I was literally sitting in the…um…my second office…and I came up with a brilliant new word/phrase:

PokeBomb/PokeBombed/PokeBombing

Definition: the act of jumping in to the line of sight of an unsuspecting Pokemon Go player in order to interrupt their capture and hopefully lure them in to something more productive…like maybe a Taco Bell hat and apron. Those tacos aren’t going to make themselves!

Example: I saw this dumb ass walking around with his cell phone out front of him, so I PokeBombed him with a few of my latest hip-thrust dance moves. My Mom approved the PokeBombing.

We seriously don’t need anymore people walking around staring in to their cell phones instead of paying attention to their surroundings. Please stop.

Wow – it’s almost been 2 years since my latest blog post. Let’s see…what has happened.

Well..

Charlie was born. WOO HOO! I can’t even explain to you how much I love her – and those “other” kids as well :-P.

I took a new position as Chief Technology Officer @ Eco Automation in Newport Beach, CA.

Subsequently, I uprooted the family and moved us to Irvine, CA. That’s been a bit rough on all of us.

I started working A LOT.

Turned 36.

Seen so many exotic cars, that I’m highly desensitized (sp?) to the sight of one now. Ferrari? Meh…might as well be a Camry.

Bought another car.

Went to Cancun…again.

Worked some more.

Bought ANOTHER car.

Turned 37.

Worked even more.

Published ************** some stuff.

Watched my production API servers go down this evening during ************ some stuff…and I’m still working.

#MadeItToTheStartLine #EveryDayImHustlin

PS. I’m still married – even after/during all that “work” I’m caught up in 24/7. Thank god for you Tammi…without you, none of this crazy life is possible. #LoveYouBabe

Just read an article about a scene Will Smith did year’s ago on the Fresh Prince of Belair. I loved that show, and I’m a HUGE fan of Will Smith. There was a story he told about his Dad tearing down this huge wall at his shop and told him and his brother that they were going to rebuild it that summer (when they were on break I assume).

I guess they didn’t finish building the wall that summer, but they did eventually finish it the following spring. When they were finished, their Dad told them, “Now, don’t you all ever tell me there’s something you can’t do.”.

As Will Smith put it, “The thing I connect to is: I do not have to build a perfect wall today, I just have to lay a perfect brick. Just lay one brick, dude.”.

Love that. Just lay one…perfect…brick. Then move on to the next. Eventually, you’ll achieve your goal if you keep moving forward.

No, I didn’t delete you from my friends list, but I did deactivate my Facebook.

The list of reasons behind that decision is long and comes without explanation, however, my initial feeling…it’s awfully quiet now. A nice kind of quiet…without ads…or updates from people/brands that I likely don’t really care that much about.

I think that Facebook is great for connecting people, but at what point do those connections start to become too much noise for one to really deem necessary in their life? For myself, I’ve always found it great to unplug from the world for a little bit, but always get anxious right before I’m about to plug back in.

I think I’m always trying to look forward to anticipate my next move – positive or negative – and that creates a boat load of anxiety in me, when I should be enjoying what I’ve got around me. I can’t tell you how many times the family sits down “together”, and jumps in to their phones. :-/

#DadFail

So…I’m trying something new. No Facebook. I’m also not on Twitter much either…so if you need me, throw me some comments, call/text, or email me. Peace!

We have a client that we’re working with right now that sells a product for people with limited mobility due to a disability, and we had an amazing brainstorming session yesterday about the direction. This brainstorming session led me right back in to the theme of day #3 of the BOLO conference – story telling (from my perspective of course). Maybe I’m a little behind as far as online marketing/advertising goes, but I’m pretty sure everyone hasn’t gotten on board with this just yet.

At BOLO, I started to think about the top 3 brands I see are KILLING it in this space:

Volkswagen

Chipotle

Nike

Randomly a few years back, I saw a show on TV that featured how Volkswagen goes about creating their advertising campaigns, and what they expected from them – every one of them had some emotionally engaging tie-in to them. I never realized how important that was until I started really paying attention to the “messaging” that was coming across in various web/video/email campaigns that I had and am currently working on.

What does that look like?

“Smiles”

The ad isn’t about the cars Volkswagen sells…AT ALL…it’s about the people, and that gut intensive laugh – the kind that everyone has had – the kind that when you see, puts a smile on your face simply because of it’s presence. I especially love the messaging at the end – it’s not about the miles, it’s how you live them. Live the miles of life with a smile on your face – laugh often and loudly…from infancy to elder years.

“Feeling Carefree”

This video, again, is going after a specific market – given the promoted vehicle (Passat) and the soundtrack – I immediately know that song and it sparks a thought to childhood – specifically to bad (but amazingly memorable) 80’s movies. And then it wraps it in to today – we’ve all had those meetings where we’re sitting there doodling and thinking of something completely different – the awkward singing moment is just a bonus.

“Find Your Greatness”

Nike really hit it out of the park on this one. In my opinion, Nike’s primary market would be athletes/etc, but how awesome and powerful is this video?! A 12 year old boy who is clearly overweight is clearly not their target market…or is it? They bring in the concept of “greatness is not unique – everyone is capable to be great” – which doesn’t pin point a specific market/sport/etc. I immediately connect with this one given my struggle with weight all my life, and I’m pretty sure I shed a tear or two when I first saw this video on Super Bowl Sunday.

“The Force” – my all time favorite!

The reason I love this video so much is that I can immediately connect with it. For starters, I’m in that age group, and I am “supposed” to drive a mid-size family car like that even though I drive a 2 door sports car. Also, I have children that do crazy/cute things like that, and to top it off, Star Wars was a large part of my childhood (given the target market behind the ad), and I can connect with that theme song within a split second.

Volkswagen sells cars, not therapy, notepads & pencils, or the force.

Nike sells athletic apparel, not life coaching or personal training.

However, all of these videos sell the brand and I’m committed to bringing this quality of work to all the clients I currently work with and will work with in the future. It’s pretty freakin’ amazing stuff.

That loss yesterday was embarrassing. 58-0 against a division opponent that we already beat earlier in the year…are you kidding me? I guess that’s the way of the Arizona Cardinals though.

There’s an easy explanation for this…the defense quit (and the 8 turnovers didn’t help, but we’ve come to expect that). What has been keeping us in the games in our current losing streak? Our defense. No matter what, the defense has shown up, every single week, and produced. The offense has barely produced a fart, and that’s only because it was involuntary.

The big news this past week was about Darnell Dockett getting fined $200k for “detrimental conduct”, or, he allegedly spit in Kerry Rhodes face, and disobeyed Horton on the last drive in the Jets game to allow them to score so the offense could get back on the field.

Ugh.

The other recent news was about Adrian Wilson being demoted to base packages and seriously cutting his playing time a few weeks ago before the Atlanta game. I actually agree with this decision, and I support Whiz when he said “it worked” – they had 5 interceptions against the Falcons…the change DID work. Adrian Wilson hasn’t put up ANY effort this year. When he goes in for a tackle, he’s just leaning in with his shoulder and expecting them to go down – he’s not wrapping any one up. I get it, he’s a big guy, and he’s historically laid down some vicious hits by leaning in with his shoulder and laying the smack down, but you know what, his age and his discontent are starting to show.

There are a lot of ways you could come at the Arizona Cardinals situation to make it better, but at this point, it’s looking like they’ve lost the team. When your whole defense just quits on you, on the road, that should send a message through the whole organization. It’s time to make a change.

Whisenhunt will likely be fired in the early offseason (like the Monday after week 17), Rod Graves needs to be replaced, and Russ Grimm, although a Hall of Famer, needs to be replaced as well – our offensive line needs something that he obviously can’t give.

That leaves our best, in house option, at Ray Horton to be the HC. I don’t think that’s the smart decision. I think we need to leave Ray Horton at defensive coordinator. He’s shown that, even in tough situations, he can produce a well structured defense. I’ve heard that Chip Kelly will likely be available after the Fiesta Bowl this year…but why would he want to come to Arizona? Who else is out there? Let’s go after Nick Saban! haha ok…I’m getting ahead of myself.

Beau’s plan for success: coaching staff & offensive line. Everyone will argue that we need a quarterback, but we don’t right now, Kolb showed that he can actually play and that’s he’s pretty tough when being beat on play after play. I wonder what he’s like when he’s NOT being beat on and not having to run for his life because his offensive line couldn’t plug a hole in a free brothel.

One could also argue over the need for a good RB core that can stay healthy, but honestly, I’ll give Ryan Williams the benefit of the doubt – his injuries were both freak accidents – but he’s only got 1 chance left to prove himself to the team. He’s got to stay healthy when Beanie cannot. Beanie will not stay healthy…he proved that in college, and is the reason why he went so late in the first round, but when he is healthy, he’s a great running back.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, start shopping using Larry Fitzgerald and Adrian Wilson as anchors to new player deals and draft picks. Fitzgerald deserves to get his championship, because he’s not getting it in Arizona. Adrian Wilson’s worth may have dropped a bit in the past few weeks, but he could still pull a decent offering in the offseason.

I could seriously go on and on, but I will leave it at that. It sounds so simple to fix, but it’s likely going to be a series of largely complex moves made by the Bidwell’s to right the ship. If only it were so simple as Madden 13 – I delegated all offseason free agent activity, and oddly enough, we picked up Kurt Warner in the offseason and it’s bringing my team to life. True story. Ha!
