California running back Jahvid Best, a Heisman Trophy candidate to start the season, secured one of the most exciting and horrifying plays of the 2009 season this past Saturday on a 7-yard touchdown run in then-No. 20 Cal's 31-14 loss to Oregon State.
Best took a direct snap from seven yards out and following his blockers, saw three defenders guarding the goal line. Naturally, Best tried to jump over the defenders and in doing so, was propelled into the air by a Beaver defender, flipping in midair and coming down hard on the back of his neck from at least five feet in the air.
Best's helmet flew off on impact and he lay motionless for nearly a minute where California coach Jeff Tedford said that he briefly lost consciousness.
Best was taken off the field by a stretcher and was wearing an oxygen mask when he was carted out of the stadium.
Cal spokesman Herb Beneson said that a preliminary evaluation showed that Best sustained a concussion, but more tests were being done before a final diagnosis would be announced by the school.
Best did have movement in all of his extremities.
Unfortunately for Best, who had sustained a minor concussion last week against Arizona State, two concussions in as many weeks is something that Tedford will not take lightly.
"I'm sure that will be talked about," Tedford said. "He will be evaluated very closely, no question about it. There's no way we'd take a chance with any of our players."
Best's injury - with 6:07 remaining in the first half - silenced the crowd and brought both teams to their knees as the game was delayed 13 minutes.
Before play did resume, however, Tedford assured his players that Best was moving and he would be OK.
Arguably one of the most dynamic playmakers in the nation this year, Best has 16 touchdowns and 867 rushing yards this season for the Golden Bears.
