Hiking Mount Eisenhower via Edmands Path | White Mountains Presidential Range Trail Guide

Thinking about hiking the White Mountains and tackling a peak in the Presidential Range? This is your complete trail guide to hiking Mount Eisenhower via the scenic and moderately challenging Edmands Path in New Hampshire.

The Edmands Path is a 6.6-mile round trip trail starting off Mount Clinton Road. With well-graded switchbacks, stream crossings, and a steady incline, it’s a manageable route for hikers looking to summit a Presidential peak without the intense elevation of other routes.

At the summit of Mount Eisenhower, you’ll enjoy breathtaking 360° views of the White Mountains, including Mount Washington and Mount Pierce. This is one of the best ways to experience the Presidentials hike with less technical challenge — ideal for intermediate hikers.

Schoodic Head, located on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park, is a serene and less-traveled destination offering some of the most stunning views in the region. Standing at 440 feet, it's the highest point on the peninsula, providing sweeping vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, rugged granite cliffs, and dense forests. The trails leading to the summit wind through a mix of coastal woods and rocky terrain, offering hikers a quiet, scenic journey. From the top, visitors are rewarded with unobstructed views of Mount Desert Island, Frenchman Bay, and the surrounding waters, making it a peaceful yet dramatic highlight of Acadia.

For our hike we began at the Blueberry Hill parking area and took the Anvil Trail over the Anvil and then to the summit Schoodic Head. A short distance north of the summit is a scenic vista well worth the extra hike. We returned via the Schoodic Head Trail and the Alder Trail, which brought us back to the Blueberry Hill parking area. The total hike was about 3 miles and there was about 500' of elevation gain along the way.

Southwest Hunter via the Fenwick Lumber Railroad

Southwest Hunter, often referred to as Leavitt Peak, is one of the Catskill 3500 peaks and stands at 3,740 feet. Unlike nearby Hunter Mountain, Southwest Hunter is much less frequently visited. The peak is densely forested, offering no views compared to Hunter Mountain next door with its many views and Fire Tower. Reaching Southwest Hunter requires a bit of navigation, as there is no official trail to the summit. The typical route is via the Devil’s Path and then an unmarked but well-known and easy to follow herd path to the top.

For our trip we began in Lanesville and climbed up Myrtle Creek to the ruins of the old Fenwick Lumber Company mill. From there we followed the railroad grade from the mill, to the notch where the Devil's Acre Lean-to now sits and where the old Fenwick Lumber Camp used to be. From the lean-to we followed the Devil's Path to the herd path to the summit of Southwest Hunter. On the return we hiked down the Devil's Path to Stony Clove Notch and then down Route 214.

The Fenwick Lumber Railroad was a short-lived logging railroad that operated on Hunter and Southwest Mountains in the early 20th century. It was built by the Fenwick Lumber Company to harvest timber on the two mountain tops. The railroad was used to lower logs from the logging camp down to the mill in Lanesville, where the lumber was then loaded on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad that passed through Lanesville and Stony Clove and took the wood south to markets.

Mount Pemigewasset is a prominent peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, located within Franconia Notch State Park. At 2,557 feet, Mount Pemigewasset is known for its distinctive profile. The most popular route to the summit is the Indian Head Trail, a moderate to challenging 3.8-mile in and out hike that begins south of the Indian Head Resort on Route 3. The mountain can also be climbed via the Mount Pemigewasset Trail, which begins at the Flume parking lot off our Route 3 just before it joins Interstate 93 to pass through Franconia Notch. That route is 3.4 miles in and out.

For the effort of the climb, you are rewarded with stunning views of the southern end of Franconia Notch, the surrounding peaks, and the Pemigewasset River valley.

For this hike we strung together the Indian Head Trail, the Mount Pemigewasset Trail, and a road walk on Route 3 to create a almost five mile loop hike. The hike started at the Indian Head Trail trailhead on Route 3, climbed Mount Pemigewasset on the 1.6 mile long Indian Head Trail, then descended to the Flume Parking Area on the 1.7 mile long Mount Pemigewasset Trail, and then walked down Route 3 1.5 miles back to the Indian Head Trail trailhead to complete the loop.

The total hike is about 5 miles in length with about 1,500 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is moderate to difficult, with some steep and rocky spots along the way.

Glory Hole Falls is a unique waterfall located in the Ozark National Forest near the town of Deer, Arkansas and within the Upper Buffalo National River area. Unlike typical waterfalls that cascade over the edge of a cliff, Glory Hole Falls features a stream that has carved a hole through an overhanging rock, creating a waterfall that pours through the opening, or glory hole.

The hike to Glory Hole Falls is an easy to moderately challenging trail that is approximately 2 miles round trip (in and out). The trail descends through a dense forest, along a generally easy grade, though closer to the falls, the trail does descend more steeply. The area around the falls provides excellent opportunities for photography, picnicking, and simply enjoying the beauty of this hidden gem in Arkansas.

Mount Tom (4,051') and Mount Field (4,327') are two of New Hampshire's 48 mountain peaks that reach above 4000 feet in elevation. While Mount Tom doesn't offer much of a view, Mount Field does. In addition Tom and Field, the hike also includes a climb over the smaller Mount Avalon, which offers the best view of all three mountains.

The total hike is about 7 miles in length with about 2,800 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is moderate to difficult, with some steep and rocky spots along the way.

Mount Jackson and Mount Webster are prominent peaks located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, forming the eastern end of the Presidential Range. Mount Webster, at 3,910 feet, has a steep ascent, topping out with stunning overlooks of Crawford Notch. Mount Jackson, standing at 4,052 feet, and one of NH's 4000 footers, offers a 360-degree views from its rocky summit, including vistas of Mount Washington. The rugged terrain makes for the the scenic and challenging Webster-Jackson (lollipop) loop.

Starting from the Crawford Notch State Park on Route 302, we hiked up the Webster-Jackson Trail. The climb is strenuous and at 1.3 miles, the trail splits and we headed to the summit of Mount Webster, which offers stunning views of Crawford Notch below. From Mount Webster, we followed the Webster Cliff Trail (also the Appalachian Trail) to Mount Jackson. The hike is generally moderate, but culminates in a steep climb to the summit, which is a broad, open area with 360-degree views. On a clear day like we had, you can see Mount Washington to the northeast and the various peaks of the Presidential Range stretching out. From Jackson, we descended on the other branch of the Webster Jackson Trail back down to the trailhead on Route 302.

The total hike is just over 6 miles in length with about 2,300 feet of elevation gain along the way. The hike is difficult, with steep and rocky spots making up much of the hike.

Together since 1997, we’ve spent a good part of those years in the great outdoors and on the trail. Today we work, live and play in the Catskill Mountains, but over the years, we’ve been all over the northeast US! Moe thru hiked the Appalachian Trail ('16), and has also thru hiked the Long Path, Northville-Placid Trail, and Cohos Trail. Jeff's got some thru-hiking to catch up on, but has thru hiked the Northville Placid Trail and hiked extensively throughout the northeast.

For us, The Hiker Trash Husbands is an effort to provide positive LGBTQ+ representation in the hiking world. We look forward to showcasing our own hiking adventures as gay hikers, along with finding other queer outdoors folks to highlight and celebrate. Here's to having our Pride Outside!
