The fairways and rough will be cut to one inch which is the same as the intermediate cut?you won?t have to struggle with the thick rough any more!

In May, we will become an approved Family Course through the U.S. Kids Golf Association?we will be the only approved Family Course in our area.

The setup of the Family Course will have par 3?s, par 4?s and par 5?s. The yardage will range from 45 ? 115 yards for a par 3, 85 ? 245 yards for a par 4 and 135 ? 345 yards for a par 5. There will be two sets of tees for the different skill levels of the kids.

When the late Rick Ford opened up his Ford's Colony golf course last year, Rocky Mount gained not only an exquisite 18-hole facility, but he made sure it was going to be in experienced, exceptional hands.

Since last Sept. 17, Damon Aswad has been the head golf pro at Ford's Colony.

For seven years before he arrived in Nash County, the 31-year-old Aswad learned the business of golf as an assistant at almost all of the eight courses at storied Pinehurst in the Sandhills.

"I was at one place for seven years with seven different job titles," he remembers fondly.

Two local education scholarships that honor the late Richard J. "Rick" Ford, Jr., founder of Ford's Colony in Rocky Mount, will grow larger from the proceeds of 10K and 5K races to be held along the golf paths at Ford's Colony on Saturday, September 13.

The Rocky Mount Endurance Club is directing the inaugural Ford's Colony 5k and 10k races presented by Davenport Honda. All race proceeds will be divided between the memorial scholarships that honor Ford at North Carolina Wesleyan College and Nash Community College.

Rocky Mount native and University of North Carolina basketball legend Phil Ford has spent weeks convincing more than 30 basketball stars to come to a black-tie gala Friday night to kick off his charity golf event.

He now is urging residents to buy tickets to the event where they can mingle with the players.

The "Ambassadors' Black Tie Gala," which will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties, is scheduled for Aug. 15 at the Gateway Convention Center from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets cost $100. Attendees will be able to meet stars such as North Carolina head basketball coach Roy Williams, former North Carolina head coach Dean Smith, Dallas Mavericks player Jerry Stackhouse, Charlotte Hornents player Dell Curry and Washington Wizards player Antwan Jamison.

David Johnson found his life's calling before he was old enough to shave. He began doodling extravagant golf holes while a student at Bruton High, between classes on geometry and American History. He drew hundreds of imaginative layouts, prompting him to pursue a career in golf landscape architecture.

"I still have some of those sketches," Johnson, 42, said in an interview Monday. "Some of them were very tough, with a lot of water hazards. I doubt that we could afford to build most of them."

He took his creativity one step further by turning the family backyard into a small golf course with moss-covered greens and sand bunkers. "My parents weren't very happy about it, but they understood that it was something I wanted to do," he recalled.

As I perused the wines-by-the-glass menu at The Dining Room at Ford's Colony in Williamsburg, my eyes lit on the sparkling wine options. I ordered a glass of the French champagne; my husband, Keith, chose the shiraz sparkler.

At many other restaurants, this never would have occurred to us. Order sparkling wine by the glass? For sure it would be flat and musty from sitting around.

Schools must offer children hope and confidence, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue said on Tuesday during a stop at Williford Elementary School in Rocky Mount. "You are all very smart children," Perdue told a group of kindergarten students learning to write in an early intervention lab. "Very smart."

Her brow furrowed, 6-year-old Ji'yanna Hewitt tilted her head to face Perdue and corrected the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful.

"I'm the smartest kid in school," Ji'yanna said.

Rocky Mount now has another course to enjoy the wonderful game of golf. Ford's Colony opened an 18-hole, par-72 golf course last month.

Ford's Colony Club, a semi-private course, plays short from the white tees- only stretching a mere 6,053 yards. But don't be fooled by the distance from tee to green. The course is difficult.

Several "fore bunkers"- bunkers located 30-plus yards in front of the green but appear to be right against the green - can fool a player into thinking his approach shot is shorter than the yard markers portray. Follow the yard markers and a nice score can be mustered from the white tees.

The black tees make this course one of the tougher 18 holes in the area. Tee to green stretches 7,095 yards with doglegs left and right, shots over water hazards and bunkers that are deceivingly tough from which to play.

There's no doubt they raised the curtain on a new era of golf in Rocky Mount two weeks ago. The occasion was a loosely-described media day at Ford's Colony with the debut of a much-anticipated, what has to be described as at least, a four- star, 18-hole layout. From tee to fairway to green, the course is spectacular, despite the fact it has been at the mercy of the worst drought in memory. This was a round of golf that I'd rarely experienced, and I've been fortunate enough to play places such as Torrey Pines in San Diego and Shoal Creek in Birmingham. With more than 60 units reserved, Ford's Colony has broken ground on its first luxury condominium project - Eaglescliffe - which will bring maintenance-free living to the heart of Ford's Colony Williamsburg.

"We saved the best for last," said Brian Ford, general manager of Ford's Colony Williamsburg. "After many years of value building we feel that Ford's Colony Williamsburg is ready for condominiums that offer a lavish atmosphere combined with convenience."

Presales on the condominiums opened this summer and will culminate in a sales weekend this fall. Ford's Colony sales staff has teamed up with real estate brokers in eastern North Carolina to get the word out about Ford's Colony Rocky Mount, the sister property to the award-winning Ford's Colony Williamsburg.

Lamar Cumbee, director of customer relations for the Rocky Mount property, has been visiting real estate agencies in Rocky Mount and across eastern North Carolina since August to educate local brokers about Ford's Colony Rocky Mount and to let them know about the broker referral program.

"When I call on these agencies I tell the brokers about the Ford's Colony story, the newest chapter being our 1,400-acre gated community under development in Rocky Mount," Cumbee said. The new course was designed by David Johnson Golf Design of Atlanta and is being built by Landscapes Unlimited, which is based in Lincoln, Neb. and which has an office in Southern Pines, N.C. Construction is scheduled for completion in August 2006, with play beginning in the summer of 2007.

Ford's Colony Williamsburg, the site of 54 holes of championship golf, has opened a new state-of-the-art Golf Learning Center that features indoor practice tees, video swing analysis, dynamic club fitting, short-game practice area and a full-time director of golf instruction.

"Our new Golf Learning Center will take golf instruction at Ford's Colony to an entirely new level," said Mark Houston, who has been named director of golf instruction at Ford's Colony, working with Head Professional Andy Woodruff. "We will offer the latest techniques in teaching the game of golf, all within a year-round, heated and air conditioned environment."

The Golf Learning Center, which was two years in planning, design and construction, includes six indoor practice tees, which allow players to work on their games during any weather conditions. Ford's Colony Williamsburg Hires New Golf Professional

Tim Poland has joined the golf instruction team at Ford's Colony Williamsburg, home to 54 holes of championship golf and a new Golf Learning Center.

Poland, 48, comes to Ford's Colony after more than 20 years teaching at area golf clubs. He was a four-year letterman on the golf team at Gloucester High School in Gloucester, Va. He later played for two years on the Ferrum College Golf Team in Ferrum, Va.

Drawn to both the game and the business of golf, Poland earned his Class A membership to the Professional Golfers' Association in 1982. More recently, he won the Winter Series Pro Am by four shots with a score of 67. Poland played in the 1987, 1988 and 1989 Anheuser Busch Golf Classics, a PGA tournament.
