Scribd нередко называют «YouTube для документов». Пользователи могут загружать на этот сайт свои рефераты, резюме, исследования, отдельные главы книг собственного сочинения. Как и в случае с популярным видеохостингом, Scribd предлагает код для вставки в блог, так что документ смогут прочесть и ваши друзья. Еще одно сходство между двумя проектами — это частое использование сервисов для распространения контента, охраняемого авторским правом. И если с «Ютюбом» бодаются медиагиганты, то к Scribd свои претензии предъявляют издатели и писатели.

Тем не менее, о своей поддержке Scribd Store уже объявили несколько крупных издательств. Компания O’Reilly, выпускающая литературу для программистов, разместила в новом магазине более 650 книг. Причем каждая из них будет продаваться в формате PDF без DRM-защиты (да еще и с возможностью ознакомления перед покупкой). Lonely Planet, издатель туристических путеводителей, планирует продавать отдельные главы, используя Scribd.

Scribd Store, похоже, устраивает всех: и издателей, и авторов, и читателей. Первым предложены более выгодные по сравнению с «Амазоном» условия сотрудничества. Писатели получили возможность продавать свои книги напрямую (Los Angeles Times приводит пример Кембла Скотта, который с каждой проданной за 10-15 долларов бумажной книги получает меньше, чем с ее цифровой копии, распространяемой за 2 доллара). Ну а читатели могут приобрести понравившееся издание со скидкой, не дожидаясь доставки почтой.

Стевен Вольфрам (Stephen Wolfram) — британский ученый, известный по своим работам в области физики элементарных частиц, космологии, теории сложности и компьютерной алгебры. Он также автор программы Mathematica, которая используется для решения систем уравнений, упрощения выражений, нахождения пределов, построения графиков функций и геометрических фигур. Именно Mathematica и легла в основу нового сервиса Wolfram Alpha.

Wolfram Alpha не занимается индексированием интернет-ресурсов, ранжированием документов по релевантности и тому подобными вещами. Работа сервиса основана на двух китах — базе знаний (фактов) и математических моделях. Например, Wolfram Alpha, зная расстояние между двумя городами, может рассчитать время полета из Лондона в Москву.

Сервис пытается сразу вычислить ответ, а не дает пользователю ссылку на веб-страницу или файл. Данные часто представлены в виде таблиц, графиков и диаграмм. Wolfram Alpha может сравнить ВВП двух стран, подсчитать содержание витамина А в 250 гр. картофеля, предоставить исчерпывающую информацию о химических элементах, рассказать о содержании батончиков Snickers и даже показать текущее положение Международной космической станции.

А с чем не справляется сервис? Пока он не понимает запросы на русском языке. Другой недостаток — не очень обширная база фактов. Например, «Вольфрам» может рассказать про одни популярные песни и ничего не знать про другие хиты.

«Вольфрам» не претендует на то, чтобы стать «новым Гуглом». Это будет удобный инструмент для исследователей и ученых. В будущем обещают добавить API для сторонних разработчиков и дополнительные возможности, которые будут доступны за плату.

Ребрендинг Америки

Журнал Paper magazine совместно с ведущими мировыми дизайнерами разработали варианты нового брендинга, целью которого было, чтобы люди снова полюбили США. В середине марта Paper magazine попросил 15 лучших “визуальных коммуникаторов” предложить свои идеи того, каким образом можно было бы осуществить ребрендинг Америки, чтобы восстановить ее репутацию и страна снова не вызывала у людей один только негатив. Письмо с предложением было разослано таким корифеям как Alex Bogusky, Dan Wieden, Ivan Chermayeff, Kevin Roberts, Andy Spade, Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Peter Buchanan-Smith, Steve Powers, Chris Johanson, Jonathan Horowitz, Mike Mills, Geoff McFetridge, Bruce High Quality Foundation и Alex Kalman. В середине 2000-х годов в Раменском был реализован проект по художественному оформлению группы типовых жилых домов, весьма необычный для России. В центре города установлено много разнообразных фонтанов и скульптур, некоторые из них созданы по мотивам советских мультфильмов.
Может это уже и было, не знаю, но, блин, как у вас здорово!

Клуб профессиональных спорщиков, созданный для тех, кто хочет научиться побеждать в словесных состязаниях. Любой пользователь сервиса может инициировать спор и предложить другим вступить в словесные баталии. Для спора определяется вознаграждение (в баллах) и выбирается арбитр, другие пользователи могут делать свои ставки и комментировать. У каждого спора есть ограниченное время его существования. Участники спора могут подавать жалобы-апелляции на вынесенный вердикт относительно обсуждений.

Интересно, что свои аргументы участники спора могут аргументировать доказательствами, например, ссылками, подтверждающими один из обсуждаемых вариантов.

Тематика обсуждаемых вопросов очень разнообразна: наука, спорт, конечно же, политика и погода, искусство, законы и многое другое. Пока наиболее интересны для обсуждения спорт, бизнес и рубрика «Прочее».

На основе активности пользователей на сайте формируется два рейтинга — игроков и судей.

Примечательно, что аудитория сервиса совсем не «гиковская», на «Спорщиках» спорят не только о преимуществах операционных систем или программных платформ, а на абсолютно разные темы вроде религии, философии и общечеловеческих отношений.

Holywars
На этом сайте обсуждаются полярные вещи, например, одни из последних: «Лесбиянки vs. геи», «Opera vs. Mozilla Firefox», «Windows vs. Linux», «Coca-Cola vs Pepsi». Большинство из наиболее обсуждаемых тем связано с IT, хотя встречаются и более универсальные темы вроде «Arsenal vs. Manchester United», «Рэп vs. Рок», «Россия vs. СССР». Споры, размещенные на страницах сайта, называются «холиварами».

Для того чтобы начать спор, нужно придумать дуальную пару понятий и заявить о ней на сайте. Другие пользователи сервиса могут добавлять свои комментарии и заявлять о поддержке одной из сторон. Для уравновешенных людей существует вариант «Нейтральная сторона». Кроме представления своих аргументов, пользователи могут голосовать за доводы других участников спора. На сервисе тоже формируется пользовательский рейтинг. Для поиска дискуссий предназначено облако тегов.

Поспорю
Тематика дискуссий этого сайта очень разнообразна. Это обсуждение товаров, политиков, вопросов из сферы науки, общественной жизни, карьеры… в общем, здесь говорят более-менее обо всем.

Хотя на самом деле, «Поспорю» нельзя назвать проектом для спорщиков «в чистом виде». Вопрос, заданный на сервисе, может содержать варианты ответов, за которые голосуют пользователи. Кроме того, они могут добавлять к вопросам свои комментарии. При этом пользователи сервиса получают оценки от других участников обсуждения.

Несмотря на общую задачу, которую решают эти сайты, каждый из них подойдет для разных ситуаций. Например, чтобы организовать опрос, лучше использовать «Поспорю». Для тех, кому не терпится сразиться с кем-то в Сети, идеальным местом будет Holywars. А «Спорщики» хороши как место тренировки в искусстве риторики.

Аналогичный сервис был когда-то и у «Яндекса», сейчас он стал частью «Яндекс.Афиши». Достоинство WiFi4free состоит в том, что он знает о точках доступа в большем числе городов, а также позволяет узнать адрес ближайшей бесплатной точки wi-fi по SMS. С другой стороны, у «Яндекса» более точные данные по Москве — они знают о 1012 хот-спотах, тогда как WiFi4Free лишь о 829.

Во времена, когда жесткий диск на 1Тб дома считается нормой, а скорость интернета измеряется мегабитами и даже десятками мегабит (к сожалению, не везде). Пользователи по всему миру начали ценить качество, но не количество: HD для видео, различные losseless для музыки.

Первое на iPhone посмотреть не удасться, так как на видео стоит ограничение  - 720х576 1,5 Mbit/s. А вот второе – волне реально.

Стоит ли тратить время и разбираться с losseless для iPhone? – Думаю стоит, результат оправдает все затраченные усилия.

Гармонические искажения у плеера Apple iPhone практически отсутствуют, уровень шума имеет очень хороший показатель, с неравномерностью АЧХ и взаимопроникновением каналов всё в порядке. Итог, достаточная хорошая общая оценка “Очень хорошо”.

Самыми распространенными контейнерами для “музыки без потерь” являются FLAC и APE (Monkey’s Audio).

FLAC (англ. Free Lossless Audio Codec — свободный аудио-кодек без потерь) — популярный свободный кодек для сжатия аудио. В отличие от кодеков с потерями Ogg Vorbis, MP3 и AAC, FLAC не удаляет никакой информации из аудиопотока и подходит как для прослушивания музыки на высококачественной звуковоспроизводящей аппаратуре, так и для архивирования аудиоколлекции.

Monkey’s Audio — популярный формат кодирования цифрового звука без потерь. Распространяется бесплатно вместе с открытым исходным кодом и набором программного обеспечения для кодирования и воспроизведения, а также плагинами к популярным медиаплеерам. Файлы Monkey’s Audio используют следующие расширения: .ape для хранения аудио и .apl для хранения метаданных. Несмотря на открытый исходный код, Monkey’s Audio не являетсясвободным, так как его лицензия накладывает значительные ограничения на использование.

Но сами FLAC и APE послушать на iPhone нам не удастся (vlc4iphone не в счет). Можно конечно сразу из интернета качать ALAC, но тут есть несколько нюансов: неизвестно с какого источника делался грэбинг (может с обычной пиратки), требований к грэбингу ALAC почти нет, тогда как к для грэббинга FLAC и APE очень жесткие требования.

Конвертировать FLAC в mp3 и иже с ними – это противоречит самой идее “losseless”.

Для начала нам определится, что делать с FLAC (или APE): “разжать” в AIFF (Apple’овский wav) или сконвертмировать в ALAC (Apple Losseless Audio Codec). В первом случае мы никак не повлияем на качество звука, так как мы просто “достанем” музыку из контейнера. Во втором же случае – мы сэкономим место на iPhone и многие говорят о том, что потери в качестве звука не будет, но я все же не стал бы этого делать – места на iPhone хватит всем (на 16ГБ влезет примерно 30-43 альбома в AIFF).

Для того, чтобы “разжать” FLAC (или APE) в AIFF нам потребуется программа xACT.

1. Добавляем в нее нужные треки и жмем “Decode”

2. Добавляем полученные файлы в iTunes и правим теги.

3. Все, теперь можно синхронизировать музыку с iPhone.

Конвертирование FLAC (или APE) в ALAC:

1. Нам потребуется XLD, в настройках выбираем “Apple Losseless

2. Открываем нужный трек(и)

2. Добавляем полученные файлы в iTunes и правим теги.

3. Все, теперь можно синхронизировать музыку с iPhone.

Для начала нам потребуется программа Foobar2000. С ее помощью “разжимаем” нужные треки в AIFF (Apple’овский wav).

И опять у нас два варианта: поправить теги и сразу залить музыку на iPhone или перегнать музыку в ALAC.

Конвертация AIFF в ALAC:

1. В iTunes Настройки-Основные-Настройки импорта поставить “Кодер Apple Losseless”

2. Затем нажимаем правой клавишей мыши на трек и выбираем “Создать версию Apple Losseless”

3. Все. Теперь можно заливать полученные треки на iPhone.

Необычный концепт представило на Нью-Йоркском автосалоне подразделение автоконцерна Chrysler – Green Eco Mobility (GEM). Миниатюрный электромобиль Peapod предназначен для поездок по городу.

Так как производитель считает своими потенциальными покупателями пользователей iPod и iPhone. Центральная панель специально разработана для использования этих устройств. Это даст возможность владельцам автомобиля использовать свой iPod/iPhone в качестве ключа зажигания.

Также iPhone возьмет на себя функции навигации, управления аудио системой автомобиля, сможет информировать вас о уровне заряда аккумулятора электромобиля и многое другое.

Согласно докладу о Autobloggreen будет разработано эксклюзивное программное обеспечение, предназначенное исключительно для Peapod превращая ваш iPhone/IPod в устройство управления.

Peapod, как и большинство современных концептов, является электрокаром – забота о окружающей среде становится модной тенденцией. Chrysler Peapod развивает скорость до 50 км/ч. Полная зарядка занимает от 6 до 8 часов, запас хода – порядка 48 км. Длина автомобиля – 2,85 м, высота – 1,7 м, ширина – 1,7 м. Машину отличают огромные боковые стекла и отличная вентиляция. Электрический двигатель мощностью 12 л. с. способен разогнать Peapod до 50 км/ч.

На сайте можно поделиться проверенными маршрутами в своем городе (сейчас доступны только Москва, Санкт-Петербург и Воронеж), рассказать остальным пользователям, где и как можно срезать путь, где легче, а где труднее всего проехать. Для последнего была создана специальная разметка — зеленая и красная, — с помощью которой прокладывается маршрут на картах.

Регистрация на сайте не требуется, авторизация происходит через OpenID, который скорее всего у вас уже есть. После входа первым делом следует изменить свои данные, а точнее город, в котором вы проживаете. Тогда помимо уже названного прокладывания маршрутов можно будет просмотреть маршруты других пользователей, голосовать за них и оставлять к ним комментарии. Кроме того, можно добавлять других пользователей в друзья: их маршруты в списке общих будут появляться на более высоких строчках.

Сегодня велосипедистам приходится лично знать друг друга, чтобы условиться о поездке и тщательно спланировать маршрут, или договариваться об этом со своими «френдами» в ЖЖ или во «В контакте». Если создателям BkMe удастся построить достаточно большое сообщество из разных городов, то компанию для «покатушек» всегда можно будет найти на их сервисе.

current music: Beck – Youthless (наконец-то я нашел что-то подходящее)

Здесь в Окленде заканчивается лето, стоят последние тёплые дни, когда ещё можно не только намочить ноги в океане, но и окунуться целиком в прохладную воду. Для ленивых выбор куда поехать на пару часиков традиционно невелик: Пиха, Муревай, Анафата, Каре Каре. Все они находятся приблизительно на одном расстоянии от дома — что-то около сорока минут на машине.

Пиха

Излюбленное место серфингистов. Говорят, там хорошие, правильно устроенные волны. Невысокие, но ровно идут и по-диагонали сваливаются. Я в этом ничего не понимаю. С горы «Львиная голова» людишки в гидрокостюмах выглядят, как семечки в кухонной раковине. Песок коричнево-чёрный, плотный и очень горячий в жаркие дни. Купаться на Пихе нельзя — ямы, течения. Особенно ярых любителей кататься на досках почти ежедневно вылавливают в нескольких километрах от берега. Команде спасателей скучать не приходится. Туда постоянно требуются добровольцы. Пиха нормальное место, поплюхаться, погулять, на закаты посмотреть. А так — не.

На нижеприведённом видео мы с товарищем залезли, куда не нужно лезть и получили по заслугам.

Муревай

Там песок вулканический: чёрный и мелкий, как пыль. Мыться после поездки на Муревай приходится особенно тщательно. Этот пляж тоже популярное место для любителей болтаться в воде двадцать минут, чтобы прокатиться на волне десять секунд. И кроме того прибежище для колонии чаек. Поясняющие таблицы рассказывают о том, как колония птиц со временем занимает всё больше площади. Я всё планирую подсчитать, как долго займёт у чаек захватить Новую Зеландию целиком. На каменистом берегу китайско-маорийский люд ловит обычно рыбу. Купаться на Муревае тоже чревато. Зато можно покататься на 4WD вдоль линии прибоя. Так себе место. Однако, именно там мы отметили чужеродный праздник рождества Санта Клауса и какого-то святого. С барбекю, музыкой и танцами.

Анафата

Если по дороге на Пиху свернуть вправо, то через несколько километров грунтовой дороги и двадцать минут спуска по узкой тропинке можно попасть на пляж Анафата. Пыльная извилистая дорога и необходимость ходить ногами делают это место на порядок менее оживлённым, чем прочие пляжи. У входа табличка с текстом вроде «Уважаемые гости пляжа, этот пляж живое существо, давайте не будем ему мешать жить» за подписью каких-то торчков, живущих на склоне. Почему торчков? Потому что место для всякого рода психотропных и не очень опытов идеальное. Помню, раз встретили там ребят под грибами, те очень рады были видеть живой костёр. Ах, да, в Новой Зеландии нельзя разводить открытый огонь, поэтому, чтобы картошку испечь в углях, приходится забираться куда-нибудь подальше. Например на Анафату.

Купаться там само собой нельзя, это, говорят, ещё опаснее, чем на Пихе.

Анафата — первый пляж, что я увидел в Новой Зеландии. Оттого, наверное, и по сей день называю его любимым. Фотографировать я тогда, как видите, не умел. А в этот раз, когда на прошлых выходных мы туда добрались, предательски села батарейка.

Каре Каре

Находящийся на краю полуострова пляж с незапоминающимся названием Каре Каре, пожалуй, смесь описанных мною предыдущих трёх. Чёрно-коричневый песок, огромные песчаные пространства, горы со множеством тропинок для гуляний. То тут, то там попадаются выброшенные волнами на берег медузы и водоросли. Думаю, лучшее место, если вы хотите устроить праздник своей собаке. Больше всего мне, пожалуй, понравилась десятиминутная дорога через лес от парковки к пляжу.

Последние две фотографии, ради презентации которых, собственно и был затеян этот пост, неплохо, мне кажется, вписываются в Лесную серию, которая уже не раз была показана в этом ЖЖ. Посмотрите, если пропустили.

Автомобиль приводится в движение сразу тремя моторами и новой шестиступенчатой роботизированной коробкой передач с двумя сцеплениями.

Основной двигатель — 163-сильный (290 Н•м) трёхцилиндровый турбодизель объёмом 1,5 л.

Ему помогает крутить заднюю ось электромотор мощностью 51 л.с. (290 Н•м), а ещё один электродвигатель приводит в движение переднюю ось.

Электродвигатель на передней оси развивает 80 л.с., но стоит придавить акселератор на 30 секунд, и мощность вырастает до 112 л.с.

При следующем нажатии — до 139 л.с. Правда, всего на 10 секунд. После нехитрых подсчётов получается, что максимальная мощность внушительная — 356 л.с. Крутящий момент — 800 Н•м.

Двери в стиле «гильотины» выбраны с одной лишь целью — так проще попадать на оба ряда сидений.

Зарядка литиево-ионных батарей от бытовой розетки (220 вольт) займёт всего 2,5 часа.

Если же вам удастся раздобыть сеть с напряжением в 380 вольт, данная процедура отнимет всего 44 минуты. Частично заряд помогает сохранить система рекуперации энергии при торможении.

Что касается дизеля, то он расходует жалкие 3,76 л на 100 км. И хотя бак вмещает всего 25 л, создатели уверяют, что при полной заправке и максимальном заряде батарей Vision сможет проехать 690 км.

Разгон до сотни занимает 4,8 с, а максимальная скорость ограничена электроникой на уровне 250 км/ч.

Аэродинамике машины уделили особое внимание. В результате коэффициент лобового сопротивления — всего 0,22.

Кроме того, за оптимальное распределение энергии и готовность автомобиля отвечает специальный компьютер. Он при помощи различных систем (навигация, start/stop, датчик дождя, камера ночного видения, активный круиз-контроль) анализирует ситуацию и чуть ли не сам управляет автомобилем.

Получается, что на Vision возможно всё: гонять, заряжать, экономить, беречь природу и самого себя.
