Yes, another LG phone we’re testing at the moment! While we are in the middle of reviewing the LG GW520, we’ve also been kindly sent the new LG Chocolate BL40. We’ve talked about the BL40 quite abit in the past and it has been mentioned by a number of tech blogs due to the radical changes it has had compared to its predecessor.

We expect to have a review of the new Chocolate completed sometime next week. McLaren F1 designer unveils an awful looking electric car

An electric car known as the T.27 created by the McLaren F1 supercar road car designer Gordon Murray has been unveiled. Three prototypes of the T.27 model will be developed over the next 16 months.

The manufacturing process as well as the performance of the car will be aimed at being environment friendly. Called iStream (don’t know why everyone likes to put an i in front of everything these days!), its manufacturing process has received £9m of investment, half of which came from the government’s Technology Strategy Board.

iStream plants can be just one fifth of the size of a conventional car factory, as the cars are not made from stamped steel. All the parts are designed by computer and welded together rather than being stamped out of metal sheets.

The T.27 car is designed for city or town use. Its predecessor, the T.25, weighs 600kg – half the weight of an average small family car. Gordon Murray believes the key to efficient performance is to be lightweight. Although this awful looking car may not look like it, the frame of the T.27 has been designed to absorb energy! The T.27 can reach 60 miles per hour and is designed to travel up to 100 miles in between recharges.

Spring Design dual-display Android ebook reader: Alex

Earlier last month Spring Design launched a cool new ebook reader gadget known as Alex. What’s special about this latest ebook reader is that it runs Google’s Android and has two displays. The top one as you can see is a conventional monochromic electronic paper display that’s six-inch in size while the bottom one is a colour touchscreen which allows you to use Android to browse the internet and blogs.

What’s unique about having dual display, is when you’re browsing the internet either via its built-in 3G modem or Wi-Fi, the Alex will let you visit a web site, select a story, and the device will reflow it to the EPD screen. This makes it feel like whatever it is you’re reading has been published as a newspaper article. Though one issue I think I would have with it is that it appears to be a very long device, this may make it less portable.

The colour screen can be switched off to save power. This makes browsing blogs and news sites much more feasible, since you don’t have to wait for the ebook to render individual pages before you get to your target content.

The capacitive LCD touchscreen running Android also supports UI customization, photo galleries, and full-color video playback. When you read an ebook, the interface lets you quickly skip around to any page, using an on-screen slide bar. An on-screen keyboard also makes text entry practical. With so many multimedia features, I would say the Alex is probably one of the best boredom fight gadgets to be launched in recent months

Review: Sony ICF-C8WM clock radio with Walkman phone dock

For those who have been reading our gadget reviews for sometime, you will know that we’ve reviewed similar products to the Sony ICF-C8WM clock radio before, most notable is the Philips Wake-up Light. However the ICF-C8WM clock radio is quite different in terms of function and purpose. Its not a wake-up lamp as such but should be considered as more of a radio clock with additional bonus features such as support for your portable music players and Sony Ericsson Walkman phones.

We have had a quick look at it and some of its major features while it was here briefly and here’s what we thought of it…

Design

Our first impressions of the Sony ICF-C8WM was that it had alot of buttons, on the front, the top, the side and more on the back! It was however much more lighter in weight and much less bulkier than it actually looks. The quality of material used was satisfactory though we’re sure Sony could have done much better to make it less plasticky, but we’re not complaining too much.

We liked the way the speakers were laid out from the top, extending towards the sides. The speaker of course as you’ll be aware plays the radio but also the music from a connected Walkman phone or a portable music player which you can connect via the AUX-in at the back.

Here are the series of buttons you would find when you have a look at the back. While some we could accept being placed at the back, out of all the buttons, it was most annoying to have to reach to the back in order to tune the radio stations you want. On a more positive note though, you would find yourself using the IR remote control most of the time as its not difficult to use and easy to get used to. Disappointingly, you do need to hold the remote straight at the radio clock’s sensor in order to get the response you want, and when you are in front of it, you can stand as far back as seven to eight meters.

Features

Setting up the Sony ICF-C8WM was really simple, you only needed to plug in its power supply and all the time and date settings would automatically configure itself for you in seconds. Setting up the alarm was also very simple, you could set alarms for a particular day of the week, there are two alarm slots available just in case you needed an extra alarm for other purposes.

Sony uses the punch line “wake up your way” for the ICF-C8WM and thats because its possible to configure the alarm so that you hear your favourite tune from your Walkman music phone or the radio when it sounds. With the AM / FM radio function, you get a go and swift frequency scanner and up to 20 memory slots for storing your favourite stations. This should be more than enough for most people.

This also brings on the advantage of using the ICF-C8WM as your Sony Ericsson Walkman phone’s charger, as you play your music from your phone, it also gets charged up by the clock radio. Unfortunately, this is only designed for Sony Ericsson phones. Though you will be able to play music from your iPod using the AUX-in socket provided, there are no USB ports on the ICF-C8WM for charging it.

Speaking of the Walkman function, it was rather strange for us to find that there wasn’t a Walkman music mode button on the remote control itself, there was only one, and its on the machine itself. The Sony designers were probably assuming that users would always be next to the clock radio if they wanted to start playing a song from the phone. Once you do start the Walkman mode by directly pressing onto the button in front, you can control songs and volume, etc, from the remote. That was probably the only feature which we found slight odd to use.

Lastly, one of the final points to know about the Sony ICF-C8WM is that it features an internal backup battery, Sony calls this function “No Power, No Problem”. This is not to say that if you unplug its mains power that it will keep going. It simply means if by any chance you experience power cut before your alarm then its backup battery will kick in to make sure your scheduled alarm will wake you up as planned.

Practicality

For £69.99 the Sony ICF-C8WM is to be frank on the high end budget of clock radios. We’re certain many will be able to find alarm clocks with similar function at a lower budget. However Sony has added in tiny extra functions such as backup battery and AUX jack which does make the ICF-C8WM stand out. Its design isn’t bad, and we wouldn’t say it was bad looking at all. It is practical for its designed purpose although there are areas for improvement as highlighted in our review. If you move around alot though, the ICF-C8WM does help in that you won’t need to bring your Sony Ericsson phone chargers along with you. If you’re not a Sony Ericsson phone user but you want to have a clock radio just like this one for your iPod Touch or iPhone, we recommend you check out the equivalent model known as the Sony ICF-C7iP, which is on sale at the same price.

Pros:

• Good design overall, lighter than it looks
• Good range of practical functions comparing to similar clock radios by other brands
• Above average sound quality for a clock radio
• Plays music from other devices using AUX jack at the back
• You can relax and trust that it will always wake you up on time even if there’s a power cut!

Cons:

• Its buttons are the only problem with its design, there are too many
• Does not provide ports for charging other gadgets, therefore will only charge your Sony Ericsson phone

Sony Ericsson announces XPERIA X10 Android phone

Sony Ericsson is the latest phonemaker to officially enter the Android arena. The manufacturer has unveiled the XPERIA X10 Android smartphone. Though it won’t come with Android 2.0, and just the version 1.6 Donut. It is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the X10 boasts a 4″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS with GSM/GPRS/EDGE in addition to either UMTS/HSPA. This will be dependent on where in the world you are and what networks will be releasing it.

The X10 will boast 1GB of onboard memory and Sony Ericsson will be kindly throwing in a 8GB microSD. Like the Motorola Cliq (or Dext) which launched with its own bit of customised Android facelift known as the MOTOBLUR, the X10 too has its own overlaying customised UI known as the Rachel. The Rachel UI will boast two Sony Ericsson apps known as Timescape and Mediascape, more info in the press release below and as you will have imagined, alot of Google pre-loaded apps. The XPERIA X10 will be available from Q1 2010 in Sensuous Black and Lustre White.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – the world’s first Ferrari theme park

Get ready Ferrari fans. Known as the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and expected to arrive next year is the world’s first Ferrari theme park. It will feature an iconic sleek red roof that’s said to be directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body, spanning 2,152,782 square feet and carrying the largest Ferrari logo ever created.

There will be a number of attractions, including rides for children of all ages and the world’s fastest rollercoaster, travelling at speeds exceeding 124 mph. Another ride will rocket passengers through the roof and to a height of 203 feet to simulate the G-forces experienced by a drivers in an F1 car.

For those who want to punch this into your sat-navs right away, the Ferrari World will be on Yas Island on the North East side of Abu Dhabi’s mainland, which is a convenient 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport and 50 minutes from Yas Marina Circuit, which will host the inaugural Abu Dhabi GP later this year.

New iPhone OS 3.1.2 unlock tool Blacksn0w to be released on Nov 4th

iPhone hacker / jailbreaker and now unlocker Geohot has posted on his blog that he has come up with a new tool that will unlock iPhone OS 3.1.2. Though limited info is available at this time, the tool will be called Blacksn0w and will unlock iPhones running OS version 3.1.2 on baseband 05.11.07. Blacksn0w will be out this Wednesday, November 4. If you use Blackra1n for jailbreaking the iPhone then you’ll be able to download the Blacksn0w unlock solution straight from it. Its not certain at this point how Blacksn0w will work and which OS it will support, but one thing is definitely, it will be free! We’ll post further updates as soon as it gets released.

Videos: Google Maps turn by turn navigation for Android

You guys will probably have heard by now that Google Maps has started moving into the territory of turn by turn navigation. Though its only just in beta, it will be free! A huge setback for sat nav apps in terms of business and popularity. Two problems though, thus far, you can only use it in the US and it is currently only available on Android, but Google has said that it will be developing support for other mobile platforms in the near future.

With Google Maps Navigation, you can search by voice. Speak your destination instead of typing (English only): “Navigate to the de Young Museum in San Francisco”.

On the Google Maps Navigation app, you can just say where you want to go, here’s a demo…

Of course, when you’re in the car, you don’t want to be holding in with hands, so here’s the app’s car docking mode in action, again demonstrated by that iPhone killer Motorola Droid Android phone…

iPhone 3.1.2 jailbreak: New Blackra1n RC2 provides many fixes

A few weeks ago GeoHot released Blackra1n to jailbreak any iPhone and iPod Touch running the new firmware OS version 3.1.2. However, many users after downloading the tool had trouble running the tool and some actually didn’t manage to achieve a jailbreak.

GeoHot has now released RC2 of his Blackra1n tool which addresses the following…

• Fixed 3G issues
• Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB ipt 8GB and new 3GSes
• Fixed Icy issues
• Both Windows and Mac

It must be stressed once again, that for iPhone 3G and 3GS users who want to unlock their iPhones using ultrasn0w, you must not update to 3.1.2 via iTunes directly as your baseband would be updated automatically. You would be better off using the iPhone Dev Team’s tools as it would help you bypass any baseband update. UK: Sky Player for Xbox 360 has arrived

Great news, the long awaited for on-demand streaming of Sky channels/content for Xbox 360 has arrived. Effective from today, Sky Player for Xbox 360 will allow subscribed users to access on-demand streams of Sky content and live broadcasting through their console. The exact same channels will be available to you that are available on your existing Sky subscription.

If you’re not subscribed just yet, there are two possible ways to pay for your subscription. Either way, you will find yourself having to pay for Sky subscription and Xbox Live Gold subscription:

1. The first method is if you’re not too sure and just want to try it out, you can opt for a bundle pack. Sky will be selling a bundle pack of a month of Sky Player subscription (with the Sky Sports pack), a media remote, and 3 months of Xbox Live Gold subscription for £30. This means users will be able to try it out without commiting yourself to any long term contract.
2. The second is more suitable if you are sure that you like to have this service. Sign up for Sky subscription which costs £15 per month, and then go for Xbox Live Gold subscription which is £40 per year. This adds up to £220 per year or just over £18 per month, considerably cheaper than the above method if you’re certain you want this over long-term.

Official: Palm Pixi coming exclusively to Sprint on Nov 15

Its official, Palm’s second WebOS smartphone the Pixi will be arriving exclusively to Sprint on November the 15th. The new Pixi is slated to hit Sprint stores, Best Buy, RadioShack and selected Walmart locations next month for $99.99. However, its not that simple, $99.99 is after a $50 instant rebate and a $100 “mail-in rebate” that you’ll probably need to wait abit for. For those in the UK, the Pixi’s arrival date is still yet to be confirmed, considering the Pre has just arrived us not long, it may be awhile!

To recap, the Palm Pixi is a non-slider 3G handset, with a 2.63-inch, 320×400 resolution touchscreen, Qualcomm’s MSM7627 chipset, Microsoft Exchange push email, built-in GPS, a 2-megapixel camera with flash, accelerometer, media player, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 8GB memory, microUSB connector and a 3.5mm stereo jack.

Top 10 most common TV technology myths

Getting a new TV soon? We’ve featured quite abit regarding the new generation of LED TVs in recent months, for example what the differences are between LED and LCD TVs, what we’ve got here today are the top ten most common misconceptions on TV technology. Got further questions? We’d be happy to try and answer.

TVs with 1080i produce the same quality picture as those with 1080p

Not true: only 1080p (‘p’ stands for progressive) produces a true Full HD experience, 1080i (‘i’ stands for interlaced) only produces half the picture at any one time

OLED TVs are the next generation of ‘LED TVs’

Not true: OLED TVs use a completely different panel; so-called ‘LED TVs’ are varieties of LCD

LCD TVs are no good for watching sports and action movies

Not true: better quality LCD TVs have much improved refresh rates, and most manufacturers have their own motion processing technology (e.g. Motionflow). Watching movies in cinema mode gives a darker, warmer picture alongside 24p native content

LCD TVs produce inferior pictures to CRT and Plasma

Not true: LCD TVs (especially the latest and most developed models) now have a number of different technologies to produce high quality images. An LCD panel is just one small part of an LCD TV

LCD screens are made with liquid crystals

Not true: there is no actual liquid in a liquid crystal. The term refers to a peculiar quality of a certain type of crystal, not its physical appearance

You have to directly face an LCD to watch it properly

Not true: on good quality LCD TVs you should be able to sit about 70° off axis and still see a perfectly displayed image (you can go as far as 89° and still see a good picture)

LCDs suffer from inadequate black levels

Not true: most better quality LCD TVs have much improved contrast ratios to produce high quality colours, with some having a contrast ratio of 1m:1. Some LCD TVs also have Dynamic Contrast for extra detail and depth

Screen burn is a problem for all types of TVs

Not true: whilst screen burn CAN affect all types of TVs, it is often confused with transient image persistence on LCD and Plasma TVs (it’s most common in Plasma models). Screen burn is more prevalent on monochromatic CRT screens

Plasma TVs have been banned under new EU regulations

Not true: new EU legislation will bring in minimum energy performance standards for TVs; Plasma TVs will simply need to be more energy efficient to conform. Some LCD TVs already offer massive energy savings: the BRAVIA WE5 uses the newest commercially available LCD backlight technology, HCFL (Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp), which provides the quality of a CCFL backlight but uses significantly less electricity

Bigger is always better when you’re choosing a new TV

Not true: consumers should always choose a TV that is the right size for the room it will be used in, otherwise some viewing benefits can be lost. However the realistic quality of BRAVIA Full HD allows you to sit closer to the television. That means it’s possible to size up to a larger screen for a more immersive HD viewing experience.

Berlin Racing Team video: iPhone remote controlled car project

Here’s a nice video of a car (minivan) recently developed to be completely autonomous, only to be controlled by the iPhone iDriver app it is connected to. The Spirit of Berlin team (Berlin Racing Team) developed the iPhone app and used the platform which was developed for the 2007 Darpa Urban Challenge.

How does it work? The iPhone connects with the driving circuitry via WiFi and as you will see in the video this offers a gas button, a brake button, and a steering button to enable the accelerometer for turning.

These all correspond to moving robotic bits and bobs underneath the driver’s seat which are too technical for us! The front camera video below is transmitted to the iPhone in real-time to make sure the driver doesn’t run over himself!
