“Because Apple creates the hardware, operating system and many built-in applications, Apple computers are truly integrated systems with vastly superior support. AppleCare offers a range of service and support products to meet your needs.” – Apple Inc.

Apple’s Customer support is amazing, known for its excellence, friendliness, and professionalism. However, this isn’t always the case…

A month after the roll-out of Apples latest Macbook Pro “Late 2008″ I indulged myself with buying one of my own… I live in egypt so for obvious reasons Apple’s Premium Resellers here didn’t have them in stock. So, I had someone buy it and ship it to me from the states… Say that I’m a little slow when it comes to noticing flaws… but my excuse was that I was overwhelmed with the eye-candy awesomeness of my new machine

A couple of months later I noticed some flickering lines on my screen from the right that would occasionally appear for no valid reason, like I wouldn’t be working on any GPU crunching applications/games. One day while shutting the lid of my laptop, I found something that shocked the hell outta me… my lid was never shitting properly… Let me elaborate, apparently the unibody chasis of mine was slightly bent upwards from the back left corner, therefore lifting the left hinge a little bit so when the lid closes, it shifts off the uni-body chasis!!! Now being completely honest here… This is my gadget BABY!!! I would never had dropped it, mis-handled it, nor leave it in the middle of harm’s way… So, I called up Apple’s support hotline in the states and they told me that my warrenty should allow me to replace the unit with a new unit, so they redirected me to their website so that I can check about the closest Apple Service Center, so I tracked my way through the following : Apple US. -> Apple Europe. -> Arab Business Machine (Located in Dubai) -> To finally a few Authorized Service Centers here in Egypt!!!

I Picked one, gave them a call, and they said “Sorry, but your warrenty is not valid with us, however you can fix it but you will have to pay…“. I was like oookaaay… so I tried calling another one, and they said “Yes we accept your warrenty, stop by our office and we’ll have a look and see what can be done“. Awesome… so I I headed over there immediately only to be recieved with complete dissappointment… I met one of the Engineers over there and he said the same crap that the 1st service center said to me on the phone… I was like “what the hell, one tells me yes on the phone and then you tell me no!!!“… So I continued my journey around each and every single service provider that egypt has currently… only to be recieved with rejection!!! made me kinda furious.

My computer is running fine… its nothing that drastic, only the fact that the flickering from the side of my screen is due to some pressure on the data cable!!! which is worrying me the most… I don’t want to end up with a Shiny $2,000 LED Flashlight at the end of the day – you know what I mean?!!

The point is, Apple is awesome… I love apple, I’ve been using apple products ever since I’ve learned how to count!!, but my advise to all of you who are in 3rd world countries and considering buying apple products from abroad “Or Any Brand of that Matter” – DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! make sure you have your service centers, a valid warrenty in case anything happens – especially for those of you who don’t travel abroad often, or whatever they buy is critical for their business/life and they can’t afford not having it for more than a week.

Hello Skype! I hope you enjoy your new home residing on the cutting edge of mobile platforms (yes I’m biased… I own one so what the heck).

A few months ago I heard rumors from inside Skype that they are definitly planning to release an iPhone app, at the time I was so excited and couldn’t wait for it to come out. but then once it started to gain traction and mobile companies felt threatened from VoIP services. it seemed like it was enevitable that any sort of service as such would be available. but then again… the customer is always right and eventually gets what they want, well atleast in one shape or form.

It makes strategic and logical sense to bar VoIP over 3G, EDGE, and GPRS networks… since if they had let it through howelse will companies like AT&T, vodafone, O2, and many more make money? I also heard that germany’s T-Mobile is preventing VoIP over their hotspot networks… now thats a real bummer.

But lets go back to a few months ago, I am a very mobile person, I move around and take my laptop almost everywhere I go. I’d go to cafe’s connect to their wireless networks and call away to friends all around the world. or even send SMS’s for cheaper rates to other countries, or even within egypt sometimes when I won’t have credit and need to send an urgent one. So yea, computers are getting smaller and smaller everyday. and people getting the kicks out of the All-in-one solutions are just exponential. it will happen eventually! why not think constructivly and instead of blocking these services, why not monitize it in some way or form? say for instance:

Subscription rates for VoIP services?

Mobile providers to negotiate on a shared revenue plan (I’ll give you access to my 3g network for a small piece of your cake!)

think outside of the box and I’m sure you’ll be able to think of much much more!!!

Enough ranting about this and let me tell you my personal opinion about Skype for the iPhone you’ll notice that I kinda added some of the things I think would’ve been great to have aswell to this list.

Amazing sound quality

Elegant interface

You can chat with friends over 3G and WiFi

Can’t make phone calls over 3G, only WiFi

Access to your addressbook to get those numbers that aren’t in your contact list.

Edit your profile

indication on how much Skype credit you got left

Can’t send SMS (boohoo) I want it BAAACK

Video chat? now that would be a feature!!

All in all, its one great step forward and the application is great, I was using Fring before just to be able to use skype on it, but the downside in that application was it was very laggy for me, echo’s and considerable delays in comms was really annoying and frequent. so yea its Skype from now on baby.

OnLive, together with its Mova subsidiary, lies directly at the nexus of several key trends, all of which are reshaping the way we think about and use digital media:

Salman Suhail and Mustafa Fathy discuss their recent experience launching a website and provide a plan for creating an online business

What people in the tech industry fail to realize is that with
the knowledge they have, a little extra investment of their
personal time, and practically no investment of their personal
money, they can launch incredible web products – and Twit-
ter, Facebook, and Blogger are just a few successful examples
of this. In the last two years we have worked in the online in-
dustry in the Middle East – and the one thing we would love to
see more of is young entrepreneurs working less for clients and
more for themselves.

Our website, “Mojo on the Web,” is dedicated to promoting
online entrepreneurism and encouraging others to take the risk
to starting their own business – whether just as a hobby or a full
time profession.

The Roadmap to Create a Tech Product

Stage 1: Conceptualize your Product: At this stage you have
nothing more than what sounds like an interesting idea. Put this
idea in a one page brief synopsis to see if you have a consis-
tent scope to the project. In our case with Mojo, we envisioned

creating an industry webzine specifically for online businesses
– ranging from new technologies, business processes, new de-
sign styles and UI concepts. Our target audience was defined as
both web business owners with minimal technical knowledge, as
well as techies working on the web.

Stage 2: Conceptualize your Business: At this stage you should
be taking the original concept and creating a business case for
it. For Mojo, creating financial revenue was only one of our
motivations to implement the project – and hence we had a very
simple business model i.e. simple non intrusive advertising. At
this stage begin to research various ad servers that are available,
create a short list of servers and produce a graphical representa-
tion of clicks to revenue to establish a target number of visitors
per day. Many business models beyond advertising exist for the
web including: subscription services, affiliate programs and the
sale of a physical product.

Stage 3: Design your Product: At this stage we combined the
outputs of the first two stages to create a complete product de-
sign. From a technical perspective, the product design details
are the functional specifications for this product and a complete
prototype of the front end. This is one of the most important
stages of the process – as time spent here will exponentially save
time in the later stages.

Stage 4: Design your System: Imagine that the outcome of this
stage is the blueprints to start building your dream house. In
the case of system design in software, that blueprint will consist
of UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams like use-cases,
sequence diagrams, multi-level flow charts, database diagrams
and, most importantly, making sure the system will be under
control in later stages.

Stage 5: Implement your System: Now it all comes to what kind of
tools will be used, which really depends on budget and time
constraints. In the case of Mojo, we were looking for a web pub-
lishing platform with a powerful backend content management
system (CMS) – and while we had the option to develop from
scratch, WordPress fit our requirements perfectly. If you’re
building your website in your spare time it’s good to focus on
maximizing productivity. Readymade scripts, productivity lan-
guages (such as Ruby on Rails) and platforms such as WordPress
and Joomla are all good routes.

Stage 6: Create your User Interface (UI) Design: This stage is pret-
ty much parallel with developing the backend of your system,
whether you’re going to be using that readymade CMS system
or you’re developing from scratch. Photoshop is the preferred
tool of choice – though Illustrator, Fireworks and Dreamweaver
are all great options.

Stage 7: Integrate: This stage is about combining your design and your
system. Not just that, but in our case we wanted to get our sys-
tem up and running as fast as possible, so we looked up as many
plug-ins as possible that suited our requirements
Test: What I’d really want to stress, is the importance of this
stage. We pushed the limits of our website to make sure it was
clear of unwanted bugs, whether they were coming from third
party plug-ins, inconsistencies in design or triggered from dif-
ferent browsers.

Stage 8: Silent Launch: Not all web products need this stage, but as a
webzine we couldn’t really go live without having some content
up on the site. Hence we ran the site for two months silently
– treating it as if it was live, updating it as if it was live. This had
two specific benefits: we were able to load the website up with
content and we were able to determine the amount of time we
would regularly need to provide the site to keep it maintained.
Launch: Your website launch is now a product launch – and
should be treated in the same way. Create a product launch plan
with a checklist of all the activities that need to be completed
in order to complete a launch. This will include a final project
checklist, ensuring it’s ready for the public, marketing activi-
ties press releases have been made, list of blogs to contact and
support systems in place. The purpose of all of this is to create
enough buzz and hype about your new site so that it takes off
right from the gate.

Stage 9: Iterate: The online world is a world of constant change – which
is why if you decide to stand still you will become obsolete.

Tips for Tech Entrepreneurs
· Plan before you jump: Tech entrepreneurs wiSalman Suhail and Mustafa Fathy discuss their recent experience
launching a website and provide a plan for creating an online business
th great
ideas often get bogged down trying to implement imme-
diately – worried that someone will beat them to the mar-
ket. Take time to think out your ideas before you jump and
you’ll be ready for competition.
· It’s all about cash flow: Cash flow is complicated by late
payment schemes, delivery before payment and bad cus-
tomers. Plan ahead or only a couple of bad months can put
you in hot water.
· Know the limits of your employee contract: Don’t be
fooled into thinking that everything you do belongs to the
company you work for – unless specifically stated in your
contract. The work you do in your spare time as a part-time
entrepreneur is your work and your company has no right
to it.
· Know the difference between a system and a product:
A system is the software that you will develop. This system
becomes a product only once you’ve developed a business
case for it and are willing to treat it as a product.
· Time to market and great ideas mean less then you
think: It’s not the originality of your basic idea that’s neces-
sarily important – but your ability to execute it better than
anyone else. If you’re not the first to the market, you can
learn from the mistakes of others and come out on top.
· Do not underestimate the work you can do yourself: The
best way to lower costs at the early stages of your venture
is to do as much of the work yourself as possible. This may
require you to learn new skills, but don’t hesitate.

Funny enough, I didn’t see any posts referring to this on the Windows 7 blog, but when I went to the Windows 7 page today, I found the following message and was directed to this site to get the code.

“The Windows 7 Beta is now available for download,” Microsoft said on its Web site. “Thanks for your interest and help with the beta.”

The software was supposed to be made available on Friday, but the company delayed the release after a day filled with Web site problems.

According to Macworld, Apple removed a Knowledge Base article about antivirus software compatible with Mac OS X.

The article received “a lot of attention” because it seemingly contradicted Apple’s marketing messages about malware for Mac. Michael Rose (TUAW)tried to take the kettle off the stove, noting that the article had been around for years before the Washington Post noticed it this week.

Macworld’s Jim Dalrymple spoke with Apple spokesman Bill Evans, who said “We have removed the Knowledge Base article because it was old and inaccurate. The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box.”

Even so, Evans admitted, “Since no system can be 100% immune from every threat, running anti-virus software may offer additional protection.”

The essence of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) shows major search engines that your website is better quality than that of other competing websites. When webmasters apply SEO to their websites, they need to be aware that the ranking and evaluation of their website is not done by people, but by specialized software machines that constantly scan the internet, re-evaluating existing sites, finding new ones, and ranking your website accordingly to other relevant websites.

People use search engine all the time for one simple purpose, the search for information. If your website has it, then it’ll be noticed without a doubt. But what if you have the information but your website is still goes by unnoticed? Well, it’s probably because you don’t have quality content. Or your content is in a format on the web that is unreadable to those major search engines that you hope to get noticed on.

There are two approaches to SEO, white hat SEO, and black hat SEO. White hat SEO is basically acknowledging the quality criteria that a search engine sets and delivering your content and structure accordingly, while on the other hand black hat SEO depends on technological approaches only, neglecting the key factor of peoples desire, information.

To mention a few good practices that one can do to help in getting you noticed quickly (and not to mention ever lasting results, rather than those spikes of traffic that flat lines again after a week.)

• Content: ensure that its readable by software, i.e. not in binary form (flash) or articles scanned and added to your site as a picture; search engines can’t read those (at least not yet). Ensure that your pages are COMPLETELY free from grammatical and spelling mistakes. Use a thesaurus, if for example; you’re a real estate company and in your text you are talking about “properties in Cairo”, it would also be a good practice to include in there somewhere else down the line “real estate in Cairo”, as people know that properties and real estate are the same thing, but search engine robots don’t.
• Links: if many websites tend to link to your website, this will indicate to the search engine that the Internet community is actually voting for that your website is a good resource in what it contains of information.
• Meta-tags: ensure that you have as many of these as possible, insert quality keywords and description to each page here and ensure that its correct and constant.
• Size: larger websites are usually ranked higher than smaller ones, the logic behind that is, a website with a thousand pages can be considered a reference in its category of sites (e.g.: a university website that has all scholastic studies and thesis’ online compared to one scientist who’s researches and findings are limited to his own capacity).
• Clean code: always clean up your pages from hidden or commented text that can include completely irrelevant keywords to what is actually on the page at the moment. Also write alternative text for all those images that have meaning, either an image that contains a title you don’t to remove, or a picture that has some meaning that adds to the content around it.

Theses are of course just a few of the hundreds of different criteria that you can find available at any search engine terms of service (TOS) agreement, a good knowledge of these criteria is always the best way to obtain good rankings in those various search engines.
