5 Electronic Board Games For Family Fun Night

I have personally always enjoyed a good game night with friends and family. Whether the board games are new or old, I think there’s always something that everyone can agree on to play, depending on how competitive your family/friends happen to be. The latest iteration of games, however, have made the transition from board to electronic, and in many places the style and gameplay is completely streamlined. This helps to cut down on setup time and break down time, and also lessens the chance that you’ll be trying to play a game with a number of vital missing pieces. Here are some of our personal favorites.

The Virtual Assist Dartboard

I have always enjoyed a good game of darts while out at the bar, but keeping track of the scoring system can be a bit of a pain. This is even more true after you have consumed a couple of cold ones, but thankfully the virtual assist dartboard is here to save the day. The assist comes in whenever you toss a dart and hit a particular section, which will immediately illuminate. The electronic board also uses LED lights to help you calculate the score quickly and easily. If regular darts aren’t enough for you, the board comes with a variety of game modes including Count Up, Blackjack, and Treasure Hunt. The latter seems to be the most intriguing, with players battling it out to find secret treasures hidden on the board somewhere.

I always thought Scrabble was a great game right up until you go against someone who was an English major that pops out words you would have never even dreamed of. Setup can also be a bit of a pain with getting all of the letters organized and ready to go. Die hard Monopoly fans may be a bit intimidated by the introduction of the electronic equipment, but once you get the hang of it I guarantee you will never go back. Seriously, it is just that much of an improvement over the original game there isn’t much reason to.

Boggle Flash: Wordsmith

Boggle has been a popular game amongst both kids and adults for a pretty long time now, and it is easy to see why. The game play is simply yet deceivingly interesting. While the original Boggle wasn’t that complicated to begin with, Boggle Flash: Wordsmith does help streamline the game even further. You will immediately notice the similarities here between this and Electronic Scrabble, and for good reason. Boggle’s noticeable difference, however, is in the introduction of a time limit, and the flash version can be played anytime, anywhere in short order. I’m not sure this replaces the original game, per se, but it would be great fun for trips.

For many, the ring serves as an imortant repetroire of their wardrobe. Reaching far beyond the more traditional roles we think that rings take on, such as weddings, they have also grown into an expression of who we are. If, like me, you happen to be a geek, then there are a variety of designs out there that should perk your interest. I have put together a short list of my favorites, although it should hardly be considered exhaustive.

The Heart Rate Ring

While it is true that, in general, the culture of geeks isn’t known for an emphasis on physical fitness, many of us in the community know better. Gaming may, according to a variety of studies, sharpen the mind, but keeping your body in top condition should be considered equally as important. For that, we have a handy little gadget that fits on your finger, the Heart Rate Ring.The designers intelligently kept flashiness to a minimum, as the primary function of the ring is to keep your hear rate monitored, but it does a whole lot more. It can also calculate distance traveled, the amount of calories you have burned, and whether your heart rate is staying within the recommended level of fitness.

Ring Mouse

It’s a computer mouse! No, it’s a ring! Actually, they are now one in the same with this ring mouse. I have to admit that the device idea is rather clever, as it is a mouse that attaches to your ring finger and moves around your computer screen via finger movement. It might look a little unwieldy, but I can imagine a number of scenarios where this would be quite useful. If you are in tight quarters, for example, like on a train, bus, or plane, you can navigate around your operating system much more easily than you would with a standard pad.

While not a ring on the most literal sense, I found it hard not to include this in the list. I have to admit when I first saw this crystal ring I thought it looked something taken directly from a James Bond movie. Oh legos, is there a facet of our lives that your simple intuition can not work its way into? I would argue no, as the elegant simplicity of these Lego Radar Rings go a long way in proving that. The pieces look like they were salvaged from one of the older, more classic Lego sets. Rather than loading up the proepr piece on your ship, however, now you can express your love for all things Lego on whatever finger you like. I am sure there are plenty of other Lego pieces out there that could be converted into a ring of this kind, so bust open your favorite lego set and get to converting! Personally, I’d like to mount one of the pet parrots or monkeys from the pirate set. Alternatively, I could also go for something from the dark ages, perhaps an emblem or crest neatly mounted on a ring would also look equally cool. Whether you are a Sci-fi fan or just want some geeky fun to wear around, chances are there is a Lego set out there to accomodate your tastes.

I have always thought of cookie dough as a type of edible clay. The fact that it starts off so squishy makes it ncie and moldable, allowing you to make your cookies into a variety of shapes and sizes. Luckily for us geeks, that means that we can make a great number of nerdy expressions as well, from ninjas to our very own “Homemade” stamp of approval. I put together a short list of my personal favorites, but your mileage may vary depending on your preference and genre of choice.

Homemade Cookie Stamper

If you don’t cook very often, like myself, then chances are you might need to persuade your friends and family that yes, you did in fact make these yourself. Thankfully, these homemade cookie stampers are happy to come to your rescue! It also adds a little more to the “comfort” in comfort food, knowing that the delicious treat you’re about to consume was made by you from scratch. If you want to get creative, I’m sure these could be easily used for other fluffy creations like pancakes or maybe to put your stamp of homemade approval on waffles.

Ninja Bread Man Cookie Cutters

As we all know, ninjas are deadly and silent, and they’re also incredibly violent. While the Bandai Cook Joy Pack may be designed for sandwiches, they could very easily be conscripted into use for cookies as well! The pack comes with a wide array of delicious choices for your culinary creations, including a cute little piggy, an apple, a bear face, or a smiling face to brighten your day. Each has it’s own distinct charm, but I think the smiling face would be my personal favorite. The variety of cutters means that you could easily fit the molds into a number of themes as well, from Spring time to the holiday season. The little pig mold would be a great addition to a Fourth of July Barbeque. The smiling face mold would be perfect for a happy occasion lke a wedding or birthday party. The Apple would be a welcome hop-along to an afternoon picnic at the park. You can tailor each mold to whatever occasion you see fit, which gives you a lot more flexibility the next time you are preparing to cook for an event.

5 Unusual Chair Designs

The fun thing about decorating your own home is that you really have free reign in terms of the style you want to portray. If you happen to be an ubergeek like myself, gaming chairs tend to be a lot of fun, but there are an innumerable number of other themes you can opt for as well. From chairs that are flashy to those that aim for subtle simplicity, we have featured a number of odd, quirky designs that any chair enthusiast can get behind.

Innovative Coffee Bench

Ok, so, technically, this isn’t a chair in and of itself, but as you can see from the design, this innovative coffee bench has the ability to be a chair or a bench depending on your preference and the number of guests you have to sit on it. The coffee bench is a collaboration between product designer Karolina Tylka and an interior architect, Szymon Nawoj, to create an unpretentious, brilliantly functional bench that could easily convert to a pair of chairs, side tables, or anything the consumer can come up with. The final product is rather impressive, if quite odd looking. I wonder how well the pieces stay in place when you sit on them.

Disco Chair

In a completely different vein than what we saw with the coffee bench, this disco chair is innovative in a flashy, retro kind of way. If you have always thought of yourself as a bit edgy and you’re willing to put up with a few guests who claim to be blinded by the color, this chair is for you. The chair was designed by London-based firm Kiwi & Pom. It is constructed from 200 meters of electroluminescent wire. The end result is a chair that looks like a disco ball rainbow, although I am not sure what the weight capacity is for someone who would like to sit on it.

Puppo Chair

Any fan of the Transformers series should be able to appreciate a chair that can convert from an ordinary chair into a table, a footrest, or even a place for storage. If you like your gadgetry to be able to serve as many functions as possible, then this Puppo chair is definitely for you. It would also be a nice segway into the downsizing movement, as the chair would be well suited to spaces where you don’t have a lot of square footage to work with such as a dorm or Tumbleweed house. Puppo sounds an awful lot like a young dog who is also a super hero or something, though, rather than a chair.

Paper Darwin Chair

A chair constructed from paper that can be torn away to reveal a completely different design may sound environmentally callous at first, but hear me out. This Darwin chair is made with a swinging structure and 200 printed sheets of Tyvek, each with its own unique design printed on it. Tyvek is actually a light weight recyclable paper product originally created by Dupont, so you don’t have to worry as much about damaging mother nature. Best of all, you can change the entire look of the chair simply by tearing off a layer and opting for a new one. Just make sure that you like at least half of the designs in the chair, lest you be tearing away all of your hard earned money 10 sheets at a time trying to find a pattern that fits with the rest of your decor.

Wood Stump Furniture

When you think about it, a piece of furniture designed to look exactly like a tree stump doesn’t really sound all that appealing. I mean, most tree stumps are usually in some sort of state of decay, with a variety of bug life inside them. Still, if you own an old cabin in the mountains, then this wood stump furniture could very easily find a home there. The furniture is constructed from wood, urethrane casters and stainless steel, so I would imagine the point about the bugs is moot here. A brave soul could also place this in their apartment or regular house to give it a more natural look, I suppose, but I admit it wouldn’t be my first choice if I decided to do some redecorating.

Finding Nemo: Fun Fish Tank Mods

Since buying my first house, I had to sadly accept the fact that my aquarium would need to be put on hold until such a time that I found a spot for it at the new place. Now that my fishies have been given away, I find myself pining for an aquarium once again, and I am already planning to setup a new fish residence at some point in the future. That got me to thinking that not just any aquarium will do, it will have to be something truly unique and unusual. I would like it to be something particularly geeky in terms of theme, but there are tons of fishtank mods out there that are bright, colorful, and downright awesome. Here are a few that caught my eye.

USB Aquarium

If you are looking to setup your own fishtank and space available i running out, consider this USB aquarium. Rather than need to setup a filter, light, plugs, and so on, you can just plug the USB cord into your PC and you are good to go. It would be a great way to decorate your office or even your desk at work if they’ll allow it. You may want to to turn the nature sounds off for a workplace environ, however. The overhead light is adjustable, and filtration is provided via an under-gravel filtration system and low voltage pump. If that functionality isn’t enough for you, then you are also equipped with a clock, LCD calendar, and the date. All in a day’s work for your friendly desktop aquarium.

Nike Air Abuku Fishtank Shoe

I would imagine you wouldn’t be doing much sprinting in this Nike Air Abuku shoe, which as you can see is a lot more than meets the eye. Part of the NIKE78 project, which challenges designers to redefine what Nike shoes are capable of, I have to admit having a shoe shaped aquarium would be the perfect gift for an avid runner.

Fish Tank Toilet

At first glance, you might think that this toilet makes for a great unusual place of residence for your fish, but it probably isn’t functional. In actuality, the clever designer behind this mod has the aquarium built around the perimeter of the toilet, and the flush tank is integrated behind it. I think it might be a little uncomfortable to have a school of fish hanging out, watching you do your business, but I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who would not be bothered by it.

Hanging Aquarium

When you think of the average aquarium, a lot of words like unwieldy and wide probably spring to mind. A clever designer took these usually accurate words for a fish tank and turned them upside down with this hanging aquarium mod. The aquariums, as you might expect, do run on the high end of fish tank prices, but that’s what you’ll pay for a luxurious look and the ability to have your fish hang out anywhere. In your kitchen, in your family room, or even above your computer. These unique aquariums have the ability to go wherever you do, and the filtration system fits neatly into stainless steel tubes. Just make sure that it is properly installed, because a couple hundred pounds of fish-filled water and debris would probably make a mess of any room.

Mac G4 Cube Fish Tank Mod

In all my years in dealing with technology, I learned quickly that Apple/Mac fans are rabid in their fanaticism and questioning any aspect of that is a complete waste of time. You might as well roll with it, and get them a fish tank that a true Mac fan can enjoy. This Mac G4 Cube fish tank shows us that the inside of a computer case also has the ability to sustain life under the right circumstances. Now all they need is to take it one step further and have the computer built into the center of the tank. Such coolness would be beyond my capability, but hey if they can build a fishtank into a functional toilet than building a fishtank around a computer simply can’t be that much more difficult.

Geeky Bead Creations

I am not entirely sure why,but I have been a big fan of fused bead art since I was a kid. This could be because I feel like the process is simple enough to pick up for kids, while adults can have fun creating more elaborate designs as well. If you are curious as to the potential of Perler beads, you have come to the right place, as these geeky bead creations display some of the best designs I have come across.

Gameboy Sprite Set

I have many fond memories of my original Gameboy, even as I still have nightmares about trying to adjust the light in darker conditions so I could see what the hell is going on in the screen. Still, this Gameboy Perler Bead Sprite Set does a great job of re-creating the Gameboy magic. The beads are arranged in a grid to form an image similar to the original sprite, which are then fused together by heating. The end, result, as you can see, is a 3 dimensional image of the classic handheld console. Now if I could only figure out how to insert cartridges into it.

Perler Bead Mosaic Paintings

Generally when you think mosaic, you have images of sand, stone, and/or tile, but these Perler Bead Mosaic Paintings have a flavor all their own. I don’t want to think about how many beads it took to put these incredibly detailed pieces together, but they look fantastic. The original creator works as a full time sign maker, and you can tell by the quality of the craftsmanship. I haven’t gotten beyond making 8 bit Nintendo sprites myself, but this guy is in a league of his own.

Perler Bead Video Game Consoles

If the Gameboy wasn’t enough to satiate your appetite for awesome looking bead creations, then look no further than these Perler Bead Video Game Consoles. All of your favorite console creations are included, and no one is safe. Even some of the more obscure consoles such as the Sega Dreamcast are shown, and it would be fun to put together a set of these for your local office cubicle. My personal favorite is the Coleco Vision 3D console. Seriously, who even remembers what that was or what it did anymore? It was obscure at the time it came out, but not it is relegated to being a relic. The design seems to lend itself well to a bead format, though.

Pac-Man Wood Notebook

While technically not a pure bead creation, the beads are still an integral part of this Pac-man notebook design. I mean what is Pac-man going to eat if he doesn’t have beads on there? Nothing, that’s what! This is an incredibly unique way to show off your Pac-Man spirit. I am sure you have come across Pac-man notebooks before, but probably nothing as interactive looking as this one. If geek is in fact chic, then this notebook is the way to go.

NES Mike Tyson’s Punchout Characters

8-bit games from the original NES console lend themselves well to the Perler bead format, but there are few games that would do so as well as the original Mike Tyson’s Punchout. These Perler bead sprites from Punchout are a testament to a bygone era. Everyone loved the hilariously scaled difficulty of the game, and working your way up to Mike Tyson was no easy to task. For a moment, you almost believe that a no-name Little Mac, despite his small stature, could stand up to the legendary Mike Tyson and win. Sure, we know that isn’t very realistic, but the game was fantastic, and there are few that can match the original magic.
