Looking for EnvisionTEC EC500 replacement – PowerResins Dark breaking Plasticast investment

Hello everyone,

We are a jewelry manufacturing company in Europe and have been using EnvisionTEC Perfactory printers with EC500 resin for many years.

We used EC500 for direct investment casting with extremely high reliability and virtually 100% successful results in production. The process was fully optimized and repeatable.

Since EC500 is no longer available, we are testing PowerResins Dark (Zero Dark) as a replacement.

Our current investment is R&R Plasticast.

The issue we are facing is not ash residue or incomplete burnout. The problem is that very fine sections of the investment break during burnout. Small and delicate details that survived perfectly with EC500 are now occasionally breaking with PowerResins Dark.

Our burnout cycle:

Ramp to 150°C in 1 hour

Hold 150°C for 3 hours

Ramp to 800°C in 3.2 hours

Hold 800°C for 4.3 hours

Cool to 630°C and hold until casting

I understand that PowerResins recommends a different burnout cycle, and we will test that as well.

My questions are:

Has anyone successfully replaced EC500 with PowerResins Dark?

Did you need to significantly modify your burnout schedule?

Has anyone experienced investment breakage with Plasticast and Dark resin?

Is there another resin that you found closer to EC500 in terms of casting reliability?

Does anyone know of remaining EC500 stock anywhere in Europe or elsewhere?

Any experience from former EnvisionTEC / Perfactory / Aureus users would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Martin

Hi everyone. I’m not a professional jeweler. But I have sculpted/created a replica of a very old ring that had 3 simple cut stones and I would like to actually make the ring for someone. All 3 stones are the same shape, just 2 side stones are slightly smaller then center. The stones have a lot of inclusions, not eye clean so I would actually want poor quality. I can print the ring with settings ready in resin or wax for fitting. Is there someone who might hand cut these simple shapes? Thanks for any info. Center stone would be natural emerald (but lots of inclusions, roughness I have pictures of original) and the 2 side stones would be amethysts but can be close to rose quartz in color as the original amethysts lost a lot of color from 400 years of U.V. light, also not eye clean, very rough. With such a simple cut of stone, I think I need lapidary person, not a gemcutter.

A jewelry maker I follow seems to be a real person with a reasonable product line for an independent maker (as opposed to all the fake artisans on social media with websites full of marked up temu jewelry) but there is one item that stands out to me. They have a collection of these storybook rings, about 6 different designs, and they say they are “hand carved” with “no molds” in sterling silver. To me, this does not look like engraving and “no molds” must mean it’s not cast, and it has that telltale horizontal lines of a laser engraving or 3d-printed wax. I hate to make unkind assumptions so what do you, more experienced, people think?
The maker is US-based and selling these for about $60 or $45 on sale.

Who sells sterling chains with a clasp and two free loops?

I made a pendant with two attachment points, sort of a “Y” shape with loops on the two top ends. But except for a few very thin (1.2mm) “component” chains, nobody seems to sell chains that will accommodate hanging this rather heavy pendant from 2 loops. (I’ve tried doing it myself - cutting and soldering ends on a rope chain, but this resulted in ends that have fused together into a rod on either side.) Does anyone know of a supplier who offers reasonably heavy chains set up this way? I like the way the pendant hangs when it’s hung from two loops instead of one, and I’m surprised that chains like this aren’t easier to find. Am I just looking in the wrong places, or is this something I need to hire a jeweler to do for me?

Two of Leonid Surpin’s DVDs are freely available online! Among so much more.

I’ve posted the links here but they don’t seem to be clickable as a full URL, no idea why. All I can suggest is to piece the following together by copying and then pasting in your browser, and backspacing to remove all of the * characters, or do a search on the website for them.

Leonid Surpin’s Eternity Ring DVD: https://*archive.*org/*details/EternityRing

Leonid Surpin’s Coronet Cluster DVD: https://*archive.*org/*details/CoronetCluster

You’ll have to to investigate the site to grasp the astounding breadth of what is available at https://archive.org/. Books, software, videos, DVDs, magazine back issues like Art Jewelry, and Rock & Gem Magazine, much more.

Look for Advanced Search to help zero in on specifics. If you use the general search box, say for ‘jewelry’ you may also get hits for unrelated things like a Sports Illustrated issue… There is so much here that is jewelry related I can’t begin to describe it, let alone all the rest.

The two Leonid Surpin DVDs came as a great surprise!

Accuracy of DIY Alloy

Hello Ganoksin!

I have a question for you folks doing alloying at home or in the shop. I am interested in trying some of the different silver master alloys in addition to just traditional 7.25% copper sterling silver. However, one thing that keeps coming to mind is the accuracy of the silver content in these DIY sterling alloys. I know some people go a little under with the copper or alloy portion of the sterling so they don’t go below 92.5% silver but how much should I realistically aim for? Do I need a super precise scale? My main concern is eventually selling a piece of jewelry that comes out under 92.5 percent silver. I’ve seen a few videos of people selling jewelry and it coming out slightly under what it is stamped. In these videos the jeweler buying the piece claims they got scammed while it very well may have been a measuring error. It seems to me the scale I use to weigh 5 ounces of silver would not be the best scale to measure grams of copper for alloying as it would need to be sensitive to smaller weights. Just curious how you all deal with this and accuracy of alloying yourself.

Thank you!

My first student just completed his first solo project. Following is a link to a picture. He is actually my son. His daughter is graduating from FIT next week and he wanted to try and make a ring for her as a graduation present. The stone is Afghan Lapis. My son is a journalist who was covering the Afghan war and embedded with the Marines in Fallujah in 2004. In his free time he purchased some Lapis rough for me that I just got around to cutting. With my direction, he cut the stone doing all of the work himself. He had a heavy 14K bracelet that I had made for him back when gold was fairly inexpensive. He wanted to recycle the gold into a bracelet for his wife. We did that project together. There was enough gold left over to make the material needed for the bezel of this ring. The rest of the ring is Sterling made from metal recycled from another bracelet that he had. He did a nice job and there is very little that should have been done differently. Let’s hope that it fits and that he continues to want to learn more about making jewelry…Rob

Hello Ganoksin!

After browsing the forum for about a month or more I finally decided to make an account to hopefully solve some of the problems I’m dealing with.

I’m currently trying to produce Sterling silver wire from my own cast Ingot. I’m making my own Sterling using copper and fine silver. I’ve been able to cast what appear to be good ingots but I have problems when I start to mill, mainly cracking on the edges of the ingot when it starts going from square to round/octagonal. I’ve filed these cracks out and everything looks good until I start running the wire through my draw plate. After the first or second pass I start to get flaking on the wire. It almost looks like fish scales where these flakes are only attached at one point.

I haven’t tried forging the Ingot first as I don’t have a good work surface yet. My process is as follows.

Cast silver in a carved out charcoal block (could never get steel mold hot enough to pour fluidly), let cool, pickle, and file smooth.

Run Ingot through draw plate until metal starts to feel harder or curl. At this point it is less than a 30 percent reduction.

Anneal and repeat drawing/annealing until I get within 1-2mm of my final wire diameter.

Draw wire through draw plate annealing every 3 passes.

The “flakes” seem to persist even after filing them out between steps. Perhaps I’m not annealing correctly? I’ve tried annealing less and more but don’t seem to notice any improvement. It should be noted I’m never able to reach the 30-50 percent reduction that is suggested between annealing as I always see cracking and curling before this point.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hello friends!

I’ve been casting silver at a hobby scale for some years now. But I’ve got an opportunity coming up to help a couple make wedding rings, and they want to cast in gold. I worked with gold once, almost 20 years ago, and it was a fabrication class not a casting class.

I did some browsing in the archives, but I’d love your suggestions too: what will be different about casting gold vs silver? (I’m anticipating 18k yellow but I haven’t confirmed yet.) What are the beginner’s mistakes I can avoid?

We’ve got a fresh crucible, a programmable burn out kiln, and a choice between centrifugal and vacuum casting. They will probably work on waxes first, weigh them and purchase casting grain from Rio, and then we will cast and finish together.
Again, I’ve done plenty of silver casting and I’m confident in that arena, but I don’t know what I don’t know about gold.

Thanks!

I KNOW that this will be a controversial ask simply because there is no hard and one size fits all rule…Looking at the current rollercoaster that is the metal prices daily…is there a way to guess-timate the amount of metal needed (casting grains) for pieces of jewelry aka amt needed for earrings, ring, bracelet, necklace etc…? I only ask because I want to lock in gold $$$ before they get any crazier and need enough lead time to create/cast the pieces and them set stones all before end of the yr…(going by SOOO FAST!)I understand without a wax or reference model it’s hard, but is there a way to at least say for a pair of earrings I need ______ amount…? Thanks!

Hi everyone. I’m more of a hobbyist than a professional jewelry. Who do you all use for sending a 3d model file to be printed in castable wax? I usually do everything in house to keep costs down as a hobby (I rarely sell or do commission work). But I have special project where instead of me casting the final model, I’m handing off the finished castable model to a professional and I don’t stock gold for casting. I usually 3d print in castable resin and just cast things myself. But I’m guessing if you hand off something to someone, they will benefit it from not being a castable resin that each brand has different requirements but want it in wax. Are there recommendations for when you just need like 2 copies printed and can be trusted not to sell/publish the file? Thank you!

My nieces will be visiting (ages 4 & 8) and want to learn how to make jewelry. They don’t want to just string beads. Can you suggest any projects that don’t involve sawing, torches, anything that they can hurt themselves with? I’m thinking circle punched copper that they can texture, hand drill a hole, make into a keychain. Really stumped here. Please help.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for recommendations for making sprues:

Blender Plugins: Are there any specific add-ons that simplify the creation of sprue system ?

Or affordable Standalone Software: If not in Blender, is there any budget-friendly software dedicated to spruing and tree assembly that produces clean STL files ready for 3D printing?

Any tips or workflow suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

Tubogas or gas pipe chain making?

Gas pipe chain making?

Has anyone tried to make a gas pipe or tubo gas chain? From what I can tell it is two strips of thin, flat (I think) metal wrapped around a flattened copper core. I don’t know if the tension of the two flat strips holds it together if they’re interlocked, I’m just really not sure how it’s done, but I would love to have any input seems like a pretty difficult part would be to get a long enough flat strip. I guess you’d have to have two people on your rolling mill keeping tension on the length of the flatten wire, so it doesn’t curve like crazy. If anyone has any experience with this technique, I would love to hear it. It started I think in the 1940s and I’ve seen some brief videos by Bulgari but it looks like they have their flattened wire held on some kind of spooling machine. I did find another website in Italy of someone who said they make it by hand. I emailed him, but he didn’t respond.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

[Toronto, Canada] Looking for a paid mentor

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a master jeweller/trainer/mentor in or near the Toronto, Canada area. I can drive to them or they can come to my own studio so I can learn within the context of my environment and tools.

I self-taught myself for the last year, I know all the basics. Then I followed up with high jewellery training in Italy for about three months and have produced a few 18k gold pieces and have a couple of custom clients. I am working on a new collection to be launched by the end of the year.

I’d like to find a master fine jeweller who I can learn from. Ideally someone I can show what I’ve worked on in the past week and get feedback on how to improve, be more efficient, and anything I may have missed. There may be some stupid questions in the mix. My schedule is super flexible and I’m happy to pay for their time. I work diligently and am easily coached.

I prefer these sorts of arrangements because I have found that I grow a lot faster with 1:1 relationships than in group settings. Clearly doing this in-person would be ideal but I’m also open to remote arrangements.

If anyone is interested, I’d love to chat to get to know you and see if we’re a good fit,

Helen
