Wrapping up this Friday with a little research. I just received The Indie Bible 10th Edition in the mail and plan to develop a plan of attack for Fried Roots.

The publication is in it’s 10th edition and looks to be a very handy resource. For instance, there are a couple of different sections that our record label could use exposure in: “reviewers of independent music” and “radio stations willing to play independent music”.

Fried Roots is founded on the principle of developing strong strategies with a grass roots approach. The Indie Bible seems to have some very useful information for indie record labels:

4200 publications to review your music

3500 radio stations that will play your music

Marketing and Promotion tips

Indie Articles on the music business and distribution

Resources for musicians and songwriters

To give it its proper review, I will update you later with our marketing efforts and replies. This is a good start for indie musicians to begin their marketing plans, defining their sound and making this submission process effortless and effective.

Stay tuned for new instrumentals coming next week. I plan begin a new series of free music for our faithful readers.

If it ain’t Fried, it ain’t Fried Roots.

Venice Beach at 7am is breathtaking. With the sun rising low on the horizon casting long dark shadows reaching into the Pacific, I cruise the bike path enjoying the benefits of living in Southern California. It never gets tired for this local native to be Beach Cruisin’ Venice Beach.

I just learned how to ride a bike last month. It feels great! I now ride 20 miles every other day from home to Venice Beach. I feel more energy and more focus in my music and in my writing. I also had quit smoking cigarettes at the start of 2009. I feel empowered to make change within myself. That is where it all starts.

I am now investing in the most important commodity; ME! Taking the time to work on me, my hang-ups, my baggage, my issues, my problems, my life. All this effort to move ahead. I realize that I won’t be able to resolve everything, however by actively doing the work I am igniting and affecting positive change.

Download audio file (mu.mp3)

I Love the Golden State

Why? One day I had enough. I looked myself in the mirror and did not like who was looking back at me. It was a profound and deeply moving experience. I hated myself. I lived in excess and took poor care of myself. I squandered valuable friendships and viewed life in negative ways. I relished the moment when people lose.

Now I move forward, walk in the sunlight and enjoy the sea breeze. Life is relaxed and tenuous, just as the Pacific washes upon the Venice Beach. I’m ridin’ on my beach cruiser round Venice on a Sunday morning. Come Join me before the summer ends. Beach Cruisin’ for Change.

Our previous articles talked about becoming familiar with the idea of music licensing and finding the right avenues to have our music placed in various outlets such as in television, film, and gaming. I came across a great article by @buzzsonic called “Resources to Help Get Your Music In Films & TV“. This article points out different ways to find music supervisors and adding this revenue stream to your record label.
Making a label and making ends meet are right now at opposite ends of the spectrum for me. I make music and push the internet work because I see my future in it. Alongside my partner Mario Mendoza, we both work hard to produce the music we enjoy and love and strive to make what we enjoy our livelihoods. You can’t be asleep at the switch.

We bring to the table a new perspective on life. We work to integrate livelihood with self-actualization. We are doing the hard work of aligning ourselves with our mission as a company. We are entrepreneurs who understand that music and culture are product whose reach is global and a language universal. We harness the power of the internet to bring our music forth and dedicate ourselves to the promotion and cultivation of a worldwide audience.
This is not an easy task. Every day is a struggle to move forward and beyond. This work is deeply connected to our own development and growth as people.
This hip hop instrumental crept its way out of the archive, as a reminder of past collaborations. This beat was made by an old friend of mine called Eli, who is a talented graphic artist and producer. While he is wandering around somewhere on this globe, he left Fried Roots with this last instrumental years ago. It was a very important track for me personally as I got to see how music is more than chopped samples but arrangement and creativity. Eli took this old Issac Hayes track and flipped it with Reason, titled “Give Me Some”. I remember seeing beat making as more than just long loop cutting but seeing it as sound meshing, finding random harmony amongst this pool of samples.

Download audio file (Give Me Some_friedroots.mp3)

I found more fun with drum breaks and new arrangements and now sampling has become more of a craft, taking individual hits and sounds I enjoy and being the musician and creator of musical madness. Fried Roots is always there to provide that feel good hip hop that can spark any emcee out of his/her writers block. If it ain’t Fried, it ain’t Fried Roots.

You pour your blood sweat and tears into making music that you want to hear, you better be damn proud of it too. We all manifest our excitement in various ways. Some are more internal with their expression of joy while others are more external with their excitement. Either way, take pride in your work!

Leave your fears aside and allow yourself to manifest your goals and dreams.

We take the time to craft and build works of art such as paintings, sculptures and music; therefore we must enjoy the fruits of our labor. Let it be celebration, let the people gather in the square, celebrate the artist in all of us and be creative.

There is always a story to tell. That is universal and will be with us for generations to come. Technology has only made the ability to tell our stories more readily available to everyone who wishes to do so.
The art you create is an extension of yourself. Art is a creation born from our imagination blessed with inspiration and made with human innovation.

The time has come to choose your mic destiny. Be the artist who you are to be. Leave your fears aside and allow yourself to manifest your goals and dreams. Give up on what you ‘think’ you are and be you. Take pride in you, in your abilities and talents and grow with them. You will be surprised how far you get and who be around on your journey.
The biggest part in taking pride in your music is the ability to let go of it as well. Allowing your creation to live and breath on its own, the proud parent of a human creation.
The main obstacle is finding accurate information on where and how to approach this scenario. It sounds simple enough, but what are the main things to look for?

I came across Musicmarketing.net as a first solution to find music professionals to chat with. It seems to have a nice mix of songwriters, managers and other music business professionals to pick the brains of. I look forward to networking with fellow musicians and artists.

Aside from just seeking music supervisors, we also wanted to sign our music up to different licensing sites. The Music Snob has a great post called “Tips For Evaluating Music Licensing Opportunities“.
