Strategies to advance the nursing competency should be created in order to address the health problems. Creating curriculum or program, which is specific in order to improve the nurse competency is one of the solutions can be done to address the nursing and health issues in Indonesia. Regarding the current clinical teaching practice in most part of Indonesia, there are some suggestion could be considered.

Curriculum design and assessment methods

The understanding of the curriculum design and assessment method is the basic foundation of the lecturer and the clinical instructor to perform the task effectively. From the course we can reflect what the weakness of the current nursing education practice in Indonesia should be improved and what the good thing would be maintained. There are suggestion could be considered.

-         Mapping of the competency of the entire subject in the overall curriculum should be conducted involving all the expert in all area of expertise. So, overlap of the competency, skills and knowledge can be minimized. Furthermore, specificity of the content of the subjects will be better to see the inter subject alignment and give more advantages to the graduates.

-         Readjusting the assessment method in class and clinical practice in the current practice will give more beneficial for the students learning. Overload assessment will give the chance to the student to focus only in finishing the assessment in anxious situation and limited time. In that situation, deep learning approaches can not be maximized. Furthermore, in the clinical practice, students have too many paper works that distract the students in enjoying the real clinical practice atmosphere to prepare them perform as a real professional nurse.

-         Assignment should be focused on giving feedback on what students have been studied rather than giving mark. Final product or services of subjects should be created in order to measure the goal of the subject and the students understanding. However, controlling the students' engagement in the process is very challenging when the final assignment will be the biggest assessment criteria.



Didactical methods

Didactical method that we learn, seem as services for the student in facing the independent study climate. As the learning is an individual process, students may have problem in their study. Didactical methods prepare the students in dealing many problematic situations during study and prevent them from fail in the subject being studied. The methods also give benefit to the students to share their experience in solving the problem. Therefore, it is very important soft skill for the students after their graduated as a professional. The implications could be thought.

-         Didactical method can be use to improve the role of the academic advisor in fostering the student potential.

-         The role of academic advisor should be sifted from giving more direct suggestion or answer to exploring others students experiences to solve appear or potential problem. Student should have awareness on the current situation and potential problems.

-         Sharing experience in the student group will have an impact on their cohesiveness and improving collegiality.

-         Scheduled program should be created to meet the students depend on the general condition of the group. For example the first year students have more potential problem than third students. So, the group of first year students should have more time to see the academic advisor to prevent from problem and advent their potential. This program also suitable for professional stage students.



Coaching and instructor skill

Coaching is very important aspect to understand individual student's potential. This is very important in giving the feedback of the student plan of action especially in professional stage. Instructor skill and experience during the laboratory sessions have some similarities in Indonesia. However, clinical situation and working culture in the hospital introduced more exiting experience. The benefit can be implement is listed below.

-         Improving the skill of the clinical instructor and ratio in conducting effective clinical teaching in clinical field. The clinical instructor, for example in University Medic Centrum of Groningen, one of the clinical fields of School of Nursing Hanze University Groningen has the same level of understanding of the skill as a clinical instructor and as a clinician. Additionally, as the number of RN is sufficient, every student attached with one RN. The RN who has responsibility to be clinical instructor has special certificate representing their capability from the hospital.

-         Specific approaches for every field has should be considered when making the method of clinical teaching. Routine task of nurses in every specific area is different as the client condition and the situation is not the same.  This condition also affecting the number of the clinical instructor needed and the ratio between students and clinical instructor. Furthermore, to improve the client satisfaction, improving chance of the student to learn more, minimizing the risk of adverse event in the clinic, limitation of the student in one room is urgent to be discussed.

-         Improving the plan of action for the students before entering the clinical to give more personal awareness and preference to improve students' readiness to practice. According the student plan of action, assignment and assessment can be adjusted with the policy of the faculty and the clinical instructor.

-         Improving the instrument of the clinical target and assessment for the current clinical practice is needed. The daily activities of the clinical instructor is demonstrating the procedure, giving meaning of the activities and giving feedback on student's performance while they are performing the role of clinician. Discussion with the students is done during reading the previous report, in the break time or while they are performing nursing activities together. Routine feedback is based on the student plan of action. After the feedback session, the student has to make critical review report about the feedback and make a plan to improve the performance. The critical review and plan will be discussed in the practice or in the next feedback session.

-         Reducing the number of rotation. If students is rarely rotated to the other ward or unit, it allows the student to know the ward routines and confident to learn more.  The target should be focused on the nursing competency, not for the number of cased or disease should be experienced by the students.



Creating better climate for learn will give the teacher learn how teach and reflect their own practice. Sensitivity in sensing the current practice will boost the inert power to reach the highest level of personal ultimate as a nurse educator. Diligently monitor your cash flow: Forecast your cash flow monthly to ensure that expenses and planned expenditures are in line with accounts receivable. Include cash flow statements into your monthly financial reporting. Project cash requirements three-to- six months in advance. The key is to know how to monitor, protect, control, and put cash to work. 2. Carefully convert your inventories: Convert excess, obsolete, and slow-moving inventory items into cash. Consider returning excess and slow-moving items back to the suppliers. Close-out or inventory reduction sales work well to resize your inventory. Also, consider narrowing your product offerings. Well-timed order placement helps to reduce excess inventory levels and occasional material shortages. The key is to reduce the amount of your inventory without losing sales. 3. Timely collection of your accounts receivable: This asset should be converted to cash as quickly as possible. Offer prompt payment discounts to encourage timely payments. Make changes in the terms of sale for slow paying customers (i.e. changing net 30 day terms to COD). Invoicing is an important part of your cash flow management. The first rule of invoicing is to do it as soon as possible after products are shipped and/or after services are delivered. Place an emphasis on reducing billing errors. Most customers delay payments because an invoice had errors, and therefore, will not pay until they receive a corrected copy. Email or fax your invoices to save on mailing time. Post the payments that you have received and make deposits more frequently. The key is to develop an efficient collection system that generates timely payments and one that gives you advance warning of problems. 4. Re-focus your attention on your existing clients/customers: Make customer satisfaction your priority. A regular review of your customers' buying history and frequency of purchases can reveal some interesting facts about your customers' buying habits. Consider signing long-term contracts with your core clients/customers which will add to your security. Offer a discount for upfront cash payments. The key is to do what it takes to keep your current customers loyal. 5. Re-negotiate with your suppliers, lenders, and landlord: i) Suppliers: Always keep your negotiations on the level of need, saying that your company has reviewed its cost structure and has determined that it needs to lower supplier costs. . Tell the supplier that you value the relationship you have developed, but that you need to receive a cost reduction immediately. Ask your supplier for a lower material price, a longer payment cycle, and the elimination of finance charges. Also, see if you can buy material from them on a consignment basis. In return for their price concessions, be willing to agree to a long-term contract. Explore the idea of bartering as a form of payment. ii) Lenders: Everything in business finance is negotiable and your relationship with a bank is no exception. The first step to successful renegotiations is to convince your lenders that you can ultimately pay off the renegotiated loan. You must point out to your lenders why it would be in their best interest to agree to a new arrangement. Showing them your business plan and your action plan that includes your cost-savings initiatives, along with "the how" and "the when" of the implementation of your plan is the best way to achieve this goal. Explain to them that you will need their cooperation to insure that you can survive, as well as, grow your business during the economic downturn. Negotiated items include: the rate of interest, the required security to cover the loan, and the beginning date for repayment. A beginning date for repayment could be immediate, within several months or as long as a year. The key is to realize that your lender will work with you, but that frequent and continual communications with them is critical. iii) Landlord: Meet with your landlord. Explain your need to have them extend the term of your lease at a reduced cost. Make sure you have a clause in the lease agreement that entitles you to have the right to sublet any or all of the leased space. 6. Re-evaluate your staffing requirements: This is a very critical area. Salaries/wages are a major expense of doing business. Therefore, any reduction in the hours worked through work schedule changes, short-term layoffs or permanent layoffs has an immediate cost saving benefit. Most companies ramped up hiring new employees in the good times, only to find that they are currently overstaffed due to slow sales during the economic downturn. In terms of down-sizing your staff, be very careful not to reduce your staff to a level that forces you to skimp on customer service and quality. Consider the use of part-timers or the current trend of outsourcing certain functions to independent contractors. 7. Shop for better insurances rates: Get quotations from other insurance agents for comparable coverage to determine whether or not your present insurance carrier is competitive. Also, consider revising your coverage to reduce premium costs. The key is to have the right balance-to be adequately insured, but not under or over insured. 8. Re-evaluate your advertising: Contrary to the other cost-cutting initiatives, evaluate the possibility of increasing your advertising expenditures. This tactic realizes the advantage of the reduced "noise" and congestion (fewer advertisers) in the marketplace. The downturn period a great opportunity to increase brand awareness and create additional demand for your product/service offerings. 9. Seek the help of outside advisors: The use of an advisory board comprised of your CPA, attorney, and business consultant offers you objectivity and provides you with professional advice and guidance. Their collective experience in working with similar situations in past economic downturns is invaluable. 10. Review your other expenses: Target an across-the-board cost-cutting initiative of 10-15%. Attempt to eliminate unnecessary expenses. Tightening your belt in order to weather the downturn makes practical, financial sense. Proactively managing your business through an economic downturn is an enormous challenge and is critical for your survival. However, through well-planned initiatives, an economic downturn can create tremendous opportunity for your company to gain greater market share. People have differing opinions as to what acne really is. So, what exactly is acne? Do a couple of occasional but recurring zits qualify as a case of acne or do you have to have a lot of zits?

Believe it or not, the answer is that occasional pimples or zits do not constitute a true case of acne. Although zits do seem to have the ability to appear almost instantaneously and at the most inopportune times like picture day, prom night, spelling bees, sporting events, dates, and special award ceremonies, they are not a true acne outbreak.

The dictionary defines acne as "an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, characterized by comedones and pimples, especially on the face, back, chest, and, in severe cases, by cysts and nodules resulting in scarring."

The anatomical definition of sebaceous glands is: "small subcutaneous glands usually connected with hair follicles. The follicles secrete an oily semi-fluid matter, composed in great part of fat, which softens and lubricates the hair and skin."

Real acne outbreaks are actually a disease of the skin. However, the great news is that acne is treatable. Although it can be very embarrassing, cause great emotional distress, and lower your personal self-esteem for a period of time, acne is not fatal.

There are new and effective treatments being sought by researchers and great advances have been made in the treatment of acne in the last few years. Years ago, when a person had acne, they were pretty much stuck with the problem. There were very few treatments available and the medical profession didn't even consider acne a disease.

It was long thought that acne was the direct result of a diet that was too high in fat and/or sweets. That is no longer the case. Acne is most often associated with puberty and the onset of pre-teen and teenage years but it can and does develop in adults as well. When acne does finally heal, there can be permanent scars left (from picking and popping) that are unsightly and cause patients to suffer long term emotional distress and low self- esteem.

New and very effective skin resurfacing treatments have been developed over the last several years that have, if not completely removed acne scars, at least diminished their appearance and severity.

Acne Fact or Fiction:

You can hear a lot of tall tales about acne today, so let's take a look at the fact or fiction of acne. It is always better to be well armed with factual information so that you don't get fooled by the fictional facts that surround acne.

Fictional Fact #1: Acne is caused by a lack of sexual activity.

Factual Fact: Acne and sexual activity are two entirely separate issues. One has no bearing on the other. Hormones secreted during puberty and young adulthood does have a bearing on acne. They also have a bearing on sexual arousal and activity. However, acne has no bearing on sexual activity nor does sexual activity have any bearing on acne.

Fictional Fact #2: People have acne because they are dirty.

Factual Fact: Dirt has no part in acne. Dirt is dirt. Acne is acne. One has nothing to do with the other. Acne is a build up of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Dirt isn't involved. Keeping the face clean can and will help to prevent clogged pores but dirt does not cause acne.

Fictional Fact #3: Dermatologists can cure acne.

Factual Fact: Dermatologists can TREAT acne. They can help to alleviate the symptoms and help to clear up the pimples, black-heads, and white heads. They can prescribe antibiotics and topical ointments, lotions, and creams that will help but there is no cure at this time for acne.

Fictional Fact #4: Acne is simply a skin problem.

Factual Fact: It's true that acne affects the skin but it can also affect the way a person sees himself or herself. Acne and the scarring it can leave behind may cause a sufferer to become depressed and develop low self-esteem, both of which can lead to larger and more complex life socialization problems. Acne sufferers need the loving support and reassurance from their family and friends.

Acne and Stress:

Can stress actually cause acne? There is ample evidence available to suggest that stress can most assuredly cause an acne breakout or make an existing breakout worse. Our bodies are highly developed chemical laboratories that produce all sorts of stuff.

At puberty, our body begins to produce an abundance of male hormones and this happens in both boys and girls. This overproduction of male hormones can happen at other times in life besides puberty; for example, when a girl or woman starting or stops taking birth control pills.

These male hormones cause the bodies sebaceous glands to shift into overdrive and begin producing sebum. The sebum then travels up hair follicles, clogs the pores and begins the acne development cycle. However, male hormones are not the only cause for the sebaceous glands to begin producing an overabundance of sebum. When we become extremely stressed or overly emotional, our bodies react by causing the adrenal glands to produce a substance known as Cortisol, which is released directly into the bloodstream. Then the chemical chain reaction continues as the sebaceous glands release sebum, the sebum travels up the same hair follicles, clogs the pores and acne develops.

The physical changes in the body can cause exactly the same chemical chain reaction as the emotional changes in the mind. The mind/body connection is very real. Maybe some of it really IS in your head. If that's the case, there is help available to help people deal with the acne that is caused by stress. Reducing stress will just naturally reduce sebum production by the sebaceous glands and reducing sebum production will help to alleviate an acne breakout. Therefore, when you learn to reduce and control you stress levels, this part of the chemical chain reaction is minimized.

It really it isn't any different than restoring a hormonal balance to your body that reduces sebum production. So, in the final analysis, both factors that cause excessive sebum production should be addressed. Solving one problem might help; however, solving both problems could eliminate acne altogether.

Acne Facials:

If you are part of the 95 of the population who suffer from acne, you have more than likely seen TV or print media advertisements for acne facials. Have you ever wondered if there is anything to the claims that their manufacturers make?

In general, the answer is yes! Most acne facials are very effective, pretty much worth the price, and can be used in conjunction with your usual acne fighting regime. They won't necessarily replace any part of what you are already doing; but, rather enhance the overall effects.

You can find acne facials in most health stores, at many cosmetic counters, and online. As a matter of fact, you can probably complete a better comparison of available products online than you can anywhere else.

Most of these acne facial products provide for a three-step program. The first step is a complete facial cleansing. The next step is a steam massage. The final step is a facial mask. The first two steps are designed to prepare the face. The steam massage softens the black heads and the white heads to remove toxins from your skin. The facial mask serves to remove the dead skin cells from the face and to moisturize it as well. The overall effect of the acne facial is a very relaxing, calming, and cleansing experience. It just plain feels good. Anything that helps to calm and sooth your stress can't be bad because we all know that acne is aggravated by high stress levels. Acne facial masks can be used in addition to other parts of your acne prevention and treatment regime or you may find that the facial can, in fact, actually replace some things that you are currently doing.

Acne Concealer's:

One of Newton's laws of physics laws says that, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." That law of physics spills over into a lot of our life situations. For example: A young woman gets a zit and wants to cover it up. The cosmetics industry has a multitude of products designed to do just that. Okay, that's a little far out there but you get my point.

The acne pimples, whether they are white heads or black heads should never be picked at or popped. If they are popped or picked, it can and normally does result is a scar that is much harder to get rid of than the actual pimple, black head or white head. Popping a pimple is not going to make it go away. In fact, popping a pimple is only going to make the acne worse.

Still when you get a zit, you have to go out and face the world so you are looking for ways to make your skin look clear. You want to disguise the zit and make it as unnoticeable as possible. Here is where the cosmetic industry can help. There are a multitude of products designed to make a zit less noticeable. You don't want to use a product that just adds to the problem by adding additional oil to already oily skin. So, you do need to remember, that when you use a cover product to make the zit less noticeable, you need to totally clean the product from your skin immediately when you return home.

Daun lidah buaya 1/2 batang dibuang durinya, dicuci bersih, lalu diparut. Tambahkan air masak ½ cangkir dan madu 2 sendok makan. Parutan lidah buaya diperas, disaring, lalu diminim 3 kali sehari

Saran       
Penderita tidak diperbolehkan meminum minuman keras, memakan makanan yang pedas –pedas atau makanan yang mengandung banyak lemak sebab lemak dapat mengendurkan bagiandalam kulit pada usus. Makanlah buah-buahan dan syur-sayuran segar. Sub-Saharan Africa is thought to be most blighted by the virus, but it poses a huge problem across much of the developing world, where the latest drugs to control infection are not always readily available.
What is it?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
The virus is transmitted from person to person through blood and some other bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk.
The virus attacks the person's natural defence against disease - the immune system - weakening it over time.
In particular, HIV attacks one type of immune cell, known as a CD4 lymphocyte.
A person who has been infected with HIV is said to be HIV positive.
They are likely to become more ill with time as their immune system fails and is less able to fight off other illnesses.
When their immune system has become very damaged or they become sick with a number of particularly severe illnesses, usually around 10 years after they first became infected with HIV, they are said to have AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
What are the symptoms?
Someone who is HIV positive may feel perfectly healthy and well and may not be aware that they have the virus.
Within a few weeks of infection with the virus, some may develop a flu-like illness or a rash or swollen glands.
A routine HIV test at this stage will not show that the person has the virus, however.
It is not until about three months after becoming infected that they will test HIV positive on an antibody test.
In the early disease, people who are HIV positive can develop illnesses that people with normal immune systems can also get, such as tuberculosis, malaria, blood poisoning and some skin infections.
However, individuals with HIV may take longer to recover.
With time - years if the person is otherwise healthy and well nourished - HIV weakens the immune system.
This makes people with HIV vulnerable to infections that healthy people would normally fight off easily.
These are called opportunistic infections and are caused by germs that are around us all the time. An example is thrush or candida.
Opportunistic infections can produce a wide range of symptoms, some of them severe.
Certain cancers can also develop and damage the skin, brain and nervous system.
Who is at risk?
Anyone who is exposed to the following can contract HIV:
Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person - this includes oral sex
Contact with infected blood - e.g. via a blood transfusion, injury
From mother to child - during pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding
Injecting drugs and sharing needles
A person cannot catch HIV from toilet seats, by hugging or by eating food prepared by someone who has HIV.
Globally, over 40 million people are living with HIV.
More than 25 million people have died of HIV/AIDS since 1981.
What is the outlook?
There is still no cure for HIV. However, the disease is no longer an imminent death sentence thanks to the major advances in HIV research and drug development over recent years.
With treatment, people with HIV can live for decades with the condition.
However, HIV medicines are not widely available in many poor countries around the world.
Millions of people are still dying prematurely from HIV/AIDS.
Of the 6.5 million people in developing and transitional countries who need life-saving AIDS drugs, only 1 million are receiving them.
How can it be treated?
The mainstay of treatment is with antiretroviral drugs. They will not cure HIV but can delay the onset of AIDS and help the person to remain healthy for longer.
There are four main groups of antiretroviral drugs. Each attacks HIV in a different way, but all work by stopping the virus from replicating:
Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors - these block an enzyme, called reverse transcriptase, which HIV uses to make a DNA copy of itself once it has entered a human cell
Nucleoside/Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors - these make sure the DNA copy is faulty
Protease Inhibitors - prevent the production of mature, infectious virus particles in infected human cells by blocking an enzyme called protease
Fusion or Entry Inhibitors - stop HIV from entering human cells where they would replicate
A combination of a few of these drugs is usually recommended and they are taken for the rest of the person¿s life.
This combination, called HAART or highly active antiretroviral therapy, has improved life expectancy significantly.
Although they are very effective, antiretroviral drugs can have unwanted side effects such as nausea.
Also, the treatment may stop working if the virus mutates in a way that makes it resistant to the drugs.
Some combinations of antiretroviral treatments can also reduce the chance that a person who has been exposed to HIV will become infected.
This is called post-exposure prophylaxis and the drugs must be taken immediately after a person has been exposed to HIV - within hours preferably.
It is also possible to treat and even prevent some of the opportunistic infections that occur alongside HIV/AIDS.
Other important aspects of care include prevention of onwards transmission of HIV to others (between sexual partners and from mother to child, for example), regular testing of CD4 count to check how far the disease has progressed and what HIV treatment is needed, plus palliative care during the end stages of the disease.
Scientists are working to find a vaccine against HIV, but as yet no effective vaccine is available.

The most obvious source is bird flu.
Humans have been catching if from birds for the last decade, but as yet it has still not kick-started a global outbreak.
What is bird flu?
Like humans and other species, birds are susceptible to flu.
There are many types of bird, or avian, flu.
The most contagious strains, which are usually fatal in birds, are H5 and H7.
There are nine different types of H5. The nine all take different forms - some are highly pathogenic, while some are pretty harmless.
The type currently causing concern is the "highly pathogenic" Asian strain of the H5N1 virus.
Scientists have discovered four different subtypes of H5N1, and there could well be more. However, all are deadly to birds, and can cause disease - and death - in humans.
However, it is important to stress that H5N1 is overwhelmingly a disease that affects birds - and not humans.
It is true that humans have been infected, but almost all have been poultry workers who have come into intimate contact with birds. H5N1 cannot pass easily from human to human.
Migratory wildfowl, notably wild ducks, are natural carriers of the viruses, but are unlikely to actually develop an infection.
The risk is that they pass it on to domestic birds, who are much more susceptible to the virus.
How do humans catch bird flu?
Bird flu was thought only to infect birds until the first human cases were seen in Hong Kong in 1997.
Humans catch the disease through close contact with live infected birds.
Birds excrete the virus in their faeces, which dry and become pulverised, and are then inhaled.
Symptoms are similar to other types of flu - fever, malaise, sore throats and coughs. People can also develop conjunctivitis.
Researchers are now concerned because scientists studying a case in Vietnam found the virus can affect all parts of the body, not just the lungs.
This could mean that many illnesses, and even deaths, thought to have been caused by something else, may have been due to the bird flu virus.
Is it possible to stop bird flu coming into a country?
There is no failsafe way of preventing its spread.
Experts say proper poultry controls - such as preventing wild birds getting in to poultry houses - are vital.
In addition, they say monitoring of the migratory patterns of wild birds should provide early alerts of the arrival of infected flocks - meaning they could be targeted on arrival.
How many people have been affected?
As of January 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) had confirmed 348 cases of H5N1 in humans in Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam, leading to 216 deaths.

How quickly is the disease spreading?
After bird flu claimed its first human victim - a three-year-old boy in Hong Kong in May 1997 - the disease was not detected again until February 2003, when a father and son were diagnosed with H5N1, again in Hong Kong.
Since then it has spread westwards through Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Despite mass culls, exclusion zones and other measures put in place to prevent its spread, the H5N1 virus has continued to travel.
In one week in February 2006, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, France, Slovenia, India, Iran and Egypt confirmed their first cases of H5N1 in wild birds.
In April 2005, a dead swan in Scotland was found to have the strain.
But it can't yet be passed from person to person?
For the most part, humans have contracted the virus following very close contact with sick birds.
There may have been examples of human-to-human transmission, but so far not in the form which could fuel a pandemic.
A case in Thailand indicated the probable transmission of the virus from a girl who had the disease to her mother, who also died.
The girl's aunt, who was also infected, survived the virus.
UK virology expert Professor John Oxford said these cases indicated the basic virus could be passed between humans, and predicted similar small clusters of cases would be seen again.
It is not the only instance where it has been thought bird flu has been passed between humans.
In 2004, two sisters died in Vietnam after possibly contracting bird flu from their brother who had died from an unidentified respiratory illness.
In a similar case in Hong Kong in 1997, a doctor possibly caught the disease from a patient with the H5N1 virus - but it was never conclusively proved.
What would the consequences of a mass outbreak be?
If the virus gained the ability to pass easily between humans the results could be catastrophic.
Worldwide, experts predict anything between two million and 50 million deaths.
However the mortality rate - which presently stands at around 50% of confirmed cases - could decline as it mutates, they say.
Is there a vaccine?
There is not yet a definitive vaccine, but prototypes which offer protection against the H5N1 strain are being produced.
But antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu which are already available and being stockpiled by countries such as the UK, may help limit symptoms and reduce the chances the disease will spread.
Concerns have been prompted by news that patients in Vietnam have become partially resistant to the Tamiflu, the drug that doctors plan to use to tackle a human bird flu outbreak.
Scientists say it may be helpful to have stocks of other drugs from the same family such as Relenza (zanamivir).
Can I continue to eat chicken?
Yes. Experts say avian flu is not a food-borne virus, so eating chicken is safe.
The only people thought to be at risk are those involved in the slaughter and preparation of meat that may be infected.
However, the Who recommends, to be absolutely safe all meat should be cooked to a temperature of at least 70C. Eggs should also be thoroughly cooked.
Professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University underlined the negligible risk to consumers: "The virus is carried in the chicken's gut.
"A person would have to dry out the chicken meat and would have to sniff the carcass to be at any risk. But even then, it would be very hard to become infected."
What is being done to contain the virus in the countries affected?
Steps have been taken to try to stop the disease spreading among birds.
Millions of farmyard birds have been culled, while millions more have been vaccinated and confined indoors.
Areas where the disease has been found have been isolated and some countries have banned imports of live birds and poultry products.
In January 2006 international donors pledged $1.9bn (£1.1bn) in the fight against bird flu, while the World Health Organization has devised a rapid-response plan to detect and contain a global flu pandemic.
There are also measures recommended when a wild infected bird is found, including protection and surveillance zones.
However, experts do not recommend culling wild birds. Not only would this be a logistical nightmare, it is unnecessary. It is better to adopt a "wait and see" policy and cull infected farmyard birds if the disease is spreading among these poultry.

An update to a major review by the Government-appointed Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) has highlighted the health risks associated with passive smoking.
The British Medical Association is among those who believe a ban would make a signficant contribution to public health.
However, opponents say it would be draconian and unnecesary.
BBC News Online examines the evidence.
What is passive smoking?
Simply, breathing in other people's tobacco smoke. This is made up of "sidestream" smoke from the burning tip of the cigarette, and "mainstream" smoke that has been inhaled and then exhaled by the smoker.
Sidestream smoke accounts for nearly 85% of the smoke in a room.
What's in the smoke?
Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals in the form of particles and gases.
The particulate phase includes tar, nicotine, benzene and benzo(a)pyrene.
The gas phase includes carbon monoxide, ammonia, dimethylnitrosamine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and acrolein.
It has been estimated that tobacco smoke contains as many as 60 substances which cause - or are suspected of causing - cancer.
And many irritate the tissues of the respiratory system.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA has classified environmental tobacco smoke as a class A carcinogen - ranking it alongside asbestos and arsenic.
What effect does it have on the passive smoker?
Breathing in other people's smoke can cause eye irritation, headache, cough, sore throat, dizziness and nausea. Just 30 minutes exposure can be enough to reduce blood flow through the heart.
There is also evidence to show that people with asthma can experience a significant decline in lung function when exposed.
Whether or not passive smoking can trigger new cases of asthma is a hotly debated issue.
What about in the longer term?
Non-smokers who are exposed to passive smoking in the home, have a 25% increased risk of heart disease and lung cancer.
Researchers from London's St George's Medical School and the Royal Free hospital have recently found when you include exposure to passive smoking in the workplace and public places the risk of coronary heart disease is increased by 50-60%.
A major review in 1998 by the Government-appointed Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) concluded that passive smoking is a cause of lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease in adult non-smokers, and a cause of respiratory disease, cot death, middle ear disease and asthmatic attacks in children.
There is also some evidence to suggest that passive smoking may affect children's mental development.
SCOTH has looked at the data since 1998 and concluded secondhand smoke is damaging.
However, it is true that the health risks of breathing in other people's tobacco smoke are much smaller than those posed by actually smoking.
And the pro-smoking lobby, including the campaigning group FOREST, argue that the case against passive smoking has never been properly proved.
They point to a study by the University of California published in the British Medical Journal which found that the link between environmental tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed.
This in turn, is disputed by the anti-smoking lobby, which points out that after considering the BMJ study, the UK Government's Committee on Carcinogens and SCOTH still concluded that environmental tobacco smoke is carcinogenic, and responsible for several hundred deaths a year in the UK.
How widespread is passive smoking?
Of course, anybody who regularly frequents pubs or bars is inevitably going to breathe in a significant amount of tobacco smoke.
However, a survey by the anti-smoking charity ASH in 1999 found that about 3million people in the UK are exposed to passive smoke at work.
And it is also estimated that almost half of all children in the UK are exposed to tobacco smoke at home.
One study found that in households where both parents smoke, young children have a 72% increased risk of respiratory illnesses.
Research also shows that children whose parents smoke in the home are more likely to be admitted to hospital for bronchitis and pneumonia in the first year of life.
More than 17,000 children under the age of five are admitted to hospital every year because of the effects of passive smoking.
What do other countries do?
Banning smoking in public places is a highly controversial move, which has been resisted by the UK government so far.
However, some countries, including Ireland, Turkey and Norway, have accepted that a ban is the only way to tackle the problem of smoking effectively.
Despite concerns from the hospitality industry, the ban on smoking in public places in Ireland, which began in March this year, has not affected business, according to reports.

It can strike at any age and the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness attached to it can make it difficult for people to carry out their normal activities.
It can be more or less severe and
symptoms are often varied, making it often hard to diagnose.
It is thought that some individuals may be more prone to depression, whether because of life experiences, their body chemistry or genetically inherited conditions.
Those who have suffered from depression include Sir Winston Churchill and Florence Nightingale.
What is depression?
Anyone can suffer from depression. The most common symptoms include:
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
Feeling useless, inadequate, bad
A sense of self hatred, constant questioning of thoughts and actions and a constant need for reassurance
Feeling vulnerable and being oversensitive to criticism
Sense of guilt
Loss of energy and the ability to concentrate and be motivated to do even the simplest tasks
Harming oneself
Sudden loss or gain in weight
Sleep disruption or a need to sleep very long hours
Agitation and restlessness
Loss of libido
Physical aches and pains
Most people only suffer two or three of these symptoms at any one time.
People with severe depression may also experience suicidal feelings, stop eating or drinking and suffer from delusions or hallucinations.
Many people who need treatment for depression suffer further bouts later in life.
Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression, but three times as many men commit suicide.
Experts say this could be because women are more likely to admit to depression because of the stigma attached to mental illness.  
Different types of depression
There are many different types of depression, including clinically diagnosed depression, manic depression and post-natal depression.
Manic depression is marked by extreme mood swings, between highs when a person experiences excessive energy and optimism and lows when they may feel total despair and lack of energy.
It is often treated with lithium or, in extreme cases, electro-convulsive therapy.
Post-natal depression can occur from about two weeks after the birth of a child to two years after and differs from the mood swings suffered by many in the first few days after the child is born.
Other forms of depression include Seasonal Affective Disorder which is thought to be associated with the approach of winter and may be linked to lack of sunlight.
Causes of depression
Depression can be caused by a combination of factors.
It often runs in families, suggesting a genetic component, but it may be triggered by stressful events.
Major depressive illness is usually linked to some form of chemical imbalance in the brain.
It is also thought that people with low self-esteem, a pessimistic outloook on life and difficulty coping with stress are more prone to depression.
Life events which may trigger depression include bereavement, chronic illness, relationship problems and financial difficulties.
Treatment
In recent years, the market has been saturated by a range of new drugs called anti-depressants.
These include Prozac which is thought to stimulate the growth of brain cells in an area of the brain called the dentate gyrus.
Other types of drugs may also be used to treat depression.
Many positive claims have been made for anti-depressants, but some patients experience bad side effects.
Other ways of treating depression include psychotherapy, which aims to uncover the reasons for depression and help the patient to find ways of overcoming them.
Self help groups may also offer people a forum for talking about their condition and sharing it with others so that they do not feel isolated and alone.
In extreme cases, a person with depression may need to be treated in hospital, for example, if they are threatening or have attempted to commit suicide.
If the person is deemed a risk to himself or others, he may have to be committed to hospital.
Besides psychotherapy and a course of anti-psychotic drugs, people in hospital may be offered or forced to undergo electro-convulsive therapy.
This involves applying electric currents to the brain. The treatment is controversial, but safety procedures have been improved in recent years.
Some psychiatrists are against its use, particularly without the patient's consent, but others believe it can be effective in dealing with life-threatening depression.

It kills millions of people around the world each year, and concern is growing that the bacteria which causes the disease are increasingly growing resistant to current drugs.
What is tuberculosis?
TB is an infection caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
Any part of the body can be affected, but in most cases the lungs are affected first.
It is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, producing tiny bacteria-infested water droplets which are easily breathed in by others in the vicinity.
What happens when you are infected?
In most cases healthy people who breathe in the bacteria do not develop active TB. Instead, the bacteria are killed or neutralised by their immune system. At most they will experience mild, short-lived symptoms.
In about one in 20 cases - usually when the person infected is not in good health - the immune system fails to tackle the bacteria, which multiply and spread to other parts of the lung and body.
There is a third scenario. In some cases the immune system fails to kill all the bacteria, which can trigger active disease months or even years after the first infection.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms tend to start with a dry irritating cough, which continues for months, and gets progressively worse.
Over time, patients start to cough up a lot of phlegm, which may contain traces of blood.
Other symptoms include: fever, sweats, feeling unwell, weight loss, pains in the chest, and poor appetite.
Left untreated, damage occurs to the lungs, leading to breathlessness.
Eventually, the infection may spread to other parts of the body.
If left untreated, about half of people with active TB eventually die of the infection.
How common is tuberculosis?
TB has been killing people for thousands of years. Tissue samples from Egyptian mummies over 4,000 years old show signs of being infected with the disease.
Some estimate that TB was responsible for around 20% of all deaths in England and Wales in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th and 20th centuries there has been a steady decline in deaths from the disease in industrialised countries. This was given a boost by the development of penicillin and other antibiotics in he last 50 years.
But the decline began to level out in he 1980s and since then the incidence of the disease has started to increase again.
In the developing world TB has remained common. It causes more deaths world-wide than any other infectious disease - about three million a year.
Spread of the disease in the developing world has been blamed on poor nutrition, poor housing and poor general health. In particular, many people infected with HIV are also vulnerable to TB.
How is TB diagnosed?
A skin prick test can give an indication of infection.
However, a definitive diagnosis usually involves growing a sputum sample in the lab over six to eight weeks.
Newer, speedier tests are currently in development.
What is the treatment?
You need to take a combination of special antibiotics, including isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and often ethambutol, over a six month period.
Doctors stress that it is important to complete the course, even if you feel better.
Failure do so has been blamed for the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, which threatens to undermine the effectiveness of current treatments.
With treatment, most people make a full recovery.
Can TB be prevented?
Yes. The BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) vaccine, which contains a small number of modified TB bacteria, is thought to be more than 70% effective at preventing the disease.
In the UK it is offered to vulnerable groups.

Gonorrhoea:
Gonorrhoea is a serious illness caused by an organism called Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
It has an incubation period of only a few days.
Males experience a discharge from the urethra - the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out through the penis - causing painful urination, while females suffer infection of the urethra and cervix.
Women who are infected have a long term risk of serious complications, such as infertility or ectopic pregnancy.
However, it is possible to be infected with gonorrhoea without showing any obvious symptoms.
Women are particularly vulnerable to this asymptomatic form of the disease.
The condition can be treated with antibiotics. However, it is becoming resistant to some drugs.
Chlamydia:
Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis.
Much chlamydial infection goes undiagnosed, because the infection is often without symptoms.
However, it can cause vaginal bleeding and discharge, abdominal pain, fever and inflammation of the cervix in women.
And in men, it can cause a watery or milky discharge from the penis, swollen or tender testicles and a burning feeling while urinating.
The long term complications can be severe, especially for women where it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
Between 20% and 50% of children born to women with chlamydia will be infected.
Chlamydia is the leading cause of neonatal conjunctivitis ¿ an eye infection in babies that can cause blindness.
However, it is easy to treat with antibiotics.
Genital Warts:
Genital warts (also known as venereal warts) are caused by a virus, the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Warts are found on or around the penis, anus or vagina.
They are small lumps which have an irregular cauliflower-like surface.
The colour and shape vary depending on their location. Sometimes the warts cause irritation and itching.
Genital warts are a serious health concern as certain types of HPV have been associated with cervical cancer.
However, most women infected with genital warts do not have the strains of HPV that give rise to cervical cancer.
Genital warts often disappear even without treatment. However, there are a range of drug treatments.
Small warts can also be removed by freezing, burning or using laser treatment.
Occasionally, surgery is used to remove larger warts.
Syphilis:
Syphilis is caused by the bacteria T. pallidum.
The incubation period is from a few days to three months.
The symptoms of syphilis are less specific. Though the illness usually begins with one or more painless but highly infectious sores appearing anywhere on the body (but usually at the site of infection) this is not always the case.
These sores clear up on their own in two to six weeks.
Later symptoms are highly variable and anyone who thinks they are at risk from unsafe sex by them or their partner should seek screening and treatment at an GUM clinic.
The infection can be cured by antibiotics. However, if the disease is left untreated, it can eventually affect the brain or heart, and lead to death.
The condition is especially significant in women in pregnancy where infection can cause miscarriage, still birth, or a damaged baby.
Genital herpes:
A common infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 or type 1.
Type 1 is commonly acquired through oral sex, while type 2 is transmitted through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms include small blisters in the genital area which rapidly break down to leave painful ulcers.
Other symptoms include pain or difficulty in passing urine. Some patients may develop headache and fever.
Herpes infection during late pregnancy is potentially dangerous to the baby during labour.
Herpes is a life-long chronic condition which cannot be cured.
However, there are antiviral drugs available which can reduce the severity of symptoms.

Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterised by recurrent breathing problems. People with the disease suffer "attacks", or acute episodes, when the air passages in their lungs narrow and breathing becomes difficult.
Attacks are caused by the airways over-reacting to certain environmental factors. They then become inflamed and clogged.
They are described as feeling similar to taking deep breaths of very cold air in winter. Breathing becomes harder and may hurt, and there may be coughing. The air may make a wheezing or whistling sound.
What causes it?
A definitive cause for the lung abnormality at the root of asthma has so far eluded doctors.
However, Professor Duncan Geddes of the National Asthma Campaign says there are plenty of reasons why prevalence of the disease is increasing.
"There are simple ones - women who smoke during pregnancy are much more likely to have asthmatic children.
"It's also something to do with the way we're living in modern housing - little ventilation, damp housing, more carpets and more dust make asthma more common."
Exposure to illness in childhood could also play a role, he says.
"There are some curious things like the pattern of early childhood infections. It may be that in the past when all children had a lot of viral infections their bodies were defending themselves against infection.
"Now with fewer of them, their bodies are turning over to asthma instead."
Some scientists have linked the increase in asthma with an increase in air pollution. However, this theory is hotly disputed.
The most likely culprit are PM10s, microscopically small particles given off by diesel engines, coal burning, mining, construction and quarrying.
These particles can penetrate deep into the lung and are known to worsen existing heart or respiratory problems.
What triggers an asthma attack?
There are plenty of known triggers for asthma attacks. They include:
Allergens (substances to which some people are allergic) such as pollens, foods, dust, mould, feathers, or animal dander (small scales from animal hair or feathers);
Irritants in the air such as dirt, cigarette smoke, gases, and odours;
Respiratory infections such as colds, flu, sore throats, and bronchitis;
Too much exertion such as running upstairs too fast or carrying heavy loads (although people with asthma can benefit from a moderate amount of exercise);
Emotional stress such as excessive fear or excitement;
Weather such as very cold air, windy weather, or sudden changes in weather;
Medication such as aspirin or related drugs and some drugs used to treat glaucoma and high blood pressure. Each person with asthma reacts to a different set of triggers. Identifying which triggers apply is important if asthma attacks are to be prevented.

It is most often a temporary condition and covers only a part of a person's experience, such as immediate memory. The causes of amnesia range from psychological trauma to brain damage caused by a blow to the head or conditions such as a brain tumour, a stroke or swelling of the brain. There are many definitions covering the different types of amnesia.
What is amnesia?
The main types of amnesia are:
Anterograde amnesia: People who find it hard to remember ongoing events after suffering damage to the head. They do not tend to forget their childhood or who they are, but have trouble remembering day-to-day events.
Retrograde amnesia: People who find it hard to retrieve memories prior to an incident in which they suffer damage to the head. Sometimes people never remember the seconds leading up to the incident.
Korsakoff's psychosis: Memory loss caused by alcohol abuse. The person's short-term memory may be normal, but they will have severe problems recalling a simple story, lists of unrelated words, faces and complex patterns.
This tends to be a progressive disorder and is usually accompanied by neurological problems, such as uncoordinated movements and loss of feeling in the fingers and toes. If these symptoms occur, it may be too late to stop drinking.
Traumatic amnesia: This follows brain damage caused by a severe non-penetrative blow to the head, such as in a road accident. It can lead to anything from a loss of consciousness for a few seconds to coma.
Infantile/childhood amnesia: This refers to a person's inability to recall events from early childhood. There are many theories on this, for example, Freud put it down to sexual repression. Others say it could be linked to language development or the fact that some areas of the brain linked to memory are not fully mature.
Hysterical amnesia (also known as fugue amnesia): This covers episodes of amnesia linked to psychological trauma. It is usually temporary and can be triggered by a traumatic event with which the mind finds it difficult to deal. Usually, the memory slowly or suddenly comes back a few days later, although memory of the trauma may remain incomplete.
Treatment varies according to the type of amnesia and the suspected cause.
Anyone suffering any symptoms of amnesia should seek medical attention.
