Maryland to recognize gay marriages from other places

My home state of Maryland is recognizing Same-Sex Marriages from other states...soon enough they will allow gay and lesbian couples the right to marry within state lines and have it acknowledged and recognized all the same. Until then, I won't complain but congratulate them on moving forward!

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler (D) declared Wednesday that Maryland will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere and that its agencies should immediately begin affording gay married couples the same rights as heterosexual ones.

With Gansler's decision, Maryland in effect joins the District and a handful of states including New York that recognize same-sex marriages performed in four New England states and Iowa. The District also has its own measure legalizing those unions that is expected to take effect next week.

Gansler, a supporter of legalizing same-sex marriages, was asserting his authority as the top legal adviser to state agencies to answer a question that experts say had been left unclear by Maryland law. He was responding to a legislator's request that he issue an opinion.

The attorney general's opinion unleashed a torrent of emotions from both gay rights advocates and those opposed to same-sex marriage, adding a potentially explosive issue to election-year politics in Maryland. It is likely to be quickly challenged in court, Gansler acknowledged.

Republicans, socially conservative Democrats and several African American lawmakers from Prince George's County to Baltimore blasted the decision. One Republican lawmaker vowed to bring articles of impeachment against Gansler for trying to usurp Maryland law, which defines marriage within the state as between a man and a woman. The Roman Catholic archbishops of Washington and Baltimore and the bishop of Wilmington said in a statement that they take "strong exception" to the decision.

In an attempt to become more present and relevant, I finally got a cell phone with internet. I've been behind the times for about 5 years and after constant harassment and embarrassment thanks to my friends, I upgraded and got myself a blackberry. Now comes the fun part! I can facebook, twitter, email, , downelink, get linked in, get linked up, social stalk damn near everyone and allow them to do the same - what joy!

"In case you didn’t know, February is Black History Month", says afterellen.com although Im sure most of us in the US learned of BH Month during, say, childhood - I'm sure there are more than a few who don't bother to recognize or even celebrate..but not here!

I wanted to spotlight, Afterellen.com for highlighting two African American women who are doing their thing in the entertainment biz, producer, director and writer, Angela Robinson and my girl, actress Jasika Nicole. Congrats to the pair of them!

38-year-old Angela Robinson is a film and TV producer, director, and writer who has been involved with a host of queer projects, including executive producing several episodes of The L Word. Robinson directed the 2005 satirical spy film D.E.B.S., which starred Jordana Brewster and Sara Foster in an unlikely lesbian relationship, as well as the always-stunning Meagan Good as simply badass in general. Among Robinson’s most recent projects is Girltrash!, the black-and-white online webseries that stars lesbian favorites Rose Rollins, Gabrielle Christian, Mandy Musgrave and Margaret Cho. Robinson’s ability to create fun and sexy films while subversively incorporating her ideas about gender and sexuality politics has brought queer women’s agenda to a more mainstream audience. Her commitment to portraying diverse lesbian and bisexual women in the media has also given voices to the many queer women who are often ignored from mainstream media. For Robinson’s impressive work from D.E.B.S. to The L Word to her upcoming Girltrash! movie, her overall contributions to the realm of queer women and queer women of color make her an exemplar of the continued progress towards increased visibility in the media.

As a young black actress, Jasika Nicole is living proof that a woman can be out in public and still land great roles (read: not a homicidal lesbian vampire) on TV, like her current role as FBI Special Agent Astrid Farnsworth in Fox’s sci-fi series Fringe. Nicole’s refusal to hide her sexuality from the industry is encouraging for other females in the spotlight to freely express themselves as well while simultaneously maintaining a successful career. Furthermore, Nicole is vocal about the intersection of her sexuality with her identity as a black woman, and understands the nuances of having multiple identities — not just the queer one.

Over the past few years, Nicole has garnered a wide following of supporters of her blog, her art, and her burgeoning acting career. Her body of work includes the character Egypt in the Antonio Banderas film Take the Lead, The Return of Jezebel James alongside Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose, and the role of Gisella on Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2005. A Jasika-of-all-traits, she also designs eco-friendly tote bags and is currently developing her comic High Yella Magic into a graphic novel.

Been Away A While...Celebrating Valentine's Day & Things

I must admit, I've been celebrating Valentine's Day for about a week - you know how that goes ; -)

Not to mention we are in the thick of NY Fashion Week and as the gay girls guide, Ive been checking out the shows and working on an e-book, GayGirlsGuide, "Androgynous Guide to Fashion"....a little mix of the masculine with the feminine swirled in high fashion and will have a spring fashion guide in the March Edition of GayGirlsGuide.net. Look out for that in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile I hope all my girls had a wonderful Valentine's Day and are having a beautiful Black History and Black History in the Making Month. Its important to look back on where you came from but its also equally important to make a little history of your own during your time on earth.

Tomorrow, Wednesday night - I suggest checking out this online radio show, Swaggaboi Radio as they dicuss LGBT youth and homlessness. My friend, Mika - owner of Sugar n Spikes recently held an event benefiting the Trinity Place Shelter which houses LGBTQ youth so this is a very important topic to my heart because this could have easily been me when I came out as a teenager.
