WonderKing Online is a South Korean 2D MMORPG already released in Korea and Japan a few years ago, and now getting ready to make its North American debut. Let’s learn more about it.

FreeMMOGamer: Can you introduce yourself and your role on WonderKing?

My name is Alex Kim and I am the Product Manager of WonderKing.

FreeMMOGamer: WonderKing is a cute Japanese-style 2D MMORPG. Do you think the artwork will appeal to American players as much as it did to the Asian crowd? And it will be played mostly by what demographics, in your opinion?

The Eastern culture has had a big breakthrough in America. Anime and Asian comics are one of the biggest influences in artwork and design today. In addition to that, we believe that the colorful displays of WonderKing appeals aesthetically to users of all ages who appreciate a vibrant 2D environment.

FreeMMOGamer: In a time when 3D is used in most MMOs, do you think the 2D is finally ready to make a comeback?

More than making a comeback, I feel as if 2D has not tapped into its full potential. When comparing a 3D environment to a 2D one, it is incorrect to say one is better than the other, but that they have their individual strengths and controls. For example, 3D has the edge in 360 surroundings, but 2D has the edge in expert control and exciting elements of game-play that the current generation of gamers has not been exposed to.

FreeMMOGamer: What are the biggest challenges you’re facing in the conversion process, and are you introducing any relevant changes?

There are a few challenges such as communicating with our overseas team. There have been really long nights trying to coordinate with them. It is safe to say that our current version of WonderKing is vastly different from the previous versions. There have been relevant changes in everything from character skills to some map design. There are also additional features in our version of WonderKing that have never been seen before.

FreeMMOGamer: What are the biggest features in WonderKing, the things that, in your opinion, will charm players?

WonderKing boasts one of the most sophisticated PvP experience on a 2D environment. WonderKing PvP has proven itself to be similar to intense chess matches. Waiting for your opponent to show an opening or triggering a status effect through use of correct skills, and accurate targeting when launching one’s attacks are few of the many elements of WonderKing PvP.

WonderKing also has a combat combo system that is unique for each character class. These combos are unlocked by tapping into a class’ skill tree. As you level higher into the game, character control becomes more and more advanced. What’s even better is that you can bring your skills and put them to the test by challenging other players to a PvP duel. Soon, we will introduce one of the most hyped features that WonderKing has to offer: The Castle Siege.

WonderKing features a story that players can be immersed in. WonderKing puts the Role-Playing back into RPGs with many key features such as the “Monster Book” system that we currently have in place. It transforms players into the monsters that they’ve encountered and may even boost stats to bolster fighting capabilities.

FreeMMOGamer: WonderKing is on Closed Beta. Are you getting a lot of feedback from it?

We are getting incredible feedback from our Closed Beta community. We have been very interactive with our users and they have responded with a passion that surpassed our expectations. We know that the WonderKing Closed Beta community really wants to push the game to great heights, and we assure them that we will not fail them.

FreeMMOGamer: When do you expect the Open Beta to begin, and when is the final WonderKing version due?

Currently, we have announced that the WonderKing Closed Beta III is coming to an end soon. We have Open Beta scheduled for the later part of November and official launch sometime during the remaining part of 2009.

In a recent interview, FreeMMOGamer learned a lot about Dragon Oath, a huge Asian success about to be released in the North American market. Now it’s time to know more about the past and the present of Dragon Oath in a exclusive interview with Martin Tan, General Producer at ChangYou.com (US) Inc.

FreeMMOGamer: When we first spoke, Dragon Oath was about to start the Closed Beta. How is it going?

M: Our Closed Beta has been a great success. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are very happy with the comments and activities we are seeing in the game. Last week we saw the creation of our first guild city, a task in our game that is very hard to achieve especially with the limited time we have been in beta. I even went to a wedding in game that was well attended. The players are especially interested in our huge variety of pets and mounts. They can actually breed their own pets and mounts. That is something they never found in other games. Users are also thrilled by the 24/7 continuous live in-game events. No other game has ever offered this.

FreeMMOGamer: Any major changes suggested by players? Anything that you just thought: “That would be great to have”?

M: I am sure we will get more player suggestions as we go into Open Beta and we will look at the possibilities of using this player feedback in future releases as we are always interested in what the player would like to see. The great thing however is that the game has been out in Asia for over 2 years, so players have had many ideas already incorporated into the game. For example, when we first launched Dragon Oath in Asia, it didn’t have as many pets and mounts as today. Later, we added more and more of them after our users told us what other types of pets and mounts they would like to have in the game. Also, our pets originally didn’t carry armor sets. But later we added this function when we heard from gamers that is what they want. Players in the US benefit from all this extra input from veteran users.

Also, we are opening many new features for the Open Beta, such as “Martial Arts Battle”, in which every class will choose its contestants and all members of the winning class will receive 3x quest rewards of normal for a period of time after the event. To celebrate the Open Beta launch, we will hold special events both in-game and off-line. Many great gifts will be given away. FreeMMOGamer: Did you find any new obstacles? Something discovered during the Closed Beta that you weren’t expecting to be so much trouble?

M: Translation was difficult in a game this big. Often it is hard to express some ideas when going from Chinese to English. So our localization team, which consists of American veteran gamers who are bilingual, really worked hard on this. Just for a small episode, they would translate multiple times until our local testers say it is almost perfect. So the Closed beta was very helpful. Now we feel we are ready for the launch of the game.

FreeMMOGamer: How long until the Open Beta? Do you think by then the game will be mostly finished and polished?

M: The Open Beta begins on Nov. 5th, at 4 P.M. (PST). That is when we will restart our server “Zion” after a 12-hour shutdown. Actually, Dragon Oath is already a highly polished game. What we brought to the U.S. market is an ultimate version after 3 years of constant developments and updates in Asian market.

FreeMMOGamer:How big do you expect Dragon Oath to be in North America, in terms of player acceptance?

M: Players that give Dragon Oath a try will find something really unique and different from what they are used to playing. For example, in our game, marriage has an actual in-game function, and when you adventure with your spouse in the game you gain increase experience point benefits. So ultimately it will depend on if players are looking for similar experiences to what they have in the past from dozens of other games, or if they want something different. Dragon Oath provides familiar concepts of other games, like questing, guilds, pets, and mounts, but also include news ways of doing things, for example the experience points you earn through questing can be used to increase your level and stats, or buy new skills. Most games give you free skills just for leveling up. This change in a core concept really makes spending your experience points exciting; it is not about just getting to the next level. We are excited to see the level of acceptance to these new ideas and look for ways to improve Dragon Oath and future games based on the feedback we get from our first launch of a game in the US.

FreeMMOGamer: Do you have a definitive date for the final release or you’re planning on taking some more time to fix whatever comes, and even add new content along the way?

M: Our final release is scheduled around Mid-November. We will make an announcement regarding that later. Right now, we focus on making minor adjustments here and there to better serve our users.

Combat Arms: Billions of explosives served

Nexon America’s FPS Combat Arms is about more than just shooting at other players, it’s also about blowing them up. And Combat Arms players have tried their best to blow up anyone in their path, throwing 1.5 billion hand grenades since the game launch in 2008.

“Our players seem to be taking to heart that ‘close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades’ with the amount of bombs thrown,” said Combat Arms producer Graham Kays. “Sometimes, it’s the perfect throw, other times it is magnificent timing and for some of us, it’s just dumb luck. Regardless, fragging with grenades is always a good time.”

In fact, nearly 240 million times, players have been close enough to those grenades to be blown to bits. That’s an impressive percentage of the more than four billion players killed while playing Combat Arms.

Grenades are varied and plentiful in Combat Arms, as players can select from six different varieties. The standard M67 is always handy when trying to blow somebody up. Players can also upgrade to the M67 two pack, which allows for two to be carried. The M69HE Frag packs a stronger wallop for those times when multiple kills are needed. While others like to cause a slow burning death with M-23F incendiary grenade or G7A gas grenade. For players who choose to use grenades as a source of surprise, the M18 smoke grenade creates a thick fog to confuse the enemy or hide your movements. The XM-84 flash grenade is the perfect way to blind your foes before defeating them with a machine gun or melee weapon.

Angels Online: The Patron Beasts Unveiled

Four abysmal creatures have begun to rise. Beginning Halloween night, they have started to make a frightening comeback. While Angels were wearing their Halloween costumes and pulling wild pranks on one another, something was lurking in the dark shadows. A special Trick and Treat swap hosted by the Angels Online team was a creepy party, including some guests invited from Hell. Those who kept these guests entertained earned a treat sweeter than candy: the chance to befriend one of the four famous Patron Beasts.

The four main cities located on the continent of Eden have never been more glamorous. Even though Lucifer’s army never pauses in their attempts to batter the city walls and bring them down, those living inside enjoy relative peace and prosperity. Most of them are only now hearing the names of the four Patron Beasts for the first time. Hiding deep beneath the ground, these mysterious forces are protecting their cities.

Of the four, the Fiery Cerberus, Patron Beast of Shadow City, is the first to make its appearance in the game. Given its duties are to watch the gate of Hell and let evil spirits escape to perpetrate crimes across the continent of Eden, it is no surprise that it is an ugly-looking, malicious creature. With three heads, a dragon’s tail, and a grim look on its face, it can strike fear into its opponents at a glance. In addition to its deadly teeth, it sports sharp blades that cover its steel armor and can tear its foes to pieces with its sharp claws. It has an amazing movement speed, such that no one in Eden could ever dream of usurping its title as Fastest Runner.

Trickster Online: Major Update

items from their cards by playing a matching game. More importantly, it gives Tricksters access to the Secret Cards of Caballa Island. When Tricksters find all 16 secret cards they will be granted access to the new and exciting Enlightenment.

Enlightenment
The path to becoming a true Trickster has been long and, thus far, unending. Now players will be given a chance to become a true Trickster and unlock the Guardian that will protect them. Once Tricksters find all 16 cards they will be granted access to a special series of quests that will plant the Soul Seed within them. The Soul Seed will carefully watch the actions of the Trickster and form a guardian inside it. When the Soul Seed is ready it will unlock the Trickster Guardian.

Guardians
There are four guardians: Magic, Charm, Sense and Power. The nature of the Trickster will determine the guardian a Trickster receives. When the guardian is active, it will follow the Trickster and protect the Trickster with its life. Guardians are essentially combat pets that
will attack and help the Trickster.
