Add Reactions Widget to Aspire

I received a comment from Daniel (a visitor on my blog) , on how to enable Reactions on your blog post. The procedure is simple if you are using default template (why would you want to use default template when there are so many beautiful templates floating around).

But We are using one of the best template – Aspire.

So we are going to make it even better….. let’s get our hands dirty, or as dirty as they can get by typing on keyboard…..

First go to Dashboard > Layout > Page Elements.

Now click Edit on Blog Posts.

A new window will open. Now check the box in front of Reactions:

This is just the first step, now save your changes and go to Layout > Edit HTML.

Warning: Make sure to make a backup of your template BEFORE making any changes.

Now find

<data:post.body/>

And just below it add the following code

You can customize reactions, but I will leave that to you to play with. And don’t forget to check appropriate box to rate this post.

How to write in Hindi on Facebook

I joined facebook sometime back and I am so happy that I did. I found a lot of my school friends there and now I am addicted to it.

I am from Delhi, India (as are most of my school friends). I started conversing with them in Hindi (most of the time) as I feel that one can express better in his/her mothertongue. Unlike Orkut, Facebook does not support typing in Hindi, so I am presenting here a way to write comments, posts etc using Google's service.

To be able to type in Hindi, you should have Firefox (The Best Browser).

Same Procedure can be used with Internet Explorer.

Right-click this link: [अ Type in Hindi]
Click on "Bookmark This Link".
Choose "Bookmarks Toolbar" in the "Folder" option.

Now you will have a bookmark “Type in Hindi”

Now go to www.google.com and then press “Type in Hindi’ bookmark.

Wait for sometime till you see something like this

Wait some more and you will see

Now type anything in English

Press Spacebar. Do not press Enter

This is what you will get

Now you can search things in Hindi.

Click this bookmarklet while in the Facebook and your comment window will become Hindi enabled !!! Now write Hindi comments right in Facebook.

How To Add The Blogger "Read More"

As you might have noticed, I have posted after a long time. It’s been too hot in Delhi and laziness is my second nature… (Yeah! ask my dad). The heat just increased my laziness and gave me another reason to give a pass to my “postings”.

Today, I received a mail by one of my readers as to she can add “Read More” for her posts which were rather long. This mail was reason enough for me to write this post.

This is one of my favorite hacks. It makes your blog’s pages a little easier to read and on slower connections, a little faster to load. If your posts are longer; then this hack presents a way to write summary of the post and then let’s the readers decide whether they want to view that particular post or not. Also the reader is spared the “ordeal” to scroll through your longish post to reach to the next post.

Without further delay, let’s start working.

Backup your blog’s template before making any changes.

Now go to your blog’s Layout => Edit HTML.

Click “Expand Widget Templates”.

Search For

<p><data:post.body/></p>

And REPLACE it with the following code.

How to change Favicon in Blogger

So you have got a blog. You have tweaked it’s appearance the way you wanted it. Now your blog has that stamp of your individuality all over it. Right? Think again.

Your blog stands out in all respect, yet it has the most common Favicon you could lay your hands on. Let’s change this.

What is Favicon?

In simple words… This

And we want to change it to this (at least in my case) :)

Now lets get down to change this. A favicon is a 16X16 px ico file. You need to have an ico file(*.ico) which will become your favicon. It can be any image file. Open any image file in IrfanView and then resize the image and save it as ico file. If you are short of ideas, you can head over to huge number of favicon collection.

Now a place to save your favicon online. You can use any online image hosting service or use the Google Sites. Create a site in google sites and then Click on Home as shown.

Then you can upload your ico file to your site

Once uploaded, note down its path. It should be something like this =>

http://sites.google.com/site/YOURSITENAME/Home/FAVICON.ico?attredirects=0

Now go to your blog’s Layout => Edit HTML.

Backup your blog’s template before making any changes.

Now find

and just below it paste the following code

Tweak Your Aspire – Numbering Comments

Your Blog is popular, unlike mine :) , and a lot of visitors leave comments on your posts, again unlike mine, do you wish you could number the comments. Numbering comments have lots of advantages.

First “It looks Cool” and that’s hot.

It gives you permalink to your comment, which can be given in other posts.

So lets start the project……

Go to Layout => Edit HTML and then click “Expand Widget Templates”.

Now search for

and just above this copy and paste the following code

This is where you can change the font size and align your Comment Number.

Now we have to add some more code so the the functionality of adding comment numbers could be achieved.

Tweak Your Aspire – Show your blog’s Description

This blog post is inspired by a problem faced by one of my reader. He has a blog about Philately and has text scrolling at the end of the page. What he wanted to do is to have that text scrolling at the top. The shortest and easiest possible answer to his problem was to have his message as blog’s description. But somehow Aspire does not show Description.

Yipeeeee, another addition to my (gradually) increasing number of posts.

Before doing anything with your template Please Backup Your Template.

As I have already told you… Aspire does not show your post’s Description. So first we will tackle this problem.

First search for

<h1><a expr:href='data:blog.homepageUrl'><data:title/></a></h1>

Just below it add

<h2><data:description/></h2>

So the final code should look something like

Just one more tweak and you will see the description of your blog.

Add Recent Comment Widget in Blogger

Firefox Plugin for Rapidshare, MegaUpload etc.

We all have at some point or other downloaded files from Rapidshare or Megaupload or from many other such sites. Many of them cap the download speed, Use Captcha or waiting period or a combination of these methods. This still makes their service attractive to all those who don’t want to register (pay) thus keeping them “in the running” and also lures people to register (pay) at these sites if they don’t want to encounter these “obstacles”. To overcome these restrictions; sometimes partially; there are several programs, standalone as well as plugins.

One of my favorite standalone program is CryptLoad about which I have already HERE. But today I will write about an Add-in for Firefox called SkipScreen. Though out on 2 April 2009, I was able to find it about a week later.

This is what a part of their web page looks like, telling us about its feature.

I, as usual, installed it and started to test it. First I downloaded a file from Rapidshare. I simply clicked on the link and SkipScreen took over. Though it was not able to bypass the mandatory wait time limit, the rest was taken care of.

Next came Megaupload. Megaupload first presented me with a captcha. SkipScreen was not able to fill the captcha. So after manually filling the captcha, SkipScreen almost instantly started downloading the file, bypassing the wait time!!

MediaFire- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

DepositFile- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

zShare- Just had to click the link and download started instantly.

Sharebee- This site has links to same file but from multiple file sharing sites. SkipScreen automatically chooses the best compatible site from the list and starts the download almost instantly.

In conclusion a very good Add-on for Firefox to have if you download from multiple file sharing sites. A must have in addition to Cryptload.

Tweak Your Aspire – Add Comment Form below Post

Continuing my “Tweak Aspire” series is another useful addition. Placement of “Comments Form” at the end of the post so that it becomes easier for everyone to add comments our post instead of being taken to a new page for adding comments or having a popup opening up.

Let’s start the process of enabling the Comments Form below Post. But first a word of Caution.

Always backup your template…. Just in case

First go to Settings => Comments

And Select Embed Below post.

Now Save and go to Layout => Edit HTML. Here Check Expand Widgets Templates.

Here find the code

Tweak Your Aspire – Show NavBar and Add Calendar

I have been receiving a lot of mails regarding tweaking of my present theme “Aspire”. Many of you are facing problems in deploying this theme and getting desired results. So to help all those who want to help themselves……

Go to Layout => Edit HTML

Do not Check “Expand Widget Templates”

Now lets start with the Navigation bar at the top.

By Default Navigation Bar is Hidden in this theme. Some of you would want to see the NavBar. So to enable it, you have to change the code as follows:-

Aspire theme Problems

I have been trying to help a lot of people who have been facing problems in Aspire theme.

Now all of you can Post your problems for the blogger version of the theme and I will try to sort it out. Also I will publish first part tomorrow, 13 April 2009 (8:00 PM IST), about code to add a calendar to your blog, like the one I have.

None of the code for the calendar is mine, I have simply copied the code from the net and used it. Thanx to the coder.

I have seen over time that people are facing problem with this theme and as it is a beautiful theme I decided to help those who want to use it. This particular post should be used to put your suggestions and your problems so that I look into those and post the solutions.

Too dormant...... for too long

I know that I have been not updating my posts for far too long period. This inactivity is due to me being very busy with my family and work. I have been getting a lot of mails regarding the theme, Aspire, I am currently using.

I have tweaked it a little bit and the results have been totally satisfying.
I will put majority of the code in a series in the next few days so that you could tweak this theme and get the desired results.

This was the day India became independent and started a very long march to become the largest democratic country in the world. I am a proud Indian wishing every Indian a Happy Independence day. We, as a nation, have achieved much and still there is more to be achieved. Let's work towards making this a better and peaceful country. Independence is a privilege which has to be protected by everyone by being Responsible. The responsibility lies with us to make sure that country progresses, to make sure we don't take this independence for granted and to make sure that we elect persons, to run this country, who are capable and honest and not some one based on caste or religion.

We have to guard our country from enemy, within and outside, if we have to keep enjoying the fruits of Independence. Think about it.

EXE file association fix and Open With Dialog box appears on double click

One fine day you boot up your computer and as usual double click on Internet Explorer to get ready to browse the World Wide Web. But wait.... what's this, instead of opening Internet Explorer you are presented with "Open With" dialog box. You think that maybe IE is corrupt. Then you fire your Firefox. Still the same Open With dialog box appears. You try to start your anti-virus...same, your anti-spyware....same. In fact you are not able to launch any of the EXE file. Press Panic Button..... YES. Because you are infected by a virus. Will you be able to run your EXE's again....Probably YES (if virus/worm has not done too much damage).

I faced this problem in my office yesterday. I double clicked on My Computer and the on my C: drive and I was again presented with Open With dialog box. Now my exe's were not working AND I was unable to browse my C: drive using My Computer route.

I first thought of fixing the drive part and found a utility called FixDrive. All I had to do was to download it and run it, and that's what I did. But when I tried to run FixDrive I was again presented with Open With dialog box (I actually forgot that I was unable to launch my EXE's) . The first thing that came to my mind was that the machine has been infected by some virus/worm (later to be proven right.), but my anti-virus was also not functioning. It seemed that my EXE file associations were messed up as when I double clicked a text file or doc or ppt the application could open and display those files. Thus I first had to correct that to be able to do anything further.

Since nothing was working I decided to try to open a stored HTML page by double clicking on it. And yes, my Firefox came to life and now at least I could browse. After a little bit of searching I found a registry fix to correct my EXE file association for Windows XP. Since I was suspecting a virus/worm attack, I went to Eset's Online Scanner to scan my system. It actually found a worm and deleted it. I decided to wait for the scan to complete so that no other trace of Virus/Worm was left behind.

After that I went about fixing my exe file association problem. Since I was not able to open my notepad, I double clicked on a TXT file and then save as exeFix.reg. This way I was able to edit the file in notepad.

A word of caution:- These files change registry entries. Apply these changes at you own risk and do not blame me. I already warned you.

Then I pasted the following code in exeFix.reg and saved it on my Desktop:

Now I double clicked the REG file to let it import the entries and Rebooted. This was the reason I had not applied the reg file first. As the worm would have overwritten everything again on reboot. Now I confidently rebooted my system knowing fully well that there were no virus/worm in my system.

After reboot my EXE files started to work again and I was able to run all my programs.

But the C: drive problem remained. As I had already downloaded FixDrive and my exe files now working, I simple double clicked FixDrive and then clicked Fix. Now I was again able to access my C: drive through My Computer.

Another job completed.

Know the size of Folders using Folder Size For Windows

Don't we just love Windows with all it's glorious shortcomings. Some of the features that should have been built into windows were conveniently left out. But that has proven to be a blessing in disguise. This lack of features has helped developer make utilities to make up for the shortcomings with just the right options to suit your taste. One of the feature I (like many of you) miss is the ability of Windows Explorer to show size of the folders. What stopped MS to include this wonderful little feature is beyond my comprehension. Any ways, I will tell you about this small freeware utility called Folder Size for Windows.

Folder Size for Windows can show file as well as folder size (oh, really!!). So lets start downloading it from here. With just 224 KB in size, it is a very helpful little utility. After you have downloaded Folder Size for Windows, install it.

To be able to see Folder size you need to open Windows Explorer in Details View as shown below.

Now Right click on the column headers to see a list of columns you can add.

Choose Folder Size and de-select Size.

Now you will have Folder Size installed and working for you. Make this the default view for all folders. Go to Folder Options from the Tools menu. In the View tab, click Apply to All Folders.

To change the options for Folder Size for windows, go to Control Panel and click Folder Size to get options page for Folder Size.

Following image shows the options page to make changes so that Folder Size For Windows shows sizes the way you want it.

Here you can choose to Start/Stop or Pause the Folder Size service.

This is the guy who made this wonderful utility.

Download YouTube Videos

Do you visit YouTube often and wish you could download the videos? Have you been looking for a YouTube downloader or already using one?
Well most of us have Downloader managers and most downloader managers have a feature to download videos from YouTube. Today I will tell you about a way to download YouTube videos if you do not have any download manager.

For this to work you must have Java installed in your machine. You can download it here.

Now for the fun part. Go to YouTube and click the video you want to watch/download. Then once the URL of video appears in the address bar, copy the url. For example I want to download Incredible India Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWuGEbPALy0)

Now just add kiss before youtube. the final url would look something like http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=fWuGEbPALy0

Scroll down and click the download button to download the file.

You will get get_video file. You can rename the file to any thing you like. For above example you can rename the file as, you guessed it, Incredible India. Don't forget to add the extenssion .flv to the name to play it locally. So now the file will become Incredible India.flv. Use you FLV player to play the file.

IrfanView - The best Graphic Viewer

Got a lot of images? Still viewing them in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer? Or are you using Picasa (a photo manager & editor) or Gimp, Photoshop (these are Editors). A good graphics viewer should be light weight, fast and be able to let us flip, zoom, save to other formats and then some more. Enter IrfanView, the Most-in-one graphic viewer.

Apart from being a feature packed, lightweight viewer; it is FREE ( for non commercial use).

Let me highlight some of the feature this beauty has for everyone to use.

Interface:-A very intuitive and simple interface with almost no learning curve. In fact for most of the daily tasks like Zoom in/out, Next/Previous image, information about image, flip, rotate etc, you will start performing immediately.

Supported file formats:- The amount of files supported by IrfanView is huge. In fact the site has a page dedicated to the supported file formats. Though for some formats to be viewed; you need to have plugins installed.

Batch Convert:- Have a lot of image files and want to convert them from one format to other. Or want to rename your image files. Or want to do both. Then the batch convert feature will do the job for you and save you the time.

Screen Capture:- Don't you hate print screen when you just need to capture just a window. Well, didn't I say this is Most-In-One application. You can simple press C (hotkey), select the options and when you are ready press ctrl+F11 and it will capture you screen or window.

With so many features and tools, this one freeware is a must have for everyone. And for most the features you have keyboard shortcuts which makes your work a little faster to accomplish.

Make changes in Aspire (a blogger theme) to show correct Date

First of all I would like to thank InfoCreek for providing their lovely theme- Aspire.

A better solution is described in HERE.

Now for all those who are using this theme with blogger and facing problem with date not showing. I also was faced with this problem but I liked this theme so much that I decided to make changes myself. After about just ten minutes I was able to fix the problem and the theme is now working perfectly. What changes did I make?

Well, first let's see what parts of the theme are affected by this "Date Malfunction".

If you have followed all the instructions then your post should look something like this.

Above is the heading of the post you would get when you follow all the instruction. But a small problem remains. If you scroll to the end of the post you will see that instead of the line

"This entry was posted on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 8:20 PM ." You see the following line.

Now if you select Time Format as shown above then you will be get "This entry was posted on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 8:20 PM ." but a new problem arises. If you change the Timestamp Format as shown above your post's heading will start looking like one of the images shown below.

Both these case do not make very good impression on the visitor. So it seems that we are in catch 22 position. Since I know a little bit of css, javascript and other things, I decided to make changes myself so that this theme works perfectly. Now let's change the things.

A word of CAUTION:- First backup your theme and make changes only if you are comfortable doing it. If something goes wrong Don't Blame me. (Any ay you have the backup).

Go to Layout -> Edit HTML
Click Expand Widget Templates.

ToolTips hides behind Taskbar

Tooltip appear when mouse cursor in hovered on to an item without clicking it. It is a very effective solution to provide helpful tips. But Windows has a bug where the tooltip hides behind the taskbar.

This bug had been there since Windows® 95 and has survived till Vista. This makes it the longest surviving bug, and Microsoft® only acknowledged it after the release of Windows® XP SP2. Their way to solve this is to Logout and Re-Login to the account or Reboot (What else !).

But now I have found a utility that can be simply be run whenever this problem occurs.

It does not patches or permanently fixes it but at least you don't have to Logout-Login OR reboot your PC. Saves a lot of time for those who really want their tooltips to show correctly. Thanks to BikeMike who used AutoHotKey to create this.

For those who are a little enthusiastic do the following to create your own fixer:-

Download AutoHotKey and Install.
Now goto Start=>Programs=>AutoHotKey=>AutoScriptWriter
Copy & Paste the following code given below.
Then save this code (shown below).
Now again Open Start=>Programs=>AutoHotKey=>Convert .ahk to .exe
Now choose your .ahk file you saved earlier and convert to exe file.
DO THIS ONLY IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE and CONFIDENT.
