										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) released <a href="http://bit.ly/2bAPueN" target="_blank">Best Practices for Consumer Wearables and Wellness Apps and Devices</a>, a detailed set of guidelines that responsible companies can follow to ensure they provide practical privacy protections for consumer-generated health and wellness data:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“Fitness and wellness data from apps and wearables provide significant benefits for users, but it is essential that companies incorporate Fair Information Practice Principles to safeguard this data,” said Jules Polonetsky, FPF’s CEO.</p>
<p>“Overcoming privacy concerns associated with wearable technologies is necessary to ensure their equitable access and use by global populations,” said Derek Yach, Chief Health Officer &amp; Gillian Christie, Health Innovation Analyst, Vitality. “The Future of Privacy Forum’s guidance on consumer wearables and wellness devices showcases these challenges and explicitly outlines best practices for companies engaged in designing and deploying these technologies.”</p>
<p>The Best Practices build on current legal protections and app platform guidelines by providing specific guidance to ensure consumer apps include appropriate privacy protections, as well as developing responsible guidelines for research and other secondary uses of consumer-generated wellness data. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) articulated significant gaps in regulating health information privacy and security in a report released last month. HHS recognized that while technological innovation has advanced at an extraordinary pace in recent years, privacy and security protections of health information have not kept up.[1] The Best Practices released today begin to build norms for such data by making recommendations for privacy practices that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Provide consumers choices about the sharing and use of their data;</li>
<li>Support interoperability with global privacy frameworks and leading app platform standards; and</li>
<li>Elevate data norms around research, privacy, and security.
</ul>
<p>“Some data collected from wearables may be relatively trivial, but other data can be highly sensitive,” said Kelsey Finch, Policy Counsel, FPF. “These principles are tailored to provide appropriate protections calibrated to the nature and sensitivity of the data.”</li>
<p>In addition, a new FPF Mobile Apps Study underscores the necessity of strong Best Practices for health and wellness data. The App Study revealed that while the number of apps that provide privacy policies continues its upward trend from our previous surveys in 2011 and 2012, health and fitness apps – which may access sensitive, physiological data collected by sensors on a mobile phone, wearable, or other device – do worse than average at providing privacy policies. Only 70% of top health and fitness apps had a privacy policy (6% lower than overall top apps), and only 61% linked to it from the app platform listing page (10% lower than overall top apps).</p>
<p>The App Study also looked specifically at period tracking and sleep aid apps. Only 63% of period tracking apps provided a link to the privacy policy from the app platform listing page. More disappointingly, only 54% of sleep aid apps provided a link to the privacy policy from the app platform listing page.</p>
<p>“Even though a privacy policy is not the be all and end all for building consumer trust, there is no excuse for failing to provide one – doing so is the baseline standard,” said John Verdi, FPF’s Vice President of Policy. “App platforms have made it easier for developers to provide access to privacy policies. Consumers expect direct access to privacy policies, and users can review them before downloading an app.”</em></p></blockquote>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Future of Privacy Forum recently published <a href="http://bit.ly/1C8pgVX" target="_blank">an excellent whitepaper</a> on the discussion of privacy and data security in the wearables market:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Throughout the United States and around the world, consumers are beginning to rely on devices and technologies that take advantage of the Internet of Things, the growing network of connected objects uniting the digital and physical worlds. Within the Internet of Things market, one of the fastest growing segments is wearable devices, estimated to grow from 22 million shipments in 2014 to 135 million by 2018. Fitness bands and smartwatches are the most popular wearables today, but smart clothing, glasses, jewelry, clip-ons and wearable cameras, among others, are all poised for rapid consumer adoption in the coming years.</p>
<p>Designed for ubiquitous use wearables are highly personalized devices that hold the potential to greatly improve consumers&#8217; lives – but also the potential to raise new privacy and security risks. Responding to consumer desires and demand, wearable devices deploy a wide range of sensors to collect new or increasingly sensitive environmental, behavioral and social data for and from their users. Data output from these devices is already generating substantial benefits for individual users and society generally, such as helping individuals manage their fitness, exercise and biofeedback, improving personal productivity and efficiency, and making other technologies simpler and easier to use.4 In general, proponents of measuring ordinary life and the &#8220;Quantified Self&#8221; believe that technological self-tracking, such as through wearable devices, will enable new fronts for self-knowledge and self-advancement. 5 That same data, if not properly protected, or if used in unethical or illegal ways, could be used to put individuals&#8217; privacy at risk. Critics worry that consumers could find themselves discriminated against by employers or insurers on the basis of their self-generated information, or have their reputations damaged or their safety put at risk by a data breach.</p>
<p>At this early stage in their development, it is difficult to fully predict what the opportunities or risks of wearable devices will be. In many cases, traditional Fair Information Privacy Practices (FIPPs) will aptly address wearables&#8217; privacy and security issues, because there will be opportunities for familiar consumer notice and choice mechanisms and other key privacy elements. In other cases, however, there will need to be more common sense applications of these elements.</p>
<p>As the FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez recently noted, &#8220;We are on the cusp of a new technological revolution&#8221; with &#8220;an important opportunity to ensure that new technologies with the potential to provide enormous benefits develop in a way that also protects consumer information.&#8221; We agree that important steps can be taken now to address privacy and security issues in the evolving world of wearables. However, rigid or premature reactions to wearable devices risks both over- and under-protecting individuals&#8217; privacy at great cost to innovation and society. We must recognize the complexity of this innovative industry and adapt our protections accordingly to encourage the evolution of equally innovative data protection methods. This paper examines the need for forward-thinking, flexible applications of traditional privacy principles and protections to safeguard individual privacy while wearable technologies and norms continue to mature.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>The ramp represents a compound annual growth rate of 78.4 percent.</p>
<p>Early adopters have been buying fitness monitors such as Nike FuelBand, Jawbone UP and Fitbit, which operate partially stand-alone but can be connected to a smartphone, tablet or personal computer to achieve full functionality.</p>
<p>Complex accessories have succeeded in drawing attention to a wearables market that has had some difficulty gaining traction according to Ramon Llamas, a research manager with IDC.</p>
<p>Similar to the complex accessory, which piggybacks off pre-existing computing devices, the smart accessory comes with an ability to host third-party applications so that connection and crowd-sourced information create value for the user. While not quite ready for prime time, the smart accessory market will continue to mature as users better understand and accept the value proposition and vendors refine their offerings.</p>
<p>The third segment of the wearables market is smart wearables, such as Google Glass, which function with full autonomy, independent of any other device except to access the Internet. IDC said the &#8220;runway&#8221; for smart wearables is long, and it will not be until 2016 that millions of units will be shipping.</p>
<p>Samsung is the most trusted brand with regard to wearables, followed by Apple, Sony and Google, according to research conducted by IDC amongst 50,000 consumers in 26 countries.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just encountered this problem twice within one week so I quickly wanted to share the solution with you. So if your MacBook or MacBook Pro is just not rebooting or charging anymore then you will probably need to reset the System Management Controller (SMC). Here&#8217;s how:</p>
<p>Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery <strong>you can remove</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Shut down the computer.</li>
<li>Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it&#8217;s connected.</li>
<li>Remove the battery.</li>
<li>Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.</li>
<li>Release the power button.</li>
<li>Reconnect the MagSafe power adapter and wait a few seconds (the light should go green).</li>
<li>Then put the battery back and wait another few seconds.</li>
<li>Press the power button to turn on the computer.</li>
</ol>
<p>Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery <strong>you should not remove on your own</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Shut down the computer.</li>
<li>Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.</li>
<li>On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.</li>
<li>Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.</li>
<li>Press the power button to turn on the computer.</li>
</ol>
<p><em>Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.</em></p>
<p>This should do it, and did it for me with an older MacBook and a newer MacBook Pro.</p>

<p>They were just recently rated #1 in America&#8217;s Best New Restaurants by <a href="http://www.bonappetit.com/restaurants-travel/2012/09/state-bird-hot-ten" target="_blank">bon appétit magazine</a>:</p>

<blockquote><p>After a successful run at the city&#8217;s legendary Rubicon, the couple took an almost three-year leave from the restaurant game, cooking instead at private events. &#8220;It afforded us this bizarre freedom,&#8221; Brioza recalls. &#8220;Each dish was a small bite, so you didn&#8217;t have to commit to anything. It was like an hors d&#8217;oeuvres party—we&#8217;d bring out 16 different dishes and pass them.&#8221; Most improtant, he says, it was fun. Soon they found themselves trying to turn the hors d&#8217;oevre concept into a restaurant. They thought they&#8217;d found the perfect spot, but the site wasn&#8217;t coded to serve food. So the landlord offered them a smaller space in a former pizzeria. &#8220;We almost didn&#8217;t take it,&#8221; says Brioza. &#8220;We were very close to getting out of the business altogether.&#8221; Thankfully, they signed.</p></blockquote>

<p>I have actually been there two times before and it certainly is the best restaurant and food I enjoyed in many years.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>today google+ made further headlines introducing &#8220;games&#8221; to their latest inception of their next attempt to conquer the social web.</p>
<p>at first i thought &#8220;whatever, i have never played a single game on facebook, so why should i care about introducing games to google+?&#8221;</p>
<p>but there is a bigger picture here, google has tried numerous times with orkut, buzz, buying and killing jaiku and many others to establish a serious footprint in the social networking space. but finally in hiring some of the brightest minds in this space, people like <a href="https://plus.google.com/113364856660738963998/posts" target="_blank">joseph smarr</a> and <a href="https://plus.google.com/102034052532213921839/posts" target="_blank">chris messina</a>, they have something going here.</p>
<p>with friends working at google i got in early (thanks christoph), i was able to check out google+, shared some posts, added friends to circles and see what is happening. and now that i installed the recent <a href="http://bit.ly/qBxYRf" target="_blank">desktop app</a> i have google+ running on my secondary screen more prominently than facebook or twitter, i am able to see the potential.</p>
<p>the team behind google+ did a lot of things right this time around. first and foremost a good branding: no new name/logo but a solid stand: &#8220;this is google&#8221;, the way every resident of the interwebs knows it. and an easy to adapt way/widget to &#8220;1+&#8221; something without trying to introduce new verbiage like &#8220;like&#8221; or &#8220;tweet&#8221;.</p>
<p>the functionality is all there, sharing what you care about with certain groups or &#8220;circles&#8221; much easier, the essence of what it means to be a &#8220;social network&#8221; nailed.</p>
<p>coming back to the point that introducing &#8220;games&#8221; is less significant to me than knowing that they have a lot more up their sleeves that will make this the most serious contender in winning the social networking game in the next century.</p>
<p>many sites are implementing google+ quickly as it grows and i am certain there is a lot more to come in regards to integration, sharing, apps, games and functionality to make you have to join (if you haven&#8217;t already) and to use on an everyday basis.</p>
<p>so better late than never: welcome <a href="http://plus.google.com/" target="_blank">google+</a> as the next best thing in social networking!</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_placement" rel="tag" target="_blank">product placement</a> is not a new way in advertising products and services, it has been around for centuries and is known from many movies. we got used to it, just spend enough dollars and james bond will drive a bmw or will smith an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_RSQ" rel="tag" target="_blank">audi</a> &#8211; <a href="http://www.netzkobold.com/uploads/pictures/matrix_phone.jpg" rel="tag" target="_blank">cell phones</a>, laptops, furniture, tobacco, deodorant, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manner" rel="tag" target="_blank">food</a>, all sorts of consumer electronics, you name it.</p>
<p>now the industry seems to have taken this approach a step further and professionalized &#8216;brand dropping&#8217; in songs of popular music artists, simply selling elements of their songs to the highest bidder.</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;things have gotten so weird in the music business that high-profile acts are inserting ads into their song lyrics. the next time you hear a brand mentioned in a song, it could be due to a paid product placement. and unlike magazines, songs are not required to point out which words are part of an advertisement.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>i appreciate that artists need to embrace a variety of revenue opportunities to make it today, but selling song lyrics seems to go over the line.</p>
<p>a further spin to the story is how a sales rep of adam kluger of <a href="http://www.klugeragency.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">the kluger agency</a> tried to pitch jeff crouse of the anti-advertising agency and double happiness jeans, probably the last people on earth who kluger would want to receive the pitch e-mail, now threatening him with lawyers because he published the story on his <a href="http://antiadvertisingagency.com/news/product-placement-oppertunity-from-adamklugerinboxcom" rel="tag" target="_blank">blog</a> &#8211; the whole story at <a href="http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/09/products-placed.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">wired</a>.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>this morning <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080923/google-android-phone-3g-179-amazon-mp3-app-store/" rel="tag" target="_blank">google and t-mobile launched the first android-powered handset</a> manufactured by htc. this largely anticipated device comes with a big touchscreen and a slide-open full keyboard. it&#8217;s a 3g phone, wifi enabled, built-in gps, <a href="http://www.amazonmp3.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">drm-free amazon mp3 music store</a>, android market app store, 1gb storage, copy and paste and a chrome-lite browser. it will be available october 22, 2008 at $179.</p>
<p>i had the chance to play around with it for a while and i have to say it is better than i expected. the touchscreen functionality competes with the apple iphone, design and look and feel are pretty good (despite what i expected from google), the htc device itself is bulkier, thicker and heavier than the iphone but still competes in a market where blackberry&#8217;s and sidekicks are popular devices. there are already tons of fun and helpful applications available and based on it&#8217;s open <a href="http://code.google.com/android/" rel="tag" target="_blank">google android platform</a> i&#8217;m sure there is way more to come. congrats to t-mobile and google, great move.</p>

<p>some of the new features are: 3g broadband wireless connectivity, built-in gps and a couple of great location-based services like <a href="http://www.loopt.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">loopt</a>, contact search, full iwork document support, microsoft powerpoint support, bulk delete and move, saving email image attachments, scientific calculator, parental controls (mainly for youtube/itunes), many more languages supported (on the fly switching), plastic back and thinner edges, the new <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/appstore.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">apple appstore</a> and many more. the new iphone 3g is now also more <a href="http://www.netzkobold.com/index.php?/archives/283-apple-wwdc-2008-steve-jobs-keynote-live.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">enterprise-ready</a> by supporting microsoft exchange activesync &#8211; push email, calendar and contacts &#8211; &#8220;the power of a laptop into the size of a smartphone&#8221; &#8211; <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise/" rel="tag" target="_blank">more &#8230;</a> but i&#8217;m actually most excited about <a href="http://www.apple.com/mobileme/" rel="tag" target="_blank">mobileme</a>, which is &#8220;exchange for the rest of us&#8221;.</p>

<p>i&#8217;m already a sync fanatic, all my phones (including my iphone), my two laptops (mac and pc) and my desktop at home are synced with each other and with multiple online address books through <a href="http://www.plaxo.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">plaxo</a>, but so far it only syncs my contacts, calendar and notes. <a href="http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/" rel="tag" target="_blank">mobileme</a> takes this two steps further.</p>

All with amazing applications that are so feature-rich and easy to use, you may end up preferring them to your regular desktop applications.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>this is not only an even nicer, more structured and more instant contacts, calendar and notes sync, i can even access my picture gallery and <a href="http://www.apple.com/dotmac/idisk.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">idisk</a> from wherever i am, either through my iphone, my macbook pro (pc&#8217;s are supported too) and any web-browser through a feature-rich desktop-application-like web interface at <a href="http://me.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">me.com</a>. changes on your iphone for instance will will take immediate effect on your computer, you can access the same files, folders, pictures wherever you are.</p>
<p>i love it, i&#8217;ll get the new iphone 3g on july 11th and you can <a href="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc08/" rel="tag" target="_blank">watch the whole keynote here</a>.</p>

<p>reminded me of a conversation which i had with my brother in law regarding the enterprise capabilities of the iphone and that at that point it wasn&#8217;t quite ready for enterprises&#8217; security and exchange requirements. in a later <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2008/tc20080311_060174_page_2.htm" rel="tag" target="_blank">interview with business week&#8217;s olga kharif</a> i have been quoted</p>

<p>now director simon ratigan of <a href="http://www.hla.net" rel="tag" target="blank">hla</a> has worked with a crew of 150 to demonstrate the capacity of sony hd handycam and cybershot cameras to capture the beauty of bubbles.</p>

<p>200 locals were provided with the cameras and asked to record their foamy frolicking. their footage, along with professional shots, is being combined for a campaign that will be introduced to the public in stages, finally reaching televisions in the uk and europe on 1st may, 2008.</p>

<p>robin hilton wrote a <a href="http://www.warc.com/ConferenceBlogs/WOM-012008.asp#Post_134" rel="tag" target="_blank">report on yesterday&#8217;s word of mouth marketing forum</a> at the <a href="http://www.warc.com/ConferenceBlogs/WOM-012008.asp" rel="tag" target="_blank">warc wom forum blog</a>. the conference provided a mix of case studies, theories and how to&#8217;s, starting with what word-of-mouth marketing is &#8220;giving people a reason to talk about your product/service and making it easier for that conversation to take place&#8221; <em>(source <a href="http://www.womma.org" rel="tag" target="_blank">womma</a>)</em> to wom as a discipline, <a href="http://www.warc.com/ConferenceBlogs/WOM-012008.asp#Post_134" rel="tag" target="_blank">read more</a>.</p>
<p>a couple of my friends were there like <a href="http://www.viralculture.com" rel="tag" target="_blank">paul marsden</a> and <a href="http://www.connectedmarketing.de" rel="tag" target="_blank">martin oetting</a> but i was hoping to find some more material from this conference online like blog posts, slideshows or video material. hopefully some of the speakers or participants will provide more information for the ones who couldn&#8217;t make it there.</p>

<p>on another note, check out this article on &#8220;<a href="http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/536182/" rel="tag" target="_blank">common word-of-mouth beats &#8216;highly-connected&#8217; influencers</a>&#8221; from the december 2007 issue of the journal of advertising research.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;we find that trying to track down key influencers, people who have extremely large social networks, is typically unnecessary and, more importantly, can actually limit a campaign or advertisement&#8217;s viral potential,&#8221; said james coyle. &#8220;instead, marketers need to realize that the majority of their audience, not just the well-connected few, is eager and willing to pass along well-designed and relevant messages.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>the study reinforced that consumers respond more to messages that are unique and trusted. in addition, consumers who believe they are capable of performing the advertised behavior are more willing to pass along information to friends and relatives within their social networks. coyle added that this isn&#8217;t new. &#8220;it&#8217;s always been this way. what&#8217;s changed is that digital media makes it so easy for everyone to forward messages to contacts within their social networks. for most everyone, digital media just extends a very human desire to help others.&#8221;</p>
