Community Forestry in Changing Context: Emerging Market Opportunities and Tenure Rights

Abstract:

This report identifies the challenges for Nepal’s community forestry in responding to the changing livelihoods and emerging market opportunities. Whilst community forestry has been regarded as a radical programme with its early inception during the 1980s, it has not been adequately adaptive to the changing contexts of the recent years. Instead, the state has maintained control over the productive forests and lands in order to secure revenue and to meet the vested interests of the ruling elites.

पोखरा उपत्यकाका सवैजसो तालहरुमा जलकुम्भि झारले दुख दिने गरेको छ । वर्षेनी यो झारलाई तालवाट हटाएर नजिकै किनारामा थुपारिंदै आएको अवस्थामा पैसा र श्रमको लागत उच्च रहेको छ । यसै सन्दर्भमा वेटल्याण्ड फ्रेण्डस अफ नेपाल (Wetland Friends of Nepal) ले रुपातालको जैविक स्रोत संरक्षण अभियान नामक संस्थासंगको साझेदारी र टोयोटा वातावरणीय कृयाकलाप अनुदान कार्यक्रम (Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program) को आर्थिक सहयोगमा जलकुम्भि झारवाट कम्पोष्ट मल वनाउने प्रविधिको विकास गरेको छ । तिन महिना लामो प्रयोगात्मक अनुसन्धान र रासायनिक जांचवाट यो प्रविधिको विकास भएको हो ।

Recommendations of Kathmandu Global Tiger Workshop

More than 250 tiger experts and participants from 13 of the 14 tiger range countries participated in Kathmandu Global Tiger Workshop from 27-30 October 2009. The workshop was inaugurated by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. The workshop recommended following transformational actions that will stop the tiger’s decline and achieve the goal of doubling the population of wild tigers within the next ten years.

Carbon Sequestration in Schima‐Castanopsis Forest: A Case Study from Palpa District

Abstract:

Forests are natural carbon sink and play an important role in sequestrating the atmospheric carbon into biomass and soil. Estimation of total biomass and soil carbon sequestered in any forest is very important as it gives ecological and economic benefits to the local people. Schima‐Castanopsis forests were selected for the study in Palpa district with the objectives of quantifying the total carbon sequestration, and evaluation of aspect and elevation on carbon storage. Stratified random sampling method was used for assessing biomass.

Climate Change Induced Potential Impacts (eco‐physiological) on Insect‐Pests in Nepalese Forests: A Synopsis for Future Research and Management

Abstract:

This study aims at reviewing the available literatures on the eco-physiological impacts of climate change on forest insect-pests and its hosts. Methodology adopted for preparing the paper is the critical review of literatures available in Copenhagen University’s Life library databases. Withstanding with the global projections of climate change, Nepal will experience a noticeable rise in temperature and changed rainfall pattern throughout the country in years to come. These changes can create mixed eco-physiological impacts over the insect-pests of Nepalese Forests.

Chhat Puja: A Combination of Biodiversity Conservation, Social Integrity and Local Livelihood

"Chhat Puja" is now emerged as a National festival. According to the media coverage and experiences of different places it is not only a festival of Terai origin Hindu people but already accepted and even started celebration by Hill origin people and also by Muslim families (see Chhat le Jodadai chha Madesh ra Pahad, Nagrik Daily 23 October pg. 8). The four days long festival needs a lot of attentions and preparation because of its requirements. I have tried to explore the biodiversity, social integrity and livelihood aspects of the great festival.
