The grass needs to be mowed, the driveway shouldn't have any holes in it, the walkways need to be walkable, and your trees should be certifiably safe.

No homeowner ever wants to remove their trees, but sometimes it's not up to them. There are times where the power company will have to come in and shave off a few branches if the tree is interfering with the power lines. That's not a big deal.

If the tree is considered "dangerous," though? That's a whole other story.

There are times like this, where a tree cannot remain in place at all. It simply must be removed, before it's too late, as this neighborhood found out after watching the real-life consequences.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45660165/update-kansas-homeowner-begs-neighbor-to-do-the-right-thing-by-cutting-down-her-oak-tree-the-tree" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T14:15:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Remy Millisky</a10:name></a10:author>

15+ Employees Who Spotted Red Flags At the Workplace: 'Instantly makes you want to quit.'

Which specific workplace phrase raises a red flag for you?

While applying for jobs, you'll come across numerous phrases or bits of jargon that should make you think twice about hitting that apply button.

For example: you know those jobs that offer a ridiculously high salary for seemingly very little work? The description will offer applicants like, 5 grand per day. Then, in the fine print, you'll see something that says that there's unlimited earning potential… through commissions.

Don't apply to that job unless you're an extremely charismatic salesperson who can charm anyone they encounter. For most people, it means they're going to be making cold calls all day long, and only getting paid if someone actually makes a purchase.

They could make 5 grand a month, but only if every single caller decided to max out their credit card. Instead, they'll be doing tons of work for peanuts.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45643781/15-employees-who-spotted-red-flags-at-the-workplace-instantly-makes-you-want-to-quit" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T12:15:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Ben Weiss</a10:name></a10:author>

Homeowners accused of eavesdropping after entitled neighbors' intense argument on the back porch: 'We were literally already outside minding our own business'

Nothing can bring a couple together like a common enemy.

These neighbors already gained a reputation on their own for their frequent bickering. No, it has nothing to do with unhealthy levels in the community, as much as these folks would like to think that that's the case. Instead, it has everything to do with their inability to argue in a private place.

Yes, every time these folks had a disagreement, regardless of how major or minor it was, they elected to do so on their back porch, 40 feet away from the other homeowners next door. Most recently, they stopped in the middle of their fight to loudly accuse said homeowners of going out of their way to eavesdrop, when in reality, those homeowners were already outside playing with their kid long before the neighbors started fighting outside.

The homeowners shared their frustrations with members of the r/neighborsfromh*ll subreddit and were given suggestions about how they should get even. The truth of the matter is that it would be impossible for the homeowners not to hear the bickering, slamming doors, and dramatic behavior that these two combustible characters frequently exhibited. No matter how hard they tried to pretend that nothing was happening next door, the neighbors made it impossible to ignore.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45605381/homeowners-accused-of-eavesdropping-after-entitled-neighbors-intense-argument-on-the-back-porch-we" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T11:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Cata Holmes </a10:name></a10:author>

Teacher refuses to change student's B- grade after mom brings in elaborate at-home science project, offers extra credit instead: 'That clearly wasn't the point of the task'

Should a teacher change a student's grade after a parent brings in a better version of the project?

A middle school teacher gave a student a B on a science project that was supposed to be completed mostly during class. A few days later, the student's mom showed up with a much more polished version of the same project, complete with fake moss, plastic animals, and professionally printed labels. She asked if the grade could be reconsidered. The teacher declined, and before long, the disagreement made its way to the school administration.

The moment I read that the mom arrived carrying a giant box with the "real" project in a post shared on r/AmItheAsshole by u/Eugene_Roberts, I had to laugh. There's a certain type of school assignment that somehow starts as something a kid puts together during class and ends up looking like it belongs in a museum exhibit. And honestly, the fake moss is usually the giveaway. No middle school student has ever stared at a shoebox diorama and thought, "You know what this ecosystem needs? Better landscaping."

What makes the whole thing even more amusing is that the assignment was never about building the most impressive-looking model. The teacher's goal was to see what students actually understood about ecosystems and food chains. If presentation becomes the deciding factor, then maybe parents should start receiving grades, too. Imagine report cards with categories like "Hot Glue Expertise," "Decorative Design Skills," and "Ability to Locate Tiny Plastic Animals on Short Notice."

To her credit, the teacher seems to have handled the situation with a lot of patience. Instead of shutting the conversation down, she offered the student a chance to correct mistakes and earn back some points. That feels like a fair compromise. The student gets an opportunity to improve, while the original expectations of the assignment still mean something.

The person I probably feel for the most is the student. Standing there while your parent argues that your project should be replaced with a shinier, more elaborate version has to be uncomfortable. At that point, you're probably not even worried about the grade anymore. You're just hoping nobody makes eye contact and the whole situation ends as quickly as possible.

A B is a perfectly respectable grade. And learning that deadlines matter, and that not every problem can be fixed by an adult stepping in at the last minute: is probably a lesson that will stick much longer than any science project. Even one covered in decorative moss, miniature wildlife, and museum-quality finishing touches.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45636613/teacher-refuses-to-change-students-b-grade-after-mom-brings-in-elaborate-at-home-science-project" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T10:45:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Etai Eshet</a10:name></a10:author>

Landlady enters a tenant’s room with a potential renter, cleans it without permission, moves belongings around, and expects to be thanked for it

A landlady lets herself into a tenant's room without permission, brings a stranger in to look at it, cleans it, moves things around, loses some earrings in the process, finds a new renter, and then texts her tenant expecting a thank you, which is either the most confident property management strategy ever attempted or a very elaborate way to end up in court

The audacity here is complex, multi-layered, pretty impressive if you ask me. It's not just your everyday entering without permission, which is already illegal. It's the bringing of a total stranger into a tenant's private space, moving things around based on her own personal preferences, and then texting about it afterward like she deserved a thank you. The confidence required to do all of that and still expect gratitude is, again, impressive in the worst possible way.

Most landlords at least pretend to follow the rules. They both are not ideal, but the controlling ones are definitely move-out-asap material. The controlling ones will invade your living space as much as they can. Not only that, you're supposed to hand in your resignation letter and notice only after you sign a contract with a new workplace. All of that to ensure you don't find yourself completely unemployed.

Well, anyone who has ever tried to look for a job while still working in the job they intend to leave knows that this is much easier said than done. Job search takes a lot of time, energy, and resources, so much so that most people would say that it is a full-time job on its own.

So how are you supposed to do both at the same time?

That conflict is described perfectly by the employee below, who shared with a Reddit community exactly how difficult they are finding the job search process. They describe the situation as "becoming a professional spy at their own desk," and they admit that it is quite exhausting. Think about it, when you interview for a new job, you can only do so during work hours, since it is the work hours of the recruiter as well. This means that while you work, you must also find time to interview without anyone around you noticing. The employee below resorted to doing it in the bathroom or in their car, all to ensure their current employer will never find out.

And then what? You are expected to come in for an interview in person, which means missing at least a half-day at work. You might be able to get away with it for one interview or two, but who out there is able to secure a job on their first try? Most people go through dozens, if not hundreds, of interviews before getting an offer. Doing so while keeping your current job sounds like an impossible task.

Thankfully, people online have some solid advice to give this hopeless employee, so scroll down to read it all…

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45650949/employee-expresses-guilt-for-looking-for-another-job-while-on-the-clock-gets-told-to-stop-worrying" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T07:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Ben Weiss</a10:name></a10:author>

Employee Resigns After HR Reprimands Him For Excessive PTO Despite Taking the Same Time Off Every Year

Can you imagine being told that the vacation time you took, which you rightfully earned, was suddenly considered excessive?

It's safe to say that this is not how you treat a loyal employee who has been working with you for over half a decade. This man, who shared his story with the r/antiwork subreddit community online, found himself taken aback when, on the first day of the same annual leave he had been taking for five years, he was notified by a coworker from human resources that he needed to come into the office to discuss his "excessive leave."

For context, not only was this the same amount of time off he always took each year, but the argument from HR's perspective also incorporated the bereavement leave he took earlier this year when he was handling a personal family matter involving his grandmother. It was company policy that bereavement leave and paid time off were not one and the same, so we find it interesting that all of a sudden, when it suits upper management, they have deemed that they can, in fact, conflate the two. Not to mention, there seems to have been zero expression of empathy for what their employee has been going through with his family.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45588997/employee-resigns-after-hr-reprimands-him-for-excessive-pto-despite-taking-the-same-time-off-every" /><a10:updated>2026-06-09T05:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Olivia Arocena</a10:name></a10:author>

Guy who started his own business starts behaving like he forgot what it's like to be an employee: 'The things he asks of me after hours and on my personal time... you'd think the guy never worked for anyone in his life'

There are many sides to this story, and I believe both our parties are partially guilty for the overall mess, but it's nonetheless interesting to observe the phenomena. After working hard for 4 years, these kids are ready to celebrate their accomplishments and tell their family members about what they're planning next in their future.

Graduation parties are often huge backyard affairs, filled to the brim with family members, friends, and other wellwishers. These parties are often fairly casual, just a cookout outdoors so everyone can soak in the warm summer weather. Often plus-ones are encouraged: the more wellwishers, the better.

But, as you may know, being a plus-one when you barely know the people at the function can be incredibly awkward. It turns out there are some pretty good reasons for that.

It wasn't always like this. There are plenty of theories about how achieving virality will draw in customers to your restaurant. You might use trendy ingredients, or have a cute-shaped food item that you're known for. You might offer a luxurious experience that the Instagrammers and TikTokers of the world will flock to. As the sister implies in her retelling of the drama, he has plenty of guy friends (including his brother) that he could have invited to join him. His choice to spend that special weekend with only women was certainly eyebrow-raising for the woman he was actually marrying.

Of course, we don't want to be too gendered in our thinking here. I'd like to believe that any person could be platonic friends with any other person. However, given historical patterns of socialization that are outside all of our control, one can empathize with the bride's conflicted feelings on the matter.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45588485/woman-questions-fiancs-bachelor-party-after-learning-he-only-invited-his-closest-female-friends" /><a10:updated>2026-06-08T11:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Celeste Mello</a10:name></a10:author>

Vet office employee gets tired of hunting down coworker for handovers and starts leaving right on time, coworker runs to the boss to complain: ‘[It's not my business where you are in the building when your shift starts]’

Have you ever had a coworker who played with your time? That one who never shows up on time at scheduled meetings, that one who disappears when it's time to do a shared task, or that one who doesn't respect your working hours. In today's story, an employee gets tired of waiting for her coworker before she can leave the office exactly at the end of her shift. Not any longer. If your shift ends at 5:30, then 5:30 means 5:30, not when the next employee arrives and decides they feel ready to start doing their job.

Scheduled times at the workplace matter. They exist for a reason, and they should be respected so that no one's workday is any longer than it has to be. Problems arise when responsible employees end up compensating for the habits of the less responsible ones. Because they end up doing more than what they should, but they care about it, so they won't leave everything unattended. They know someone has to actually do the job, so irresponsible employees often take advantage of the situation when they see that someone else is covering up for them. But that's really unfair.

A vet office employee posted her workplace story on the Reddit coworker stories subreddit, commenting that every handover was a problem. Her coworker was never where she needed to be; she was elsewhere in the building, chatting with other colleagues while she kept waiting for her. Understandably, she didn't want customers to be affected, and she didn't want work to pile up and consequently leave her coworker in a difficult situation. She was being considerate. But over time, she got tired of the same situation happening every single day, so at that point, she realized it was a lack of respect for her time. She shouldn't be responsible for her coworker's irresponsibility.

The solution was pretty simple: she stopped making her coworker's problem her own. She stopped sacrificing her time to compensate for her coworker's bad habits and let her deal with the consequences herself. And just like that, her coworker started respecting the schedule. The problem was never a lack of time, but a lack of consequences.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45619717/vet-office-employee-gets-tired-of-hunting-down-coworker-for-handovers-and-starts-leaving-right-on" /><a10:updated>2026-06-08T10:45:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Etai Eshet</a10:name></a10:author>

Company hires $15K “culture consultant” who recommends everything employees already said, then presents it back to them as a leadership breakthrough: 'I'm not even angry anymore I'm just tired'

Companies love solving problems the expensive way, especially when the cheap way involves actually listening to the people already in the room

This is a story about a workplace that had all the answers sitting right in front of them, handed over repeatedly and for free, and still needed to pay a stranger fifteen thousand dollars to say the exact same things in a nicer font before anyone took it seriously. That is not a communication problem. That is a credibility problem, and the credibility apparently costs fifteen grand to rent.

It's the classic hire person to do job then schedule meeting to talk about doing job then schedule another meeting to go over meeting about doing job then ask for agenda before meeting about meeting about doing job instead of letting do job then compline about no job being done so you end up paying 15 thousand dollars to a culture consultant, which is an obvious linkedin lingo made up title that trick company into paying you said 15 thousand dollars by the way. While many employees make an okay-ish salary, maybe $50k or $75k, that's not what their bosses are making. Many CEOs and other higher-ups are raking in like, $250k per year or more! They're able to afford things like going on actual vacations, instead of staycations. They can afford luxurious meals, nice new cars, private schools for their kids. Meanwhile, their employees are hanging in there, but they can't exactly save for retirement or send their kids to summer camp.

Even if higher-ups know about the monetary divide, they don't have to think about it too much. In between their 6 vacations a year, they'll pop into the office to cheer up the employees with a pizza lunch before dipping out again. They wouldn't know how to work a 40 hour week even if they tried.

This boss can see right through their employer's nonsense. Here is a general guide in case you want to learn from others' mistakes:

Step one: Put yourself on the job market and interview for other companies. Don't say anything about it in your current workplace. Step two: After a (probably) long process of applying and interviewing, get to the final stage at a workplace of your choice. Still don't tell anyone at your current job about your intention to leave. Step three: Secure an offer and start negotiating your salary and conditions.

Now, here is where many people make their first mistake. They think that since they got an offer from another workplace, it might be time to tell their current employer that they intend to leave. However, without an actual signed contract with the new workplace, an offer is pretty much worthless, and definitely is not worth the risk of quitting your job for yet. It is only after step four that an employee should even consider handing in their notice:

Step four: Sign the contract with your soon-to-be new workplace and make sure it clearly states a start date that aligns with your timeframe. Then, and only then, should you schedule a meeting with your current employer and hand in your written resignation, along with your notice.

Got it? Good. If you need another proof why you shouldn't mess with this guide on how and when to quit your job, scroll down to read this story, shared on r/jobs Subreddit, about an employee who told their manager they are leaving after only getting a verbal offer from another company. It was only a matter of days before they realized their mistake, but by that point, it was way too late to turn back…

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45634053/employee-quits-job-after-getting-verbal-offer-from-another-company-only-to-then-be-told-the-position" /><a10:updated>2026-06-08T07:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Olivia Arocena</a10:name></a10:author>

Boss demands employee 'evaluate' whether leading people is for him after getting too emotional in a meeting, employee is left wondering if he still has time to flip the script: 'Everything doesn’t scream trust. Trusting that your landlord has the best of intentions at heart would be a fool's errand. With that in mind, there are always several areas worth considering.

The first would be to look for any hidden fees. Living in New York, I've seen instances where landlords and management companies have snuck in inflated broker's fees, move-in fees, and excessive security deposits just because they think they can get away with it. Sometimes, they don't even tell you. They just expect that tenants won't read the fine print.

Next, make sure you're fully aware of all aspects of the living situation. That is perhaps where this Redditor's sister went wrong. She shared her story on the r/legaladvice subreddit community, hoping to find out about whether or not her sibling had any legal standing against her new Massachusetts-based landlord.

In her case, what the landlord neglected to mention was that the sister would be renting a room in an apartment where the landlord's own daughter would be staying in the living room (presumably free of charge). Not only is that not the agreement they made when the sister first signed the lease, but it also means she and her other roommates are essentially paying for more than they should be. We haven't even addressed the ridiculous price for a single room yet, but rest assured, we'll get there! Anyone who lives in an apartment knows what I'm talking about. Sometimes the noises are so absurd that they make you wonder: are they throwing coins at the floor? Rearranging their furniture every time they are bored? Practicing tap dancing?

Just like anyone who has ever lived in an apartment, this tenant asked herself, 'What are they doing up there, bowling?' Well, the answer sometimes can be yes. Her neighbors were literally bowling.

These neighbors were not dropping objects or moving furniture, nor were they dancing. The kids were having so much fun bowling that the tenant couldn't even find the courage to complain.

After peeking through her upstairs neighbor's door peephole, she found out that they had a real bowling set with a ball and pins. She posted this frustrating situation on the Reddit AITA subreddit, commenting that it was so annoying yet so ridiculous that she couldn't even tell them to 'stop bowling'. What kind of lease agreement or noise ordinance mentions bowling in an apartment? Who bowls inside an apartment, anyway? Were these neighbors secretly training for the Olympics?

It's funny that I can relate to this. A few months ago, I went through something similar with my upstairs neighbors, who, by the way, have now moved. For weeks, I kept hearing this strange metallic banging sound coming from above. It sounded like someone was dropping metal pipes on the floor just for fun in the middle of the afternoon. Then one day, I ran into a little girl in the hallway carrying a hollow metal tube, and it all made sense. It was a pretty unusual toy for a kid, actually, but at least the mystery was finally solved.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45620229/tenant-finally-confronts-noisy-upstairs-neighbors-joking-that-they-sound-like-theyre-bowling-only-to" /><a10:updated>2026-06-08T04:15:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Inés Soubrie</a10:name></a10:author>

Girlfriend's best friend breaks up with his girlfriend and immediately starts spending every day at the couple's apartment for three weeks, boyfriend gives ultimatum and gets called toxic: 'I pay half the rent to live with her, not another roommate'

Three weeks of daily 2pm-to-11pm visits and somehow the person who finally said something is the one getting roasted in the group chat.

Setting a limit on how much of your shared home gets handed over to someone else's heartbreak isn't cold, it's what maintaining a relationship actually looks like. They've seen candidates show up late to interviews. They've seen résumés that stretch the definition of "proficient" beyond recognition. They've probably even seen people negotiate salaries with the confidence of someone buying a used car. What they probably don't expect is a call from a candidate's mother.

Yet that's exactly what happened in this hiring saga, and honestly, it's one of those stories that gets more unbelievable every time you read it. According to the recruiter, everything started normally enough. The company extended an offer for a junior developer position. Not a lowball offer, either. It was reportedly near the top of the salary range they had already discussed with the candidate. Everybody involved probably assumed the next conversation would be between the company and the person applying for the job. Instead, about an hour later, the recruiter's phone rang. Whether you're interviewing to be an office worker or you're stepping into a retail role, you need to dress nicely for that interview.

Sure, it's a bit old fashioned. But in theory, it allows the interviewer to focus on the candidate, instead of being distracted by a person's clothing choices.

You could argue that it actually protects candidates in some ways, because it prevents a potential employer from judging them based off the clothes they wear. Infrastructure does not get sick days. Infrastructure just quietly keeps running until it completely falls apart, at which point everyone acts shocked and holds a meeting about it.

Getting fired is bad. Time was tight, and the software engineer managed to find a quick way to outsource this work. For a simple $50/month subscription to another service, they could get the project completed for the client.

For whatever reason, this pitch was a bridge too far for upper management. The engineer's supervisor rejected the pitch and insisted that he take the time to develop new software for the project in-house. The engineer tried to explain to his manager that this would take a lot of time and resources, but the manager refused to take his protestations seriously. Talk about famous last words.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45587461/manager-refuses-to-spend-50-on-external-software-insisting-engineer-waste-company-resources" /><a10:updated>2026-06-07T05:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Cata Holmes </a10:name></a10:author>

Elderly homeowner begs couple to move in because she's afraid to live alone, kicks them out 2 weeks later over a work-for-rent misunderstanding: 'We were completely confused'

If someone invites you to live rent-free, should you expect a catch?

Most people don't get offered a rent-free place to live these days. In fact, if someone approached us and said, "Hey, would you like a fully equipped basement apartment in exchange for occasionally helping around the house?" we'd probably assume we'd won some sort of housing lottery. Rent prices are outrageous, everyone is trying to save money, and finding a decent place to live feels harder than ever. So naturally, an offer like that sounds pretty appealing.

Of course, whenever a deal sounds almost too good to be true, there's usually a reason. Maybe it's a strict set of rules. Maybe it's an overly involved landlord. Maybe it's a misunderstanding about expectations. Whatever it is, there's almost always some detail lurking beneath the surface that nobody bothered to fully discuss before moving day.

That's why situations involving informal living arrangements can get messy so quickly. One person thinks they're doing someone a favor. The other thinks they've entered a mutually beneficial agreement. Neither side puts anything in writing because everyone seems friendly and trustworthy. Then, the moment something goes wrong, people suddenly realize they've been operating under completely different assumptions the entire time.

And honestly, that's what makes stories like this one so frustrating to read. Nobody seems to have started with bad intentions. The homeowner wanted company after her son moved out. The couple believed they were helping someone who felt unsafe living alone. Yet somehow, within a matter of weeks, the arrangement completely unraveled because expectations were communicated through scattered conversations, text messages, and assumptions instead of one clear discussion.

When the story was shared by u/beeeeok12 in r/LandlordLove, readers quickly started asking the same question: how do you move people into your home without clearly explaining what they're expected to do in exchange? If six hours of work per week was a requirement, shouldn't that have been established before anyone packed boxes, gave up their previous apartment, and rearranged their lives?

At the same time, stories like this are a reminder that "free rent" is rarely ever free. Sometimes the payment comes in chores, maintenance, caretaking, or simply being available whenever the homeowner needs something. None of those things are necessarily unreasonable, but they only work when everyone understands the deal from the very beginning. Otherwise, what starts as a generous offer can quickly turn into an awkward and expensive lesson for everyone involved.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45579525/elderly-homeowner-begs-couple-to-move-in-because-shes-afraid-to-live-alone-kicks-them-out-2-weeks" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T15:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Celeste Mello</a10:name></a10:author>

Coworker insists every discussion happen on a call, then ghosts meetings and delays project for weeks, forcing manager to step in: ‘She’s withholding the information I need to do my work’

One of the perks of remote work is flexibility. It's really practical that most communication can be handled through messages, shared documents, and quick meetings when it's necessary. But that flexibility only works when everyone communicates and respects what's scheduled. What would you do if a coworker kept ghosting meetings to the point that it started affecting your workflow and your ability to meet deadlines?

In the normal corporate world, when someone requests a meeting with you, you naturally expect them to show up. Well, that's not what happened here. This coworker insisted that all communication had to be handled by calls, but for some reason, she never showed up to the calls she requested. So it became impossible to move the project forward when the person holding the information was never available. What's worse, deadlines don't wait, and they kept getting closer and closer.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45593093/coworker-insists-every-discussion-happen-on-a-call-then-ghosts-meetings-and-delays-project-for-weeks" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T13:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Cata Holmes </a10:name></a10:author>

Employee refuses to cover for coworker Dina's absences after she blamed her for a shared project mistake, leaving her with a formal note in her file

How many workplace favors are you expected to do before enough is enough?

Most people understand that workplace relationships run on a mixture of cooperation, trust, and the occasional favor. Maybe you cover a shift for someone in a pinch. Maybe you can help explain a mistake before it becomes a bigger issue. Maybe you quietly look the other way when a coworker is running a few minutes late. These small acts of goodwill happen every day, and most of the time they're part of what makes a workplace function smoothly.

Of course, there's an unspoken expectation attached to those favors. Nobody keeps score, but people generally assume the support goes both ways. If someone helps you out repeatedly, you would hope they'd receive the same consideration when they need it. That's what separates a healthy working relationship from one that feels entirely one-sided.

The problem arises when one person starts treating that goodwill as something they're entitled to rather than something they've earned. Suddenly, favors stop feeling voluntary and start feeling expected. The coworker who once appreciated your help begins assuming you'll always be there to smooth things over, cover for them, or absorb the consequences when things go wrong.

That's why stories like the one shared by AlertShape5681 on r/AITH resonate with so many readers. The conflict isn't really about one meeting, one project, or even one comment made to a manager. It's about what happens when trust gets broken. Once someone demonstrates that they're willing to protect themselves at your expense, it's hard to continue acting as though nothing happened.

What's particularly frustrating is that people often label the resulting boundary as "petty" rather than acknowledging the behavior that created it. Refusing to continue doing favors for someone isn't necessarily revenge. Sometimes it's simply a reassessment of the relationship. If one person has shown they're unwilling to extend the same loyalty they've been receiving, the dynamic changes, whether anyone likes it or not.

At the end of the day, workplace goodwill is a lot like credit. It takes time to build, but it can disappear surprisingly quickly. Once a coworker has convinced you that they'll throw you under the bus when the pressure is on, it's difficult to blame anyone for deciding that future favors are no longer part of the arrangement.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45601029/employee-refuses-to-cover-for-coworker-dinas-absences-after-she-blamed-her-for-a-shared-project" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T11:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Cata Holmes </a10:name></a10:author>

Tenant notices her water bill climbing month after month, discovers a neighbor has been running a laundry business from her apartment: 'The whole building was paying'

How long would it take you to notice you're paying someone else's utility bill?

For years, one apartment resident assumed her rising water bill was simply the result of increasing utility costs. What started as a normal monthly expense eventually tripled, leaving tenants throughout the building confused and frustrated. The mystery wasn't solved until a neighbor mentioned the constant flow of people carrying laundry baskets to and from a single apartment, revealing that one resident had allegedly been running a laundry service while everyone else helped cover the water costs.

I'll admit that if my utility bill slowly increased over the course of a year, I probably would have blamed just about everything before suspecting a secret laundry business. Rising prices? Sure. A billing mistake? Maybe. Some mysterious apartment-complex math that nobody can explain? Absolutely. The idea that one tenant might be washing half the town's clothes while everyone else unknowingly helped pay the water bill would have been pretty far down my list.

What really catches my attention is that the warning signs were there all along. People reportedly came and went throughout the day carrying overflowing baskets, and the washer and dryer seemed to be running constantly. Looking at it now, it sounds obvious. But when you're living your daily life, those kinds of details are easy to ignore, especially when nobody has a reason to suspect anything unusual.

When u/Cold_Swordfish7763 shared the story in r/EntitledPeople after first posting it elsewhere, plenty of readers wondered how the situation managed to continue for so long. Personally, I think the answer is pretty simple. Most people trust that their neighbors are following the rules. We don't usually jump straight to the conclusion that someone is operating a side business from their apartment.

That said, I can completely understand why residents were upset once they learned what had been happening. This wasn't just about noise or extra foot traffic. Because the utility costs were shared, every additional load of laundry had a direct impact on everyone else's bill. That's where the situation starts feeling less like an entrepreneurial idea and more like an unfair burden placed on the rest of the building.

The part that would bother me the most, though, is realizing I'd spent months paying extra without knowing the reason. Rising bills are frustrating enough on their own. Finding out that some of those costs may have come from someone else's business activities would make the whole situation a lot harder to shrug off.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45615621/tenant-notices-her-water-bill-climbing-month-after-month-discovers-a-neighbor-has-been-running-a" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T10:45:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Olivia Arocena</a10:name></a10:author>

31-year-old man states that his coworkers' flirting is part of their culture, insists on ‘separating family from business’, leaving his girlfriend questioning whether he simply enjoys the attention: 'Am I overreacting?'

What happens when our partners deny something we see happening?

We like to think our relationship troubles are always going to be resolved through confrontation and long, overnight discussions that end with a balanced perspective for both parties, but sometimes we confront our significant others with things they are not ready, or not willing to accept, or even to discuss, and we're left feeling like we are crazy or imagining things.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45570821/31-year-old-man-states-that-his-coworkers-flirting-is-part-of-their-culture-insists-on-separating" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T10:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Cata Holmes </a10:name></a10:author>

'I'm your mom!': Mother ignores daughter's warnings and takes a job 2 hours away, then expects to move into her house when the commute becomes unbearable

Who wouldn't want their own mom as a tenant, coming and going at all hours of the night?

A woman recently found herself dealing with a situation she had hoped to avoid. Her mother accepted a part-time job located about two hours from home, despite being warned several times about how difficult the commute would be. Now that she's experiencing the reality of spending so much time on the road, she's asked to stay at her daughter's house during workdays. The arrangement would also include bringing her dog along, and there doesn't seem to be a clear timeline for how long this would continue.

It's not hard to see why both sides feel the way they do. The mother's situation is understandable. Driving long distances several days in a row can be draining, and what may have seemed manageable at first often feels very different once it becomes part of a weekly routine. Reaching out to family for help is a natural response when circumstances turn out to be more challenging than expected.

At the same time, the daughter has valid concerns of her own. She already has a full household to manage, including a husband who starts his days early, a child, and a cat that struggles with disruptions to its environment. What begins as a temporary favor can easily evolve into something more permanent, especially when no one has discussed an end date. That's a significant commitment for anyone to take on.

Situations like this often spark strong opinions because family dynamics can make simple decisions feel much more complicated. Many people find it easier to decline a request from a friend than from a parent, even when the request creates the same inconvenience. Family relationships tend to come with expectations that aren't always spoken aloud, which can make setting boundaries feel uncomfortable.

When Reddit user u/Alarming_Poem_7343 shared the story on r/AITAH, reactions reflected that tension. Some readers focused on the mother's difficult circumstances and felt she deserved support, while others believed the daughter was justified in protecting the stability of her home and family life.

In the end, the best path forward is usually an honest conversation. It may not be an easy one, and there's always a chance that feelings could be hurt. Still, when people are trying to balance compassion with their own personal limits, clear communication is often the only way to find a solution that works for everyone involved.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45614853/im-your-mom-mother-ignores-daughters-warnings-and-takes-a-job-2-hours-away-then-expects-to-move-into" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T09:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Remy Millisky</a10:name></a10:author>

'[I was] awarded a 12 cent raise': 15+ Employees who quit their jobs for good reasons

What are the reasons that would push an employee to quit their job?

Just let these people explain what happened at their workplaces, and you'll get it.

If you've never experienced working at a job you really dislike, these employees can tell you all about it. They have no problem overworking their devoted employees while giving them empty promises of raises they will never see or recognition they will never get.

It should also come as no surprise when these employees eventually leave. Why would they stay at a workplace that takes and takes without giving anything in return? As long as they can find a different workplace that would at least show better appreciation, you can bet they will be out the door as soon as they get another offer.

To say that the employee below was out the door as soon as she could be would be an understatement, since she made sure that her resignation would be something everyone remembers. The fact that one of her coworkers decided to share the story on Reddit's r/ToxicWorkplace community proves that she left an unforgettable mark.

For months, this employee gave her heart and soul to her company, without getting anything in return. Even the raises and promotions she would get were disrespectful and incredibly below the average on the market, yet they kept telling her there was nothing else they could do. For a while, she accepted that and kept on working, until one discovery made her realize just how underappreciated she really is.

When the company told her they were going to hire an assistant for her, she was pretty excited. She has been working so hard and could really use the help. Then, she saw the assistant's job posting, and discovered that the company plans to offer the assistant $5k - $30k more than she makes herself.

That was the final straw for the employee. She now knew that no matter how hard she worked, she would never get what she truly deserved in the company. But that doesn't mean that she was going to leave without making sure the entire company knew what they were losing…

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45594373/overworked-employee-resigns-live-on-camera-during-company-meeting-after-discovering-her-new" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T07:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Olivia Arocena</a10:name></a10:author>

Manager obsessed with "professional appearance" says cashiers look "lazy" if they’re sitting down and bans chairs completely during shifts. ‘Within like 2 weeks, the front end became a disaster.’

Are healthy knees even necessary?

All around the world, employees struggle with this type of manager, the one obsessed with everyone looking servile and energetic, who will stop at nothing to achieve the desired look. Would you have quit while on vacation if you were in his position?

A summer vacation can do wonders when it comes to recharging and recalibrating. However, this employee might have taken things a little too far. Or, depending on who you're talking to, he might have stepped into his power. It's all dependent on perspective.

He shared his side of the story in Reddit's r/jobs subreddit and explained how he received another job offer while he was on vacation. The new opportunity was scheduled to start in three weeks, so the employee thought he would need to put in his two weeks' notice immediately so that he could have a break before the next job began.

Unfortunately, that meant notifying his managers, leadership, and his entire team while he was away from the office…

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45569029/employee-sparks-backlash-after-giving-two-weeks-notice-while-on-pto" /><a10:updated>2026-06-06T05:00:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Elna McHilderson</a10:name></a10:author>

'It all started when...': Pour a dash of these laughs into your morning coffee for some extra energy (June 6, 2026)

Are you a lil eepy hard-working employee?

Me too, besties, me too. It's non-stop, I tell you! I'm exhausted. Making people laugh through their phones and computers is hard work. You wouldn't think it would be, since you're constantly sending memes to your friends. But it's actually a totally different monster. Kind of like how they say don't monetize what you love. And by they I mean me, because any time I've started to try to monetize what I love, I start to resent it. Because now it's a dang job, and I was meant to frolic through the fields! Bosses and managers everywhere heard that they could replace their workforce with the likes of an AI datacenter-driven assistant, and they never stopped to question the costs of that transition. AI isn't good enough to replace a real, living person in the workplace. It may be capable of replacing some of their tasks or shortcutting some of the workload, but no AI system can replace an actual human.

Surely, no boss would ever consider firing an entire department to replace them with faulty AI bots… Right?

Apparently, a thoughtless boss would do just that. However, this woman's behavior not only reflects the poor decision-making skills many of us could identify with in those early years of adulthood, but it also reflects on her poor character overall.

Her roommate specifically told her that getting a German Shepherd was a bad idea, especially given how many hours they work during the day. However, the woman refused to listen, and the roommate came home to find, you guessed it, an innocent-looking German Shepherd husky mix running around in her apartment. She shared her frustrations online in Reddit's r/mildlyinfuriating community, where she was met with sympathy, solidarity, and even some suggestions as to how to get back at her friend.

The fact that the friend assumed it would be totally fine to shirk her responsibilities as a pet parent and leave them all to her roommate and significant other only goes to show that this is someone who hasn't yet been told no enough in her life. Clearly, she also has not grasped the concept of what it is to share space with someone. Decisions like these require all parties to agree prior to making any moves.

If the roommate cannot respect that, then she does not deserve to have her wishes as a member of the household respected either. The only way for the woman who shared this story to get even would be to make her friend acutely aware that her actions have consequences. It might be difficult at first, but that means letting go of cleaning up after her messes. It means saying no to any dog-related duties in the apartment. A young adult tries to keep things afloat after graduation, takes on bills that are not theirs, helps cover rent, buys groceries, and even gets pulled into loans like this is some kind of bad financial relay race. At a certain point, helping out stops being temporary and starts becoming the family business model. No assigned seatings, no desk is reserved. You come to work in the morning, you choose one of the remaining free desks, and you get settled for the day. Then you do it all over again tomorrow.

While the office might save a few bucks from this system, we have never heard of an employee who actually enjoys sharing a desk with their coworkers. It is almost always a cause for some friction between the employees, and you can be sure that there will be at least one employee who thinks they are better than everyone else and tries to prove it by claiming ownership of one of the open desks. Usually, the one everybody wants the most.

That is exactly the case in the office from a story posted on Reddit's r/pettyrevenge Subreddit. While everyone in the office was trying to make the hot desk system work, one employee tried to rig the system by taking over a desk and leaving it in a state that ensured no one else would use it. He would constantly leave his coffee cups and other garbage on the desk just to make it look like the desk was constantly in use, even on days when he wasn't even in the office.

This led one of his coworkers to take action and put an end to the childish behavior. Every time this employee was not in the office, the coworker would either mess with the desk's cables, readjust the monitors, or even add more trash to the desk to make it look significantly less appealing. Eventually, this caught the manager's attention, who was appalled that someone had left a desk in that state, and proceeded to remind everyone of desk etiquette and cleanliness principles…

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45584133/employee-takes-over-desk-at-work-by-leaving-his-trash-all-the-time-coworker-adds-even-more-trash-to" /><a10:updated>2026-06-05T07:30:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Elna McHilderson</a10:name></a10:author>

Company lowballs promoted employee's new raise by $5,000 below market value, quits live on camera during all-company meeting: ‘She was good. Give me the works, bestie! I need the excitement. You're leaving us all here in this desolate workplace, the least you could do is leave us with something to gossip about for the next few months. That being said, it takes a lot of courage and idgaf attitude to quit with pizazz like that. Would I quit like that? Probably not. I said I like to hear about the drama, perhaps even witness it. I don't like to be a part of the drama. That being said, oh baby, did we enjoy reading this quitting story on r/talesfromthejob by Redditor u/cmhopkings7443.

Her co-worker was wildly under-appreciated. She describes her as the kind of employee who did everything before it even needed to be asked and fixed mistakes before people even caught them. So, of course, when the company got ambitious, they promoted her. Unfortunately, they wanted to pay her under market value, like, way under market value. And what do we always say? Act your wage, queen. When they refused to give her the proper salary, she quit most epically. Honestly, we applaud her and wish we could have witnessed such bravery.

<a10:link href="https://cheezburger.com/45607941/company-lowballs-promoted-employees-new-raise-by-5000-below-market-value-quits-live-on-camera-during" /><a10:updated>2026-06-05T06:45:00-07:00</a10:updated>

<a10:author><a10:name>Ben Weiss</a10:name></a10:author>

Virginia employee refuses to use software that records customers without approval, seeks legal action after employer threatens termination

This Virginia-based customer service representative was recently promoted to a supervisor role when she was reprimanded for refusing to follow a controversial mandate.

The employee turned to Reddit's r/legaladvice subreddit community for guidance, as she expects that she will soon be fired for defying orders she felt were unethical.
