Hi all my name is Kerron, and basically I just wanted to share my opinion on why I think portable external hard drives are a very valuable device to have around. We all have massive amounts of data stored on our internal hard drives whether it’s PC or Mac, and if your like me, the thought of losing all my music collections, videos, photos and important software can be a terrifying experience.

Well I was fortunate (not really) to have one of those so called “Blue Screen Of Death” moments where apparently some sort of system file got corrupted, or so Windows said and for nothing it would boot into my profile. Needless to say, I have never done any sort of backing up in my life ( when I first heard the term “back up” I thought it to be a very difficult and tedious process that only people with technical knowledge could perform) which is why i never really bothered with the task.

Luckily for me I was able to take my PC to the local computer repair shop, and after a quick diagnostic ( like literally quick, the guy powered it on took one look at the error and said he’s gonna have to reformat my hard drive), he then asked if I had previously backed up my data at any point prior to the crash. I kept my cool, and with a calm, relaxed voiced I replied NO. After a very cheeky smile, he told me not to worry he would be able to retrieve my data and “back it up” to a portable external hard drive so he can restore it later. That term external hard drive had sparked my interest.

I was a bit curious to find out how it worked and was getting ready for some long tech jargon (that i would probably have to go look up after agreeing with what he said). Instead he brought out this little back box no bigger than the palm of my hand which isn’t very big, and explained all that all he needed to do was plug it into the USB port and after the windows recognises it automatically, it’s as easy as copy and pasting what ever type of data I like across to the external drive. Now the process to retrieve my data was a more complicated one (which I didn’t quite fully understand) so I won’t get into that. But I was sold on the idea of this little black box that is capable of holding my most valuable data, and the process of ” back up” was as simple as copy and paste.

After getting my PC back up an working (big smile), I decided to invest in one of those portable external hard drive (there were also larger sized ones that you can place on your desk, but I like the idea of portable data) for keeping my data safe. I was actually surprised that it was not as expensive as I thought. I paid under $100 USD for my Seagate 250gb portable external hard drive, that was actually more storage space than my internal hard drive (kind of old PC). All I have to do is plug in the external drive into the USB port and it’s as simple as drag and drop my data. Now I rest comfortably knowing my most precious data is safe from unexpected system crashed, and the best of all what i really like about these portable external hard drives are the fact that you can take them with you anywhere and they only weight a few ounces, I’ve seen cell phones weigh more than them.

I highly recommend investing in a portable external hard drive if you have never backed up your data or need more storage space for backing up data, and also if you travel alot and need access to your personal data on the go. With the recent announcement of their $100 5.1 surround sound speaker set, the Z506, Logitech has made yet another splash in the affordable sound solutions pool. While Logitech audio products have quite a bit of range on their price points (their popular Z-5500 surround sound system retails for around $400,) the company has recently sought to tap further into the “budget” market, and their X-540 speaker set did that beautifully. Much like the Z506, the X-540 is a $100 5.1 surround sound system. It was first released in late 2006 to warm critical reception, but took off in popularity as time went on. Reviewers both professional and amateur tend to agree that the X-540 delivers solid performance, particularly for a device as cheap as it is. My opinion tends to be that the most attractive part of this set is the price tag; while the speakers function well, bias can enter into the assessment of the product’s performance in that thinking “for what I paid, this is well above what I expected.” That said, I tried to review this product objectively, without factoring price too heavily into the equation.

First, the speakers set up beautifully, with the only issue I noticed being not enough cable length (you get a few feet; enough for most computer/TV setups, but setting up an entire room as a music hub could be problematic). Other than this, however, I liked the way the actual components connect to walls/platforms/monitors; their aesthetic isn’t bad either. When you get to watching movies/playing games, you notice that while the sound is clear, the output is weaker than you’d expect, both in the left/right speakers and the bass unit. As far as games and movies are concerned, this really isn’t a problem, but I wouldn’t recommend using these speakers as part of a music setup.

As far as I know, these speakers have an extremely long life, although this is somewhat stereotypical of Logitech products. I haven’t owned these speakers for more than a year, but I’ve seen reports that claim the life of these sets can exceed 3 years. Overall, the budget aspect of these speakers is what gives them their appeal, but as far as speakers are concerned, they don’t lag that far behind more expensive models in quality. While “you get what you pay for” will always be applicable to products like this, Logitech has proven that you can get away with paying a bit less while still getting a quality product.

With the introduction of the new digital paper technology, there are now a wave of new digital readers on the market. It seems that digital reader technology has finally thrown down the shackles of immaturity and become a viable way to read. In this article I am going to be looking at the Sony Reader Digital Book and outlining my opinions on it.

A Sexy Little Number
The first thing to notice with the Sony Digital Reader is its stylish design. The reader comes in a number of different colors but mine is of the dark blue variety. The reader is encased in a stylish metal shell giving it a grown-up air and a hint of sophistication. The system also comes bound in an outer case which opens and closes like a book for protection.

Down the side of the screen are the numbers 0 though 9 strategically placed to coincide with menu option locations for ease of menu navigation. Below the screen there is a zoom button and a button for placing bookmarks. A nice aspect to the reader is that there are two sets of buttons for flipping pages; one which coincides with the placement of your fingers when reading a book in landscape mode and one for when reading in portrait. This is a feature that I’m particularly impressed with and that other readers such as the Irex Iliad don’t possess. At the bottom of the reader there is a headphone jack and volume control. There is also a USB connector port and a mains connector for charging. The reader can be fitted with two additional memory cards. At the top of the reader there is a slot for both PROduo and SD cards. The device is light and compact, I can’t help but be impressed with it’s physical design.

Under the Hood!
Ok, it’s time to get down and dirty. When you flick the on switch, the reader takes about three second to power up which is very favourable in comparison to the Irex Iliad which takes about 40 seconds. When the system power up you’re presented with an attractive menu with 10 options which are as follows:
Continue reading – This is a helpful little feature that allows you to jump straight back into the book you were reading and at the correct page. Books by Title – Organise the entire library of books by title. Books by Author – Organise the library by author. Books by Date – Organise the books by date. Collections – with the software provided you’re able to create a number of categories in which to organise the books, you can then view these categories through this menu option. All Bookmarks – View bookmarks that you have placed on all books. Now Playing – It is possible to listen to MP3 music while reading a book, this is where the name of the track is placed and from where you can change track. Audio – Display the list of audio titles on the reader. Pictures – From here you can view pictures on the reader. This is a nice feature although the quality of the pictures isn’t great. Settings – Change the various setting on the reader.

The system is quite feature rich but what is it like as a reader?

Reading With the Sony Reader
My initial impressions of the reader is that it’s very comfortable, it’s lightweight and compact design means that you can easily use the book anywhere at all; while relaxing on the sofa, when in bed, when outside, on the train, bus or anywhere else. It’s basically just like a real book. This said, there are a few drawbacks that make reading from an actual book still the better option. For example the device takes a second or so to flick pages – this isn’t such a major issue but when wishing to change a number of pages at the same time it becomes a little annoying.

I have been quite impressed with the device’s battery life. Having used the device for a number of weeks I still haven’t had to charge the battery. This is however dependant on how you use the reader. If you constantly listen to mp3 tracks while reading I should imagine that the battery lasts considerably less time.

Supported Formats
The supported formats for the Sony Reader are as follows:
BbeB Book – Sony’s official format. Books of this format can be purchased online from Sony’s book store. PDF – This is Adobe’s famous format, the reader does support PDF but there are a number of issue. I will be discussing issues and solutions below. RTF – A universal document format. The Sony Connect software will automatically convert Microsoft DOC files to this format on uploading to the reader. TXT – Basic text format with no kind of formatting.

What’s the Deal with PDF?
When buying a digital reader a lot is made of a devices ability to display PDF files. What firstly has to be understood is that PDF displays content on screen exactly as it will display on the printed page. So if for example a book is designed for on an A4 page, it will loose a little quality and readability when displayed on a smaller screen. This isn’t the end of the world however and Sony have added features to make reading a PDF more comfortable. The first of these is the ability to flip the page into landscape mode. This effectively splits one page into two and produced large text size and better image quality. This however is still smaller than an A4 page is designed to be. It’s important to point out that the zoom feature does not work on the PDF format so what other options are there?

Making PDFs a Viable Option for the Sony Reader
Thankfully there are a number of free third party applications available for download that convert a large PDF file for viewing on the Sony Reader system. The best of these is called PDF to LRF converter. I have used this software extensively and find it extremely good, it’s absolutely essential for anybody with a Sony Reader.

The Sony Reader Software
The system comes with a software package for uploading and managing the titles on the Sony Reader system. Generally I find the software easy to use and well designed although there are some features that I would like adding. The first of these relates to placing books in categories. As mentioned earlier it is possible to place the books into categories to make managing large libraries easier. However, with this software as of yet there is no way to create sub-categories. For me this would be a very handy feature as I read lots of science books. Instead of creating a science category with a number of sub categories covering physics, chemistry etc. I have to create these categories separately. Well, I guess this isn’t a major issue but it’s something that I’d like to see improved upon in the future.

The software does come with the device though I believe it is a work in progress and you will probably find that at some stage you will be able to download an improved version from the Sony website.

Buying Ebooks
Sony have there own website devoted to selling ebook specifically for the Sony Reader (BBeB Books). This website works very much like Apple’s itunes and is accessed through a free software package that can be downloaded from the Sony website.

Conclusion
Using the Sony Reader I have become a real avid supporter of ebook reader technology. The amount of space I’d saved using the Sony Reader is incredible. The good thing about reading an ebook is when you have finished, you can simple delete it where as with a real book it usually sits in a corner collecting dust. Though I didn’t think I would be, the Sony Reader has turned me into a really ebook fan and even encouraged me to read more than I normally do. Would I recommend the Sony Reader? You bet I would.

It’s not necessary to use sound therapy in any formal way – we can easily benefit from listening to harmonising music in our day-to-day lives.

Certain frequencies are very powerful

There are certain frequencies of sound, especially 528hz, which are seen by a growing number of people to be very powerful as healing mechanisms.

Such music is generally created with a synthesizer and changes notes very slowly, giving the time for the body’s cells and energy systems to resonate with it.

Using music to create peace

This kind of music is wonderful to play in the home or in classrooms as background music which will create peaceful environments.

Such music can be played for kids as they go to sleep, or when they are sick.

It can also be listened to as an effortless meditation which will cleanse, gently energise, balance and align energies.

Mantras carry great power

A different type of music that is also vibrationally healing are mantras sung with music.

Mantras – sacred chants that resonate with higher truths – are often sung by artists like Deva Premal. You can hear some of her beautiful mantra music on my site under articles and ‘music to feel good’.

When you recite mantras, the vibrations of the words and their meanings raises your level of awareness and consciousness.

I have experimented with scanning chakras and the energy body before and after listening to some mantras (especially Om Tare Tuttare) and have found them very effective in cleansing and balancing the systems.

Destructive music

Needless to say, music that contains violent, depressing and negative words and vibrations can be emotionally and physically damaging.

Just as an awful sound can be painful or at least uncomfortable to our ears, music with discordant frequencies and lyrics sets up dissonant vibrations in our fields.

But it is worth noting that some music with a lot of swearing and angry lyrics can be very uplifting and inspiring….I am thinking of Eminem’s Not Afraid, in which he is pumping out empowered energies and using anger to help propel people out of despair.

There are some great DAB Hifi systems around at the moment at some very affordable prices with Sony producing many of the most popular models currently on the market.

In this article I take a look at three of the best DAB Hifi systems and highlight the main strengths and weakness of each one (although they’re all great!).

Sony CMT-EH45 DAB Micro System

This radio is very popular at the moment and is very simple and straightforward to use. The sound quality is also great for such a tiny system and the DAB radio and CD player are very clear to listen to.

One minor issue is that of the speaker cables being a little on the short side – this might prove a little frustrating if you want to move the speakers away from system itself.

However, don’t let that put you off – this really is a great little system at a very decent price – well worth a look!

Sony CMT-HX90BTR DAB With iPod Dock & Bluetooth

The Sony CMT-HX90BTR DAB system both looks and sounds great – it’s small and slick, and will certainly impress your friends!

The iPod dock function also works incredibly well – you simply plug your iPod in and you can start listening to music. A slight issue with it is that the LCD display doesn’t provide you with any details of the current song or programme being played – instead it simply states “DM Port” which is a little annoying.

Again though, this is only a minor problem – in terms of sound quality, appearance, and other features, this DAB Hifi stereo really is the business!

Sony CMT-BX70DBi DAB with iPod Dock

The Sony CMT-BX70DBi is another DAB Hifi that will impress the socks off your friends and family – it’s very stylish and modern, and best of all takes up little space.

Again, for a small system the sound quality is top notch and the iPod works great – as with the Sony CMT-HX90BTR above, it’s just a matter of plugging your iPod in and you can then start listening!

You may find the remote with this system a little difficult to get used to initially – it’s not completely intuitive to use at first, but you get the hang of it after playing around for a bit.

This is another great product from Sony at a very nice price – it’s ideally suited to those who are short of space in their front room (or wherever you want it to go), but don’t want to skimp on sound quality and appearance.

Well worth the investment!
