MOVIE REVIEW: Wanderlust

This movie review for "Wanderlust" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

I watched both the regular and the "red band" (R-rated) trailers for Wanderlust before the screening, but the movie was even raunchier than its trailers led me to believe it would be. Most of the time the jokes in it were pretty funny, though, and the audience was laughing throughout the film. Although the movie held my interest for most of its runtime, there were a few scenes where it unfortunately slowed down a bit, too.

George (Paul Rudd, Our Idiot Brother) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston, Horrible Bosses) are Manhattanites who have just bought their very own "microloft" (aka, studio apartment) in the West Village. Linda is still "trying to find her major," as George puts it, but currently she has made a documentary about penguins with cancer, which she is trying to pitch to HBO. George works in an apparently corrupt office, as one day the FBI brings his boss outside in handcuffs; George, therefore, needs a new job. When Linda's documentary doesn't sell either, they decide to sell their apartment and move to Atlanta to live with George's moronic brother (Ken Marino, TV's Childrens Hospital) and his wife, and George will work for him until they are back on their feet.

On the way down to Atlanta, they stop at the Elysium Bed and Breakfast for a night, and they meet a host of crazy characters, while at the same time having one of their best nights in recent memory. When things with George's brother don't work out, they come back to Elysium, and agree to stay there for two weeks to see if they like it.

Jennifer Aniston's real-life boyfriend, Justin Theroux (Your Highness), is one of the Elysium residents, which also include Alan Alda (Tower Heist) as the its founder; Malin Akerman (The Bang Bang Club) as a woman who believes in "free love"; and Joe Lo Truglio (TV's Backwash), as a nudist, among others. The Elysium cast definitely fits the "hippie" stereotype, but George and Linda are surprised to find out that they fit in very well with them - at least at first.

Maybe see this film. It had a lot of hilariousness in it, but it was also very, very raunchy, which isn't everyone's "cup of tea"; a memorable scene near the end includes the guests at a nudist wine convention running down a hill, away from a car. Some of the jokes were a little over the top but a lot of these were funny as well. Rudd and Aniston are a good pair here, and so are the commune dwellers, and Rudd's brother and his wife (who are rich, but basically hate each other) made for a nice subplot. It will be interesting to see how other critics and audiences rate Wanderlust, as the script was overall sound but it did have a few slow parts throughout it.

Wanderlust is in theaters now and is rated R with a runtime of 98 minutes.

MOVIE REVIEW: Act of Valor

This movie review for "Act of Valor" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Act of Valor is interesting because it didn't actually start out as a movie: originally, it was to be a documentary about Navy SEALS, and it then changed into a recruitment video. Finally, the directors had the idea of making it into an actual feature-length movie, which is what you will see in theaters today. The Navy SEALs portrayed in the film are all active duty Navy SEALs in real life, as well, and although the acting may suffer because of this, the situations they find themselves in are all too familiar for them.

The film starts out with a kidnapping of two CIA agents by terrorists, who had blown up a device at an international children's school that same week. The Navy SEALs are deployed to secure and stop the terrorists, and they find out that the terrorists are planning on smuggling immigrants into the U.S. via Mexico as suicide bombers. The immigrants will be wearing vests that are undetected by metal detectors, thus proving very dangerous, as they can get through any security system. The SEALs only lead is a man who has been working with the terrorists, and they corner him on his yacht in the ocean to try and get information out of him. They must find the immigrants and stop them from entering the U.S. before it is too late.

The actual SEALs in this film were listed in the credits, but are not listed in IMDb or anywhere else, most likely because they want to remain as anonymous as possible. The film was actually shot at a training facility, but some of the gunfire in it was real, and in some scenes you could definitely see this. There are also a few professional actors in the movie - Roselyn Sanchez (TV's Without a Trace) played one of the kidnapped CIA agents, whose was undercover, and Alex Veadov (Drag Me to Hell) played the man assisting the terrorists - but the rest of the cast was comprised of the SEALs and their actual families. In a short clip played before the film, the directors spoke about a scene where the SEALs were saying goodbye to their (real) families before deployment, and how the (fake) tears actually turned into real ones, as their families have been in that position many times before.

Yes, see this film. Although the acting was not great (as SEALs aren't professional actors), the situations and the action scenes in the movie were very good and very realistic. If this was a "normal" movie, I would say that the ending was a bit cliche and/or has been "done before," but because the film was based on actual missions, that's null and void. Act of Valor will make you realize how much the people who fight for our country and our safety sacrifice each day, and how they are never sure if each time they say goodbye to their family will actually be their last time seeing them.

Act of Valor is in theaters now and is rated R with a runtime of 101 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

MOVIE REVIEW: Gone

This movie review of "Gone" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Amanda Seyfried has come a long way since 2004's Mean Girls, and Gone showcases her at her best. Although there are various supporting characters throughout the film, the movie focuses on her character, for the most part, and audiences must decide if her character really did get abducted two years ago or if it's all in her head, as the police seem to think.

Jill (Seyfried, In Time) lives in Portland (Oregon) with her sister, Molly (Emily Wickersham, I Am Number Four), a student. Jill works nights at a local diner, and she's vigilant about walking by herself at night; in one scene, a man wearing a hoodie walks briskly down the street towards Jill, who crosses to the other side of the street to avoid him, just in case. One night, Jill returns from work around 6:30am and goes to wake up Molly, who has an exam that day; Molly, however, is nowhere to be found. Jill quickly canvasses the house, but all she finds missing are her sister's purse and an old picture taken out of a picture frame. Panicked, she drives to the police station, and tells them that the person who abducted her two years ago, from the very same house, has taken Molly. They also must find her quickly because he will probably kill her that night, like he intended to do with Jill.

A new police officer, Hood (Wes Bentley, There Be Dragons), is taken with Jill's story and believes her, until another detective, Powers (Daniel Sunjata, One For the Money), tells her more of Jill's story: they never found the hole in the woods where she claimed her abductor had taken her, even though they searched high and low for it. Jill's parents had died within a few month of one another, and she had been on suicide watch in the hospital immediately after; she also has been in and out of psych wards. Jill said her abductor grabbed her from her bed, and that there were bones in the hole of other girls who had died there; however, there were no witnesses and nothing to back up Jill's story. Jill knows the police are not going to help her, and in fact think that she is lying, so she must find her sister herself, before she runs out of time.

Yes, definitely see this movie. The film was a lot better than I thought it would be. It's sort of a mix of Twilight - scenery-wise only, with sweeping overhead views of the forest, and also made by the same company, Summit Entertainment - and The Lovely Bones, in that this captor was just as cunning as the murderer in that movie. Seyfried is at her best here, and the flashbacks we see of her struggling to get free of the hole are powerful, in that they are sparse but leave a lasting impact. It's also interesting to try and figure out if her character is completely insane and prone to paranoia, or if she truly did get kidnapped the first time; from the flashbacks, I assumed that she did, but the police refused to believe her.

I was debating whether to give this movie 4 or 4.5 stars out of 5, but I am going with the lower rating because there were still some loose ends that I would have liked to have seen answered. Why, for example, did Jill's captor abduct her the first time? We see that she is abducted from her bed in her home - which, for some reason, she never moved out of, even though the kidnapper was still free somewhere - but no other back story is given. Since then, Jill took some self-defense classes, and has gotten smarter; but not too smart, apparently, since she agrees to meet the kidnapper back in the woods, hoping that he has Molly. I also wondered why the police didn't keep looking for the kidnapper, especially since more and more murders kept popping up in the park area. Despite these unanswered questions, however, Gone is a fast-paced thriller that is definitely worth seeing.

Gone is in theaters today, February 24th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 94 minutes. 4 stars out of 5.

I was sent a package of items to help me & my family with our oral health challenge

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, so there’s no better time to think about family oral care...

On Thursday, February 16th, I. attended an oral care information session with Listerine® dental experts that enlightened me on facts about dental health that I did not know. Since I was a child, my mom always made sure that I brushed my teeth twice a day and I taught my son the same thing. But I will admit that flossing is a habit that came much later in life. And using mouthwash is something that I don't do often.

But during the oral care information session, I learned some facts that made me want to change up my oral care routine. Like that fact we all need to rinse daily since brushing alone misses 75% of our mouths. And that 50% of children will have a cavity or filling between the ages 5 and 9. And in a survey conduced by Listerine® and Reach® it was found that 1/3 of American don't eat their favorite foods or smile in photos because of dental problems and 15% don't kiss their loved ones because of dental issues.

These are pretty tough facts to ignore.

A chart to help us stay on track with our oral care challenge

So starting on tomorrow, I and my family will be joining other bloggers and their families to be part of the Listerine® and Reach® Oral Care Challenge. As the tax deadline grows near, we all go on a search for the all the necessary forms and statements. When Tax Time rolls around, organization is key to finishing our taxes by the deadline in April.

I usually use this time of the year to clean out and straighten up my office. All the drawers are opened and the files are sorted. The desk top is cleaned and dusted. So when I was asked to review the X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener by Elmer's, I jumped at the chance. You see, the Spira is not like any pencil sharpener that I have even seen. My son and I have both been using a battery operated pencil sharpener that I bought him two years ago. While it is functional, it is not the prettiest thing that I have ever seen. The X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener is very beautiful and looks like a work of art.

The X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener stands 6 inches tall and 3 inches wide. This attractive sharpener has an X-ACTO helical steel cutter and features a large, easy to empty shavings receptacle. With a press of a button, the “trap door” opens at the base of the sharpener for easy shavings disposal.

The Spira is available in three colors: black, white and red. Since I love red, I picked out a Red X-ACTO Spira Electric Pencil Sharpener for my office. It fits in right at home with my office setup and it is a pleasure to look at on a daily basis. My son is even using it now instead of his old pencil sharpener. He knows good taste when he sees it.

I also received an additional $3 off the Spira at Walmart by using this coupon. MOVE REVIEW: This Means War

This movie review for "This Means War" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

I had heard various reviews of This Means War before I saw a screening of it, because it had screened a few times already in the metro Detroit area. Some people had thought it was horrible, and others though it was really cute. I found the movie to be uneven, hilarious and times and unfunny at others. Even so, This Means War is a good "fluff" movie, or one to save for a matinee.

FDR (Chris Pine, Unstoppable) and Tuck (Tom Hardy, Warrior) work together in the CIA. When the movie opens, they are at a party about to bust some bad guys. The mission goes awry, however, and one of the bad guys ends up dead; his brother, the CIA cautions, will be wanting revenge on the two of them. Shortly afterwards, Tuck, who is a father and divorcee, sees an ad for an online dating site, and he decides to sign up for it, since he hasn't dated much since his divorce. Lauren (Reese Witherspoon, Water for Elephants) has a friend who has sneakily signed her up for the site as well. Lauren is about to bail on the site, but then she sees Tuck's profile, and they decide to meet.

After her date with Tuck, Lauren wanders into a nearby video store around the corner and meets FDR, who is instantly attracted to Lauren but unaware she's the girl Tuck just met for dinner. Lauren initially rebuffs FDR's advances, but once he shows up at a grill demonstration she is hosting for her job, she finally agrees to go out with him. The result of all this is that Lauren finds herself dating two guys at the same time, both of whom she really likes, but she must eventually choose only one to be her boyfriend. What Lauren doesn't know is that while she is trying to decide who to choose, both FDR and Tuck have CIA teams devoted to tracking her every move and learning about her personality.

Maybe see this movie. Reese, Chris Pine, and Tom Hardy are as charming as ever in this film, and ladies will most likely want to see This Means War just for the eye candy. What's funny about the movie is that the middle third of it has a lot of hilarious scenes in it; however, the first and the last third are just kind of "blah," and didn't make me laugh as much. I enjoyed the CIA/spy scenes more than the relationship ones, which probably isn't a good sign, but it was pretty funny how both Pine and Hardy's characters had entire CIA teams devoted to tracking Lauren and finding out her likes, dislikes, interests, and other parts of her personality. Chelsea Handler, too, has a supporting part as one of Lauren's friends, who blithely tells her to date both guys - just so she can live vicariously through Lauren, since her character is married. This Means War is the type of movie that you probably won't remember the day after you see it, but it's good "popcorn fare" and guys will like the spy scenes just as much as women will like the relationship parts of the film.

This Means War is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 100 minutes. 3 stars out of 5.
