Five Gymnastics Legends to be honoured by the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame

FIG posted an update on the website regarding the five gymnastics legends who are to be honoured by the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame this year. The former gymnasts are Cathy Rigby, Henrietta Onodi, Yuri Korolev, Mikhail Voronin and Eileen Langsley. What do you think of these inductees?

Swing Development

I quite like this idea from Was Watanabe of wearing small ankle weights to help with developing the swing for giants. Unfortunately our Code of Conduct states that we will not allow our gymnasts to use weights so we need to be very cautious of this. I wonder if there is a way around it – wearing shoes perhaps? My gymnasts have found it difficult learning the difference between the original bent leg swing, then onto the pike (or float) swing and now for learning giants, they have found it difficult to do the slight tap on the swing down.

I love when companies really put their minds into making a great ad. I love this Nike ad “Human Chain”. It celebrates the intensity, dynamism and determination that connects athletes in all different sports and motivates them to inspiring performances.

An interview with Shannon Miller from January which I have only just got around to reading – great stuff!

Tuam All Star Gymnastics Club are through to the semi final of the All Ireland Talent Show. As the IG website says;

“This has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase Gymnastics to a wide audience and from the feedback they have received the performance was enjoyed by folks of all ages. They are immensely proud of the opportunity to again represent their club and region and also to publicise the sport of Gymnastics throughout Ireland. ”

Dublin Sport Calender

Dublin is the European Capital of Sport for 2010. You can find a calender of events for all sports on their website. There are some gymnastics events featured in the calender (those that are being held in Dublin / Dublin region). The structure of the calender is nice, very clear to see whats going on. Nicer than trying to hunt through the Irish Gymnastics website calender of events.

Chinese Officials defend Dong Fangxiao

On Friday, FIG made the decision to strip Sydney 2000 Olympian Dong Fangxiao of her bronze medal as a result of an age scandal. Instead of being honest and admitting to an age cover up, the Chinese have said that they feel strong regret to FIG’s decision and “will further find out the relating information of this matter and reserve the right for explanation or appeal”. At this stage, I feel it would have been best for them to come clean. An appeal? It took so long to reach this decision, how long would an appeal take!

Decision made on Chinese gymnasts

FIG have released an update on their website regarding Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun. In the case of Dong Fangxiao, the Executive Committee constituted that there was a violation to the FIG Statutes and Regulations. The Executive Committee decided that in the case of Yang Yun the concrete and objective evidence available is insufficient to prove that the birth date indicated on the official documents was falsified.

The FIG Executive Committee has ruled in the case involving two Chinese gymnasts suspected of having falsified their dates of birth for the Olympic Games in Sydney (AUS) in 2000, putting an end to the proceedings.
