch or tasty, strong cocktails at the voluminous Majestic or be seen at slick 1181 across the street. For your later evening entertainment, the big club in town, Celebrities, (1022 Davie St.; 604-681-6180; www.celebritiesnightclub.com) is popular with a young and pretty set (both male and female) and is packed six nights a week.

PrideWatch: Barcelona

It may come as a surprise to some that Barcelona, capital of Catalonia and a world-recognized gay destination, has never had an official Gay Pride celebration! Pride Barcelona will be an eight-day event starting June 20 full of cultural activities, sports, politics, a gorgeous parade and - you guessed it - one hell of an afterparty.

In the week leading up to the parade on June 28, a slew of gay art events, film viewings and political discussions are scheduled; From June 22 through 26 is MosTrans, the International Trans-Intersex Film Festival of Barcelona, featuring a full program kicking off with talks by filmmaker and activists Elliat Graney-Saucke and Col Cruise, director of the 2008 London Transgender Film Festival; Grup d'Amics Gais (GAG) will host several events, including photo exhibition starting Monday (held at Punto BCN through July 15), a panel on Gay history in Spain, and a presentation of Iguales - a documentary by Maria Popova in conjunction with Independent Cat Films.

Sunday is the big day - the first ever Pride parade in Barcelona! Starting at Plaça Universitat at 5 p.m., the parade will travel along carrer Sepúlveda towards Plaça d'Espanya and finish up on Avinguda Maria Cristina for the post-parade festivities. Organizers promise further partying on the floats, with live music "a large bar area," and places to get food, drink, and general enjoyment. If we here are any gauge of Barcelonian hospitality, this parade after-party will be a fête to remember, with plenty of tasty sangria, delicious Catalan food, and, of course, sexy Catalan boys and girls to flirt with! At 10 p.m. the main nighttime party begins, with live performances and DJs such as Monstruos de Ibiza, Victor Naranjo, Sergi Cuho, DJ Steven Redant, the Chancletes Disco Móvil, and many more.

Bars and clubs all over town are hosting LGBT pride specials and happy hours all week, and especially Sunday night - a full listing is available on the website but check out Metro, Organic, New Chaps, Arena Madre, Boyberry, among many others in this notorious party town.

As a side note, for those looking to start off the Sunday with some exercise, Pateres Grogues is hosting a bike tour of Avinguda Maria Cristina (preparing you for the actual event) and an exhibition of "natació sincronizada masculina," or "male synchronized swimming." This fun event is also a pool party, the "Bath of Pride" ("Bany per l'Orgull" in Catalan, and "Baño por el Orgullo" in Spanish. All of this activity (including a family picnic with the Associació de Families Lesbianes i Gais) promises a uniquely Catalán experience - a great way to know the gay culture in this region of Spain, and experience the sights, sounds, and people at their proudest!
