All of this rain has most of us singing the blues but there is always one thing that makes me finally feel like summer is on it’s way, Hanging Baskets!!  I love pulling up to my house and seeing how much my baskets have grown that day or what beautiful flowers have started to bloom!  One of the greatest things about our Large Hanging Baskets is that they always make a statement.  My neighbors going on walks often ask me where I got them!

 

Mother’s Day weekend is always a busy one for us, but we still have lots of unique combinations ready for you!  One thing that is different about our hanging baskets is that we plant each and every one of them by hand!  So when you come to pick out your baskets you have a chance to ask your questions directly to the grower!  Don’t forget to pick-up some fertilizer to keep them looking great through the whole season.  We suggest Jack’s Classic 20-20-20 and have found that it continues to feed the plants along with the blossoms all season long!!

With all this rain it has been hard to find the time to plant my veggie gardens!  If you are in the same  boat and still need some edibles to plant stop by we have a table filled with them!  We have also had a hard time getting in all of our veggies planted for our summer season of produce and even made some beds inside the greenhouses this year to speed up Mother Nature!  One program that we offer and still have room in is our Community Supported Agriculture Program, also known as a CSA!  You sign-up and get veggies and fruits for 18 weeks from June to the end of September!  We also have an added bonus for our members with free admission to our Strawberry Festival and a U-pick bonus of Strawberries!  To see more information about our CSA visit http://www.fpgardens.com/french_prairie_csa_harvest_box.htm!

 

Something we tried new this year is a Dinner Series, called Grilling in the  Garden!  Our first dinner is next week Thursday, May 19th and starts at 6pm.  Dinner costs $30 per person and spots are still available call 503-633-8445 to reserve your spot now!  Dinner menu consists of:

• Fresh Green Salad made with freshly harvested greens topped withroasted beets, crumbled goat cheese, & a creamy poppy dressing.

• Grilled Stuffed Pork Chops loaded with local goat cheese & a pestofilling covered in an apple glaze with a side of grilled local asparagus &  locally made fresh pasta in a fresh basil & spinach pesto. The entree features farm fresh pork grown on our farm.

• Apple Crisp featuring Fuji Apples from the late autumn harvest at French Prairie Gardens.

Katey, Albert & Sienna Meza 2010 Harvest Festival

Here’s a few things we are thankful for:

We rang this year in with a new addition to our family.  Sienna Maria Meza was born January 5, 2010 and arrived a month early!  Sienna’s Mom, Katey Meza is an Owner here at French Prairie Gardens.  Many of you who have visited this year may have seen Baby Sienna who gets to spend her days at the farm with Mom, Grandpa Farmer John, Grandma Karren, Aunt Stacy & Uncle Farmer Eric.

This last August Farmer Eric & his new wife Lisa got married.  It was a beautiful ceremony at the St. Paul Catholic Church and an amazing reception out at the farm.  Here’s a few photos from their special day!

Coming up this next January I (Farmer Stacy) will be marrying my best friend, Derek Bunke, barefoot on a beach in Maui.  Not only will this be a huge moment in my life, but it will be an amazing vacation with our family.  Stay tuned for photos coming after the first of the year!

If you have even been out to the farm you might have caught a glimpse of Farmer Eric snitching one of our farm fresh cookies from the bakery case.  It’s definitely a daily occurrence, but who can blame him…they are simply irresistible.

 At the heart of French Prairie Gardens lies our farm fresh bakery. My mom Karren has this amazing ability to produce handmade creations. Delicious smells of apple, cinnamon and fresh fruit are always swirling from the kitchen. Trays of fruit scones, muffins, cookies and pies line the bakery case; each is hand-made by Karren, preserving the yummy tastes of the farm.

Our baked goods are available everyday and I can’t imagine my day without one of her delicous treats!
