Here in Canada, we often associate fall with stunning colours as the leaves turn; pumpkin-flavoured everything and, the return of layers (and more layers) as temperatures begin to drop. For us Canadians this can mean anything from frosty gusts of wind to freezing rain to bright and sunny days spent outside. This translates into a somewhat erratic beauty regimen, as skin can be dry one day; then in need of serious SPF the next. Combine that with our need to repair after the damage of the summer months (we all love the sun) and autumn becomes the time to get into a healthy beauty routine.

Here in Canada we understand our seasons, but what happens when your fall is just as hot as summer, like in Egypt, or when it’s dry, cool and dusty, like in Uganda? Read on to learn how women around the world adjust their beauty routines for autumn.

After posing in the InStyle photo studio at the Toronto International Film Festival, Dakota Fanning posted the image on her Insta feed with this comment: “Is this even me? I’m not sure, but I’m goin with it. #tiff2016”

We asked the star of American Pastoral about the shot when we chatted with her on Saturday. “It’s so unfortunate that we can never see ourselves as others see us,” she said. “We look at ourselves in a mirror and you pick out things you don’t like and then other people look at you and see none of those things. So with that picture, I thought I looked good! You always hope you look good in pictures and seven times out of 10 you don’t look the way you want to look.” The 22-year old actress said that she’s well aware of the pressures women feel when it comes to living up to some ideal beauty standard, but added she has a pretty healthy perspective. “My sister did a film called the Neon Demon, which is about beauty and beauty standards and how the most beautiful people in the world hate something about themselves. It’s just human nature. Nobody is above insecurity but for me I try to accept this is the body I’m born with and it’s what I’m working with.”

Last night, at Alexander Wang‘s Spring 2017 show at New York Fashion Week, the designer did what can only be called the fashion equivalent of a surprise album (a la Bey) and closed the show by unveiling an 84-piece capsule collection with Adidas Originals.

Between the star-studded front row (Kylie Jenner, Tyga, Nicki Minaj, Pamela Anderson, Zoe Kravitz, Madonna, Skrillex), the epic #WANGFEST after-party (featuring McDonalds and 7/11 pop-up trucks and performances by CL, Travis Scott and Desiigner) and the surprise announcement, it’s safe to say that Wang will go down as a major highlight of fashion week this season. Oh and did we mention that the surfer/skater girl-inspired hair at the show involved 18 (!!!) models getting their hair bleached and chopped pre-runway? Hairstylist Guido Palau told us it’s Wang’s persuasiveness that makes the models willing to go for a new look. “I’m always amazed, actually, how Alex has got the power,” said Palau. Same.

We love TIFF for its films, but like any other great awards shows, we’re equally enamoured by the style the stars flaunt. Whether the actors were attending their film premiere party or strutting their stuff on the Hudson’s Bay Striped Carpet, they pulled out all the stops. With Jennifer Connelly’s sexy-sleek black zippered look and Dakota Fanning in her glorious emerald gown snapped in the middle of the street, these actors are slaying as if they’re attending the Oscars. Toronto is magical in the summer. But when a heat wave descends upon the city, in early September, as the Toronto International Film Festival begins, The 6ix feels like a sultry island.

Good timing for sister-publication Toronto Life to host its annual Best Dressed event (its “6th,” no less!) at Momofuku, at the corners of bustling University and Richmond. Attendees spread out over the three-storey Shangri-La Hotel location. Upstairs at Daisho, guests sampled wedge and corn salad, pakora sammies, plus spoons of pickled eggplant while drinking Dark and Stormys mixed with Gosling’s Rum. #TheEstéeEdit photo booth made catwalk stars out of anyone who dared to step inside. Even outside on the patio, temperatures peaked in the low 30s.

While there, we spotted several of this year’s Best Dressed individuals: Krystal Koo, Roz Weston and Katherine Holland, Kardinal Offishall, Stella Alexandru, Parambir Keila as well as Judith Maria Bradley.

Also mingling about were St. Joseph Media Chairman Tony Gagliano, Toronto Life publishers past, David Hamilton, and present, Ken Hunt, as well as EIC Sarah Fulford and Stylebook editor (who produces the best dressed list) Maryam Sanati. And at 8 p.m. despite the heat, we could not resist a bowl of ramen noodles before taking off to the next TIFF party.

How many colours do you think the average person can see, approximately? If you guessed one million, you’re right! Which sounds insane, doesn’t it? One million different colours! However, a small number of people are #blessed enough to be able to see more than that, and Maureen Seaberg, a writer on sensory experience, is one of those people. Seaberg happens to be a tetrachromat, which means she has the genetic ability to see up to 100 million shades that the rest of us can’t see. One. Hundred. Million.

M.A.C. wanted to pick her brain (duh, don’t you?), so they collaborated with Seaberg on their latest line, Liptensity. The range will be a permanent addition to M.A.C’s 14 other textures and over 250 colours. WWD says, “The range, which comes in 24 shades, contains high-intensity chromatic pigment that yields more pigment than any of M.A.C’s existing lipsticks. It’s being billed as the most technologically advanced lip product to date.”

“It’s a tech story; it’s not a fun, frivolous collection were doing,” James Gager, senior vice president and group creative director of M.A.C., said. “It is super, super saturated, undeniable colour load in this lipstick.” So how exactly is it different from M.A.C’s already super-pigmented shades? According to Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president, global product development at MAC Cosmetics, “Liptensity contains pre-saturated pigment combined with a clear base — unlike most lipstick bases that are more opaque or “muddier” — to give a “true” colour. WWhen people say that the ‘colour stays true,’ it’s not always true because it acts with your own chemistry.” M.A.C worked with Seaberg to tweak the shades and remove any undertones that made colour look muddy. Cool, right?

Well this is just the best. We know it’s too early in the week to call it, but the makeup at Desigual‘s Spring 2017 show has to be the best makeup at New York Fashion Week. Definitely so far, but it’s hard to picture anything topping this in the coming days. From the dog filter to the flower crown filter, the show saw models walking down the runway looking like IRL versions of our fave features on Snap. What’s not to love?

The popcorn may have been stale, but the gummy bears and Aquafina were flowing last night at TIFF Soirée—a fundraiser for TIFF’s charitable initiatives, and a kick-off to the festival—where Michael Fassbender was the guest of honour. Wearing a bright blue Gucci suit and sporting a ginger beard, Fassy took to the stage in Cinema 1 of the Bell Lightbox to do an on-stage chat with Cameron Bailey, TIFF’s Artistic Director about his career. Here are five things we learned about the dreamy thespian.

He loves a good nap.
Though he plays young Magneto in the X-Men movies—and wears the shit out of grey sweats while doing so—Fassbender says his real super hero power is powernapping, which he often does when he has breaks while filming. “I could just lie down on this stage, if it goes that way.”

Director Steve McQueen hated Fassbender the first time they met.
“I think he said I was arrogant? I don’t understand. I guess maybe I was a little defensive. I hadn’t been working a lot. I thought I came across well but that just goes to show how much I know,” he said. He won the part of Irish nationalist Bobby Sands in Hunger and went on to collaborate with McQueen two more times, in Shame (hellooooo, full frontal!) and 12 Years a Slave.

He would do a full-on comedy and has spoken to Seth Rogen about it.
Fassbender is a fan of Rogen’s work and met him when he threw a blueberry at the comedian at a dinner. He then did an impersonation of Rogen during their time together on Steve Jobs who said, “I thought we’d work together at some point but thought it would be on one of my movies.” Perhaps Pineapple Express 2?

He toggles between two methods to get to an emotional place where he needs to cry for a scene.
He either tries to remember something sad or traumatic and re-live it or just relaxes physically and mentally and focuses. “You exercise that muscle over many years and go into that state, and it becomes a trigger. So sometimes I just need to say a sentence to myself that would trigger it. I pray to relatives that are dead and I ask them to look out for me if I’m going into a scene like that. You hope that you’ll get to that place truthfully because it’s horrible to pretend cry.”

The toughest role he’s done to date is Steve Jobs.
When the dense, mountainous script arrived, he felt that the role was not for him (he says he’s a slow at learning lines), but signed on after encouragement from his agent and his father. Still, he tried to get out of it in the rehearsal stages. “I would tell my driver, ‘If I put my arm in the door and slam it, it should cause a break and it should get me out of this gig.'” But with mockneck and dad jeans on, he persevered and landed an Oscar nom.

The chat was followed by a cocktail party upstairs at Malaparte, where Fassbender popped in and was escorted around to all the VIP sponsor areas such Mundy Marketing Group, Chinawest Filmmakers Alliance and Superfan Nav Bhatia for introductions and photo opps. While mini burgers, oysters and cups of french fries were doled out, we patiently waited for our moment to embarrass ourselves and ask for a photo, but it was not be. Fassy bailed by 9:30PM. Shame.

Details: It’s a five-step procedure includes cleansing, exfoliation with a sugar scrub, and extractions that aren’t painful thanks to a high-frequency wand that loosens the follicle so it comes out more easily that a traditional pinching technique. No waxing this round—you need about a week in between appointments to make sure the area isn’t irritated.

Risk of aesthetician shaming: Low. Mildly insulting you (the facial equivalent of your dentist asking about your flossing habits) when your pants are off and your vag is on the main stage is out of the question.

Highlight: One of the final steps is applying a mask, and then leaving it on for a new minutes, which is lol.

Chest and back

Much like Starbucks’ secret menu, Gee Beauty doesn’t list this service, but regular clients request it, and can apply it to other areas of the body as well. The gist: the treatment involves elements of Gee’s Medi Multi Supreme facial to target dark spots, brighten dull areas and hydrate parched skin.

Acolytes: Brides or anyone with a surplus of strapless tops.

Details: Things kick off with a double cleanse, followed by microdermabrasion, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to target dark spots, an Intraceuticals oxygen treatment to brighten skin, and a hydrating mask.

Risk of aesthetician shaming: High. Depending on your exfoliating habits, you may be on the table awhile because the microdermabrasion portion takes longer if you haven’t sloughed off your dry skin lately.

Highlight: The moment when the aesthetician tells you that the IPL won’t hurt. Unlike the feeling of elastic snapping which happens with other devices, this one cools the skin simultaneously so you don’t feel a thing.

Feet 

Post-sandal season, feet need a major overhaul, and a regular pedicure won’t cut it. You need a foot facial. So march over to the Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie to get one, and you will no longer need to hide your feet.

Acolytes: Wine snobs (the brand’s skincare is infused with resveratrol)

Details: Way more intense than a standard pedi, your feet and legs get a full-service facial that includes regular pedicure stuff  like polish removal and cuticle work, and not-so-regular pedicure stuff like exfoliation with grapes (a Caudalie signature), and a 10-minute mask.

Risk of aesthetician shaming: Low. We had bike grease on our legs, which our aesthetician didn’t seem phased by, and actually washed off using grapes.

Highlight: Being served treats like baklava and tea, while our legs were wrapped in a warm blanket.

In case you don’t frequent the internet (in which case, thanks for finding us somehow!) and aren’t aware, the Yeezy Season 4 show took place yesterday at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island in New York. In fact, the show happened outside an old, abandoned smallpox hospital that was once quarantined. Chic. The location was kept a secret (maybe because guests would be freaked out otherwise…?), and editors and celebs were only given the location of the bus stop where they were to be picked up and shuttled over.

Kim, Kylie and Kendall were all in attendance (Kylie with her new bleached blonde hair, of course) but they (again, of course) showed up an hour and fifteen minutes after everyone else, and were being filmed for an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Celebs like Pharrell, Spike Jonze, La la Anthony, Desiigner, Fabolous and Pusha T were also in the crowd.

Upon entering the park, guests could purchase white or neon yellow shirts that read “Season 4” for $75—whereas these shirts were given away for free in the past. Kanye collaborated with Vanessa Beecroft again this season, and presented a collection of skin-toned leotards, crop tops, leggings and shorts. Sofia Richie, Chanel Iman and Teyana Taylor (the super-ripped star of the “Fade” video) were among the models who walked the show. However, only some of the models actually walked. Many stood in the center of the field for the duration of the show and…fainted due to the heat.

From heels breaking to models fainting, Yeezy Season 4 was certainly one for the books, and while it’s widely being referred to as a “disaster,” we hope a couple of minor hiccups don’t overshadow any conversations about the actual show or clothing.

Wireless earphones

Looks like the rumours are true. We can officially say buh-bye to headphone jacks and hello to Bluetooth earbuds (aka Lightning AirPods). But if you so wish to use your wired headphones, you can also do that too with the not-so-elegant-looking adaptor that is included.

Home button
While the home button is still very much present, it has some new features. Not only will it offer the same pressure sensitive technology as the MacBook touchpads, but it will also deliver the similar haptic feedback (read: recreates the sense of touch by applying vibration back to you) to the Apple Watches.

Water and dust resistant

While we’re totally stoked about the water-resistant phones, who knew dust was such a problem?

Two new shades

The phone will come in two new colours shades: Jet Black and matte Black.

Stronger camera game
Blurry images, no more. The iPhone 7 offers a new camera system, which features a larger single lens and Optical Image Stabilization. Apparently it’s as good as the cameras the pros use. However, if you’re willing to shell out more money, the iPhone 7+ features a dual-camera set-up – so higher quality pics.

Release dates

You can start pre-ordering your iPhone 7 on September 9th (that’s today!). The first shipment will be on September 16th. The price of the iPhone 7 starts at $899, while the iPhone 7+ starts at $1,049.

You’ll be able to reply to your iMessages via Scribble, which is a feature where you manually write individual letters that translate into text form.

It’s heeeeere. Rihanna’s highly anticipated Fenty Puma collection launches worldwide tomorrow morning, after debuting to rave reviews at New York Fashion Week this past February. Who can forget the black lips, the Hadids, and the lace-up everything? We’ve been dreaming about owning the entire collection since then, and as of September 7th, we (and you!) can.

“This collection is not only a representation of who I am and how I dress, but also pushes the boundaries of what I wanted to create with PUMA” says Rihanna, “I wanted to take PUMA to a new place with something unpredictable and unexpected. That Pippa Middleton. She caught our attention in a white, crepe, Alexander McQueen at her sister Kate’s wedding and has been in the style spotlight ever since. Thought Pippa owns the floral dress, and can do a gala like few others, she can rock a pair of jeans too. Pippa is the opposite of so many style stars in our newsfeeds these days because she possesses a sweet, conservative style. And with a wedding to plan, it’s time to start waging bets on just what she will wear down the aisle…but for now in honour of her 33rd birthday we’re looking back on ten of Pippa’s best looks thus far.

Many campaigns have worked to normalize the discussion around mental health (Bell’s Let’s Talk and CAMH’s One Brave Night among them). But one thing that really reaches the masses is when a celebrity speaks out about his or her struggle, and over the past week, two huge stars have unabashedly taken time-outs from the stage in order to take care of themselves—and to spread the message that it’s OK to have mental illness; it doesn’t make you weak.

First, Selena Gomez announced that she would be taking a break from her career to deal with anxiety, depression and panic attacks associated with lupus (an autoimmune condition from which she suffers). Then, Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello left the stage early during a performance under the guise of a wardrobe malfunction, later revealing, on Snapchat, that the cause was excessive anxiety. She even tweeted:

Anyone who has ever suffered from anxiety—whether temporary or chronic—knows the feeling of wanting to crawl into bed and stay there until things seem OK again. And somehow when these women who seem to have it all come out and say that they actually don’t have their shit together, it is encouraging to us. (And we must give a shout-out to Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence and Taylor Swift, all of whom have gone public about their struggles with anxiety, too.) By focusing on their health, it normalizes the conversation and gives us the courage to take care of ourselves (and be vocal about it). One can’t help but wonder whether more openness could’ve helped musical wonders of the past who turned to addictions and those who had publicly documented breakdowns.

These women deserve serious props for using their stardom for good. Now we can do our part to tell it like it is—and, dammit, take those mental health days!

“My beauty style in high school began on a low. I had a shitty perm and wore frosted pink lipstick. By the end of grade 9, listening to nothing but the radio station CFNY, I was fully influenced by goth and new wave, complete with undercut, red lipstick (L’Oreal’s “British Red Coat”) and baby powder to make my skin paler. At the end though, as seen in this grad photo, I was in a 60s mod groove. I had the requisite geometric bob, which I parted in the middle, something I would never do today. I also wore a cat eye done in liquid liner and would paint my lashes on beneath the bottom row, completely inspired by Twiggy. And god I miss that collagen.”

My sheer pink lip gloss, soft peach blush and brown mascara was an homage to these fresh-faced beauty looks. I was also obsessed with Noxema (thanks to my granny) and used it religiously every night. By day I slathered on Clinique Dramatically Different moisturizer (thanks Mom), and on occasion still do now. In high school, I let down my signature grade school ponytail in favour of a classic side-part, a style that has stayed with me. Clearly “signature” is my style. There’s something about looking at a photo of yourself in high school and seeing the woman you’ve become in the mirror. To me, that’s timeless beauty.”

“My beauty look was 90s goth-lite. My hair was SUPER short and black, a la Angelina Jolie in Hackers. My look was mostly black eyeliner, lined INSIDE my lids, lots of pale makeup (I even used corn starch at one point) and the most plucked eyebrows ever. I dyed my hair jet black but did lots of other colours throughout highschool. I also had a nose ring, lots of ear piercings and many more piercings to come. I wish I still had the confidence to cut my hair that short, I am terrified to even cut my long hair past my shoulder now. I wish I hadn’t plucked my eyebrows so much, but THANK GOD they grew back.”

“In grade nine, I needed to find my tribe, so I embraced the preppie group and cut my hair into a bowl cut a la Molly Ringwald. It was awful. When I got back to school in grade 10 I fell hard for this long haired, Metallica-worshipping, skateboarding ‘freak,’ and regretted that haircut even more. I look at this picture and think of a girl who fought hard for the hair (even if the boy had moved away and left her very sad). The eye liner is amazing. “Transport yourself, if you will,” Kate Bosworth says in a soothing voice that sounds like she’s rehearsing lines for the role of a yoga instructor or spa attendant. The 33-year-old actress is calmly looking at her view of northwest Montana from her living room couch, trying to describe the family of mountains in front of her. “We’re near Glacier Park,” she says of the remote piece of land on which her property sits (her primary residence is in L.A., where she lives in a mid-century home with her husband, Michael Polish). “We’re surrounded by trees and a lake that has pure glacial water…everything that is L.A. and New York—that busy, chaotic and manic energy—falls away completely when I’m here,” she says. “It’s truly my favourite place on earth.” Minutes before our phone call, Bosworth was enjoying some rare do-nothing time. Her agenda included snacking on cherries and cookies, listening to folk music on her antique jukebox and casually flipping through furniture catalogues.

This slice of serenity is far from her norm. The actress has been longing for some downtime ever since she wrapped Before I Wake (she stars alongside Room’s Jacob Tremblay), a horror movie that’s scheduled to hit theatres Sept. 9. She also finished filming her star spots on two TV shows: a Second World War mystery series called SS-GB and the second season of The Art of More. On the latter show, which was filmed in Montreal, Bosworth plays icy Roxanna Whitman, a highly competitive auction house exec. She describes the fierce-as-Frida-Kahlo character as a “femme fatale” and “manipulative.” Comparing Whitman to Bosworth is like comparing apples to elephants, but she has been able to find some common ground with her caustic character. “When it comes to my career, being vindictive or harsh doesn’t suit me or anyone else that I work with at all,” she explains. “But you can find her resolve and passion in a lot of what I do.”

Bosworth’s onscreen roles — be it Julianne Moore’s or Robert De Niro’s daughters in Still Alice and Heist — are the kind of Type A characters she’s had a lot of experience playing. At the tender age of 15, Bosworth made her debut riding a champion thoroughbred in The Horse Whisperer, in which she acted alongside Kristin Scott Thomas, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Redford (who directed the movie). At 19, she took on the role of rising surf savant Anne Marie in Blue Crush, a.k.a. the movie that had agents begging to represent her. The anti-Baywatch, the film was based on the 1998 article about young women in Maui who ride the waves (written by Susan Orlean) and went on to motivate a new generation of thrill-seeking board babes and even designers, such as Tommy Hilfiger, who were deeply inspired by Bosworth’s neoprene wardrobe.

Off-screen, Bosworth’s influence on fashion is far more potent. Aside from past side hustles as the face of Calvin Klein Jeans and Coach, it is her red carpet and social media moments that have trend followers living for her looks. Her Instagram account, @katebosworth, jumps from being subtle to glamorous with each scroll and is so fastidiously curated that most of the posts look like a series of outtakes from magazine shoots. The feed includes a shot of Bosworth in a freshly fitted Jason Wu dress on the streets of New York, a black and white pic of her new Burberry boots and a slow-motion video of her stunning Met Ball look (which included a Grecian-style Dolce & Gabbana gown replete with bejewelled laurel wreath). In fact, Bosworth’s Insta feed is more fashion-conscious than most models’ accounts. Unlike many actresses who would rather walk on hot coals than endure another red carpet, Bosworth treats clothes as signifiers and symbols.

When it comes to dressing up, I don’t have any anxiety at all—it’s actually something I really enjoy,” Bosworth says. “It’s the quickest way to communicate a feeling — culturally and individually, clothing can represent something about our time or what is going on inside us. Fashion is the most immediate way to see something evolve.” What she pulls out of her closet is influenced by emotion and geography. “In New York and Paris, I can push the envelope in terms of fashion,” she says. “I can be riskier with my choices there. The type of choices you see on the streets there are more bold in terms of expression. L.A. is more casual; I pull back a little bit in terms of what I wear.” She also urges people to get to know their own shape. “I’ll look at someone like Beyoncé and say, ‘That dress is so amazing on her,’ but I know that my body type is completely different. I have more of a boyish figure, so anything that’s too loose or shapeless isn’t the most flattering for me.”

While Bosworth is aware that her outfits create a storm of likes and follows, the actress is on the fence about the popularity contests the online world encourages. “This need for approval is too overwhelming and it’s debilitating on social media—it is so much more accelerated now than when I started out,” she says. “When I was about 21, I remember reading comments about me that were horrifying. I felt like I was standing in a roomful of people that were talking mean-spiritedly about me. It was then that I made a conscious decision to stay away from that negativity.”

Although she’s been in the limelight for nearly 15 years and has starred in blockbusters such as Superman Returns, Bosworth has still managed to keep TMZ-leeching attention away from her. Her time spent in Montana seems like part of her big plan to recalibrate and reassess her goals.

In many ways, Bosworth feels that Hollywood is going through a makeover, spurred by the rise of streaming and the increase of independent projects that are making waves on big and small screens. She and Polish are taking advantage of the sea change, producing an upcoming series about a contract gun for hire slated to be called The Kill (in which she may be starring).

“Part of what I find interesting right now is this world of immediacy and the ease with which we swipe from one topic to another,” she says. “I’m trying to figure out what it means to be a kid or a teen right now—like my 18-year-old stepdaughter—who can read an article on the wildflowers in Montana and then swipe to how many gay men were killed by ISIS. How do we really process that properly when it is paired and presented in this simple platform? I wonder how much it is settling. If it’s not settling, then what does it mean to be an unsettled culture?”

Although many of these questions still need answers, Bosworth is sure that the next generation has the upper hand. A lot of this has to do with the way women are portrayed on film. “In the past, there have definitely been some moments when I’ve had [movie] executives ask, ‘Can the hemline be raised on her skirt?’” she says. “It was frustrating, but things are changing.”

“Nowadays [younger people] are raised on really good TV…and because of good scripts, there’s a positive movement materializing with mature, more complex female characters. Like a lot of people, I think feminism is a call for equality. It will continue to grow only if it is being discussed.”

When it comes to taking stock of her aspirations, Bosworth has identified her personal priorities—many of which eclipse all the hype and adulation that come with premieres, followers, fans or box office sales. “At the end of my life, the thing I’m going to ask myself is, ‘Did I love really well? Was I loved well?’ Those are the things that are most important to me,” she says. “If I feel like I’m successful in those two things, then I think I’ve lived a pretty happy life.”

A new season calls for a new you—or at least an updated profile picture.
