How can you help someone who doesn’t want to be helped? Should you even try? If motivation is considered not only as an intrinsic attribute of the offender, but dependent upon a range of factors including what obstacles there are, what sort of changes are needed and the kind of intervention on offer, steps can be taken to improve the situation.
Mary McMurran has skilfully brought together eminent researchers and practitioners, who provide the reader with best knowledge and practice from two major fields-addictions and criminological psychology-to examine the therapeutic process and suggest how best to engage offenders in therapy. Throughout, ethical issues surrounding motivating offenders to change are closely scrutinised.
This book is an invaluable resource and guide to those training and working with offenders and training staff, including clinical and prison psychologists, probation officers, forensic psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists , counsellors, and prison officers.
“Scholars and practitioners who despair because ‘the people who are most in need of treatment are the most difficult to engage’ will feel optimistic and reinvigorated after reading this book. Motivating Offenders to Change provides the most valuable and comprehensive information available anywhere about how to encourage offenders to attend sessions and to comply with and benefit from treatment.” David P. Farrington, Professor of Psychological Criminology at Cambridge University, UK
“This excellent book is a must-read for all who are involved in the criminal justice system. It challenges the idea that confrontation with offenders is necessary and demonstrates that effective treatment results from building effective relationships with these clients. McMurran’s book is a groundbreaking synthesis of what is known from various fields about motivating offenders.” William L. Marshall, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada

Lie detection, offender profiling, jury selection, insanity in the law, predicting the risk of re-offending , the minds of serial killers, and many other topics that fill news and fiction are all aspects of the rapidly developing area of scientific psychology broadly known as Forensic Psychology. This fascinating Very Short Introduction discusses all the aspects of psychology that are relevant to the legal and criminal process as a whole. It includes explanations of criminal behavior and criminality, including the role of mental disorder in crime, and it reveals how forensic psychology contributes to helping investigate the crime and catching the perpetrators. David Canter also explains how psychologists provide guidance to all those involved in civil and criminal court proceedings, including both the police and the accused, and what expert testimony can be provided by a psychologist about the offender at the trial. Finally, Canter describes how forensic psychology is used, particularly in prisons, to help in the management, treatment and rehabilitation of offenders, once they have been convicted.

During the seventeenth century, England was beset by three epidemics of the bubonic plague, each outbreak claiming between a quarter and a third of the population of London and other urban centers. Surveying a wide range of responses to these epidemics—sermons, medical tracts, pious exhortations, satirical pamphlets, and political commentary—Plague Writing in Early Modern England brings to life the many and complex ways Londoners made sense of such unspeakable devastation.
Ernest B. Gilman argues that the plague writing of the period attempted unsuccessfully to rationalize the catastrophic and that its failure to account for the plague as an instrument of divine justice fundamentally threatened the core of Christian belief. Gilman also trains his critical eye on the works of Jonson, Donne, Pepys, and Defoe, which, he posits, can be more fully understood when put into the context of this century-long project to “write out” the plague. Ultimately, Plague Writing in Early Modern England is more than a compendium of artifacts of a bygone era; it holds up a distant mirror to reflect our own condition in the age of AIDS, super viruses, multidrug resistant tuberculosis, and the hovering threat of a global flu pandemic.

Serious child protection failures haunt health and welfare agencies around the world.
Based on interviews with protective workers and rigorous examination of their cases, this ground breaking book draws links between the traumatised and isolated child protection worker and the traumatised and isolated re-abused child. This book judiciously uses the words of the workers themselves to bring alive the stresses of life In the Firing Line. Case studies highlight the full extent of violence in many children’s lives. The authors propose that, in serious cases of abuse, new approaches and understandings are required if children are to be protected from repeated abuse, long-term psychological injury and even death.
* First book to clearly make the connection between violence against child protection workers and the impact on their ability to protect the child
* Tackles the very important, but often neglected, topic of the power balance between clients and social workers
* Presents a wealth of research findings and real-life examples from practice

Do you fret over the value of your investments on a daily basis? Do you buy stocks based on a “hunch” or a gut feeling? According to Zweig, the latest scientific evidence shows that this common behavior usually results in financial loss and is caused by the way our brain reacts when we think about money. According to recent research in the emerging science of “neuroeconomics,” the pleasure center in the brain that is stimulated in anticipation of “the big payout” is the same area that is affected during sex or drug use and is responsible for the addiction to gambling. Our brains, which evolved more than 200,000 years ago to react quickly to patterns and minute changes in our environment, are not equipped to handle the randomness of the stock market; but nevertheless we attempt to create meaningful patterns where there are none and base our investment decisions on erroneous assumptions. The good news is that awareness of this phenomenon can make us better investors, and Zweig offers some simple tips to avoid the pitfalls, such as taking the long view and avoiding overtrading. Siegfried, David

Starred Review. It’s tempting to blame your upbringing or your stingy boss, but the real culprit in your flawed relationship with money is your very own brain, argues finance writer Zweig. Combining concepts in neuroscience, economics and psychology, he explains how our biology drives us toward good or bad investment decision. Our brains are pretty self-deceptive, it turns out: we have difficulty admitting our lack of knowledge about finances; we overestimate our own wisdom and performance; and our preference for mistakes of action rather than inaction often leads us to irrational investment decisions. Most tellingly, humans believe we’re smart enough to forecast the future even when we have been explicitly told that it is unpredictable. Among the book’s fun facts: the MRI brain scan of a cocaine addict is virtually identical to that of someone who thinks he is about to make money. Backed by stellar research and written in an entertaining, informal style that makes a complex subject accessible to the layperson, Zweig makes clear how we can understand what our brains are doing and how to use that knowledge to get out of our own way and invest wisely

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha’s Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz’s new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day “MasterFast,” which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

* Maintenance plans
* Dozens of easy, delicious recipes
* Real-life tips
* An extensive glossary of terms
* A guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and “live” juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body’s systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn’t just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detox diet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.
