took a culture hike with a hawaiian medicine man couple of weeks ago and he has been using the spring for over 40 years and has water rights to this spring since 1976.

On mid-Summer eve and the Friday before Lammas — August 1 is Lammas Day (loaf-mass day), the festival of the first wheat harvest of the year — hundreds of pilgrims used to visit Struell. The earliest written reference to the wells is in 1306, but none of the surviving buildings is earlier than about 1600.

The site is traditionally associated with St. Patrick, who is supposed to have come from nearby Saul to bathe in the waters. Legend has it that he blessed the wells and that he used to spend a great part of the night standing in the water singing psalms and spiritual songs. These wells are almost certain to have been the fountain, Slan, mentioned in Saint Fiacc’s hymn of St. Patrick.

Even today people come to Struell Wells seeking cures.

24/7 a standpipe with good flow. The road through the village is very narrow and not good parking next to the spring but the villagers seem very proud of their spring and tolerant of those who come for water.

Spring is located between mile marker 199 and 198 (approximate) about 7 miles south of Florence. If heading south of Florence on Hwy 101 then start looking on the on the left after the Siltcoos recreation center. There’s a pullout on the right that you can pull off the road and then turn around and go to the pullout on the left and you’ll see the sign saying “Siltcoos Reacreation Area next 4 miles” sign. Spring is located 15 feet off the road in the woods. Spring is a lot easier to find heading north on hwy 101. Start looking for the Siltcoos Recreation sign after County Line road on the right. Look for the sign in the pictures.
