(WAVY) — The Anaheim Ducks have recalled Admirals goaltender John Gibson. Thursday night in the Ducks 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings, former Admiral goaltender Frederik Andersen left the game in the third period with what appeared to be a leg injury.

The loss of Gibson is a blow to the Admirals. He had been outstanding for Norfolk in the playoffs, and he registered 80 saves in two games against the St. John’s IceCaps. The series is tied 1-1 and resumes Saturday night at Scope.

With Gibson now in the NHL, the Admirals turn netminding duties over to 28-year-old Brad Thiessen.

“Both he and Gibson have been the strengths of our team throughout the year,” coach Trent Yawney said.

“Thiessen gives us coaches a pretty comforting feeling, we wouldn’t be doing this today if it wasn’t for him down the stretch.”

Thiessen was instrumental in helping the Admirals secure the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. At the time, Gibson was in Anaheim, but was sent down to Norfolk before the AHL playoffs and replaced Thiessen in net.

The Admirals host three consecutive playoff games at Scope, Saturuday, Monday and Tuesday. The series then shifts to St. John’s for games 6 and 7 if necessary.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY)- Wherever Dennis Nixon goes, Maddie is not far behind.

The game of softball and Maddie, are two of the great loves of his life. “I love it. Basketball was my game in college and I played one year of baseball, but softball is my love right here.”

He must love it. Nixon first stepped on the field at Princess Anne 30 years ago. In that time he has established himself as one of the winningest coaches in the state of Virginia with over 450 wins. Senior second baseman Anna Kalasinsky is just one of the many young ladies to learn the game from Nixon. “It’s probably the best experience I’ve ever had. Honestly because he is such a good coach. He knows the game so well that he teaches you things you would not even think you know about the game.”

Nixon doesn’t pull any punches when coaching his girls.”I figure anything I can hit them, they can catch in the game if the other girls hit them. If you watch in warm ups, I hit forehand and backhand and not right at them, with a little pepper,” says Nixon.

His players know, that tough approach will only make them better. Emily Will says she has become a much better player learning from Nixon. “Because he knows that were going to do really well, he’s hard on us because he knows that’s going to make us better.”

“He understands us. He’s not patronizing. He does not talk down to us. He knows how to calm us down in high stress situations,” says senior shortstop Angel Harrison.

Other coaches in the area know they are going to get the best from a Nixon coached softball team. He even has the respect from longtime umpires like Chris Miller. “Umpires respect him for who he is. He’s been doing this a long time. He’s got a lot of wins under his belt. He knows the game and he’s out here for the girls and not himself.”

Very much like his buddy Maddie, Dennis Nixon is loyal and trustworthy. But his focus is and always will be on developing the young ladies of Princess Anne softball. “I think they deserve everything. They’ve always been slighted if you ask me throughout their careers and now all seniors get scholarships so it helps the parents out,” added Nixon.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – If Saturday night was any indication of what postseason life will be like without John Gibson in goal, the Norfolk Admirals better kick their offense into high gear.

The Admirals gave up four third-period goals, and fell to visiting St. John’s 5-3 in game three of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Ice Caps now have a 2-1 series lead, and have taken back home-ice advantage after losing the series-opener 3-1.

With Gibson in the net, it took the Admirals four games before they surrendered their fifth playoff goal. Granted, not all the blame goes to Brad Thiessen, who saved 26 of 30 shot attempts. Gibson, meanwhile, lead Norfolk’s parent-club Anaheim to a 2-0 win over the Los Angelas Kings in game four of the Western Conference semifinals of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

To boot, it was Gibson’s first career playoff start.

The Admirals and Ice Caps will play game 4 of the series on Monday night, and will drop the puck at 7:15.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- The Norfolk Admirals did what they had to do on the road, and now they have a chance to take down the top-seed Manchester Monarchs on their home ice.

The Admirals managed a 3-2 win on Saturday to tie their first-round series at one win a piece, and will now play their next three games against the Monarchs at the Norfolk Scope.

“We’re cognizant of the fact that it’s a best of three, and with a best of three those three go by pretty quickly,” said Admirals head coach Trent Yawney after Monday’s practice, “They know what they’re up against now…one of the higher-scoring teams in the league.”

The first home game will be Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
