Laser Acupuncture Centre is a complementary healthcare clinic where we
not only address and treat disorders, but at the same time ensure our
patients well-being with the cutting-edge Laser technology. The new
philosophy of east meets west where art is integrated with technological
science. We strongly believe that whether it arises from 'hardware' or
'software' of the body dysfunctions, which is the key to recovery. Apart
from the employment of modern technology, the discovery of the quantum
theory has enabled us with higher efficiency of Photonic Bio-Energetic
Medicine Applications to meet, or exceed the demanding healthcare
challenges of today. The 21st Century Medications, with its advanced
technological diagnostic instrumentation and therapy will offer the best
of both worlds for the benefit of our patients.

What is Laser Acupuncture?

Laser Acupuncture is a treatment where special light (Photon) is used to
achieve the effects of the traditional Acupuncture without the use of
the needle and moxa. It is used to treat different ailments and to
balance the various functions of the body system.

Why is Laser Acupuncture Effective?

Laser Acupuncture is effective as we use two (2) very powerful systems
of healing to give patients the optimum benefits of treatment.

Can you combine Traditional Acupuncture and Laser Acupuncture?

Yes, Laser Acupuncture is an alternative to the Traditional Acupuncture
and complementary to allopathic medicine. Laser Acupuncture is safe,
hygienic, and 100% painless as compared to Traditional Acupuncture,
which is a form of invasive treatment. Its effects are also felt
immediately after each session. With these benefits, it is little wonder
why Laser Acupuncture it is gaining immense popularity.

Light energy, like sunlight, is a very important source of energy.
Without sunlight no living organism can survive and our body will not be
able to produce Vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphors. In the
early days, sunlight was used to treat Skin tuberculosis. Without
sunlight, plants cannot have photosynthesis, which will result in little
or no agriculture to produce food for the population.

How does Laser Acupuncture work?

The photon is absorbed by the cellular membranes and its absorption
causes bio-chemical, electric and energetic actions to take place. It
acts on the sympathetic, para-sympathetic & central nervous system
to release chemical & neurotransmitters of dopamine, serotonin &
endorphin etc. Its mechanism of action is such that the cells absorb
the laser energy, which increases kinetic energy within the cells, as
well as oxygen intake. This improves micro-circulation within the blood
cells and aids to regulate any imbalanced state of the body.

What is Traditional Acupuncture?

Traditional Acupuncture is one of the therapeutic methods of Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) with more than 5,000 years of proven history of
treatment. It consists of 2 modalities, i.e. the Needle (Magnetic) and
the Moxa Roll (Electric) which comprises of the Moxa leaves. It is used
simultaneously to balance the Negative (Yin) and Positive (Yang) ions
in the Body System. This is an example of invasive therapy. Due to the
detrimental effects of second hand smoke, the use of Moxa Rolls in
Clinics is limited. The Needle is used to synergise with the Moxa roll
and is good for chronic conditions.

What is the difference between Laser and Traditional Acupuncture?

Laser Acupuncture is 100% painless due to its non invasive nature.
Traditional Acupuncture is an Invasive Therapy where only Licensed
Acupuncturists are allowed to treat Patients. In Laser Acupuncture, we
make use of the painless light energy of the Laser whereas in
Traditional Acupuncture, needles and moxa rolls are used for the
treatment.

In order to achieve optimum effect and harmonise the efficiency of the
treatment, the 2 modalities of Traditional Acupuncture must be used
simultaneously, that is the needle and moxa roll. In needle puncture,
it produces a Magnetic effect (Yin), and an electric effect (Yang) is
produced in moxibustion.

In Laser Acupuncture, the energy emitted by the laser is a beam of
intense pure light. This laser light serves as an electromagnetic wave
which consists of 2 components, i.e. a Magnetic Wave (Yin) perpendicular
to the Electric Wave (Yang). This fulfils the effect of Traditional
Acupuncture without the use of the Moxa Modality.

Therefore, the effect of balance and harmony is conveniently achieved
with Laser Acupuncture. This is important because not all the cellular
structures in the cell membranes are hypo functional or hyper functional
at any one time. Thus, Laser Acupuncture is able to effectively
harmonise the cells in our body system, and at the same time, regulate
the circulatory function.

How effective is the Laser Acupuncture?

The beauty about Laser Acupuncture is that the treatment can be
quantified. The efficiency of Laser Acupuncture is governed primarily
by certain variables such as its output power, time of treatment,
wavelength, beam spot size and the location of the acupoints or area
selected for treatment. With the above criteria matching the
dysfunction, the result is remarkable and can be felt immediately within
the 1st session in most cases. For aesthetic reasons, painless Laser
Acupuncture can be applied to allow an individual to undergo a
‘Makeover’ for any occasion.

Is Laser Acupuncture Painful?

No. As mentioned on several occasions earlier, Laser Acupuncture is a
form of non-invasive acupuncture and is 100% painless. The treatment
experience varies by individual health status. For a person with
deficiency condition, the patient may not experience any sensations,
especially for the 1st session but it does not mean there is no effect.
Some feel a slightly or numbing sensation, because the laser photons
are absorbed by the cells to promote the micro-circulation and
restoration of the body functions.

How Mr. Rodney Lim being an Electronics Engineer becomes a Healthcare Practitioner?

This is all how it began, after completing his National Service in the
then Ministry of Defence, Mr Lim was attracted to join the Ship building
industry at that time which was a Sunrise industry. However, he was
offered a 5-year Traineeship course in Audio, Video¸CCTV, Broadcasting
& Color Television Engineering with Rediffusion (S) Pte Ltd. The
Compay was the only private Cable Audio Broadcasting Company in
Singapore after Radio & Television Singapore (RTS). He completed
the Traineeship course in 3 years and was promoted to Trainee Engineer
working in various Engineering Departments.

One can say that he was ‘born’ in Rediffusion where he received most of
his practical training. He had also won a Scholarship from the Company
to study at the Singapore Polytechnic and was sent to overseas for
Integrated Security Training in Paris, France and in London, UK.

Being with Rediffusion for about 8 years, he left to join Radar Devices,
Inc of USA which was a Manufacturer of Marine Radar Collision Devices
where he handled Marine Radar, Satellite Navigator and Satellite
Communication as a Technical Manager in charge of the Far East Region
were he travelled extensively from Korea down to Indonesia.

Being trained as an Electronics Engineer, he handled various engineering
related work dealing with advanced technology. After about 3 years in
the Marine Industry, he left to join a medical company and it was there
that he had picked up the relevant experience but unfortunately the
company reorganisation had led him to be their subcontractor and that
was how he found his own company dealing with Medical equipment.

He discovered the healing powers of lasers in a medical exhibition as
they healed his ankle problem which persisted despite the Allopathic
medicine used before and led to his decision to start their
distribution. He was the pioneer to introduce the Low Level Laser
therapy (LLLT) in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. He attended the
Laser Therapy Course in Space Laser in Italy in 1986 and an “ND YAG
Laser and acupuncture” course in Beijing in1987. As he travelled around
the Asia as required by his job, he also discovered the healing powers
of acupuncture and attended various talks and preceptorships and
received a diploma in Acupuncture in Singapore in1989. He then combined
the 2 main interests and formed the Laser Acupuncture Centre, where he
has the license to practise laser acupuncture using low-power lasers.

In his treatment, he applies a holistic approach to treating his
clients’ medical problems and is based on the eastern medicine’s
meridian energy flow theory. The common issues his patients suffer from
include Smoke Addiction, Sleep Deficiency, Hair Loss, Obesity, Skin
problems. He receives a fair amount of tourists of all races in his
centre. Mr Lim explains, “ At Laser Acupuncture Centre, we troubleshoot
the human body to diagnose the root causes and approach the problems
holistically and focus on natural healing. By applying this philosophy
and channelling these concepts into our treatment, we help the body
recover faster and eliminate pain with the aid of our professional
lasers. The positive feedback we receive is astounding, we only hope
more people will discover our ways of treating the human body.” On top
of that, he also manages another company called Mediline Biolase
Technology, which focuses on the local distribution of internationally
recognised Laser Machinery to medical institutions.

“I’m lucky to have taken up an electronic engineering career,” he
elaborates. “ I went through all kinds of training and technological
changes. I was working within the broadcasting system, then the black
and white tv, then colour tv. The troubleshooting procedures involved
with all these systems have helped me greatly with understanding my
patients’ ailments. My best reward is to see the improved health of my
patients.”

Mr Lim finds many similarities between troubleshooting a broken machine
and a body that is not functioning well. He says: “Similar to a TV, each
part of the body has got its control function. Once you know which part
controls what function, it’s easy to identify the source of the
problem simply judging by the symptoms of pain or appearance”. He agrees
that his background experience in engineering has helped him
tremendously in his quest to “troubleshoot” the human body and treat the
probem at its root.

29 November 2006
Wednesday, 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Library@Orchard (Level 5, Ngee Ann City)

Laser Acupuncture: When Traditional Acupuncture Is Redefined
Are you afraid of needles?
Traditional acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique that involves
the insertion of fine needles just under the skin in specific points
according to a mapping of 'energy pathways' to relieve pain and treat a
wide variety of complaints. The World Health Organisation has recognised
acupuncture's ability to treat many medical conditions ranging from
neurological to gastrointestinal to mental and emotional ones.
But have you heard of laser acupuncture?
Laser acupuncture uses one to fourteen laser needles that are not
inserted in the skin but simply applied to the acupuncture points to
help alcoholic addictions, reduce weight and to manage sports injuries.
Find out how different it is from traditional acupuncture and how effective it can be in solving your health problems with Rodney Lim from the Laser Acupuncture Centre.
This talk is brought to you by The Living Room at Library@Orchard.

Here are some pictures of the event:

Healthcare reform may include alternative medicine therapy language. In a
recent town hall meeting in St. Louis, MO, President Obama noted that
he supports acupuncture. A licensed acupuncturist noted that the
National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization have
“discovered through their studies that alternative medicine is often
more cost-effective and very effective”. The President replied, “it is
pretty well documented through scientific studies that acupuncture, for
example, can be very helpful in relieving certain things like migraines
and other ailments — or at least as effective as more intrusive
interventions”. He also discussed the challenges of integrating
preventative medicine into policy making noting that the new Secretary
of Health and Human Service, Kathleen Sebelius, former governor of
Kansas, is charged with the task of implementing effective healthcare
solutions.

Acupuncture first received national attention in 1972 when President
Nixon went to China and New York Times reporter James Reston
successfully received acupuncture resulting in successful post-operative
pain control. In 1997, the US National Institutes of Health published a
report supporting the safety and effectiveness of acupuncture
treatments for a wide range of healthcare issues. Under the Clinton
administration, the White House Commission on Complementary and
Alternative Medicine Policy was formed and The National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) became part of the US
National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS).

U.S. News and World Report’s Health Day section had a fascinating
article in the August issue entitled, “Imaging Sheds Light on How
Acupuncture Works”

The writers acknowledge that acupuncture has become increasingly popular
in the U.S. and cites a study published in the September issue of
NeuroImage that concludes that acupuncture eases pain by regulating key
receptors in the brain.

Acupuncture increases the binding availability of mu-opioid receptors in
regions of the brain that process and weaken pain signals. "The
increased binding availability of these receptors was associated witlach
reductions in pain," said Richard Harris, a researcher at the
University of Michigan.

By directly stimulating these chemicals, acupuncture can affect the
brain's long-term ability to regulate pain, the study found. The
researchers used PET scans to examine 20 women with "undefined"
fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition. The women took no new
medications for their pain during the study period.

The Primo System (Meridians explained)

CLASSICAL ACUPUNCTURE MERIDIANS DISCOVERED IN 1960S BY PROF. KIM BONG HAN

The Primo system as a novel circulatory system corresponding to
classical acupuncture meridians was discovered in the early 1960’s by
Bonghan Kim. Despite its potential importance in biology and medicine,
it has been ignored or forgotten for a long time. Only recently have
most of its significant parts, such as the Primo system inside blood or
lymph vessels, on the surfaces of internal organs, and in brain
ventricles, been confirmed.

Subsystem of Primo system

The primo-vascular system was proposed as an anatomical circulatory
organ containing the anatomical structure of the acupuncture meridian
system, i.e., anatomical structure of the meridian was found to be a
part of a larger organ. The primo-vascular system is consisted of several
subsystems; superficial BH system in the skin, intravascular BH system
inside large blood and lymphatic vessels, organ-surface BH system on the
surfaces of various internal organs and neuro BH system associated with
the nervous system.

Bonghan ducts and corpuscles

The component parts of Bonghan system are Bonghan ducts and Bonghan
corpuscles. The Bonghan corpuscles and ducts can be classified into
several categories, the common structure of which being as follows:

The Bonghan duct is a bundle of very fine Bonghan ductules with a
diameter of 5 – 15um. The wall of the Bonghan ductile is composed of
endothelial cells as in the case of the blood and lymphatic vessels. But
the endothelial cells of the Bonghan ductule are very characteristic.
The endothelial cell nucleus is of rod shape and abundant in chromatin
and the electronic density is so high that its inner composition is
hardly discernible in electron micrographs. The boundary of cytoplasm is
not clear and only rod-shape nuclei arranged in and orderly manner on
the wall of the Bonghan ductule can be seen. The wall of the Bonghan
ductule is very thin; about 0.1 – 0.2 um in electron microscopic
observation. Besides, the Bonghan ductule has outer membrane, which is
composed of argyrophile fiber and outer membrane cells. The outer
membrane cell takes a form similar to smooth muscle and it is presumably
the contractile element of the Bonghan ductule. Several ductules are
bound by a surrounding membrane.

The Bonghan corpuscles are, without exception, linked with Bonghan
ducts. The Bonghan corpuscles are formed through the enlargement,
ramification and anastomosis of Bonghan ductules. The stroma covering
the corpuscles is reticular tissue. This tissue is connected with the
outer membrane of the Bonghan ductules and the surrounding membrane of
the Bonghan ducts. The Bonghan duct contains basophilic granules,
basophilic structures, nucleus-like structures and specific cells. They
are related with the reproduction of formed elements.

Primo-vessel from Dr. Kim

Primo-vessel from Dr. Shin and Dr. Jung

Intravascular Bonghan System

It is a system of Bonghan ducts and corpuscles distributed inside the
blood and lymphatic vessels. Inter-linked Bonghan corpuscles and ducts
are systematically distributed in all the arteries, veins, lymphatic
vessels and in the heart. The inner Bonghan ducts lie freely in the flow
of blood and they are ramified together with blood vessels. The Bonghan
ducts inside the lymphatic vessel are visible from outside. The
structure of the inner bonghan corpuscle with a diameter of 0.1~0.2mm is
similar to a small hematopoietic organ.
As in ithe organs producing erythrocyte, leucocyte and lymphocyte,
serials of their young cells are found in the net eyes of the reticular
structure. The hematopoietic of the inner Bonghan corpuscles has been
confirmed through various experiments. But their function is not
confined to this. Groups of parenchyma cells of the organ and various
other cells, basophilic substance and nucleus-like cells are found in
these corpuscles.

Organ Surface Bonghan System

The organ surface Bonghan system is distributed on the surface of internal organs web-like inside the body.

organ suface primo-vacular system

Fig. 2.3. System of the organ surface Bonghan corpuscle and ducts [1]The
organ surface Bonghan corpuscles and ducts (OSBHCDs) are distributed
around a whole inside body involving the cervical region, the breast,
and the abdominal region. The network of OSBHCDs spread with a rule even
extremely complex. OSBHCDs are connected directly with all internal
organs, endocrine glands, abdominal walls, etc in a somatic cavity. In
anatomically, an OSBHC is a profound Bonghan corpuscle not related to
the pathway of blood and lymphPrtic vessels, and not bound to the
neighboring tissue. OSBHCs are mutually connected by organ surface
Bonghan ducts (OSBHD). The corpuscles are connected either to two ducts
at its two ends. The size of the corpuscles is about 0.2~1.0 mm. An
OSBHC is usually connected to 2 ~ 7 Bonghan ducts, and the corpuscle are
spindle-shaped or polygonal amorphous, semi-transparent, milky or
slightly red. The corpuscles connected to two ducts at its two ends are
spindle-shaped or oval. A corpuscle and cross at a point wrapped by
connective tissue.

Innovation Technology in
Laser Acupuncture makes
Beauty Treatment
more effective

Combined treatment of Gold with Laser Acupuncture in Beauty skin care.
This is the first time where fine Acupuncture needles are used in
treatment with Laser Therapy. In these days with innovation Technology
of Beauty treatment, Acupuncture functions in a way that traditional
healing is introduced in combination with using Laser.

Aware of Technological development and advances in Treatment,
Acupuncture also experienced in transformation, owner of Dii Laila
Beauty, Mdm Roselty Mohd Saleh, offers the treatment of Laser
Acupuncture to overcome chronic problems in the beauty.

As for Laser Acupuncture treatment, this should be done at Laser Acupuncture Centre at Parklane Shopping Mall at Selegie Road.

Mdm Roselty works with Mr Rodney Lim who is also her friend for more than 20 years who offers her Laser Acupuncture treatment.

“Customers initially see me and if I find out their condition such as
Acne, chronic Facial breakouts or severe Pigmentation, I will refer to
Laser Acupuncture Centre for treatment”. Once completed, the customer
will come back to me to continue their Facial Beauty treatment at
Kembangan Plaza.

At our Centre, customers will go through Facial treatment using
machine. Mdm Roselty with 35 years experience in the Beauty treatment
said that when Gold is combined with Laser Acupuncture, the treatment
can be used to help grow skin tissues.
She offers packages costing $250 for treatment including Laser
Acupuncture.

Mr Lim said Laser Acupuncture is a modality apart from Beauty Skin care
is also used by Doctors to treat chronic Pain Management such as Low
Back Pain, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow, High Blood Pressure, Diabetic,
Stroke, Heart Disease, Cholesterol in addition to Anti-ageing &
Skin Rejuvenation.

Mr Lim explained the principle of Laser and Classical Acupuncture
treatment is based on the concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Principles in achieving the Harmony and the coordination of Balance in
body function.

Research shows its efficacy in coordinating the harmonious functions of
the Circulatory, Digestive, Kidney, Endocrine and Lymphatic systems etc
will improve their Skin and overall general health.
The advantage of Laser Technology in this treatment is that it saves
time, does not cause pain, infection, no cause of muscle movement,
safety and the Dosage of Laser Energy can be quantified with no side
effects.

Laser works by stimulating certain Acupoints of the Meridians. The
Acupoints are located all over our Body with Peripheral nerves close to
the central nervous systems and the emitted Laser energy will provide
stimulus and impulses transfer through the spinal cord to the Brain to
release the Neurotransmitters and Hormones to promote healing.
In fact, the Laser light energy travels faster than Magnetic energy with
higher efficacy than the Classical Acupuncture. Those interested can

Healing Hands: Mr Rodney Lim

Healing Hands

Frankly, my journey towards becoming a registered acupuncturist has been
one that has been made possible by the divine. Prior to becoming a
registered acupuncturist, I had been involved in engineering at
Rediffusion, a broadcasting station, as well as a medical company. It
was through these undertakings that I had built a foundation in
technical skills and subsequently became a technical manager at Radar
Devices, Inc (RDI), where I was responsible for sourcing distributors
for the company from Korea down to Indonesia.

Three years into the job, I decided to marry my interest in technology
with the work that I have learned to be proficient in, and began to look
for product distribution. It was through a chance opportune that I
discovered the benefits of laser, and how it works wonder as a great
modality for pain, rehabilitation and physiotherapy. When my condition
of ankle oedemas got healed, against the better judgement of allopathic
doctors who could do nothing to alleviate the pain & discomfort. I
was all the more convinced with the benefits of laser.

This was how I started to distribute laser and even attended a series of
laser therapy courses and overseas trainings in Europe to better
understand the science behind this product.

In Singapore, my medical company Mediline Biolase Technology was the
first to introduce the use of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – something
that made news on radio and TV. Thereafter, all the major hospitals in
Singapore started to use our products in their treatments. Shortly
after, the product was introduced to Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
To create greater awareness of our products, we also participated in
many medical exhibitions, conferences, as well as seminars, both at home
and abroad.
It was not until I tried to introduce LLLT to Chinese physicians for
pain relief treatments that I became acquainted with Chinese physician
Mr. W. H. Chew, who turned out to be the President of the Singapore
Acupuncture Association. Under his influence, I developed an interest in
acupuncture and decided to pursue this field in my career.

In 1988, I graduated in Clinical Acupuncture from the School of Acupuncture.

With a rise in the use of lasers in conventional medicine, and having
witnessed its efficacy with my own eyes, I was confident that it could
be used as a modality to naturally treat the human body of pain and
without the side effects of drugs. Through my studies, I recognised the
similarities in the pain-relieving mechanism of lasers and acupuncture.
Convinced that there is healing in the two put together, I decided to
start a laser acupuncture centre.

Reaching Out to Others

Through my business, I have developed a better understanding on how the
human body functions and learned more about pain management. As a health
caregiver, I strive to do my best to help my patients heal through
natural treatments, especially when their allopathic or mainstream
doctors can only recommended surgery for them to recover.

To help patients better appreciate the power of acupuncture, I even
conducted my own research on its effect and inform my patients of such.
In my research, I bring to attention the efficacy of Classical
Acupuncture, which
consists of two modalities namely the needle (Yin), as well as Moxa, a
herbal roll (Yang), which is not usually used this day. In my research, I
acupunctured on papayas and found that the treatments helped delay the
process of aging, or rather ripening of the fruit. In addition, the
papayas ripened beautifully, on the outside to inside and tasted very
sweet with fresh juicy texture.

In the course of running my business, it is important for me to be aware
of our happenings so that I can plan my marketing strategies
accordingly. For example, when I found out that acupuncture has helped
Mariah Carey conceive, I started to focus my marketing efforts on
promoting women’s wellness through laser acupunctural packages. When it
comes to keeping up with competition, I find it most effective to create
another services to match their budget accordingly. Being well-read and
resourceful also helped me generate ideas and come up with new ways to
make my business one-of-a-kind and successful.

To me, leaving a good impression on first time customers is very
important as word of mouth is one of the most effective advertising
modes. But that aside, we also rely on marketing campaigns through our
website – a cost effective way to promote my company’s presence since it
is a 24 hours by 7 days site that enables people to make enquiry as and
when they like. Other means of advertising avenues include Facebook,
the medical services directory in newspapers, as well as through
networking.

By effectively reaching out to others through the course of my
profession, success can be achieved when I can share my knowledge with
them, and when they benefit from my services and then tell others about
me.

Insights into My Business

On hindsight, my success is the result of turning my hobby into my work.
My success is also necessarily the fruits of my patience, perseverance
and passion. Finally, my success is made possible as I make myself
available to learn from others.

To date, one of my greatest success, as well as milestones in my career,
took place in May 2007, when I was earmarked the first in Singapore to
use laser in acupunctural treatments.

As I continue to pursue my interest and grow my business, it is my hope
to set up a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital that operates
very much like an allopathic hospital.

Rodney Lim is an electronic engineer by training before he embarked to
work in the medical field of TCM and painless laser acupuncture.

He founded Laser Acupuncture Centre in 1988 and pioneered the use of
laser in acupunctural treatments in Singapore. He is often referred by
his friend as a 'Techno-Acupuncturist' as he had applied his technical
knowledge in trouble-shooting the human body. He was also a Chartered
Member of the International Laser Therapy Association, UK in 1991.

Rodney received the Singapore Book of Records Awards for being the first
to use Laser for Acupuncture in 2007! He believes that painless laser
energy is one of the 21st century solutions to the healthcare needs in
our community.
