Have you ever found yourself constantly digging through your suitcase on a road trip to find things that you need? Packing a suitcase for a road trip is different than any other vacation because you’re staying at different places almost every night rather than settling in to one hotel for the duration. This means that if you pack like you do for a typical vacation, you’ll be driving yourself crazy packing and repacking your stuff!

Two other common headaches are leaks that stain clothing and neatly folded clothes that become pathetically wrinkled despite your best efforts. Scrubbing away at a stain in your hotel’s bathroom sink and re-ironing your clothes isn’t exactly what you had in mind for your vacation…

This tried and true method for packing a suitcase for a road trip comes courtesy of my own experience and frustrations on many road trips and is one you can apply not only to road trips, but to any vacation that involves staying in multiple hotels (like a trip around Europe).

Prepare to start packing like a pro!

Top Tips for Packing a Suitcase:

Go out and buy a bunch of sealable plastic baggies. These are for all your “leakables” – those dangerous bottles of necessary things like shampoo than end up making a mess of your suitcase every time you travel. Get them in multiple sizes including gallon, quart, and sandwich to suit your various needs. Buy a mesh or canvas laundry bag for your dirty clothes. You can use this for all your future trips to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean clothes. Get a small bottle of laundry detergent or another gentle soap for any situations where you’ll need to clean something on vacation. Decide what you’re going to wear on your trip. Next, lay out your outfits in chronological order of the days you’ll be wearing them along with any accessories and shoes. I always recommend that you try to bring the minimum number of shoes as they take up a lot of space when you’re packing a suitcase and you can usually match one pair with multiple outfits. Fold pants and skirts lengthwise and then roll from the hem of the garment up. Button buttons and close zippers before rolling anything. Fold arms behind shirts/sweaters/other tops and then roll from the bottom of the garment up, rolling so the front of the garment is on the outside. Keep each outfit together. Smooth garments as you roll them and roll them at a medium-tightness – not so loose they could fall apart and not so tight as to create wrinkles. Put all your “leakables” as well as any other toiletries, brushes, etc. in a pile. Seal each liquid/leakable in baggies to suit. I recommend keeping your shampoo, conditioner and shower gel together in one large baggie for easy showering on the road (just grab that bag and head for the bathroom). Smaller baggies are great for items like perfume. Make sure each baggie is completely sealed. Create a separate pile for your underwear, socks, and nightclothes/robe. The reason for this is that they will not only need to be accessible most of the trip – they’ll also be creating a buffer for your sealed toiletries to prevent breakage. This is one of my top tips for packing a suitcase for a road trip: It’s all about the layering. You want the things in your suitcase to be available as you need them at the top of your suitcase so you can work your way down as the trip continues. This prevents the frustrating experience of having to unpack and repack every time you need something because “it’s somewhere in here”. To do this, layer each rolled-up outfit starting with the last day of your trip (so the last day is at the bottom of your suitcase, then the next-to-last day, and so on until your first day’s outfit is on top). Place shoes in this layering process on the periphery of your suitcase, soles facing out toward the lining of the suitcase. The next step in packing a suitcase for a road trip is to put all toiletries (in baggies if they might leak) and other grooming items on top of all of your clothes so they’re available throughout your trip. Next, layer your nightclothes/robe and underwear on top – these will work as a buffer for your bottles/breakables. If your suitcase has separate section where you can put your underwear, stockings, and socks, add them to this section. If not, put them on top of everything else. Finally, place your laundry bag on top. This will ensure that your laundry bag is easily accessible so that you can place all dirty clothes in the bag as needed. When you’re packing a suitcase make sure everything is comfortable packed – not too tight (having trouble shutting it) or too loose (stuff rolling around in there). A suitcase that’s packed too tightly or too loosely will always lead to wrinkled clothing – so either streamline and cut back or, in the case of a suitcase that’s too empty, get a smaller bag for the job. If you don’t have a smaller bag, pack a couple of towels – they always come in handy and they’re lightweight.

Use these tips for packing a suitcase on your next road trip (or any vacation) and find out how much easier it is to get what you need, when you need it! To top it off, you’ll be free from spills and stains due to leaked toiletries thanks to your sealed plastic baggies and your rolled clothes will unroll wrinkle-free.
