The lightup will start tonight at 7:30pm outside Wisma Atria’s INDOCHINE restaurant, on level 1. The world longest chain of light-sticks consisting of about 10,000 red light-sticks will stretch from SingTel’s Comcentre headquarters at Exeter Road through Skate-Park, Orchard Cineleisure, ION, Wisma Atria, Ngee Ann City, Heeren, Centrepoint, Plaza Singapura, Cathay Orchard, Singapore Management University, Raffles City, Esplanade, Collyer Quay, Keppel Road and Vivocity to Siloso Beach (Sentosa). That is about 8.09km long!

World’s Longest Chain Of Light-Sticks Beckons Singapore’s Youth To Come To Where The Bright Lights Dance – Singtel’s ZoukOut 2009

Singapore’s youth will feel the light on the night of the 20th of November, as most parts of the island frequented by young people will be draped in possibly the world’s longest chain of light-sticks. This unique and record-breaking installation is one of the highlights of SingTel’s on-going campaign for ZoukOut, which it is presenting for the fourth consecutive year.

The chain of close to 10,000 specially designed red light-sticks is about 8.09km long, and will stretch from SingTel’s Comcentre headquarters at Exeter Road through Skate-Park, Orchard Cineleisure, ION, Wisma Atria, Ngee Ann City, Heeren, Centrepoint, Plaza Singapura, Cathay Orchard, Singapore Management University, Raffles City, Esplanade, Collyer Quay, Keppel Road and Vivocity to Siloso Beach (Sentosa). Each light-stick bears an invite to “Come where the bright lights dance” at SingTel’s ZoukOut 2009.

The region’s biggest music and dance festival presented by SingTel, will take place on the 12th of December, 2009. Sentosa’s Siloso Beach will be rocked by the vibes of DJs such as Armin Van Buuren, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclair, Ame and Kings of Tomorrow.

“SingTel is pleased to present ZoukOut 2009 for the fourth year running in partnership with Zouk. ZoukOut 2009 is an ideal platform for our customers to be entertained by world-class acts including an impressive line-up of international DJs. This partnership further demonstrates our commitment to reaching out to youths through music and entertaining lifestyle-related activities, and our customers can look forward to more similar events from us,” Ms Sarah Chua, Vice President of Consumer Marketing, SingTel, said.

“ZoukOut is a dusk to dawn event, and bright light-sticks are a common sighting amongst the partygoers. SingTel has hence decided on the deployment of brilliant light-sticks as the invitation to our young customers to the region’s biggest and wildest music & dance festival. At ZoukOut 2009, our customers can also look forward to more delightful surprises at the SingTel VIP zone,” Mr. Derrick Heng, Director of Segment Marketing & Communications, SingTel, said.

ZoukOut 2008 saw SingTel’s customers chilling out on board a specially erected VIP yacht. Customers can gain free entry to ZoukOut 2009 by signing up to any SingTel youth plan. SingTel customers also enjoy free-flow from 8-11pm at the VIP zone, which structure still remains a mystery.

LTA and Google collaborate to help travelers get to their destinations around Singapore faster and easier
Singapore is the first country in the world to launch a comprehensive range and nation-wide coverage of land travel planning tools, from walking to public transit to traffic, on Google Maps

Singapore, November 19, 2009 – With a daily public transport ridership of 6 million travelling by buses, taxi and trains; and more than 870,000 other vehicles on the roads in Singapore, commuters and motorists can now better plan their trips on Google Maps through a unique collaboration between Google and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA). Mapping, directions and route planning for various forms of land transport modes – from buses to trains to cars to even by walking – are now all available for free on Google Maps. Transit and traffic information are also available on mobile devices with Google Maps for Mobile, so commuters and motorists can check the latest updates to make route changes on-the-go.

Singapore is the first country in the world to provide this comprehensive range and nation-wide coverage of land transport options on Google’s global online map platform. Today at the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, LTA’s Chief Executive, Mr Yam Ah Mee, and Google’s Geospatial Technologist, Mr Ed Parsons, launched this new service at maps.google.com.sg/transport.

Under this collaborative effort, LTA provided key transit and traffic information such as live traffic feeds and public bus/MRT routes and schedules. Google combined the high quality of LTA’s transit data, and worked with Quantum Inventions, a Singapore company, to integrate traffic data, on the popular and familiar user interface of Google Maps. The integration of LTA’s information on Google Maps complements existing LTA and third-party travel planning tools for commuters.

Whether a private car owner switching to go by bus or MRT, or a public transit rider choosing to drive or take a taxi, or even one of 10 million international visitors each year finding their way around, the Singapore public can now check all of their land transport options to make an informed decision on the quickest, most convenient route and method to reach their destinations. For example, each time a Google Maps user requests driving directions, the user will be given the opportunity to plan the same trip using public transit – a useful option when the driving route is highlighted as red or experiencing heavy congestion.

“In line with LTA’s vision for a people-centred public transport system, we have launched several initiatives to help commuters better manage their travel time, transfers, and make more informed transport decisions. Recent initiatives include PublicTransport@SG which has received good responses of 679,000 average page views monthly,” said Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chief Executive, LTA. “The collaboration with Google is another step in this direction to make it even easier for the public to plan their trips with transit and traffic information on Google Maps, whether travelling to their nearest shopping mall or across the island to their favourite eating joint.”

“Google’s goal is to bring LTA’s accurate, comprehensive land transport information together on a global mapping platform for easy access, search and use on PCs and mobile phones by millions of Singaporeans and Google Maps users around the world,” said Mr Ed Parsons, Geospatial Technologist, Google. “Google Maps seeks to provide users with tools to help them explore the world around them and working with LTA to improve the daily lives of Singaporeans is an example of how Google can partner with government agencies to serve the public on a national scale.”

Mapplets increase usefulness of Google Maps

Mapplets are useful mini-applications developed by third parties that can be added directly on to Google Maps Singapore. With just a single click of the mouse, users can customize their Google Maps by adding useful tools created just for Singapore.

The three highlighted mapplets on the left navigation panel on maps.google.com.sg are incidents, ERP locations/rates, and cycle routes (from National Parks Board). The incidents mapplet is based on LTA data and displays real-time traffic incidents, constructions, and road closures island-wide. If the traffic looks sluggish, you can find out what is causing it by clicking on the pin to get additional details such as when and where the incident happened.

Other Singapore mapplets can be found in the My Maps directory including petrol station finder, carpark finder, highway cameras and more.

There are two other distributors, MacWay is based in France and Other World Computing based in the USA.

I did not check out MacWay instead I checked out Other World Computing and it does ship to Singapore and best of all it can be paid using PayPal. I got the MacPadd Pro at USD$31.99 and shipping to Singapore cost USD$13.73, so total is USD$45.72. I placed order and paid on the 9th November 2009 and on the 10th November 2009 it was shipped and I received it yesterday on the 18th November 2009. Took only 8 days to reach Singapore shores.

The built is pretty good but the edges can be better as I still see some protruding stuff. Also the back looks way too ugly!

Brother today launches three new P-Touch labellers. My first labeller was from Brother I think back in the early 2000s. I used it to label my books and electrical switches.

Singapore, 18th November 2009 – Brother International Singapore, a leader in home and business IT peripherals that focuses on the ‘Customer-First’ approach, announced today the launch of new P-Touch labellers. Compromising of three models, (PT-90, PT-1090 and PT-1290), the new series features enhanced “Deco Mode”, easy-to-use function keys and have simple chic designs.

“The new P-Touch series adds a creative and fun touch to traditional labelling. Easy to handle thanks to an enhanced look, these three labellers are designed for everyone to get organised in their own style.” said Mr Takeo Shimazu, Managing Director, Brother International Singapore Pte Ltd.

It also appeals to homemakers who need to add date and time to their labels to keep track on the shelf span of food items. The elegant-looking PT-1290 will suit home offices and businesses as they come with business design formats and two font options for a professional output.

These new electronic labelling P-Touch series comes with multiple “Deco Mode” label formatting options, font styles and symbols that enable users to create original labels. Specific models offer up to 15 deco modes and 178 attractive symbols on a large screen (from 12 to 15 characters display) for easy viewing and editing of text.

The new series also features efficient and easy-to-use functions keys. PT-1090’s cable labelling as well as time & date modes are directly accessible on the control panel and allow convenient and time-saving print flag labelling. Also available in each labeller’s menu are function short-cuts that allow quick access to editing tools such as style, auto format, size, memory, etc. All three models are battery-operated for an optimal portability and convenient use. Optional power adapters are also available for purchase for PT-1090 and PT-1290.

Most if not all of the pages in this website is validated as XHTML 1.0 Strict.

WordPress Plugins
I am a WordPress plugins developer however not all the plugins I developed are used on this website as I think plugins like WP-Ban and WP-PostRatings are not necessary as I don’t wish to ban any people from my site or getting my post rated.

I modified only one plugin which is the Breadcrumb plugin by Dan Peverill to have my plugins’ breadcrumbs such as WP-Email and WP-UserOnline displayed using it.

There are also two plugins which I created personally for this website, lesterchan.net Plugin houses several of the functions used in this website and WP-GalleryViewer powers my Gallery. Both of them are not available to the public as it is highly customized to this website.

Today is Li Xiang 25th birthday! This year is a little bit more relax for us as we manage to have the whole day to ourselves.

We had dinner at TWG Tea at Ion Orchard as Li Xiang always wanted to try the dessert and tea there.

The main courses there are a little on the pricey side. It ranges from SGD$27 to SGD$32 and there are like like 5 choices of main course available. Not forgetting the portion is kinda little. I would not recommend having any full meal there.

Shrip Beignets (SGD$27)

Pike Perch Fillet (SGD$28)

On the other hand, the tea and dessert there are pretty good. There are like hundreds of tea selection available which I really do not know how to start choosing. The price starts at SGD$10 per pot, a pot is enough for 2 persons. We ordered the Happy Birthday tea which fits today’s occasion. The Happy Birthday tea is a little fruity!

Happy Birthday Tea (SGD$10.50)

There are some cakes available but we did not order them. Instead we ordered a Carrousel which is basically a very large Macarons filled with Strawberries and their homemade cream. We also did ordered two ala carte Macarons at SGD$2 each. The Macarons at TWG is nice, it is not too sweet.

Carrousel (SGD$10)

Macaron (SGD$2 each)

Total bill amounted to SGD$93.55 after 7% GST and 10% service charge!

We donated SGD$10 to the We Are One charity project at Ion and we are entitled to placed 5 Lego bricks!

Donated To We Are One

Did not watch any movie today because Li Xiang will be having her end-semester FYP presentation tomorrow. Instead we will be watching 2012 this Saturday at midnight at GV Max!

Happy 25th Birthday Penguin! All the best for your studies! Going to graduate soon! Jia You!!!

Inspired by DK’s blog post on Been using Twitter for 3 years and still loving it!, I am determined to get my first tweet. But there is a problem! The 3,200 tweet limit imposed by Twitter.

According to Twitter’s FAQ, it states:

Why can’t I see all my tweets? My tweet count is _,___. Are they lost?
The good news is they’re not lost or gone! We have all your tweets. The bad news is that we currently only allow you to see the 3200 most recent tweets (this could also be construed as good news, as that number could be lower than 3200). The other good news is that we are eventually going to build something that will allow you to see ALL your tweets. Among the gazillion things we want to do to make Twitter better, this hasn’t yet reached the top of our list, which is largely based on what we hear from people like you. At some point, you’ll be able to get on a twime machine, visit your twistory, and tweminisce. That will be a fun day!

That means if you got more than 3,200 tweets, you are pretty much screwed if you want to get your first tweet. There are services like My First Tweet and My Tweet 16 which allows you to get your first tweet.

My Tweet 16 did not have a gracious way of telling user, “hey you got more than 3,200 tweets and hence we can’t obtain your first tweet”. Instead it still displays the so called “your first tweet” which is totally fake if you got more than 3,200 tweets. It is basically listing your (YOUR_CURRENT_TWEET_COUNT – 3200)th tweet.

My First Tweet on the other hand is much better, if you got more than 3,200 tweets it will just prompt you “Sorry, something went wrong. This is what I have recorded as your error: Too Many Tweets.”.

I tried Googling, Binging and Yahooing but still could not get any answers. Suddenly Internet Archive came to my mind! Just enter your Twitter URL which is http://twitter.com/YOUR_USERNAME. For mine, it is http://twitter.com/gamerz.

It should be able to list the archives of your Twitter page, click on the earliest archive and it should bring your to a cache page of your Twitter page during that period. Here is an example http://web.archive.org/web/20080118191247/http://twitter.com/gamerz.

As you can see, it list down all the tweets that you have during that period. That page listed 4 tweets for me which matches the Updates count on that page. And hence the last tweet on that page should technically be your first tweet. There is no way to confirm that till Twitter have a twime machine or something in the future.

Here is my first tweet according to the Internet Archive:

After midterm exams, now comes exams

Front View

Back View

It supports multipoint technology and hence it allows you to pair up to 2 mobile phones with the device.

Back View With Holder

In the package, they give you extra 2 suction cups which is good because when I received my device, one of the suction cup is spoilt and I have to replaced it. Because it is placed continuously under the sun, the rubber of the suction cup may not be able to take the heat after a year or two.

I got a complain with this holder is that when the device is in the holder, I can’t seem to press the volume up or down button.

Micro USB

There are 3 ways of charging this device, USB port via your desktop or laptop, USB Port car charger which is included in the package or using solar. The USB port on the device is using Micro USB. I wish they include AC charger as well because the initial charge of more than 3 hours is recommended. In Singapore, a drive from the east to the west does not take more than 2 hours. I am tempted to use my USB Port AC Charger to charge it initially but as usual the manual said that if you use other means of charging not stated in the manual, and if anything happens the warranty will void.

Once there is an initial charge in the device, I think we will not be needing the car charger anymore unless you are a heavy user who talks more than 4 hours in the car every day. A 2 hour solar charged will give you 1 hour of talk time. And in sunny Singapore it is not difficult to get 2 hours of sunlight if you park outdoors.

Paired With iPhone

I paired it with my iPhone and got it working within 5 minutes, it really helps when you read the manual. The speaker in the device is pretty loud when I on it to the maximum and in fact it is louder than my radio! There is a 16-bit digital signal processor (DSP) in it that filters the surrounding noise and reduces the echo of your own voice. This works pretty well, I tested it with my radio both on and off and when I on my radio, the radio in the background becomes very mild. Of course when the radio is off, there is no background noise because the noise when driving on the road is filtered off.

I got have two weird issues when using it with my iPhone, I can’t press the Multi Function Button (MFB) on the device to answer the car, I have to press the answer button on my iPhone. The voice dialing works but somehow it doesn’t work correctly, always giving me the wrong names. When I tested it without the device and speak straight into the iPhone, it works well.

In The Car

I recommend it placing right at the top of the driver’s windscreen to prevent it from distracting the driver’s view when driving.

I highly recommend this because most of the time you only need to use handsfree when driving. It is much better than having a ear piece because it is uncomfortable wearing the ear piece all the time and it will make you look dumb.

You can get the DriveMultiSolar Bluetooth Car Kit for £24.95 (including taxes but excluding shipping).

I was invited to a blogger event by HP at Gallery Hotel’s Bar 84. The special guest appearance is industrial designer Tord Boontje whom HP collaborated with for the limited edition version of the HP Mini entitled, HP Mini By Studio Tord Boontje.

Li Xiang is more familiar when it comes to designers, so I will just quote what she say:

This is his first time in Singapore, specially for HP Mini launch. His works are mainly nature inspired and highly stylised partly because his mum teaches art and textiles. He also bring this continuous theme into the netbook design. The white HP Mini is covered with white flora and fauna prints design by Tord. Embedded within the intertwining prints are more than 30 endangered animals. Tord also realises that HP has been greatly involved in environmental programs, therefore he suggests an added message, an awareness to be more environmentally responsible for these endangered species.

This year Singapore Christmas light-up is themed “A Christmas All Decked Out”. Three Christmas icons namely Santa, reindeers and snowmen are given designers makeovers and all decked out in haute couture. The first Christmas light-up started in 1984 (the year I was born). So this is the 26th year running.

The decoration in Orchard road is divided into three zones, the blue zone covering from Tanglin Mall all the way to Shaw Center, the orange zone covers from Ion Orchard all the way to Heeren and lastly the red zone covers from Orchard Building till the end of Orchard Road.

Blue Zone

Orange Zone

Red Zone

Some trivia, the Christmas light-up launch mechanism was constructed from recycled wood panels with crystal ornaments from previous years Christmas decorations.

Personally I think the this year decoration is better than last year, my personally favorite is the “snowing effect” simulating by white LED lights.

Visit Singapore

I received my Cool Bananas Netbook Organiser Bag from Gear Zap 2 days ago. It is brown in color and made of durable Nylon and Faux leather. The dimensions are 24cm x 30cm x 7cm.

The bag is compatible with most netbook of screen sizes from 8.9″ to 12″. Here are some netbook models that are compatible.

MSI Wind U100

Asus Eee PC 900 901 4G

Asus Eee PC 1000HE

Asus Eee PC S101

Acer Aspire One A150X 8,9″

Acer Aspire One D150

Medion AKOYA Mini E1210

Samsung NC10

Dell Inspiron Mini 10

Lenovo IdeaPad S10e

Toshiba NB100

Packaging View

The bag contains four compartments, there is one in the front and at the back. The back compartment is using magnetic button instead of zip.

Front View

Back View

The two compartments are so called the main ones. One of them allows you to put up to four cards and there are two velcro pouch holders in it allow you to put your USB drive, broadband mobile modem and maybe a Swiss army knife if you carry it along.

You can fit in an A4 size paper inside the bag if you do not mind not zipping the top portion.

You can consider putting your netbook charger in this compartment.

Main Compartment

The other compartment holds your netbook of size 8.9″ to 12″. The velcro flap is elastic and hence it is flexible. There are cushion in it but it is very mild but it should be able to withstand the shock if you drop it. Also because the cushion is mild, the bag does not feel bulky like my Crumpler messenger bag. There are additional 2 pouches which allows you to put in your mouse and 2.5″ portable HDD.

Netbook Compartment

Netbook Compartment With Netbook In It

The build quality of the zip and strap hook is pretty good but of course this being a netbook bag, try not to put in too heavy items.

Zip

Strap Hook

Bag With Strap

The Cool Bananas Netbook Organiser Bag is meant to be a casual bag. Netbook is pretty small because it is meant to be portable. But if we need to bundle accessories along with it like a charger, mouse, portable harddisk drive or broadband mobile modem. This bag makes the perfect fit to carry your netbook as well as those accessories.

You can get the Cool Bananas Netbook Organiser Bag from Gear Zap for £28.95 (including taxes but excluding shipping).

I am not a guru when it comes to SEO, what I know about SEO is from what I heard from my friends and forums. I also do not believe in paying thousand over dollars just to get a good SEO because most of the tools are free!

Just would like to share the stuff I did on this website to improve it’s SEO:

Age of domain does matter, I bought lesterchan.net way back in 24th January 2004 which makes this domain close to 6 years old.

I am using Google XML Sitemaps to send sitemaps to various search engine.

Post title always appear first in the browser title bar before the domain name or website name, eg “Site Traffic October 2009 « Blog | lesterchan.net”.

I allow bots to crawl my whole website using <meta name=”robots” content=”all” />

From a user perspective, I always think what search term might the user Google for and I use that as the post title. eg “Windows 7 Pricing in Singapore” or “SingTel iPhone 3GS Price Plans”. All these post has become my most viewed posts.

Produce content that users really want in order to get them to link back to you. Example, my highest viewed page is my WordPress Plugins Page.

Register your website with Google Webmasters Tools.

Tools used to track my website:

Webalizer

Google Analytics

WordPress.com Stats

Extreme Tracking (Depreciated)

Feel free to add in more SEO tips in the comments.

Today marks our 5th anniversary. This year is a little unique. We did not buy each other gifts nor write each other a card. Instead we bought a card together and both of us will write in the same card.

We had a buffet lunch at Carosel at Royal Plaza. It is SGD$45 per pax during a weekend lunch and we get to redeem SGD$10 worth of carpark fees which is equivalent to about 3 hours of parking at Royal Plaza.

The reason we chose Carousel is because Li Xiang and I saw all the nicely displayed Macrons when we walked past Carousel quite sometime back. Another reason is because I was reading a review on it at HungryGoWhere and there are plenty of reviews on it (I sorted by number of reviews). But after trying it out, it is pretty average. The food and dessert variety is alright but the taste is not there. I kinda like the coffee there though. The thing I hate the most is the ice cream, I can tell that they are using some cheap ice cream like Walls because I am very sensitive to ice cream taste. I expect better quality ice cream like Mövenpick at least. Nevertheless the service was pretty good, my iced water was topped up almost instantly once it is goes below half.

I think Straits Kitchen at Hyatt will be better choice if you ask me.

After lunch, we went to Singapore Flyer. It is our first time there after so much procrastination from Li Xiang. We wanted to use the 15% voucher because it was sent to Li Xiang because of her upcoming birthday but didn’t know if you use OCBC or DBS credit card you are entitled to 20% discount. The usual adult price ticket is SGD$29.50 and after the discount, we paid SGD$23.60 for each ticket.

The experience we have on board the Singapore Flyer is pretty good. The service staff are all well mannered and friendly. The Singapore Flyer really gives you a 350° view of the landscape of Marina area and I didn’t know the Marina Bay Sands IR is so big till I am on board the Flyer. The ride lasted exactly 30 minutes because I was subtracting the time I took from the last photo with the first photo.

We bought the sovereign photo at SGD$18 because I don’t think we will be sitting the Singapore Flyer anytime soon and even we did, we will not be buying the photograph again. Most importantly the photography have a date stamp on it which marks today’s date. Li Xiang said the typography of the date could be smaller.

Came back home about 4pm and we played Wii Sports Resort!

Mission has been posted on the Are You Being Served? website, check out Lester & Li Xiang: Sound service!

Here is a snippet of the post:

We approached one of the staff, nearer to us, and ask him to take the product down for us. He is wearing an orange color t-shirt which is significantly different from the rest of the staff there (they wore black) and he do not bear a name tag but just the word “Promoter” so we assumed he might be a part time staff working on the weekends.

Judging from his reply stated on top, he is not very sure of the product himself either. To make matter worst, he has problem communicating with us. He seems to have problem understanding our English and his replies in English to us are often very short.

The launch was collaborated between Microsoft Singapore and Challenger Funan. The first person in the queue started queuing at 3.30pm and only at 7pm they started giving out the queue number. At about 10.30pm, there was about 140+ people in the queue, but I think it eventually went up to 200 before midnight.

The first 177 customers gets to buy Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Edition at SGD$77 (RRP: SGD$219). After that, a limited number of customers can purchase it at SGD$147 during the launch event.

I have been using Windows 7 for quite sometime since it was available in my school’s MSDN AA on 14th August 2009. I am very satisfied with it, definitely an improvement over the failed Windows Vista or the long running Windows XP.

However, do not rush to buy it. Wait and see how much will the OEM version cost at Sim Lim Square first.
