A new version of Family Tree PHP is now released: version 1.0. It is only a beta version for now, but it contains a lot of major improvements, including the long awaited add and edit functionality, which makes this version a complete genealogy program for stand alone use. That’s why a leading zero of the version number is now turned into a 1.

Improvements:

Persons, families, events, sources, repositories and citations can be added and edited directly, without the need for a gedcom import.

Language codes for non default languages are shown in the url, which enables search engines to index pages separately for all languages.

Ancestors reports now contain all children of the ancestors, with links between generations (from child to parents and from parents to child) and between partners.

Descendants reports now contain links from child to parents.

Privacy flags are no longer calculated after gedcom import, but on the fly; they are cached and reset when the cache is reset; they are also updated when records are added, edited or deleted.

Cron job functionality added for maintainance.

Separate stastics for each tree.

Pages can have child pages linked to them.

Users can choose to send a comment only to the admin, without it being stored in the database.

When a tree is deleted, the bookmarks linked to this tree are also deleted.

Many more minor improvements…

No longer for free

As I announced earlier, from this version on, Family Tree PHP will no longer be free. The reasons for this I have stated in the earlier announcement. The price will be 14.95 EUR, but for this beta release the price is only 9.95 EUR. So if you buy a license now, you get a discount of 5.00 EUR. Language and template packages can still be downloaded for free and anyone who provides a translation or template set for this new version, gets a free license (or a refund if you already purchased a license). In addition to that, anyone who in the past made a donation, can contact me to get a free license too.

How to update:

Update instructions

Because the database structure is very much changed, it is recommended to do a new gedcom import after you have updated to this version. If you do not, no data will be lost, but some data might not be in the right fields.

I think I need another 2 weeks and then the first beta version of Family Tree PHP 1.0 will be released. However, I have just decided on a major change, which some of you will probably not enjoy so much. I have decided to stop giving the script away for free.

My reasons for this are the following:

The script is getting more and more complex and it takes ever more time to develop it further and keep doing this right. If I want to keep doing this, I need to get some money out of it. Otherwise I cannot justify spending this much time and need to start spending it on doing something else.

There are not enough donations coming in to provide this money.

Some of you have suggested that I should ask money for support only, or offer a paid hosting solution, or else. I have considered this, but I have decided not to go this way, because I think it best to seek a correlation between the quality of the script and the money I get out of it. If I should get my money from support or hosting, it would be in my interest to make the script more difficult to use or to install, so that more people would need support or special hosting. I have seen this already with donations: the more problems there were with the script, the more users were willing to donate. When the script became more stable, donations became less and less. So this would not be good, not for me, neither for you. We all want a high quality script, that is easy to install and easy to use. When each user pays a small price for the right to use Family Tree PHP, I can afford to spend more time developing. And it will be in my interest to keep you all happy. It will be in my interest to keep the group that needs support as small as possible, and no longer the other way round.

About the terms: I have decided on a price of 14.95 EUR. Registered users will of course get free updates and bug fixes untill version 2.0 is released (which will not be within a year) and will then get a special upgrading price. Anyone who provides a complete translation for version 1.0 may use the script for free and there will be a 30 day money back garantuee for everyone.

I understand that I will now lose some of you as users. I hope most of you will accept this decision and stay using Family Tree PHP for a long time to come. Anyway, I am looking forward to your reactions.

2 more bugs have been fixed in version 0.6. When a surname began with a diacritic character and the surname prefix setting was set to -1, the first character was handled as a surname prefix during a gedcom import, even if it was not a lowercase character. And there was still a problem with adding and editing multimedia records.

A new corrected version (0.6g) is now available for download.

If you have version 0.6(a/b/c/d/e/f), you only have to upload the changed files:

/core/addmedia.php

/core/editmedia.php

/includes/classes/gedcom.php

If you still have an older version than 0.6 and want to update, you will have to do a full update.

Note that the version number of your installation will still say “0.6″, even if you do a full update to version 0.6g.

I am currently finishing the first beta release of Family Tree PHP 1.0. This version will contain the add and edit options so many of you have been looking forward to!

However, when I tried to update my own installation to this new version, I discovered this version will not work on servers with a MySQL version lower than 5.0.12. So I now want to warn anyone in advance: if you want to upgrade to Family Tree PHP 1.0 (the beta version or later the stable version), you need MySQL 5.0.12 or higher. Most of you have this, but if you do not, ask your hosting provider to upgrade or start looking for a better hosting provider now.

If you still have an older version than 0.6 and want to update, you will have to do a full update.

Note that the version number of your installation will still say “0.6″, even if you do a full update to version 0.6f.

If you are content with how everything is working now, you can skip this update. You are not missing out on any functionality, only on some usability.

Sorry, but there was still a bug left to be fixed in version 0.6. If you were running PHP 5.3 or higher, the check for jpg-support failed. This is very annoying of course, because it means you installation will not handle jpg files and will not show any jpg pictures. But because not many users are using PHP 5.3 yet, this bug got unnoticed untill now.

A new corrected version (0.6e) is now available for download.

If you have version 0.6(a/b/c/d), you only have to upload the changed file:

/includes/functions.php

If you still have an older version than 0.6 and want to update, you will have to do a full update.

Note that the version number of your installation will still say “0.6″, even if you do a full update to version 0.6e.

Of you are running a PHP version older than 5.3, you can of course skip this update, although it could be wise to apply it in case your hosting provider updates to 5.3 before the next version of Family Tree PHP is released.
