I have decided to reduce the number of feeds. The only feeds that will continue in the immediate future will be: Today's Events at UT, Planning Ahead, Live Music in the Clubs, and Restaurant - Events, News and Reviews.

Sorry to say, some of you won't be getting news in your current feeds. I hope that you will take a look at the others and give them a try.

"Local Bureaucracy, Universal Power: The Political Construction of Scale in Revolutionary Paris, 1789-1815," will be presented by Dr. Stephen Sawyer, assistant professor of history and chair of the Department of History, American University of Paris. Sawyer specializes in urban political history with an emphasis on the role of cities in territorial and state construction in the Atlantic world. He has published in Annales: Histoire et Sciences Sociales as well as chapters in several books. He is currently preparing a book manuscript for publication on the history of the Paris Municipality from 1789 to 1880.

Lebanese-American writer and painter Rabih Alameddine presents "The Hakawati: Middle Eastern/Non-Middle-Eastern and Western/Non-Western Storytelling: A Reading/Discussion." Alameddine reads from his novel "The Hakawati" ("The Storyteller") and follows with a discussion about modes of storytelling in the Arab world and the Western world, asking whether in the age of Tom Cruise, Jet Li and Shakira there can be anything resembling an authentic form of local storytelling.

Musical Theatre

We are very pleased to announce that McCallum Musical Theatre has been selected to perform at the state capitol on March 7, 2011 at Arts Education Days at the Capitol. McCallum Musical Theatre was selected from all of the outstanding groups that auditioned to represent all of the fine arts programs in Texas. Director Molly Wissinger is programming contemporary and classic musical theatre selections to be performed in the capitol rotunda and also on the south steps of the capitol. McCallum Musical Theatre has the distinction of being the only musical theatre group in the state that was selected to sing. A student-led McCallum Orchestra string quartet will accompany the group.

Get Ready to Go Fly a Kite! Hello all you anticipatory kite flyers! Only 4 more days till the 84th Kite Day in Austin! Time to start watching this space closely for news on how to make your first Sunday in March at Zilker the best ever. The Exchange Club of Austin wants to make sure all our wonderful sponsors are recognized first, though. We can’t fly Kites on Sunday, March 4th without them! Big thanks go out to The Austin Diagnostic Clinic, who is sponsoring the Kite Clinic this year. If your your kite breaks, don’t panic, come on by the Kite Clinic next to the Kite Contest field and Dr. Don and his volunteers from Austin Diagnostic Clinic will help you fix that kite right up and get flying again. Thank you to our friends at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld for sponsoring the free Water Stations this year. If you need to wet your whistle, just drop on by the Event Solutions water stations at Rock Island or down by the volleyball courts to fill your water bottle up for free. Didn’t bring your own bottle?…no worries, we’ll sell you a souvenir water bottle and you can quench your thirst and donate to local children’s charities all at the same time. Don’t have a kite? Come over to the H-E-B Kite Making Tent on the southeast side of the Kite Contest field and make one for free. Our good friends at H-E-B have graciously donated their time, money, tent, and volunteers to make this important part of the Festival happen year after year. Thank’s H-E-B! Want to try to win a kite? Come over to the Whole Earth Provisions Co. display on the west side of the field to enter the raffle for a kite and more. You know the annual free day of yoga (the one where I took my mom to Bikram and she hasn’t stopped going since and it’s been like 5 years?). Well the city of Austin is having “Another Free Day of Yoga” this Saturday!

“Another Free Day of Yoga is an opportunity for people who are new to yoga to try a classand for existing students to try a different style of yoga,” explains Christina Simon, Director of Center Operations at Yoga Yoga. “Every year on Labor Day, Yoga Yoga participates in theannual Free Day of Yoga citywide-event, and we see over 1,000 people in our studios. With interest in yoga on the rise, we saw the need to make this a semiannual occasion, giving more people access to the benefits of yoga.”

At five Yoga Yoga locations across the city, 56 free yoga classes will be taught, from beginner-friendly yoga classes to prenatal yoga classes to a yoga bootcamp class at 7:30am! Class schedule and Yoga Yoga location information at yogayoga.com/another-free-day-yoga.
