Blogging is not new. Blogging is not the new age phenomenon. It was always there and will always be. It’s just that the medium to exchange messages has changed. There have been some sporadic changes that have led to a world full of new and buzzing technologies; Technology that have imparted our messages with wings; technology that has given us the strength to chat with distant like-minded individuals; technology that has brought the world closer.

Not so long ago messages were exchanged through letters, postcards, newsletters and national and international proclamations. It was a little slow. But eventually the message reached its destination.

Thousands of years ago when the world was divided into hundreds of kingdoms, its rulers blogged extensively. They wrote inscriptions on the stone; built monasteries and temples and churches to convey their message. Writing was done on the bark of the tree and its leaves until the Chinese invented paper. This was one form of blogging to pass information to the future generations. There were writers and poets in the kings’ courts. These poets entertained the court with their artistic skill; whereas the writers often wrote biographies of the kings. Even today the biographies are preserved and decoded by historians and put on a blog. Information is thus shared after all. In the ancient period the messages were carried by a human from one place to another. They might travel in chariots or on foot. There was always a doubt if the message reached its intended party but not today.

In the present world our medium to exchange ideas has changed. We use internet and weblogs instead. It is by far the fastest means of communication. Thanks to technology and weblogs.

Most of the population today consists of either restless individuals or couch potatoes. They want instant stardom or success. The technology has created many lazy bums to even cultivate a hobby. It’s always hard to come out of the comfort zone. But those who break out from their cocoon do go a long way ahead in life.

A hobby is something you do in your free time. That does not mean that you work extra hard to keep a hobby. A systematic time table and a healthy lifestyle are two important things that one should imbibe in oneself. Unless a person realizes the importance of time, a hobby will be very difficult to cultivate.

It is not necessary that your hobby should generate you some extra income. A hobby generally helps one to improve one’s self-esteem. A hobby makes us think and enhance our intelligent quotient. One’s hobby should give that extra mileage to one’s personality. It should guide the individual in the right direction. One should harness its freshness and vitality.

Why not Blogging as a hobby? Blogging will hone your creative cells. Through blogging you would receive daily updates with what’s happening outside as far as your favourite topic is concerned. You would also be able to interact with live readers. A whole new world of excitement will open up; thus giving you a healthy way of passing time.

Today through blogging, one can receive the latest happening in ones’ inboxes. We can freely express our views and thoughts on a common forum. Blogging is an interactive medium that helps you put your point across.

A blog is a webpage consisting of texts and images. It is the easiest way to give your ideas the wings they always deserved.

Blogging is the next best thing that happened after the discovery of internet. So come along and reap the fruits of it.

Blogging is a tool using which one can reach out to the world. It hardly takes any time to start blogging. For a blogger it is only important to know the subject; the rest comes naturally to an artistic writer. Imagination is the key. The desire to challenge one’s artistic side brings success to a blogger.

Blogging is the new way to communicate with the audience. One may blog to vent out his feelings or frustrations; some just want to be heard. One may deliver his expertise on a particular subject matter. Some write to flaunt their writing skills whereas others write to excel in blogging. There are even others who blog to get noticed.

The time is never incorrect for a blogger to start blogging. It doesn’t require any auspicious day to inaugurate a blog. A blog is an independent body which is regulated by fellow bloggers. The regulators are free to comment on a blog post and give their views about the post.

These days we see a new generation of bloggers; the bloggers who want to make money in haste. A word of caution here: Haste is waste. One should never skip the steps when climbing the ladder. Marketing of the blog is very important. Any time spent to market the blog will definitely reap you good results.

Every blogger dreams of making it big. They want to touch the stars and seek immense popularity; Nothing wrong in thinking that way unless you have a plan.

Every venture is associated with a business plan; a plan that leads us to our goals; a plan that will shape things in a sequential manner; a plan that will take us closer to our desires.

Let us jot down some facts while writing a plan.

Finalize on the blogging subject
Before one starts to blog, the subject has to be decided upon. Choosing a subject will depend upon the personal interest of the individual. Choosing the correct subject is the first step towards success.

Stay firm on the chosen blogging subject
Once a subject is selected, it is necessary that the blog talks about it. Any post that diverts the blog’s theme will cause hindrance to the blog’s popularity. Often start-up bloggers fall short of ideas to write a new post. So it’s wise to choose a subject that you think you can do justice to.

Make a rule to post a certain number of posts per week
Publishing posts regularly will keep updating your blog and the search engines. The more frequently you post the higher would be your google page ranking. It’s a nice way to get your readers hooked onto your blog.

Check out your contemporaries
Make it a habit to browse through your fellow bloggers’ blogs. That’s how you would come to know the latest happenings in the blogging world. Sometimes when you comment on other blogs you may come across a good idea to write a new post on your blog.

Be a part of the blogging community
Establish a blogging community of your own; write comments on fellow blogger’ blogs regularly. Be a part of a blog forum. Communicate with your readers. Unless you visit other blogs of similar niche as yours it will be hard to drive quality readers visiting your blog.

I guess its best to write 100 posts already before one begins to blog. In other words, one has to post at least 100 posts before the blog takes off. Think out of the box. Be innovative.

Blogging is an addiction! The more you encounter new tools to blog, more the fun. And the more is the zeal with which one wants to unearth new tricks of blogging. An amateur blogger may put his heart and soul into blogging for the first couple of months. However after a certain period, his energy drains leaving him clueless.

Get on to blogging
Often newbie bloggers would blog with an intention of making it big in less time. They seem to be in a hurry to earn money online. However when they realize that money doesn’t come that easy, they get dejected. The discouraged blogger leaves hope and stops blogging! What one should understand is that through blogging money does not come instantly. It is a slow process. So get on to blogging regularly.

Be consistent
Blog posts appearing on regular intervals of time is a good thing. However when no posts are published for a long time then there is a problem. So one should try and post at least 2 articles per week.

Derive pleasure in blogging
If blogging is fun for you, you should derive pleasure out of it. Passing your time blogging is a good thing. It certainly improves your writing skills and adds creativity in your life.

Seek guidance from fellow bloggers
If at any point in time, you feel let down, turn to the pro bloggers. Read their blogs. They would certainly guide you. Also read the blogs of similar subject as yours. Exchange views with the fellow bloggers for support.

Update your blog
One should constantly update oneself with the new tools on blogging. Catching up on a new tool is certainly a good way to give your blog a new dimension. Go give your blog a slight makeover. The blog should be updated with the times.

Mapping domain to your blogger blog

You might think that once you got a domain name for your blog, all your worries are allayed. Think again!

You need to understand that a domain name in mere existence is of no use. You have to map it to your blogger blog. Url forwarding is not the option here. Amateur bloggers get really excited to have their own dot com. But in the hurry they ignore the nuances involved. And when things don’t work their way, they feel cheated.

Look, getting a domain name is very easy. You just need to log on to the internet and check for the availability of your domain. Once you zeroed in on any one of the available names, register it with your domain registrar. Here, I’d suggest you to do a bit of research and check for genuine domain providers.

What do you do next? Start the mapping process.
Please note: If you are using a blogger account, you just need to buy a domain name. The web hosting is taken care by blogger.
Having done that, you now need someone to do the ‘DNS hosting’ for you.

Let us now summarize the mapping process:

1. Domain registration,
2. DNS Hosting, and
3. Blog settings.

1. Domain registration: Search the phrase “buy a domain” in google and you should be able to get top ten domain registrars. Select any credible domain registrar and buy a domain name.

2. DNS hosting: Configure NS records and manage your domain. In layman’s language visit any free DNS hosting website and follow the instructions.

3. Blog Settings: Point your blog to the domain name you just registered.

Once you are through, don’t expect to see the results instantaneously. Wait for a day or two to reflect it on your blog.

In today’s fast paced age of technology and rising inflation, it is hard not to think money all the time. Very true! However one has to be careful not to mix creativity, passion and hobby with money. One should generate creative satisfaction from one’s hobby. Passion for hobby is a good thing. But passion for money through hobby is wrong. There are many other ways to generate revenue; like a full-time job.

It is advisable to strictly work at office and play or relax with a hobby at home. The moment one thinks of making money through blogging, the focus of attention drastically shifts; thus deviating from the art and fun with blogging. Blogging is an enjoyable phenomenon. One has to enjoy the various techniques it offers. There are campaigns available on the internet to affiliate with your blog. One should try it out. The intention should be to learn and enjoy the blogging phenomenon.

Blogging offers varied features and services to its publishers and readers. Through Blogging the publisher can voice his opinion to the readers. The views can be put forth to a large audience. A global exposure can be achieved through web blogging. Once famous the blogger succeeds in creating a brand for the blog.

Build upon a Blog community

Often most newbie bloggers face a common dilemma of diverting traffic to their blogs. They get visibly disappointed; thereby losing interest in blogging. I’ve personally come across many such bloggers. The common complaint I get is that of less traffic.

When I asked a few bloggers about their blogging experience, they said that they regularly published their posts, at least once in two days; sometimes even every day. But still fell short of expectations. After about 2 months of hard work, they said the visitor count on their blogs didn’t show any noticeable change.

The common mistake the newbie bloggers today do is that they do not build upon a community. They fail to understand that building online relationships with fellow bloggers is the most viable option. Being a regular poster is a good thing. However when the posts are not shared or commented upon, they do not receive a higher google ranking.

Diverting traffic to the blogs is in the bloggers’ hands. Just as new posts are published on ones blogs, bloggers need to post comments on other blogs too. The comment should not be a random one or hastily written. One should post a relevant comment to a blogpost. A wise blogger would first read a blogpost, understand its contents and then post a comment relevant to the blogpost. If a blogger would consistently comment on other blogs for at least 2 months, he would start receiving comments on his own blog; thus building a community of his own.

Commenting is no doubt a good approach for building a relationship. However it may not be the only option.

Why Bloggers stop blogging?

Blogging is certainly not an easy thing to do. It is serious stuff. It needs patience and a lot of hard work especially when you are on your own. While blogging you need to focus your mind at the subject of your blog. Any deviation from the subject would affect your blog readership. New posts should arrive at regular intervals of time. A proper study would help you research more on the subject you are posting on your blog.

No traffic on the blog: Most new bloggers check the hits on the blog everyday. It is a motivating factor that will lead to more quality posts from you, only if the numbers are increasing. However if the numbers are not encouraging then it leads to depression and distractions.

Nothing new to write: After a few easy posts suddenly the new blogger runs out of ideas. He even lazes to even research or google on the subject.

No revenue generated: Most bloggers are under the impression that blogging generates revenue. When they find out that the account balance is yet to open, they feel depressed. This takes away their interest in blogging.

Technical incompetent: When trying to unearth the search engine optimization tools, new bloggers tend to find it difficult to understand and implement the webmaster tools. They eventually give up with dismay.

Lack of peer group containing bloggers: When a new blogger has a query, he would reach out to the internet and try to exploit the resources available. However when he is not able to understand the jargon involved in the solutions, he misses his blogger peer group. He finds no friends who would help him with his queries.

Not enough resources: A new blogger would typically write new posts and update his blog regularly. By doing so, he would expect visitors on his blog. To get visitors, the blogger has to spend more time not blogging than blogging. What needs to be done to get visitors is also something the new blogger needs to be aware of.

Lack of marketing: Marketing your blog is the next step after publishing every new post. No one would know about the existence of your blog unless you market it online.

AIDS Campaigner Damaria

Blogging is truly the gift of new age technology. Blogging is a tool which when used positively can do wonders to our lives. It is up to us as to how we would like to harness its energy. Damaria Senne is a blogger who would like to bring about a global change through her blog. Damaraia is a writer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She says, “Currently I’m working on my biggest project called the OneLove Regional Campaign.”

She further adds, “The OneLove Regional Campaign targets Southern African countries such as Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.”

The OneLove Regional Campaign is an initiative to make people aware about the Acquired immune deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) virus. The project aims to get the people of southern Africa thinking and talking about their sexual behaviour in this time of HIV and AIDS. Through the blog, Damaria is doing a commendable job of spreading AIDS awareness in the countries of South Africa. “As a blogger, my job is to liaise with the campaign partners in these nine countries to develop and publish content on the blog that will meet their campaign agenda,” says Damaria.

Aware of blogging since 2002, Damaria took 3 years to get hooked on to it. “I learnt about blogging back in 2002, when an old writer friend of mine, Janet Pieterse, launched one. At that time I thought it was a waste of her time. Then in 2005, I decided to start a blog about my adventures as a creative writer and mother,” She says.

Like any other blogger, Damaria is well aware about the current marketing techniques available online. They feel that blogging is catching up with the orthodox means of communication i.e. the print medium. Some even think that Blogging would replace it. Aditya Bhadra is one such blogger who thinks that voicing an opinion on the blog is much simpler. “Readers can comment about the topics in real-time and get feedback,” says the young blogger. Mr. Bhadra calls his blog Soul Intoxicated.

Mr. Bhadra is a student who likes to keep a diary online. “I used to keep a hardback diary but it was hard to keep it a secret. So I thought there’s no point in hiding what I write, and blogging was a medium to let others know while staying anonymous at the same time,” says he. “I usually post my poetry and sometimes short stories or paragraphs on the topic close to my heart, LOVE. I write about my life, my thoughts and sensitive relationships.”

Aditya is not interested to go commercial with his blog at the moment. Speaking of making money online he says, “I am not interested in making money online and I do not have any issues against those who want to until they don’t bug people to click on their ads. I think very soon making money online would be considered a profession.”

Unlike other bloggers who would like to flaunt their achievements and awards in the field of blogging, this young lad likes to underplay it. He was recently awarded the Thinking Blogger award which he humbly accepted. Besides, he is also the recipient of the Flogger award and the Best Blog of the day award. “I do not blog so that people can read what I have to say; I blog because I like doing it. So it doesn’t really matter if I get a hundred visitors a day or just one, until I am creatively satisfied,” says the star blogger.

Speaking of dot com, Aditya believes that a blog with its own domain name receives more traffic. “When I got a good deal over the internet to buy a domain name, I took advantage of it and changed my blog to a dot com,” says the young achiever. “As a result I’m able to receive about 200 hits on my blog everyday.”

The star blogger is currently doing his bachelors in CS and business administration from Saint Mary’s University in Canada. He is an indoor person and an introvert by nature. He relentlessly cares about his near and dear ones. Not surprisingly, Aditya would certainly like to dedicate his blog to his lovely girlfriend Aeshna.

One’s hobby may not always generate as much revenue as one’s salary. However it would give a person the much needed creative satisfaction. Kulraj Singh is one such person who is thrilled with the blogging phenomenon. Kulraj is a numismatist.

In layman’s language Kulraj collects numismatic items, esp. coins. “Through my blog My coin collection I plan to provide comprehensive information on all coins,” says Mr. Singh. He further adds, “The blog would also contain other details such as the origin and the symbolism of the coins.”

Kulraj started collecting coins in mid 2008. Only recently in January 2009 he realized the potential of internet and launched a blog for his coin collection. “I post a byte on the coin collection blog everyday. I believe in doing so in the years to come, it will be the biggest site on coins in India.”

Academically strong, Kulraj strongly believes in the power of internet. He agrees that through internet knowledge can be spread across the globe by the click of a button. He says, “I use blog as a tool to express my views to the people across continents. As far as the coins blog is concerned, I find it the best way to showcase my coin collection. I also like the simplistic design of a blog and I prefer it over a website.” Kulraj receives a whopping 100 hits on his coin collection blog everyday.

Apart from collecting coins, Kulraj pens another blog by the name of The mind tree. Through this blog he would like to put forth his views, beliefs and his philosophy to his readers. Speaking about any recognition in the field of blogging Kulraj says, “As human beings, we are all hungry of recognition and appreciation from others for whatever we do. The appreciatory comments and mails that I receive is my award and my recognition.” As far as my goals are concerned he says, “I want to convert my coin collection blog into an encyclopaedia on coins and be renowned as a numismatist in India and abroad.”

“Initially I blogged for limited audience; I normally posted what I learnt in class while doing my BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application),” says the 25 year old Blogger. He calls himself Diabolic Preacher (DP). “I used to write a summary of what’s being done in class with a link to additional resources.”

An IT administrator by profession, this blogger started blogging with the idea of maintaining a log of what was taught in class. DP started blogging when he was18 years old. When asked why blogging, DP says, “Blogging is easy and maintenance is zero. I often use my tech articles as ‘How to’ references to help people. I write in a way that I’d like to read later on. I have learnt a lot about writing posts and how to improve upon the length.” He further adds, “When I blog, I put my thoughts in front of me and can think deeper about the topic. Additionally Freemind and Q10 are the best tools to write blog posts, they enable me to write meaningful stuff than what a personal blog might end up having.”

Being a part-time blogger, DP publishes most of his posts in the weekends. He says, “I may not publish articles on a regular basis but I take some time out on Saturdays and Sundays to author content, collect info and plan articles.” DP calls his blog Abusive views. Making money online does not excite the 25 year old blogger. “My content is all that I value on my blog, and I hope my readers agree with me,” says the IT administrator.

Comparing print medium and Blogging, DP says, “There’s a thing about opening the newspaper and stretching ones arms on the easy chair. Probably in the future Reporters would maintain blogs like those at IBN and many other news networks. There are some bloggers who write for the print medium as well. Although publishing with blogs is easier and faster. However it is not as accessible at the local level compared to the print medium.”

DP’s future goals are very succinct. He aims at a high technorati rank. He says, “Identifying and understanding the audience and improving the reader experience, while keeping my topics of interests at the fore are my primary goals.”

The IT Blogger is straight-forward and clear in his thoughts. “Never pretend to be what you can’t pretend to be,” says he. He further adds, “Laughter is the best medicine is the mantra of life.”

Writing posts is not an easy job. It does not always guarantee you a better page rank. The quality of the content has to be precise and to the point. The readers do not appreciate a poorly written article.

In order to get traffic to your blog a well researched article has to be posted. The writer has to give something new to its readers every time he/she publishes a post.

Here are some tips to the writers to write good and successful posts:

Always read on the subject before you start writing: A better way to summarize a subject in the form of a post is to read a lot about the topic. Google the topic, search the newspapers and surf the television set. You might come across something new every time.

Read blogs that have a similar subject as yours: Often we come across blogs that are similar to ours. Let’s call these blogs the ‘familiar blogs.’ Derive the positives from the ‘familiar blogs’ and build on them.

Play a game for recreation: If you have reached your deadline and are not ready with a new post, what do you do? You tried a lot to write a new article but somehow were not able to get your acts together, don’t get nervous. Try reading the newspaper; pick up a book and start reading. Play a game and relax. Give your mind a break before you start writing again. Remember write quality posts. Crappy and regular posts do not give you a better page rank.

Meditate to clear your thoughts: It is very important that neat thoughts flow in your mind while writing on a topic. The logical flow would help you draft an article properly. An article should always have an abstract, the body and the concluding paragraph.

Often many start-up bloggers face a common dilemma, “What to blog about?” Once they make up their mind they zero in on a subject (theme) which they think they have good knowledge about. The problem arises when they run out of ideas to write about their selected subject. The result: after 3 months they stop blogging.

They may have generated some hits on their blog initially; would have become a bit popular too. But then, when they stop updating their blog, the visitor count decreases. And once the web stats drip, they loose interest in blogging. What should be done then?

In order to keep posting, the first thing that you need to do is to relax. Don’t hurry on setting up a blog. Instead write a business plan or a rough draft about the theme of your blog. Planning is very important. You also need to analyze other blogs and learn from them. The next step is to shortlist a couple of themes for your blog. Before you finalize on any one theme, understand the pros and cons of your subject matter. Jot down the limitations. What next?

Sit down and write at least 25 articles or copies or posts for your blog. Chalk out a strategy to post them at regular intervals of time. By doing so, you’ll have ample posts in reserve. Then launch your blog.

One last thing: at any time, don’t switch over to a new theme all of a sudden.

First of all, get a decent looking template and work towards organizing it. The visitor should feel at home when he comes by your page. He or She should be able to browse your blog easily and swiftly.

Second, once the blog is set up, chalk out your purpose of blogging. You need to zero in on any one subject that will occupy maximum space on your blog. The contents on your blog should be well organized and well written. Use short, simple and crisp sentences.

Third, after a week, you will realize that your blog is shaping up nicely. It looks attractive as well and above all has a good potential to get some traffic. So what do you do? Follow the next step.

Four, get a domain name, map it to your blog and host your website. Here, I’d suggest you to do some research work.

Five, now that you have your own dot com, tell others about it. And how do you do that? Follow the next step.

Six, There are some online services that allow you to update search engines about the recent updates to your blog, with a single ping. Use them. In addition, you should also organize carnivals and participate in forums. There are some websites that also allow you to post your blog articles.

Seven, your website would now get a minimum of 100 hits everyday.

Ramandeep Singh hails from Delhi and is a student of BCA. Understanding the true potential of a blog, it wasn’t much difficult for this delhi lad to monetize his blog. He was awarded the citizen journalist of the year 2006 from merinews.com, an ezine. He works for an NGO for a living and is truly a social activist of his kind. Shantanu Dutta talks passionately about his blog and wants to reach out to a larger audience. He knows that the internet is limited to a certain number of audiences. Nevertheless he does his bit and tries to bring about a change. A change we all are desperately awaiting.

“I blog about the relevant social issues we face in India,” says the 47 year old blogger. “I would like to voice my opinion to as many people as possible.”

Mr. Dutta is religious. He likes to see the world through the love and compassion that almighty Jesus represented.

When told to compare blogs to the print medium, Mr. Dutta said, “Blogs as of now can complement but not replace print media.
