View Vimeo Videos or other sites blocked in India

Last month many of you must have typed www.vimeo.com in your favourite browser to view videos of your choice. But as soon as you clicked the play button, nothing happened.

The same thing happened to me and I wondered whether my Airtel broadband was working or not. After searching a little bit I was able to find out the reason for Vimeo’s videos were not playing. An Indian court order made sure that any site hosting copyrighted material illegally has to be blocked by Indian ISPs.

So in compliance with the court’s order, our law-abiding ISPs promptly blocked these websites. But not every video on these sites are infringement of copyright law. Anyway, let’s try and find a way to not only play Vimeo videos but also access other blocked sites.

The easiest way is to download and use freeware to browse your favourite sites. You can download it from HERE. Once downloaded, simply unzip the file and run the exe file. Once the program runs, it will open your default browser (in my case Internet explorer).

Use your default browser to view the blocked sites. As an example, following are two snapshot of Vimeo video. In first image, video does not play even after clicking the play button

Using Ultrasurf, you can browse blocked sites by your ISP. Happy Browsing

How to write in Hindi on Facebook or anywhere else.

Internet’s penetration in India is increasing exponentially and so is the need for communicating in one’s own language. Information and thoughts are easily exchanged if expressed in one’s own language. With the diversity of India, English became a common language of conversation between speakers of different languages and schooling in most parts of India is done in English. Still a large population converse in their mother-tongue and there is no reason why they should not do the same over the web. With the advent of social networking sites like Facebook, the need of typing in one’s language has increased.
I have already shown you a way on how to write in Hindi (or for that matter in many other Indian languages) here. I am going to show you another way of typing in Hindi (or other supported Indian languages).
Thanks to Google Transliteration IME, we can easily write in may India languages i.e. Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu.

All you have to do is go to Google Transliteration IME

Select your desired language

click Download Google IME.

Then Install the downloaded file.

To display the Language bar all you have to do is in desktop, right click on tool bar and select Toolbars -> Language bar.

If the 'Language bar' option is not visible in 'Toolbars', then it needs to be enabled through control panel:
In Windows 7/Vista

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Keyboard and Languages tab
Click on Change keyboards... button to open Text services and input languages dialog
Navigate to Language Bar tab
Enable the radio button Docked in the taskbar under Language Bar section
Apply all settings and try to display language bar as mentioned earlier by right clicking on tool bar and select Toolbars -> Language bar.

In Windows XP

Go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> Text services and input languages (Details) -> Advanced Tab
Make sure that under System configuration, option Turn off advanced text services is NOT checked.
Go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> Text services and input languages (Details) -> Settings Tab
Click Language Bar
Select Show the Language bar on the desktop. Click OK.
If you are installing the IME for East Asian language or Right-To-Left language, go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages Tab
Make sure that options Install files for complex scripts and right to left languages and Install files for East Asian languages are checked in the checkboxes. This requires installation of system files and the system will prompt to insert the Operating System Disc.
Apply all settings and try to display language bar as mentioned earlier by right clicking on tool bar and select Toolbars -> Language bar.

To switch between English <=> Hindi, you can press Shift + Alt.
Using this method you can type in almost any application.

Slow Browsing on Nokia Smartphones using WLAN through Dlink 2730 or 2750U Wifi Router

I have earlier posted the on how to configure Dlink 2750U wifi router for Airtel broadband connection. Now after having configured this router and taken care of security settings etc.; when I started using my Nokia 5800 smartphone for browsing, I could feel the slowness of browsing speed. I searched for a solution and finally found one. Here I am going to share the same with you.

So for all those who are experiencing slow browsing with Nokia phones; all they have to do is go to http://192.168.1.1 and give login and password (default login/password is admin/admin)

Now Click on Wireless and then on Advance. Final configuration should be as shown below:-

That is

WMM(Wi-Fi Multimedia): Enabled
WMM No Acknowledgement: Enabled
WMM APSD: Disabled

Click Apply/Save. Now browsing on your Nokia phone should be fast.

Configure D-Link 2750U Wi-Fi Router for Airtel

For the past Seven years I have been a user of Airtel Broadband and have faced problem 3 times. Two times it was because of ADSL2+ modem and they sent the engineer promptly (Probably a perk of living in Delhi) . First time the problematic modem was replaced (from 220BXi to 110BXi) but on second time (May 2012) I was told that I would have to buy the modem myself as Airtel now does not support CPEs(customer premises equipment).

So after some searching on net I decided to buy Dlink 2750U; which has in-built ADSL2+ modem with 4 LAN port, 1 USB port and 1 RJ11(DSL) port to connect your ADSL line; from Flipkart. As a side note, I must say that delivery of Flipkart is just amazing.

The box contains everything you need to connect your ADSL connection. I connected the ADSL line from splitter to DSL port, LAN port of PC to LAN port of the router and switched it ON.

Now let’s start the process of configuring the router. Though a configuration CD was provided with the router, it seems that it does not work with Windows 7. So I will show you the manual configuration, which is pretty simple.

Open the properties of your LAN card, Select Internet Protocol Version 4, then Properties and the give IP Address as shown.

After configuring the IP address, open Internet Explorer and in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1

A window will open and will ask for Login and Password

Following is the first page you will see.

Now click Advance Setup on left and the click ADD button on right.

On the next screen put value of VPI as 1 and VCI as 32. And other values as shown below.

Now click WAN Services and click ADD button.

Then

After rebooting the modem should come online and you should be able to browse.

Tweak your Aspire – Template images gone

Aspire is one of the most appealing blogger templates I have encountered. It was developed by Infocreek which unfortunately is now no more. Though it can still be downloaded at BTemplates. Though the template works, but the image files need to correctly show template in it’s full glory are missing.

And the culprit is the original image hosting site where the files related to Aspire template were stored. There are 30 gif/jpg files that make up this beautiful template. All these files were stored on www.webpagedesign.ws/aspire, but now it is not available. So let’s get to work and save our beautiful template.

The basic idea is to host all these 30 image files to a site that does not go down in a hurry and then link these up in our template. What better way to host these images on one of Google’s own site called Google Sites. Now since you have google account (You are using blogger…Right:), simply login into the site.

Create a website.

Give your site some unique name.

Then select the options as shown and click to create. I have named my page pics (how original!!!). My advice keep it pics as it will help in next steps.

Now add all the 30 files to this page.

Once done note down the url of the pics. If you have created the page pics, then the url should look like :

https://sites.google.com/site/YYYYYY/pics/crack.jpg

(Replace the YYYYYY with your site name)

Now go to your Blog => Template

=> Edit HTML

=> Click Proceed

=> Expand Widget Template

Select the template and copy paste it to Notepad and SAVE it. If anything goes wrong, you will be able to “copy & Paste” it back.

Now again copy & Paste to notepad (as a new file) and replace

http://www.webpagedesign.ws/aspire/

with

https://sites.google.com/site/YYYYYY/pics/

(Replace YYYYYY with your site name)

Now Paste this changed code to your Template editor, Preview the changes. If satisfied, save the template.

Now you have Your favourite template restored to its full Glory.

Tweak Your Aspire – Case of missing “Embedded Comment Form”

About two days back, I received an email by one of my reader Javier Esteban González Andújar and user of “Aspire” template, pointing to the fact that the embedded comment form has stopped working. He is a writer and had won prize for his work under Short Story category (Congrats!!!). He posted the news of his winning on his blog and was expecting Comments from his readers when he found out that the embedded comment form is not there.

So to make things right again especially for him….

When everything was right, this is what embedded comment form looked like

Let’s make things right again.
Click Design => Edit HTML => Expand Widget Templates

Add Reactions Widget to Aspire

I received a comment from Daniel (a visitor on my blog) , on how to enable Reactions on your blog post. The procedure is simple if you are using default template (why would you want to use default template when there are so many beautiful templates floating around).

But We are using one of the best template – Aspire.

So we are going to make it even better….. let’s get our hands dirty, or as dirty as they can get by typing on keyboard…..

First go to Dashboard > Layout > Page Elements.

Now click Edit on Blog Posts.

A new window will open. Now check the box in front of Reactions:

This is just the first step, now save your changes and go to Layout > Edit HTML.

Warning: Make sure to make a backup of your template BEFORE making any changes.

Now find

And just below it add the following code

How to write in Hindi on Facebook

I joined facebook sometime back and I am so happy that I did. I found a lot of my school friends there and now I am addicted to it.

I am from Delhi, India (as are most of my school friends). I started conversing with them in Hindi (most of the time) as I feel that one can express better in his/her mothertongue. Unlike Orkut, Facebook does not support typing in Hindi, so I am presenting here a way to write comments, posts etc using Google's service.

To be able to type in Hindi, you should have Firefox (The Best Browser).

Same Procedure can be used with Internet Explorer. Read my comment no. 26 for changes required for Internet Explorer.

The procedure for different languages remains the same for all the languages as with Hindi.

Right-click on the links below for different languages:

How To Add The Blogger "Read More"

As you might have noticed, I have posted after a long time. It’s been too hot in Delhi and laziness is my second nature… (Yeah! ask my dad). The heat just increased my laziness and gave me another reason to give a pass to my “postings”.

Today, I received a mail by one of my readers as to she can add “Read More” for her posts which were rather long. This mail was reason enough for me to write this post.

This is one of my favorite hacks. It makes your blog’s pages a little easier to read and on slower connections, a little faster to load. If your posts are longer; then this hack presents a way to write summary of the post and then let’s the readers decide whether they want to view that particular post or not. Also the reader is spared the “ordeal” to scroll through your longish post to reach to the next post.

Without further delay, let’s start working.

Backup your blog’s template before making any changes.

Now go to your blog’s Layout => Edit HTML.

Click “Expand Widget Templates”.

Search For

And REPLACE it with the following code.

How to change Favicon in Blogger

So you have got a blog. You have tweaked it’s appearance the way you wanted it. Now your blog has that stamp of your individuality all over it. Right? Think again.

Your blog stands out in all respect, yet it has the most common Favicon you could lay your hands on. Let’s change this.

What is Favicon?

In simple words… This

And we want to change it to this (at least in my case) :)

Now lets get down to change this. A favicon is a 16X16 px ico file. You need to have an ico file(*.ico) which will become your favicon. It can be any image file. Open any image file in IrfanView and then resize the image and save it as ico file. If you are short of ideas, you can head over to huge number of favicon collection.

Now a place to save your favicon online. You can use any online image hosting service or use the Google Sites. Create a site in google sites and then Click on Home as shown.

Then you can upload your ico file to your site

Once uploaded, note down its path. It should be something like this =>

http://sites.google.com/site/YOURSITENAME/Home/FAVICON.ico?attredirects=0

Now go to your blog’s Layout => Edit HTML.

Backup your blog’s template before making any changes.

Now find

Tweak Your Aspire – Numbering Comments

Your Blog is popular, unlike mine :) , and a lot of visitors leave comments on your posts, again unlike mine, do you wish you could number the comments. Numbering comments have lots of advantages.

First “It looks Cool” and that’s hot.

It gives you permalink to your comment, which can be given in other posts.

So lets start the project……

Go to Layout => Edit HTML and then click “Expand Widget Templates”.

Now search for

and just above this copy and paste the following code

Tweak Your Aspire – Show your blog’s Description

This blog post is inspired by a problem faced by one of my reader. He has a blog about Philately and has text scrolling at the end of the page. What he wanted to do is to have that text scrolling at the top. The shortest and easiest possible answer to his problem was to have his message as blog’s description. But somehow Aspire does not show Description.

Yipeeeee, another addition to my (gradually) increasing number of posts.

Before doing anything with your template Please Backup Your Template.

As I have already told you… Aspire does not show your post’s Description. So first we will tackle this problem.

First search for

Just below it add

<h2><data:description/></h2>

So the final code should look something like

Many of them cap the download speed, Use Captcha or waiting period or a combination of these methods. This still makes their service attractive to all those who don’t want to register (pay) thus keeping them “in the running” and also lures people to register (pay) at these sites if they don’t want to encounter these “obstacles”. To overcome these restrictions; sometimes partially; there are several programs, standalone as well as plugins.

One of my favorite standalone program is CryptLoad about which I have already HERE. But today I will write about an Add-in for Firefox called SkipScreen. Though out on 2 April 2009, I was able to find it about a week later.

This is what a part of their web page looks like, telling us about its feature.

I, as usual, installed it and started to test it. First I downloaded a file from Rapidshare. I simply clicked on the link and SkipScreen took over. Though it was not able to bypass the mandatory wait time limit, the rest was taken care of.

Next came Megaupload. Megaupload first presented me with a captcha. SkipScreen was not able to fill the captcha. So after manually filling the captcha, SkipScreen almost instantly started downloading the file, bypassing the wait time!!

MediaFire- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

DepositFile- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

zShare- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

Sharebee- This site has links to same file but from multiple file sharing sites. SkipScreen automatically chooses the best compatible site from the list and starts the download almost instantly.

In conclusion a very good Add-on for Firefox to have if you download from multiple file sharing sites. A must have in addition to Cryptload.

Tweak Your Aspire – Add Comment Form below Post

Continuing my “Tweak Aspire” series is another useful addition. Placement of “Comments Form” at the end of the post so that it becomes easier for everyone to add comments our post instead of being taken to a new page for adding comments or having a popup opening up.

Let’s start the process of enabling the Comments Form below Post. But first a word of Caution.

Always backup your template…. Just in case

First go to Settings => Comments

And Select Embed Below post.

Now Save and go to Layout => Edit HTML. Here Check Expand Widgets Templates.

Here find the code

And just below this line insert the following code

<b:include data='post' name='comment-form'/>

So that the code looks like

Tweak your Aspire – Show Post Date Correctly

I am again writing it for the benefit of others and also to have some continuity in posts.

Let’s start this small tutorial….

Go to Layout -> Edit HTML

Tweak Your Aspire – Show NavBar and Add Calendar

I have been receiving a lot of mails regarding tweaking of my present theme “Aspire”. Many of you are facing problems in deploying this theme and getting desired results. So to help all those who want to help themselves……

Go to Layout => Edit HTML

Do not Check “Expand Widget Templates”

Now lets start with the Navigation bar at the top.

By Default Navigation Bar is Hidden in this theme. Some of you would want to see the NavBar. So to enable it, you have to change the code as follows:-

Aspire theme Problems

I have been trying to help a lot of people who have been facing problems in Aspire theme.

Now all of you can Post your problems for the blogger version of the theme and I will try to sort it out. Also I will publish first part tomorrow, 13 April 2009 (8:00 PM IST), about code to add a calendar to your blog, like the one I have.

None of the code for the calendar is mine, I have simply copied the code from the net and used it. Thanx to the coder.

I have seen over time that people are facing problem with this theme and as it is a beautiful theme I decided to help those who want to use it. This particular post should be used to put your suggestions and your problems so that I look into those and post the solutions.

Too dormant...... for too long

I know that I have been not updating my posts for far too long period. This inactivity is due to me being very busy with my family and work. I have been getting a lot of mails regarding the theme, Aspire, I am currently using.

I have tweaked it a little bit and the results have been totally satisfying.
I will put majority of the code in a series in the next few days so that you could tweak this theme and get the desired results.

Wishing Indians A Happy Independence Day

15 August 1947

This was the day India became independent and started a very long march to become the largest democratic country in the world. I am a proud Indian wishing every Indian a Happy Independence day. We, as a nation, have achieved much and still there is more to be achieved. Let's work towards making this a better and peaceful country. Independence is a privilege which has to be protected by everyone by being Responsible. The responsibility lies with us to make sure that country progresses, to make sure we don't take this independence for granted and to make sure that we elect persons, to run this country, who are capable and honest and not some one based on caste or religion.

We have to guard our country from enemy, within and outside, if we have to keep enjoying the fruits of Independence. Think about it.
