Seven Tips To Improve Your iPhone Battery Life

So you got an iPhone on Christmas. With all of the new features including great games, GPS tracking, and 3G speeds, you may have noticed that the battery life is not quite long. However, you can still get the most out of your 3G iPhone by following these steps to enhance battery life.

1. WiFi constantly consumes battery, even while in your pocket. Turn WiFi scanning off, or turn Wifi off completely. Although Wifi eats up less battery than the 3G radio and the EDGE radio, it does consume it all the time. By keeping WiFi off, you will dramatically improve your battery.

2. Lower the brightness of the screen. The iPhone 3G has a bright screen with warm colors, so its ok if you make it a little less bright. Best is to keep it at the 10-15% mark.

3. Turn off the vibrator in games. Keep in mind that every sound or movement your iPhone 3G makes eats a little battery. Also if you are already running low on battery, keep in mind that 3D games consume more battery than 2D games or games with a more static screen, so play those instead.

4. Set the auto-lock feature to 1 minute by going in settings -> general –> autolock. After you done using the iPhone, the screen will continue to glow. Thus by setting the auto-lock to 1 minute, you can reduce the wasted screen time and maximize the battery life.

5. Keep the 3G speeds and abilities for important calls, big downloads, or browsing the internet, and turn it off otherwise, as this also consumes a lot of your battery. Go to settings -> general -> network, and turn the 3G radio off.

6. If you are traveling by air and have a long flight, you may use the iPhone apps or watch a movie you downloaded earlier, but it is quite unlikely that while flying at 30,000 feet, you will not get any signal for using data or phone calls, so why waste any power? Go to Settings -> Airplane Mode -> On or Off. This function was created specifically for this situation so use it.

7. By setting the push settings to manual or to fetch data at higher intervals, you can save up on your battery life. Push feature allows your email to be updated automatically as your email server receives it. But if you don’t mind just checking it manually every once in a while, than this could save some more battery. Go to settings -> fetch new data -> switch off push and set your fetch to every thirty minutes or an hour or even manual so it will only check your email server when you choose to.

We all assume that any voice call we make over the mobile phone would be secure, and it will be impossible for anyone to eavesdrop on a conversation, with the exception of the powered authorities of course.

However, this has now been proved false. Most of the mobile phone calls are protected by a 21 yr old GSM algorithm, which has recently been decrypted by a computer scientist.

Karsten Nohl, a German computer engineer, recently declared that he has managed to decode the GSM code, which is used to encrypt virtually all the world’s digital mobile phone calls.

According to the engineer, he has done this to point out the weaknesses in the security of global wireless systems. During the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, Nohl said that “this shows that existing GSM security is inadequate.”

The GSM Association in London, which has devised the algorithm, claims that Knol’s efforts are illegal and exaggerate the security threat to wireless phone calls.

Claire Cranton, who is the spokesperson for the GSM Association, said that although this may be theoretically possible but practically it is quite unlikely.

Knol said that the algorithm’s code book is available on the internet through services such as BitTorrent, however, he declined to give a web link to the code book due to fear of legal implications.

Recent news is that the technology company, Apple, is ready to launch a new, touch-sensitive mini-laptop, probably named as the iSlate, possibly as soon as next month.

There are hopes that the launch of the new device could do the same for the ebook and netbook, what iPhone did to mobile phones, i.e. become the sole leader of the market.

This anticipation has pushed shares in the company to a record high of $209.06 on December 24, up 3.4pc on the day alone. The shares have more than doubled in the past year.

According to resources, the company is planning to launch a successor to the iPhone, a product that sits between an iPod Touch and a laptop, playing movies and music and serving some of the traditional functions of a mobile computer.

There have also been several reports that the company has held discussions with various newspaper groups, saying that it plans for the device to be used as a mobile news source.

The company has already had a marvelous year, recording a 47pc jump in the net income in its most recent quarter to $1.7bn (£1.1bn), on revenue of $36.5bn, in spite of the fact that the company failed to launch any major products in the period.

The tablet device is said to arrive by late-March or April.
