alt=" Successful Campus Community Interventions In Reducing College Drinking" width="221" height="168" title="Successful Campus Community Interventions In Reducing College Drinking" />A successful community-wide prevention strategy targeted at off-campus settings. This is one of the first studies to focus on the total environment rather than on prevention aimed at individuals. The significant reductions in the incidence and likelihood of intoxication at off-campus parties and bars/restaurants for Safer intervention universities. Students from Safer universities were 6% less likely to drink to intoxication during the last time they were at any of the targeted settings, 9% for off-campus parties, and 15% for bars/restaurants.

There was also evidence that drinking was reduced at fraternities and sororities. These declines were equivalent to 6,000 fewer incidents of intoxication at off-campus parties and 4,000 fewer incidents at bars & restaurants during the fall semester at each intervention schools relative to controls. Furthermore, stronger intervention effects were achieved at Safer universities with the highest level of implementation. “These findings should give college administrators some degree of optimism that student drinking is amenable to a combination of well-chosen, evidence-based universal prevention strategies,” commented lead investigator Robert F. Saltz, PhD, Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE), Berkeley, CA. “Here, one set of alcohol control strategies was found to be efficacious, but other combinations may work as well, or even better. With a growing body of such evidence, and combined with strategies already shown to be effective, it will be possible to craft a comprehensive prevention program that ratchets down the harm currently produced by alcohol use on and near college campuses.” The Safer California Universities study involved 8 campuses of the University of California and 6 campuses in the California State University system. Half of these schools were randomly assigned to the Safer intervention, which took place in the fall semesters of 2005 and 2006. Student surveys were completed by undergraduates in four fall semesters (2003 through 2006) and random samples of 1,000 to 2,000 students per campus per year were analyzed. Students were asked about where they drank, whether they had gotten drunk, and whether they had engaged in so-called “binge drinking.”

They were also questioned about their grade point averages and their general health, as well as other sociodemographic characteristics. Safer environmental interventions included nuisance party enforcement operations, minor decoy operations, DUI checkpoints, social host ordinances, and use of campus and local media to increase the visibility of environmental strategies. Intervention campuses differed in their level of implementation, but all concentrated on off-campus activities for drinking.

According to Entertainment Tonight, Fonda discovered she had breast cancer a few weeks ago when a small tumor was found during a routine checkup: it was removed during a procedure a few days ago, and she says she in now “cancer free”.

Fonda, who is also a political activist and former model, came to fame in the 1960s when she starred in the films Cat Ballou and Barbarella. In 1971 she starred in Klute, for which she received her first Best Actress Academy Award. During this period she was also an active political campaigner, supporting the Civil Rights Movement and opposing the Vietnam War.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Fonda turned to fitness, and released more than 20 workout videos, many of which were later converted to DVD. These days, Fonda focuses her energies on human rights, the empowerment of women and girls, and environmental issues, although she is still producing new fitness videos and is due to star in a new film coming out next year Peace, Love And Understanding, co-starring Rosanna Arquette and Chase Crawford.

In 1994, she was named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund; in 1995 she founded the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention; and in 2001 she founded the Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health at Emory University. Fonda also serves on the board of several organizations aimed at helping women, for example she is a member of the Women & Foreign Policy Advisory Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations. The breast cancer scare coincides with her current efforts to promote her new Primetime Fitness DVDs, which will hit stores at the end of this month.

Experiments designed by Yvonne Ulrich-Lai, PhD, research assistant professor, James Herman, PhD, director of the Laboratory of Stress Neurobiology and professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at UC, and colleagues also indicated that the reduced-stress effects continued for at least seven days, suggesting a long-term benefit.

“These findings give us a clearer understanding of the motivation for consuming ‘comfort food’ during times of stress,” says Ulrich-Lai. “But it’s important to note that, based on our findings, even small amounts of pleasurable foods can reduce the effects of stress.”

The researchers provided rats twice daily access to a sugar solution for two weeks, then tested the rats’ physiological and behavioral responses to stress. Compared with controls, rats with access to sugar exhibited reduced heart rate and stress hormone levels while placed in ventilated restraint tubes and were more willing to explore an unfamiliar environment and socially interact with other rats.

Rats who were fed a solution artificially sweetened with saccharin (instead of being fed sucrose) showed similar reductions in stress responses, the researchers say, as did rats who were given access to sexually responsive partners. But sucrose supplied directly to the stomach did not blunt the rats’ stress response, the researchers say.

“This indicates that the pleasurable properties of tasty foods, not the caloric properties, were sufficient for stress reduction,” says Ulrich-Lai. Physiological responses to stress include activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, regulated by the brain structure known as the basolateral amygdale (BLA). Rats exposed to pleasurable activities, such as tasty foods and sex, experienced weakened HPA axis responses to stress, the researchers found. Lesions of the BLA prevented stress reduction by sucrose, suggesting that neural activity in the BLA is necessary for the effect.

“Our research identifies key neural circuits underlying the comfort food effect,” notes Ulrich-Lai. “Further research is needed, but identification of these circuits could provide potential strategies for intervening to prevent or curtail increasing rates of obesity and other metabolic disorders.” Funding for the research was provided by grants from the National Institutes of Health. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Many people who need a chiropractor after a car accident, a work injury, or from everyday causes of back and neck pain are unsure how to find the right chiropractor. A good chiropractor can be very valuable in regaining your health. Most cities have many chiropractors to choose from. Which one will be the best choice for you and your specific problem? First of all, you need to understand that a few chiropractors put their business ahead of patients. Asheville Chiropractor is the one who listens to patients very carefully without interrupting. To solve any problem, it is really important to understand the patient’s problem completely, and listen them very well. Then only you can easily diagnose their problems. It is important that your chiropractor is capable to translate his/her findings and diagnosis into very easily understandable terms. A good chiropractor should have excellent analytical skills, which helps in both understanding the illness of the patient and in deciphering the range of treatments available for the patients. For the chiropractor to be well known and excellent, it is essential that he/she is capable to find out the treatment or cure for even those diseases, which are not easily curable.

Chances are that if you are looking for chiropractic care, and then are in some pain. Many people will visit a chiropractor after a vehicle accident, sports injury, or in some cases simply sleeping wrong. Whatever the reason, the process of trying to find a chiropractor can be a somewhat daunting task for someone who has never visited one before. Good chiropractors should be able to handle their staff also. While visiting Asheville Chiropractic Care you should look that they be able to handle the problems of their staff as well as their patients. It may happen that chiropractors face problems in diagnosing the patient’s problems immediately. Under such conditions, it is essential that the chiropractors keep finding the exact type of the problem and the treatment for them.

Carhartt clothing is fashion with a function at a great price. When you buy a piece of Carhartt clothing you are not buying cheap apparel that will fall to bits in a few weeks’ time; Carhartt is known for its durability and exceptional comfort that can be found in its work pants, t-shirts and jackets. The whole clothing range is the key choice for individuals wanting their money to be well spent. Check out the latest range of snowboard jackets by Carhartt -stunning examples of quality and workmanship with stylish, practical designs.

If you’re looking for a pair of durable and rugged work pants, Carhartt pants may be your first choice. Because Carhartts are made for work wear, they tend to be very stiff and almost industrial-feeling. The stitching is double stitched, the material is heavy weight and the pants are not comfortable however. To fix the problem, try running your new pants through a few wash cycles. These are clothes made for work, meaning workers expect them to withstand a daily beating and stay intact. Probably the best features of these clothes are how they stand up to washing. In short, these pants are some of the most rugged and durable available today. If you work a rigorous or labor-focused job, these pants are a great choice with their heavy-weight material and double stitching. While Carhartt may have its fashion-forward streetwear line, their work clothes are clearly made for work. That said, you might not opt to wear a pair of their jeans for a night on the town, but their duck cotton pants have become very fashionable in the last few years. Carhartt pants certainly aren’t the most fashion-forward, but they’re affordable, made in the U.S. and manufactured to last. These pants will get the job done and should last you for years. So, if you’re looking for work wear that’s durable and union-made, they’re a great choice.

People looking for a Carhartt coveralls today love the versatility and deep product line that is available. There are many different options, and they fall into a variety of categories that cover just about any functionality and price range that you could be interested in. For slightly less harsh or less wet environments, you could choose a Carhartt coverall like their classic men’s duck bib. These are quilt lined and have heavy duty cotton duck that will be guaranteed to keep out the harsh temperatures. That means instead of you focusing on how cold it is, slowing down or getting sloppy, you will be able to focus on the task at hand and let your clothing and equipment work for you. For more typical construction, ranching or farming environments you may want to keep things more basic, in which case you can use their classic denim bib overalls. These are midweight, durable and rugged, with plenty of pockets and compartments so you know you will always have all of your tools, your Kevlar gloves and anything else at hand. They also feature adjustable suspenders so you can always get a great fit.

Parents also appear to be unaware of the effect the stress they have to bear is having on their children. A growing number of young children are describing emotional and health consequences typically linked to stress.

Norman B. Anderson, PhD, American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) chief executive officer and executive vice president, said: America is at a critical crossroads when it comes to stress and our health. Year after year nearly three-quarters of Americans say they experience stress at levels that exceed what they define as healthy, putting themselves at risk for developing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and depression.

Stress is hurting our physical and emotional health and contributing to some of the leading causes of death in this country. People are also saying they have difficulty implementing the changes they know will decrease their stress and improve their health. Yet, our health care system is not adequately addressing this issue or providing the behavioral health treatments that can help Americans. All of us, including the medical community, need to take stress seriously since stress could easily become our next public health crisis.

The impact on children
Overweight or obese children were found to have significantly higher incidences of stress; most said their parents were always or often stressed four weeks prior to being surveyed. This link between overweight/obesity and stress also exists among adults.

31% of overweight/obese children worry a great deal or a lot, while 14% of children of normal body weight do the same. 36% of overweight/obese children worry about their looks, compared to 11% of normal-weight kids.

39% of overweight/obese children say their parents are stressed out often or always, compared to 30% of normal-weight kids.

The survey identified a clear link between overweight in children and physical/emotional health consequences linked to stress, and the unhealthy management of stress. When asked whether they had experienced any of the following during the previous twelve months, this is how they responded:
* Have you had trouble falling asleep?
Overweight children 48%. Normal weight children 33%.
* Do you get headaches?
Overweight children 43%. Normal weight children 28%.
* Have you been eating too much or too little?
Overweight children 48%. Normal weight children 16%.
* Have you been feeling angry or getting into fights?
Overweight children 22%. Normal weight children 13%.
* Do you eat to make yourself feel better when you are stressed or worried about something?
Overweight children 27%. Normal weight children 14%.
* Do you take a nap to make yourself feel better when you are stressed or worried about something?
Overweight children 26%. Normal weight children 15%.

The effect stress is having on families
When asked to rate their levels of stress from nothing (0) to maximum (10), 32% of parents rated theirs at 8 to 10, what the authors of the report describe as extreme levels of stress. The vast majority of parents say they are enduring levels of stress which go beyond their definition of healthy. The average stress score reported by all parents in the survey was 6.1. Those who described their stress levels as healthy scored an average of 3.9.

69% of respondents believe that managing stress is either very or extremely important. Unfortunately, and perhaps worryingly, only 32% feel they are doing either a very good or excellent job of managing their stress. The majority of the children of parents enduring very high levels of stress say there is a negative impact on the family.

Parental unawareness of the impact of stress on the family could have far-reaching consequences on each member’s emotional and physical short-term and long-term health. While 69% of stressed parents say the impact on their offspring is zero or very slight, only 14% of children say their parent’s stress does not upset or bother them. 34% of kids reveal that they know that when their parent(s) shout it is due to stress or worry.

17% of children who said that a parent is perpetually stressed reported having a lot of stress themselves, compared to 2% of children who said their parents are never stressed.

Below are some more highlighted figures revealed by the survey:
* 47% of tweens (aged 8 to 12) and 33% of teens report feeling sad
* 36% of tweens and 43% of teens claim to feel worried
* 25% of tweens and 38% of teens claim to feel frustrated when their parents are stressed
* 56% of parents find that getting their family members to eat healthily is an ordeal
* 54% of parents say they find getting their family to be physically active requires either some or a lot of effort
* 36% of tweens and 66% of teens listen to music when they are stressed
* 56% of tweens and 41% of teens play computer/video games when they are stressed
* 34% of tweens and 30% of teens watch television when they are stressed

Katherine C. Nordal, PhD, APA’s executive director for professional practice, said: even though children know when their parents are stressed and admit that it directly affects them, parents are grossly underestimating the impact that their stress is having on their children. It’s critical that parents communicate with their children about how to identify stress triggers and manage stress in healthy ways while they’re young and still developing behavioral patterns. If children don’t learn these lessons early on, it could significantly impact their physical health and emotional well-being down the road, especially as they become adults.

Many isoflavones act as phystoestrogens – nonsteroidal plant compounds that have estrogenic effects – in humans and other mammals. Isoflavones are antioxidants. They have been found to have cancer fighting qualities in several studies. Isoflavones can be found almost exclusively in the bean (Fabaceae/Leguminosae) family.

Researcher Anne Weaver, said: this study was unique in that we looked at specific subtypes of breast cancer, and found a suggestion that menopausal status may play a role in risk. Weaver and team compared data on 611 healthy females and 683 diagnosed with breast cancer. They gathered information on their eating habits via a food frequency questionnaire which measured isoflavones dietary (not supplemental) intake. They divided isoflavones ingestion into three groups.

The team discovered that the women who consumed the most isoflavones were about 30% less likely to develop an invasive breast tumor than those with very low consumption. The high isoflavones intake women also had a 60% lower risk of developing a Grade 1 tumor.

The scientists made the following observations related just to premenopausal women:
* A 30% lower risk of Stage 1 disease among the highest isoflavone consumers
* A 70% lower risk of developing a tumor bigger than 2cm among the highest isoflavone consumers
* A 60% lower risk of developing Stage 2 breast cancer among the highest isoflavone consumers

The lower risks listed above were only observed among the premenopausal women; not the postmenopausal ones. Weaver and team stressed that further studies and confirmation are needed and that their findings are not authoritative.

While the numbers of teenagers using communication technology like cell phones and internet is increasing, there is little public health knowledge about how excessive use may be linked to health risks, although new research is beginning to emerge in this area, for example last week, delegates at another conference heard about how bedtime texting was linked to disturbed sleep and mood in teenagers.

With his colleagues, Frank, who is also a family doctor, director of a local health department and of a substance abuse prevention coalition, set out to discover what proportion of teenagers were engaging in “hyper-texting”, that is sending 120 text messages or more during a school day, and “hyper-networking”, that is using online social networking sites for at least 3 hours per school day, and how this was linked to health.

For the study, they carried out a cross-sectional survey of 4,257 students attending high schools in an urban Midwestern county. The survey included questions taken from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, with some added items to cover use of communication technology and other health topics.

The results showed that 19.8 per cent of teens were engaging in hyper-texting, and 22.5 per cent were not texting at all. Similarly, 11.5 per cent of teens were engaging in hyper-networking, while 22.2 per cent said they did not engage in any online social networking.

The researchers found that hyper-texters were:
* 40 per cent more likely to have tried cigarettes,
* Twice as likely to have tried alcohol,
* 43 per cent more likely to binge drink,
* 41 per cent more likely to have used illicit drugs,
* 55 per cent more likely to have been in a physical fight,
* Nearly 3.5 times more likely to have had sex, and
* 90 per cent more likely to report having had four or more sexual partners.

And they found that hyper-networkers were:
* 62 per cent more likely to have tried cigarettes,
* 79 per cent more likely to have tried alcohol,
* 69 per cent more likely to binge drink,
* 84 per cent more likely to have used illicit drugs,
* 94 per cent more likely to have been in a physical fight,
* 69 per cent more likely to have had sex, and
* 60 per cent more likely to report having had four or more sexual partners.

The researchers also found that hyper-texting and hyper-networking was also more prevalent among minority students, females, students living in households where there was no father living at home, and with lower socioeconomic status.

After taking demographic factors into account, hyper-texting and hyper-networking was also linked to perceived stress, having suicidal thoughts, obesity, disordered eating behavior, missing school due to illness, having lower self-rated health, feeling unsafe at school, not getting enough sleep, and parental permissiveness.

The researchers found that not texting or social networking was linked to better health outcomes. They concluded that: “Excessive use of communications technology among teens is related to higher levels of health risk behaviors and poorer health outcomes.” In a media statement, Frank described the results as a “wake-up call for parents”, and that they should be keeping their children safe not only by discouraging texting while driving but also by discouraging too much use of the cell phone and social websites:
