If you’re looking to be an aspiring stock photographer, here are some valuable tips for you before you decide on whether to start selling stock photos online.

1) Learn the rules before you break them
Every profession depends on the skills you obtain and the mental and physical resources you put in. There are good reading materials out there on stock photography. You can learn new things and even put new ideas to use. Your best bet before starting off your career would be to understand the trade, learn the requirements, and start shooting.

2) Concept-selling
Stock photography isn’t rocket science and it’s easily learnable. If you keep your pictures simple and to the purpose, your career graph will immediately look up. It’s important to remember that you have to give what designers want, and anything abstract won’t really sell. In order to improve your sales, understand what buyers would be interested in.

3) The more, the merrier
Your gadget is going to be your primary investment in stock photography and after that everything depends on your talent and acquired skills. Sharp and clean pictures with emphasis on a theme definitely sell; you’ll want to take as many pictures as you can so that your chances of selling pictures increase. It’s a probability game and as long as you keep clicking, you’re sure to gain fame.

4) Click at home
It’s impossible for you to go to exotic locations and shoot nature, waterfalls and wildlife every week. Your city offers a wide scope for photography, and a strategically shot traffic signal could prove to be better than the picture of a waterfalls.

5) Avoid cliché’s
Just because you think that somebody else’s photo of the Niagara is impressive, you shouldn’t try to get the same angle – it’s your creativity and skill that’s going to sell a good picture, not your ability to replicate. Think out of the box, try new angles, and it doesn’t matter if you shoot the trite things, but your style and touch should be able to add a visual appeal to it.

6) Color, aesthetics and more
It’s not surprising that only colorful and attractive pictures sell – the aesthetics of the picture and the visual effects are the most important components of a picture. Nobody wants to see the things the way they are; your photos should represent the things in color and glory as one would find them in Utopia.

7) It’s about how hard you get hit and keep going
Not every photography site accepts your picture, but it doesn’t mean that all sites will reject it. It’s important to learn the norms of the site and cater to them. Your rejected picture from one site could sell like hot pancakes in another site. As long as you don’t take rejection personally and keep going with your trade, success will find you.

8) Keywords
It’s important to understand that just because your picture is perfect and a lot of sites accept it, it’s not going to sell. The visibility of the picture is the most important thing, and for people to be able to find what they’re looking for amidst a myriad other photos, its’ imperative to add a description, a bunch of keywords, and synonyms of keywords appertaining to the picture.

9) Photoshop helps
You may be brilliant at your art, but still the final touches and color shading are important. If you know Photoshop, there’s nothing like it. It’s important to invest some money in a good editing application, learn it, and use it to add life and beauty to the pictures.

10) Never stop learning
There’s no such entity as a know-it-all; even if you’re an expert, there’s nothing wrong in pursuing a course in stock photography and reading books so that you can have an indefinitely good learning experience.

Industry – More Info
An industry unknown to many. It is not where you get hired directly to take photographs, but where you take snaps and then people pay for the rights to use your creations. You have to work towards building your portfolio, it’s a hard profession, and you can’t make a quick buck, but once you make your mark, it can lead to good money and a tiny bit of fame. Most of all; enjoy it. The rest will come with time.

Keep researching and working hard and it will pay off. Being part of communities such as Dreamstime can also help as you can learn from others who are also active in the same arena trying to do what you are trying to do.

Hipstamatic, is an intriguing photography app which aims to bring back the good old days of analogue picture taking. This may seem like an odd endeavour, but analogue pictures were less reliable than their digital successors, and often provided intriguing, unpredictable results. So how did Hipstamatic do?

This app is available for download in the UK (£1.19) and also in the USA ($1.99). It works on the iPod Touch and the iPhone.

You get given a choice of three films, lenses, and flashes which provided different results depending on the combination used. To change an element of the camera, you simply slide your finger over it and slide it to one side. The next option then appears and takes its place. Once you have your three elements sorted out, it is time to take the picture.

The viewfinder of hipstamatic is a small affair in the middle of the screen. You do feel like you are looking down a view finder when you line up your shot which can give rather mixed results. (See photo). This is however all part of the appeal.

Navigation on the app was ok but not fantastic. I’m not sure but this maybe deliberate, as old wet film cameras could be as well. Either way it added to the feel of the app, which is a clever touch. One of the pleasing elements about this app is the different effects different combinations of film, flash, and lens provide.

It is also possible to share the pictures you take on Facebook and Flickr, and other lenses, flashes, and film can be bought from the Hipstamart.

The graphics of the camera I found were sublime. They did not feel like graphics but an internal part of the phone. When I was changing elements, it felt like I was tinkering with something internal rather than just pressing a graphic on the screen.

Hipstamatic, also provides information on each lens, film, and flash so you get an idea on what effects will be created.

It is not difficult to imagine becoming immersed in Hipstamatic, as the app has a lot of features, and general intrigue about it. The creators Synthetic Infatuation, have created an app that is original, fascinating, and for the price, excellent value for money.

This is an app designed for creative artistic urges to implement effects on photos stored in your phone, or ones you take. As you can imagine, the one in the picture is one I took for the review, though me and that Coke can do share a special bond.

The application is available to buy now, in the UK it is £1.19 (see app store) and in the USA it is $1.99 (see app store). It also works on the iPod Touch.

ToonPaint, creates a sketch of the picture, and then you can colour it in or draw on it. Either way, by moving your finger over parts of the image you want to colour will result in the image being coloured accordingly. Cleverly, you can also move the image around and zoom in, so finer detail can be applied.

ToonFx, have also provided options to make the creative process more interesting. There is a good colour palette and a range of brush sizes, together with more advanced options such as adjusting the detail and colouring of edges, and background.

Navigation comes from four menus and on screen painting. The painting was fairly straight forward to get to grips with, once I worked out the best way to manipulate the image.

The beauty of ToonPaint is that it is easy to use without being too simple or complicated. As a doodling App it strikes the perfect balance. Microsoft Paint and Photoshop Pro it is not.

If doodling is your thing, then this could well be worth the asking price. I found it good fun, and would use it again to kill time.

It is also possible to upload your masterpiece to Facebook, so you can show it to your friends before getting your work commissioned in an art gallery.
