Ok, nerds….after some research and questioning, I found out who Erykah’s artist is (I know, I’m late) and as well the meaning behind the image. I don’t think I would’ve figured this out on my own. Courtesy of Nalden:

The new album cover depicts an underwater image of Erykah wearing a suit of armor that symbolizes the tough exterior she developed to protect herself from the harsh realities of life. The armor is her old shell and now she’s liberating herself from it by climbing out of her own head so that she can be reborn. Her tuning fork is summoning the vibrations of the universe and the purple-colored tree of life and purple sky represent the 7th Chakra. The Crown Chakra right above her third eye shield, which represents peace, wisdom, and spirituality. The numerical theme of three is symbolized by three moons, three hidden babies, three trees, and three ankhs. Closer inspection reveals that Erykah’s shoulders are surrounded by many of the same objects that filled her abstract afro on the cover of New Amerykah Part One, including handcuffs, a foreclosed home, fast food, cigarettes, broken chains, and a military tank. Here, those items represent refuse and rubble from which new life grows into a vibrant garden of colorful flowers blossoming all around her.
In keeping with the concept of the cover art, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh taps into Erykah’s emotional side by thematically focusing on romance and relationships. With Part One, Erykah was standing at an apex, looking at what was going on around me politically, socially, and economically. Part Two is all about what’s hovering over Erykah, looking at what’s going on inside.

Custom Bic Buddy – NI UNA MAS

Ritzy sent me over some of her photos of her custom Bic Buddy for the upcoming Buddy Custom Show downtown LA @ the Crewest Gallery. Here is what Ritzy says about her piece:

Since March is Women History Month my 3 pieces for the 3 exhibits I’m in this month are in protest of the Femicides happening in the city of Juarez and surrounding cities in Mexico.

The Pink Cross is in remembrance of those that have been kidnapped, killed and/or raped since 1993.

I will post up the flyer for all of my LA nerds closer to the event and as well be on the lookout for a Ritzy/FreshNerd collabo coming to an online store near you very soon.

P.S. I probably should fill her in on the collabo huh?

Ace Hood Ha Ha Freestyle

Not sure why he’s still being slept on….maybe it’s his label? Either way, if you’re not feeling this freestyle then you suck. Mixtape on the way…

This one caught me off guard. If you’re not familiar with this triple threat (MC/DJ/Producer), MeLo gives us a glimpse of what’s to come from his Sonic Intercourse album this summer. Warning to all closed minded listeners….this is not boom bap music. If I had to categorize this tape, I would have to classify it as …hmmm…..House? I dunno but I do know this is fresh and outside the box.

Another reason why Foreign Exchange is one of my favorite groups. If you’re not up Yahzarah, you will be now. Upon first listen, it’s very reminiscent of Janelle Monae’s work but not as “out there” which is fine since that wouldn’t fit Yahzarah’s style. The alt/indie rock inspred, Why Dontcha Call Me No More, not only breaks all grammatical rules as far as the title is concerned but does a great job at capturing a solid melody underneath catchy songwriting. Good job by Nicolay and Phonte…

Ok nerds, week #9 freestyle. The Cincinnati representer is not lettin’ up as he stabs up the Jay Electronica classic. Mutant Level 5 bidges!

Eric Nine resides in ATL and his illustrations are pretty sick. I came across his site while I was self obsessing over my latest project and turns out Eric is feeling it (I hope). Long story short, his art is dope and he is a unique eye when it comes to his creations. They definitely stand out from most illustrations I have seen. Be sure to stop by his spot to see the rest of his work.
