How to blog Import and Export

Today’s release brings another long-desired feature to Blogger: Import and Export of blogs. Now you can export all of your posts and comments into a single, Atom-formatted XML file for easy backup. You can then import the posts back into Blogger, either into an existing blog or into a new one.

To export your blog, log in to http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/ and go to the Settings > Basic page. You’ll see the Others Tools links at the top of the page for importing and exporting. (We also moved blog deletion up here from the bottom of the page. Don’t worry about accidentally clicking it, though; your blog wouldn’t be deleted until you confirmed on the next page.)

Once you click “Export blog” and press the “Export” button on the next page, your browser will prompt you to save the XML file for your blog. Keep it somewhere safe as a backup, or import it into a different blog. You can import one blog into another from the Blog Tools links, or when creating a new blog. Look for the “Advanced Options” at the bottom of the page.

When you import a blog, all of the posts will get saved in an “imported” state. From there you can publish just a few, or all of them at once. Here are some ideas for what you can do with importing and exporting:

Merge two or more blogs into one. Take the exported posts and comments from one blog and import them into another one.
Move individual posts from blog to blog. After importing, select just a set of posts to publish and publish them with one click.
Back up your blog to your own storage. You can keep your words safe and under your control in case anything happens to your blog, or us, or if you want to remove them from the Internet.
Move your blog somewhere else. Our export format is standard Atom XML. We hope to see other blogging providers extend their Atom support to include import and export. And, if you decide to come back to Blogger, importing your export file will get you back up and running in seconds.

Caveats

The export format currently only covers blog posts and comments to those posts, not blog settings or templates. To back up a Classic template, copy and paste the template code from the editor. To back up a Layouts template, use the Backup / Restore template option to download a copy of your template.
Before importing a blog for the first time, we recommend that you create a new, throwaway blog to import into so you get a sense for how the process works. Once you’re comfortable, import into your public blog.
At the moment there is a 1MB size limit on the blog you can import. This is a bug that we are correcting the issue.

Create Blogger Make a Menu Bar That Categorizes Posts

One of the biggest problems with Blogspot is the menu bar. In WordPress, you can easily and quickly create drop down menus. In order to make that work in Blogger, you need to modify your code. However, not all is lost. Maybe you can’t have drop down menus without a lot of headache, but you can have categories at the top of your menu bar. You can use your labels as categories. Let’s say for example you write about food, marriage, and fashion. When someone comes to your site, they may only want to browse through the marriage posts. By creating a menu tab with the word marriage, blogger will pull up only those posts. Typically a menu bar is only comprised of static pages or outbound links. However, using a simple formula, you can create your labels to work as menu bar items!

If you haven’t created labels yet, you should. Labels are like extra keywords that attach to your post, but if you want to use the labels to help categorize your posts, pick about five or six labels and always use the same label when you are adding it to a post.

Once all your posts are labeled, here’s how to make the menu bar.

1. Login to your Blogspot dashboard.

2. Go to layout.

3. Click on your menu bar widget (it’s probably labeled pages) to open it up.

4. Go to the bottom where it says ADD LINK PAGE.

5. Type in the title as you want it to appear (in our example, type the word wordpress).

6. Now you need to type in a URL. http://www.[your blog name].com/search/label/[your label]

7. Hit save.

You are all set! Any blog post that uses that label will be pulled up like a filtered archive (listed according to date).

How to Unzip files on a Linux Server

Here is my small php script for unzipping zipped files on a Linux server.

I looked all over the Internet for such a script and ~~could not find one that met my needs~~ needed something small, so I decided to write my own. You can download it at the bottom of this page for free and use it at your own risk.

I host with godaddy ~~and they don't provide any "out of the box" tools to unzip zipped files~~ (they have recently added a file manager in their hosting control panel, but you still need to log in etc in order to unzip files) - therefore the creation of the unzipper.php script.

I've tested it on godaddy.com Linux hosting.

Why:
When you need to FTP a large amount of files in one sitting, it takes a lot of time. It is MUCH quicker to FTP a zipped file and then to extract the contents (with directory structure) on the server itself. Something that took me over ten minutes now barely takesone!

Instructions:

FTP the "unzipper.php" and "pclzip.lib.php" files to your online folder containing the zipped file/s and run it from your browser
This script only looks for zipped files in the same folder as where the script is run from!
NB NB NB - this script overwrites all files without asking. Please make sure you are using the correct directory. I advise you to first test it with a small zip file containing one dummy text file.

Example:

Let's say you have zipped files stored in the domain.com/zips folder that you want to unzip
Then you need to FTP "unzipper.php" and "pclzip.lib.php" to the same "zips" directory of domain.com
Now access "http://www.domain.com/zips/unzipper.php" from your browser and follow the onscreen instructions

A Few Questions First

How often do you FTP a new wordpress install to your live server?

Well if you are a freelance web designer or developer then I would say quite often. Every time you put a new site live you have to upload the entire wordpress site which can be 800+ files.
How long does it you take to upload your whole wordpress site?
The last time I timed it (with a fresh install of wordpress 3 beta 1), it took over 10 minutes to upload the 815 files (10.7 MB).
Why does it take so long?
Besides my really slow internet connection, it’s really FTP’s fault. Depending on the software you use (I use FileZilla), you can choose how many concurrent transfers, but when you are uploading 800+ files, being able to transfer 10 files at once still can take a while. Also, the file size is a factor and the fact that most of the files being transferred are php files means that there is major room for improvement from a compression point of view.

The Obvious Next Step – ZIP

Obviously we need to compress the files into a single zip archive. We could then upload the much smaller file to the server. The only problem left is that we need to unzip the file once it has been uploaded onto the server. And one way to do that would be to write some PHP code to do this task for us. But since you are reading this article in order to save time, I am guessing you don’t have time to write this code either.

The Solution

PHP UnZIP comes to the party and fills this gap. It allows you to FTP your much smaller zip file onto your server and then unzip it in 1 click. All the logic is contained in a single file ‘unzip.php’ which weighs in at 98KB. So all we need to do is FTP our zip archive together with the unzip.php file and we can do exactly what we have set out to.

Step By Step

Download unzip.zip and extract unzip.php.
Zip your wordpress install (or whatever else) into a single zip.
Upload your new zip together with unzip.php to your server via FTP. Make sure the zip file is in the correct directory on your server where you would like it to be extracted.
CHMOD unzip.php to 777. I do this with my FTP program (FileZilla) by right-clicking on the file and selecting ‘File Permissions’. (for windows you will have to allow full control or modify secutiry permission to the necessary user)
Open the file unzip.php in your browser.
Browse your server’s directories and click the zip file to UnZIP it!
Delete both the zip file and unzip.php.
Decide what to do with the extra time you now have.

These are instructions on how to unlock the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G for use with any GSM cellphone carrier using UltraSn0w. This will work with the iOS 4.0 firmware.

Before you can follow these instructions you must have a jailbroken iPhone and you must be on the 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, or 01.59 baseband(modem firmware).

Step One
Press to launch Cydia Installer from your SpringBoard.

Step Two
Press to select the Manage tab at the bottom of the screen.

Step Three
Press to select the large Sources button

Step Four
If the ultrasn0w repo is not present press the Edit button at the top right of the screen. Otherwise, skip to Step Nine.

Step Six
Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ as the source url and press the Add Source button.

Step Seven
Once the source has been added press the large Return to Cydia button.

Step Eight
Press the Done button at the top right of the screen.

Step Nine
Press to select repo666.ultrasn0w.com from the list of user entered sources.

Step Ten
Press to select ultrasn0w from the list of packages

Step Eleven
Press the Install button at the top right of the screen.

Step Twelve
Press the Confirm button at the top right of the screen.

Step Thirteen
After installation completes successfully press the large Return to Cydia button.

Step Fourteen
Now press the Home button then power off and power on the iPhone. You do this by holding down the power button for 3 seconds then moving the power slider that appears to the right. Press the power button again to turn on the phone.

Step Fifteen
You should now be able to insert the SIM of your choice!

Maximize your packet transfer thru MTU (MAXIMUM TRANSMISSION UNIT) Note: Please read carefully and make sure you have restore backup just in case you made a mistake. Try at your own risk.

Sa mga bagohan, bago po tayo magtanong ay pakiintindi pong mabuti yung mga pamamaraan dito. Unahin po muna natin yung sa pagkuha ng max ng packet size natin by Ping Method bago tayo maedit ng registry dahil ilalagay po natin doon yung number max packet size sa huli. Kaya wag po tayong manhula o magshortcut dahil nonsense po itong lahat. Sa ping method eh max po sa iba eh 1500 at yung iba eh 1400, gagawin lang po natin para makuha nio yung max nio eh add and minus lang po tayo dian ng 28 para maging result nia eh gaya nun nasa 2nd screenshot na zero lost.Working po sa lahat ng OS to as long na may regedit po tayo, konting diskarte na lang please! Walang bagohan sa thread na may tutorial ng procedure. Tamang pagbasa lang po at konting isip ang kailangan natin dito pero kung mahina ka sa english...YUN LANG! Btw, I'm using Win 7 Ultimate. I set my MTU setting to 1451(my MTU max). So far so good, im receiving all the packets and nothings lost.

MTU Definition:

Maximum Transfer Unit - The largest size of IP datagram that may be transferred on a given network. Most network implementations have a default setting of 1500 bytes.

Lets begin by Pinging:

A series of ping tests using the command, ping www.expedient.net -f -l xxxx, where xxxx is the packet size, can be used to determine the optimal MTU for your connection.

1. Go to Start and select Run.

2. Type in cmd (Windows 2000/XP) or command (Windows 98/ME) into the Open: field. Hit the enter key or click OK. The DOS prompt should open.

3. At the DOS prompt, type in ping www.expedient.net -f -l 1492 and hit the Enter key.

5. Note the results above indicate that the packet needs to be fragmented. Lower the size the packet in increments of +/-10 (e.g. 1472, 1462, 1440, 1400) until you have a packet size that does not fragment.

7. Begin increasing the packet size from this number in small increments until you find the largest size that does not fragment. Add 28 to that number (IP/ICMP headers) to get the optimal MTU setting. For example, if the largest packet size from ping tests is 1462, add 28 to 1462 to get a total of 1490 which is the optimal MTU setting.

How to modify the MTU Settings for VPN Connections on XP
To modify the MTU settings for VPN connections, you need to add the ProtocolType DWORD value, the PPPProtocolType DWORD value, and the TunnelMTU DWORD value to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0

To do so, follow these steps.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NdisWan\Parameters

3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.

4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols sub key that you created in step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.

5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.

6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.

8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.

10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.

12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.

14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

15. Type TunnelMTU, and then press ENTER.

16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want (e.g. 1460) in the Value data box, and then click OK.

18. Quit Registry Editor.

19. Restart your computer.
