Do the groundwork of pinpointing your personal credentials that make you the person others should trust and buy from. See the qualifications you possess that set you apart from others who point only to paper qualifications.

‘Fiona made me see that it’s not a piece of paper that qualifies me to offer my service. I am qualified to offer my homestyling service, because I have a talent to do so.

I have started to believe in ME and can now see myself offering this service. When I discussed my plans with my family and friends last weekend nobody acted surprised at all!

All my life I’ve been passionate about homes and interiors: how they can influence people and how they express the personality of the people that live in them. As long as I can remember I’ve been asked by family, friends and neighbours to give advice regarding their homes, how to position the furniture to make the living room look bigger, what colours to use and what to add to get the “wow” factor.

About a month ago I went through a very difficult period in my private life and contacted Fiona. We talked about my youth and I told her that when I was about 10 years old, I decided to paint my room white (as a contrast to the horrible dark brown 70s wallpaper that was in it). It was just after my father had had a severe accident and nobody could tell whether he would survive or not. He spent months in hospital and the tension at home was unbearable. All I wanted to do was to create a safe place in an insecure world. And it worked. In my perfectly white room (my “sanctuary”) I didn’t feel threatened by the outside world at all. I didn’t stop after I painted my room, but in the following months and years continued with the rest of the house and made sure it became a clutter free, stylish and safe home. It was the only way of helping my family I could think of.

For the first time in years I am really excited. I never thought I could do professionally what comes naturally to me. At first I was worried I wasn’t good enough and needed to get qualified before I could offer this service, but Fiona made me see that it’s not a piece of paper that qualifies me to offer my service. I am qualified to offer my homestyling service, because I have a talent to do so. I have started to believe in ME and can now see myself offering this service. When I discussed my plans with my family and friends last weekend nobody acted surprised at all!

Even though I am good at what I do in HR and make good money, I have decided to quit. I have finally dared to admit to myself that my passion is with homes and interiors and have decided to become a full-time homestylist.

Change is the spur for growth, whether on a personal or professional level. A Chinese proverb I spotted today puts it nicely, A man grows most tired whist standing still.

Over the years I’ve worked with many individuals who have faced traumatic and life-changing events, from bankruptcy and rebuilding a business  to bereavement and rebuilding a life. I’ve seen first-hand how possible it is to not just survive, but thrive, after such events. Professor Stephen Joseph is one of the leading experts in the world on trauma, resilience, and growth. His brilliant new book, What Doesn’t Kill Us shows how we all have the capacity to find meaning and growth in the face of suffering and change, to transform the course of one’s life.

Here’s what he says,  “Psychological studies have shown that adverse life events are often the trigger for problems of depression, anxiety, or post traumatic stress.  What, then, are we to make of the stories of people who have encountered life-threatening illnesses,harrowing natural disasters, or even man-made horrors, and then gone on to tell of how it was a transformational turning point in their lives?  Such stories seem to point to the truth of the Nietzsche’s dictum: ‘what doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger’.

But are these merely the voices of the lucky few? Or can psychological trauma really have a silver lining for all of us?  Surprisingly, the answer seems to be yes.”

Those who thrive after trauma did the following three things:

1/ Confronted reality rather than deny it.

2/ Accepted that misfortune has occurred, rather than submit to it cheerfully.

3/ Took responsibility for how they live their lives in the aftermath, rather than blame themselves for their fate.

‘Wow! Wow! Wow! Thanks a million for that wonderful session today.  You really threw me in a good way. I was shaken up and woken up and now I am very excited!

I have come through a traumatic few years that have changed my life. I was involved in a serious car accident in 2006. I had been a very active person with a successful career in education and training.  Running was my passion.  I had just run the Connemara Half Marathon two weeks prior to the accident.  My life was turned upside down.

I could not run anymore and I was in a lot of pain. The body I knew was gone. This experience changed me from the inside out but I made a full recovery against the medical odds and ran the Connemara Half Marathon once more on the 1 April 2012. I was now at the stage where I was able to work  full time again. But as I got better and better I realised that I had changed so much on the inside that I did not want to go back to the work I was doing. I did not know how to approach a new career. I had my first session with Fiona a few weeks ago. She got me to look at the message from the trauma I went through and how I managed my recovery and how I could take that message and help others who are going through trauma and change of all types. Fiona has got me to combine what I have learnt from my experience along with my training and education background. Now I see that I can have a business helping others using the message from my personal experience and professional background. It’s early days but for the first time I have a vision for my career that I am passionate about and I am getting to work on allowing it to happen. 5 STRATEGIES TO MASTER CHANGE

Trust me, this mindset shift can sweep in momentous change to your life, literally overnight. I’ve seen this countless times in my own life and with my private clients.  I want to share with you  5 strategies to ensure you are  embracing the biggest challenge of our times – CHANGE!

This is a mindset shift that is so subtle you could easily not see it. Yet, it is so utterly fundamental to how we approach change and in particular, major change. And, nowadays, for many of you, major change in how you live and navigate your way in the world, is what you are having to face.

Your change could be in the area of work, where so very often, people cling on to a job they loath because it pays the bills, dreading each and every Monday morning, wishing the day away, resisting the challenge of change that’s nudging them to tell the truth and look for another, more truthful, more creative and courageous way to live. Or, it could be in the area of relationships, where a marriage has run its course, suffocating one or both parties and neither party will tell the truth and face up to change.

Resisting change is a human tendency that we all have. It’s so much a part of our nature that we don’t even recognise it as something to overcome – it’s potentially our biggest blindspot, an automatic, knee-jerk reaction to change, to anything that threatens the status quo. Homeostasis, a trait all human beings possess to one extent or another, is (in psychological terms) the tendency to live with existing conditions and avoid change.

CHANGE

My message to you is change your attitude to change. Don’t fear change; embrace it as one of the most exciting aspects of life. Think of change as your opportunity to grow, because that is exactly what it is. It’s your chance to evolve and that is what we are all here to do and we are all being given plenty of opportunities to do that in our present challenging times. I want the change that you face now, today and in the future to be the making of a greater, bolder, bigger you, so that you pull more out of you to rise to the occasions. I want you to run towards Change when you see it coming, not runfrom it, as so many do, ducking and diving and hoping to avoid it. These days, there are no hiding places. The best option is to come out and face change head on, with a willing mind and courageous heart.

I know this to be true in my own life. Change, and sometimes, dramatic change, has been a huge part of my life from a young age growing up in the thick of ‘the Troubles’ in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s.  I acquired the habit of welcoming change as a route to progress and advance my present situation and future.

Momentous change comes about as a consequence of a profound internal shift, a YES! within YOU to change, a giving-up of the struggle and resistance to it and an ‘allowing’ of a forwards momentum to begin in your life. We’re all familiar with the quote from Goethe:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back– the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can  do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

CHOOSE CHANGE: 5 Strategies to MASTER Change!

1/ CHOOSE your attitude. Choose change. Choose growth. Make your motto, Make a decision and take action.

2/ Go deeper. Go deep within to reach for your intuition and gut instincts. Recession breeds resourcefulness. Dig deep for yours.

4/ Make Change HAPPEN. Don’t merely get good at handling it when it presents itself or it thrown at you. MAKE it happen.
