Actions speak louder than words

The woman from this story has discovered that her boyfriend was actually capable of noticing that someone deserved a special gesture, imagining what would make them feel cared for, spending time and money to do it, and following through. Sadly, that someone wasn't her.

Sometimes we lie to ourselves and think our significant others don't do certain things because they don't know how, and in situations like these, we realize they always knew how; they just didn't want to do them for us.

I'm a big believer in actions speaking louder than words; you just have to learn to interpret them and act on them as soon as possible. This woman's boyfriend is explicitly showing who he wants to care for, and it's not her. I think that gesture is enough to confirm that.

Notice how he didn't say 'I thought it would be nice', he said 'She deserves it', subtly implying his girlfriend doesn't. Meanwhile, she was going through some really big changes, but apparently, that doesn't make her deserving of flowers. Knowing her boyfriend for about ten minutes did, though.

Hey, we can't conclude he doesn't love his girlfriend only from this, but I would definitely keep an eye on him. To be fair, he might be more inclined to be thoughtful at his job because that's where his passion is, and he has a leading role.

We should always be mindful of what our parents spontaneously do for us, and if that never includes a thoughtful gesture, when they are perfectly capable of doing those for other people, then that's a red flag to look out for, in my opinion.

This worker just complied with the orders he received. Is that wrong?

Malicious compliance is a term that refers to when you receive an order that you know is not well thought out, so you comply with it, knowing that it will fail spectacularly, just to prove that you were right by doubting the order all along. This is my explanation of the term, but it is pretty accurate. An example of this would be when your boss tells you not to work extra hours; you comply, and then a crisis happens, and they want you to stay overtime to fix it, but you say you can´t because they previously told you not to do extra hours. Now, this is obviously not a good thing to do, but it does feel good to see the look on their faces when you comply with an order, and it doesn't work in the boss's favor.

Another good example of this kind of behavior is this story. A maintenance guy whose sole purpose in his job is to fix any problem that the office building may have gets an order not to accept any verbal request than employees may give for damages. There was no clarification about exceptions for emergencies or anything. That's why this employee just did exactly what he was told. When the valve broke and water started flooding the whole building, he didn't accept the verbal notification to fix the issue. He waited until a ticket was sent through the portal to close the valve. That made the entire building's floors and walls get more damage than they should have, which, of course, wasn't a nice thing for the manager that order the no-more-verbal-request rule.

This manager thought she was changing something for the better; this maintenance worker knew she hadn't, but still complied because it is his job. Then, when everything went down, she had no one to blame but herself. The worker did what he was told, even when it was the worst idea. What would you have done in this situation? Do you think that what the worker did was acceptable?

They say you can't choose your family, which is true, and sadly, you can't choose your neighbors either. You might encounter great people, the kind who bring you housewarming gifts and introduce themselves, and to whom you can ask for a cup of sugar when you run out of it. Or, you might happen to get acquainted with people who are terribly inconsiderate, loud, and with whom it's impossible to establish any kind of friendship. I've had both kinds. I have a neighbor with whom we even exchange food. And another set of people who have loud parties on weekdays until 3am. My bedroom window is right beside their backyard, so many times I couldn't even go to sleep in the first place.

What happened to me is actually a pretty common occurrence, and it's what happened to these people. Their neighbors were constantly loud, and calling the authorities was the same as doing nothing, since they wouldn't show up. They took matters into their own hands then. They got a big speaker, downloaded an annoying song, connected both things for it to play on loop, and went away for the weekend. No one said a single thing when they returned, and they never heard a loud party again. A few months after, the neighbors even moved away. Seems like they finally realized how annoying loud noises and music can be when you're trying to live your life quietly.

Why would she leave it in a rental freezer?

My experiences with Airbnbs have not always been great, especially when my family used them for European vacations in 2013. Don't get me wrong, the apartments we got were great for what we needed them for. The main problem was that we spent hours waiting outside for the Airbnb owner to show up with the key. I guess this was before lockboxes, or at least before Airbnb hosts trusted tenants with lockboxes, so we had to stand outside a London apartment for at least an hour in the cold after being on a plane for the past six hours. We were beyond exhausted. I don't know what star rating my parents gave the rental, but I really hope it wasn't 5 stars. After a couple of tries, we stopped using Airbnbs altogether and went back to hotels. Unless you're in a large group, hotels are much easier.

We're not the only ones who have had bad experiences with Airbnbs. I've seen a lot of viral posts lately of people complaining about their Airbnbs only leaving one roll of toilet paper for tenants, which I find absurd. If you're going to supply linens, soap, towels, and other household items, why can't you supply toilet paper? If you're running a regular long-term apartment rental, it makes sense not to supply toilet paper. But a vacation rental? Who wants to take time out of their vacation to drive to Walmart and buy toilet paper? Not me!

The other thing that's so infuriating about Airbnbs is the cleaning lists. I understand stripping the linens off the beds and not leaving the place a total pigsty. But why should tenants have to clean the apartment when a cleaning fee is already included on their bill? I'm okay with tipping the housekeeper, but that's only if I am not also forced to be the housekeeper, lest I get fined even more. Like most landlords, many Airbnb owners don't want to do any work on their property. They don't want to make sure it's presentable and suitable for the next tenant. So what do they do? They blame everything wrong with their property on the previous tenant and refuse to fix the problems themselves.

The Airbnb owner in this story is not the brightest crayon in the box. She has doubled down on the idea that she's right and her tenants are wrong, despite everyone and their mother telling her otherwise.

If you don't see a problem with living at your parents' house at age 31, you might want to look again

Everyone can go through a rough patch and have to move back to their parents'. But some plan on staying there forever. The question is not necessarily 'Should he move out?', but more 'What is he really doing with the freedom living at his parents' is giving him?'

If you're using the money to invest aggressively, start a business, pursue a creative project, that's one thing; if you're only using it to spend on whatever you please because you will face no consequences, that's a whole different story.

I don't think the problem is about money at all; I think it is about independence and the steps required to become an adult. The man in this story insists he lives in a separate private zone within the same property, but that doesn't make a real difference, only a psychological one.

You can move 2,000 miles away from your parents and remain psychologically entangled with them, and you can also live in the same house and achieve total adult independence, but I don't think that's our friend's case. Why would he need reassurance from the internet if this wasn't the case?

I think he is only looking for a justification for staying, and that's part of not wanting to grow up. His parents are obviously enabling the situation, and it will definitely go on until somebody stops it.

Becoming an adult is largely about learning to take care of yourself and face the consequences of your actions, including your finances. If you have parents who support you through thick and thin, I suppose it might be tempting to relax and stay with them for a bit, but for eternity? That'd be a little weird, right?

Is a neighbor entitled to somebody's private space just because they don't use it?

People who can't help but make their mark on the private property of their neighbors are a surprisingly common occurrence. It is like they think that they are entitled to use the space purely because of its proximity to them, never mind what the law says about who lives there and/or owns it. They have a need for another piece of yard or a parking space, and so they trample all over their neighbor's boundaries.

While part of living close to other people is accepting that we cannot have full control over how they live their lives, it is not unreasonable to expect them to respect what isn't theirs. It's normal to do something nice for a neighbor, like invite them to a backyard BBQ or let their family park in your space one time. However, when these kinds of favors turn into unspoken expectations, it sets the stage for conflict that can turn a pleasant place to live into a sincerely aggravating one. Bad neighbors are a different kind of frustrating, because it is that much harder to get away from their nonsense.

This is definitely a golden rule

I think we've all liked a friend at some point in our lives, and we can all agree it always gets very confusing. When we like someone a lot, we naturally don't want to lose them, so we will likely say yes to keeping them as a friend even though we want more.

We might deny it, but in the back of our minds, we will probably be waiting for them to change their opinion about us. It's not rational, and it's not on purpose, of course, but it's something denial does for most of us.

A person should be really secure for this not to happen. They should be able to know themselves when they're getting too involved with somebody who only sees them as a friend. But well, that doesn't happen every time, and it's normal for the person who has a crush on somebody to be vulnerable.

The woman in the post below writes really interesting reasons why you shouldn't keep a person who likes you as a friend, and I think her arguments are strong.

If we really appreciate our friend and don't want to lose them, we should put some distance between us, at least for a couple of months. Just so the body understands there is no hidden opportunity and correctly grieves the loss. I've done this with two friends, and they have completely gotten over it. It's only natural.

Besides, we're talking about a 40-year-old maple tree that wasn't located on the neighbor's property whatsoever. It was 9 feet inside the homeowner's land, with a clear survey that confirms this information. The worst part of all is that the family went on a little holiday, and when they returned home, they found the tree completely gone. Not even trimmed: gone.

The neighbors weren't too worried about it. They said that the tree service company must have confused the trees that needed to be cut down. Of course, this is not true a lot. The homeowners have evidence that shows how the neighbors wanted that tree gone for a while and never found a way to remove it until they left for that little trip.

This story brings back memories of something similar that happened to my family years back. We have a beautiful tree outside our home, and it causes some problems with the flowers and leaves. They used to get on the neighbors' gutters, and my dad had to trim it every fall. One time, we left for a barbecue and came home late at night. We found that every branch of the tree was gone, not a single one. With our security camera footage, we realized it was our neighbor, who has zero knowledge of tree trimming.

The tree ended up being fine, and luckily not gone like the one in the story shared by the user, but it's still a painful situation to face. Of course, both are ready to seek justice and make them pay for their trespassing and the missing tree.

How early is too late to be at a job interview?

If there is one thing that employers universally value across all sectors and all levels, it is an employee who is punctual. Most managers want to work with people who arrive on time, manage their workload effectively, and clock out before they start costing the company extra money. A perpetually late starter is somebody who is likely to be slacking on other metrics, too, and therefore will not be a good person to hire.

While most of us would agree that it is reasonable enough to expect an employee to have decent time management, there are undeniably examples of when this gets taken too far. At the end of the day, it is one quality of many that makes up an individual who is capable of doing their job successfully. There is a difference between expecting certain standards and using the clock as a form of control. We lost track of things between "I can totally cook this" and dinner…

Cooking can be an experience… it can go very well, and we can be surprised that we have prepared an amazing meal, or the other way around. But no matter the result, we should focus on the process and everything we learn from it. Because having the patience to prepare a complicated meal, read step by step, gather the ingredients… every single one of them is important, and they matter more than what we end up having.

Do you get what I'm saying? I might sound complicated, but I'm trying to see the positive side of a cooking fail.

I can't tell you the number of times that I attempted to prepare a good meal and not being able to understand what I did wrong. Expectations versus reality plays a big role in cooking, and it might be the cause of the frustration that cooking can cause. We get in the kitchen with an idea of trying to master a recipe, and somehow, along the process, things get out of hands and be have a burnt dish.

If you have ever faced an experience like this, have you eaten your failed dish? I'll confess that whenever I tried my failed meal, I enjoyed it. Maybe it was because I put a lot of effort into it, and I wanted to thank myself for the time that it took me. I don't recommend it, though… I'm not sure it's safe or healthy, so don't try it at home.

Besides that, the only good thing that I can take out of cooking fails is the memes that were created from them. I love how people aren't afraid of laughing at their own mistakes and are even brave enough to share them on the internet. So, to honour that attitude that I applaud, I'm writing this story for you.

Nobody can make you do anything that you don't want to do, whether it's going on a date with someone you don't want to hang out with, buying something you don't want to spend money on, or hosting a dinner in your house. You never ever have to do it if you don't want to. Saying 'no' is a full sentence that holds power; it is denying, it is rejecting, it is saying 'no'. You don't even need to give people an explanation; by just saying that simple word, you are free from doing what you didn't want to do. It is that powerful! So use it, and live by it. Life will be a lot better when you start saying 'no' and start honoring your own words.

In this story, we had a sister who is tired of hosting Thanksgiving dinner at her house, as it is not only hosting, providing the place to do the celebration, but also making the grocery list, buying almost everything, and preparing the meals they are going to eat. Why does she need to be in charge of that? Can't someone else take care of it? Why aren't they even providing the food? She already has to clean her place before and after, but to also be in charge of buying the food is crazy. She shouldn't be preparing even more things for her house, and paying for those things is just crazy. Why do all the other family members get to enjoy the holiday while she has to work and do everything?

Thanksgiving is a celebration, a holiday, for everyone. Then why do some members of the family get to enjoy it as such while others have to do everything? This has only one solution: for this woman not to do anything. Don't host! Just don't do it. They can't just come into your home anyway. Go to a nice restaurant with your mom, enjoy the dinner, celebrate, and let the rest of your family take care of themselves. You don't owe them a celebration, they do owe you at least a thank you for all the celebrations you hosted.

The fact that the husband will be there too doesn't mean his labor is equal. I suppose it isn't equal when it's only their kids either, but at least there are fewer people to care for.

The woman in this story anticipates her vacation experience becoming about remembering schedules, organizing meals, handling meltdowns, cleaning after the kids, and organizing herself around everyone's needs, while her husband gets to sit back, relax, and enjoy the view.

The ex offering to pay for everything is completely beside the point. She could literally give her extra money if she wants, but the labor and the emotional exhaustion won't be worth it. What I do think is relevant is that she places a boundary only for the other two kids from the other woman's previous marriage. I think that is less about labor and more about who she really considers part of the family and who she doesn't, even subconsciously.

What's happening to this woman is normal and understandable, but when we are trying to blend a big family, we have to know that situations like these might come up. I'm not saying she should stop complaining and go on vacation. I definitely think labor division should be equal, but there is something to be thought about in relation to those two kids.

Wouldn't it be a little unfair if they went without them? Maybe not; I don't know, but that should definitely be handled by the husband who doesn't seem very hands-on.

I guess it's fair to say that if talking doesn't work, cancelling the vacation and using the money for something else is a much better option than going on vacation to get stressed and exhausted. Do whatever it takes to relax! You deserve it!

I'm surprised she is actually asking herself whether she is being inconsiderate

We're in 2026, and some women still think their duty is to cook and clean for their boyfriends. It doesn't matter whether the boyfriends contribute in any shape or form to the relationship; they're simply not expected to. In fact, they're not expected to do anything but exist and be catered to by their girlfriends.

I thought that dynamic was a thing of the past, but as I read more and more stories from Reddit, it seems that it isn't. To me, this type of dynamic is a valid option if it works for you, of course, but at least we should try to make it fair. If you're supposed to cook and clean, then your boyfriend should be supposed to do something else; at the very least, support you financially.

That said, I'm glad the internet exists nowadays because the woman who posted this story is getting to a much broader audience than she would've years ago. Maybe, at another time, she would've told this only to her family, and she wouldn't have been able to hear different takes and opinions.

Also, if you want, the internet can give you anonymity, so you can talk about things without fear of being judged or recognized. That's a truly powerful tool when it comes to complicated situations like the one below.

Luckily, this woman lives in 2026; she posted this story on Reddit, and out here we are not about shaming anyone for liking makeup or for choosing to cook whenever they want.

As I always say, not every situation is solvable; sometimes people show their true colors, and you should walk away. It's the only option.

Looking back, I could've confronted my roomie about this, but I just wasn't prepared. You can't just shut the door in most kitchens as you would in your bedroom, so anyone can walk in at any time.

It's a weird cycle, one that is hard to grasp when you realize how easy it is to break it. Why create an issue where there isn't any?

We all struggle with the urge to procrastinate on every single thing we need to do. We don't want to clean our house, we have no desire to fold the laundry, and don't get us started on tasks at work. We refuse to believe there is a single person out there who is always completing their tasks on time without a drop of procrastination in their bones. It is simply human nature, and you will not convince us otherwise.

That said, adult life has proven to us that procrastination usually leads to more complications, especially in the workplace. If you have a task due in two weeks, it's perfectly normal to stall it for a few days, but once it gets closer to the deadline, it would not do anyone any good if you hold it off any longer. Better to get it over with than start looking for excuses to tell your supervisors, especially since most of the tasks we tend to ignore are ones that can take just a few minutes to complete. As great minds once said: just do it.

Why would a company want everybody working from the office and then not provide enough space?

Although it has its detractors, a lot of people would agree that it is a great thing to be able to work from home. It offers flexibility, saves money, and normally gives employees the breathing room to feel like their lives are not entirely ruled by their jobs. These are all perks that make hybrid roles even more sought-after than ever.

However, a lot of employers dislike remote work for the same reason that their employees love it. They prefer to have them in the office where they can monitor them and also justify the rent that they're paying. Ultimately, though, companies need to make their workplace a relatively pleasant place to be if they want their workers to feel like it is worth coming there. It might not be necessary, but it might help to keep turnover down.

Ultimately, most employees will return to the office if they do not have a choice, but just like with remote work, there has to be the right kind of system in place to make it functional. As a bare minimum, there needs to be enough desk space for everybody who needs it.

When does "keeping the peace" start looking a lot like accepting disrespect?

Family conflicts come in all shapes and sizes: it doesn't matter who's involved, but somehow there's always room for more problems. And especially when it's wedding season. Inside families, I've noticed that some start competing with each other to see who has the bigger wedding or who spends more money, and don't get me started on the venues and the dates.

I've noticed this exact issue with my own family: my two aunts fought to see who was getting married first, in the first week of September. That was the problem. Can you imagine? Fighting with your sister to see who is getting married that week? I can't cope with that…

Anyway, the problem with this situation is a bit more complicated. A woman has a weird relationship with her sister-in-law, who has always disliked her. She has been dating her boyfriend for four years, and up to that point, she has excluded her in a very subtle way… When her wedding came around, she decided not to seat the woman at the front table because it was family only.

But the problem was that she didn't seat her at another family table… she sat her at the children's table with the other plus-ones, like she didn't even know her. Like another random guest. Needless to say, the woman was upset and tired of those behaviors, so she's now refusing to attend the wedding.

I'm not going to be the person who declares who's right and who's wrong. I don't like how the sister-in-law treats her, and both of them should have a conversation like adults to see what the problem is and make peace. Also, not attending the wedding is a lot as well, and she's now putting her boyfriend in the awkward position of having to choose between the two of them.

As I said, family problems come in all shapes and sizes, and there's always some extra room for more discomfort… Luckily, this is easily fixed with some adult conversation to set the record straight.

Why keep hiring employees that you don't need?

If you've ever been a part of a large company that is growing, you've probably had the experience of getting new, useless coworkers just because your company can afford to pay for them. They aren't particularly good at their jobs, but they are good enough at interviews and personality hires to fenagle their way into a well-paying managerial position, at least for a little while. If your company is small, or experiencing a lot of layoffs due to economic difficulties, you probably don't have many useless employees around. Your company probably has the bare minimum of people to keep the place going, and no more. When the economy is bad, there is no place for pure personality hires. You have to be a personality hire and a hard worker all in one!

Some people resent their coworkers because they can't see the value that they bring to the company, so they assume they don't bring any. The guy in this story is incredibly resentful towards the many managers that his company has hired, and on one hand, I don't blame him. It's kind of ridiculous to have five different managers who all struggle with tasks the employees they manage can easily do. On the other hand, I do wonder if he's being a little too hard on them and judging them because they are women. I'm curious to know what you guys think about the guy in this post. Is he overly bitter, or does he have good reasons to be bitter?

Oh, the things we do when we're sleep-deprived…

Misplacing things, forgetting to pick up the children at school, leaving the stove on, and forgetting people's names are just a few of the many things we can do when we're tired and haven't slept well. Heck, I forget people's names even when I sleep well. I swear, I see someone I know, and my mind goes like: "I know that person's face," but the part of my brain that stashes the names goes completely blank, and I end up going like: "Hey, you! How are you?" It's embarrassing at this point, but there's nothing I can do about it. At least it provides me with a handful of funny stories to tell my friends. After all, I'm great at embarrassing myself in front of others, so why stop now?

Well, in this case, this woman definitely won first place in the competition of saying silly things when sleep-deprived. And she most certainly beat me at forgetting people's names. She and her husband had a new baby, and she was not sleeping very well. Her husband got up to go to work in the early morning and ended up falling down the stairs. She woke up from the noise, went to try to help him, and instead of calling him by his name, she called him "Mum" THREE TIMES in a row. Poor thing, she was tired.

When it comes to marriage, there're multiple problems that can arise. One of them comes with the family of each one of them: some might have a closer relationship, while others can feel more distant. Needless to say, there's always conflict over how much they prioritize their own family members. In this story, a wife planned a two-night anniversary getaway, but her husband wants to cancel because his sister said she was coming to visit.

I'm not going to be the one saying who's right and who's wrong. I'll like to discuss the role of family in a couple.

In my personal case, I have a wonderful relationship with my in-laws. I text with them frequently and like to have a close relationship with them; I know it's important for me and for my boyfriend. But one of my best friends can't stand her in-laws. In her case, they are very demanding and needy, and she would not even consider canceling a gateway for them. I think I would.

It's a very personal topic and has a lot to do with everyone's upbringing. Because being in a relationship is not always only about the couple: everyone comes with their own baggage, and the spouse has to be more understanding about each unique situation.

That being said, cancelling an already organized and paid weekend trip because the sister-in-law suddenly decides to come visiting, is a whole different story. There are other things that are involved and, of course, need to be considered as well in this whole situation. The husband is the one who has to face the strangest decision, because now he has to choose between his sister and his wife… and that's not an easy choice.

If you ask me, I'm not sure what I would do. Of course I'd love to see my sister, but at the same time, I already have everything planned for that weekend, and I wouldn't want to cancel it. Let's just say I'm glad I'm not the one who has to make that call.

I've ended relationships for much smaller reasons

I think part of our mandatory emotional education should be that we're allowed to end any relationship we want for whatever reason we choose.

No, it doesn't have to be a huge reason; in fact, there can be no reason at all. Wanting is enough of a reason. Friendships and relationships are all about desire, and the day we stop wanting to be somebody's friend or lover is the day we should leave.

We're taught we should have a big breakup conversation, or have enough of a reason to leave, but sometimes there isn't any. What's the point of keeping a friendship if we don't want to be there for them?

I think part of the problem is that we look at breaking up with a friend as a moral problem, and it really isn't. There doesn't have to be any bad guys or good guys; it's either you feel like seeing someone, or you don't. It really is that simple.

I've distanced myself from many friendships before because my life took another turn and I felt more inclined to see other people. Luckily, most of those friends silently understood that and also focused on the people who naturally gravitated to them.

Of course, not all of us possess that wisdom, and some people fixate on the idea that you owe them something; trust me, that's never the case. I'm not here to tell you you should break all your vows.

Sometimes it's important that you go through some conflict with some relationships and come out the other side, but with others, leaving without needing a reason would be best for everyone.

Also, if your friend only talks about herself, isn't that enough of a reason? Is she literally showing you she doesn't care about you? Isn't that enough of a reason, really?

Sometimes petty people need a taste of their own medicine…

In this case, the pettiness wasn't between two strangers: it was between family. Two sisters and their cousin moved in together while they were in college, and they split rent and utilities. One of the sisters and the cousin wanted to buy a new TV, but the other sister said she couldn't pitch in with money since this time she was tight. The other two bought it anyway. One day, the sister and cousin were gone, and the other sister was home with her boyfriend. They wanted to watch TV, but it turned out all the apps were blocked with a password she didn't have. The sister told her she hadn't paid for it, so she couldn't use it, and that's when the petty revenge came in. She had bought a microwave and an Air Fryer all by herself, but they all shared, so she took both and hid them in her locked room. After all, they still had a stove to cook, and the other two hadn't paid for them. Under their same logic, they weren't entitled to use those appliances either.

Isn't it lovely when you can use their same logic against them? It's definitely satisfying to see that people who are selfish and have a very twisted definition of what a boundary is get taught a lesson. Sure, she didn't pay for the TV. And they didn't pay for the microwave or air fryer. They weren't even paying rent and utilities on time, so the other one had to take over so they wouldn't get behind on their payments. Even though it is a good thing to keep track of your money, especially when you live with someone, there's a difference between being responsible and just being cheap and selfish. The sister and cousin seem to be leaning closer to the latter. Oh well, at least they will learn to share.

As kids, living in a hotel sounded like the coolest thing you could possibly do. Every morning, you wake up and go to the breakfast buffet to have all the pancakes you could along with countless of other delicious options. You didn't have to worry about making your bed or cleaning your room; there is a whole staff to do that for you while you're at school. And upon your return "home", you jump into the pool and do your homework while sipping on a nice milkshake you put on your room tab.

If we're being honest, this kind of life doesn't sound so bad even as adults. We know we would probably grow sick of this routine at some point, but we wouldn't say no to a funded extended stay at a nice hotel and give this lifestyle a try.

When something similar was offered to this employee, however, they were hesitant to accept. Not because they were not excited about the pancakes for breakfast or the pool, but because they weren't sure if this decision would actually move them further in their career. The offer they got was to move into one of their company's hotels for 6 months and supervise its operation. The big downside, according to the employee, is that their title would not change, so they would not have "manager" on their resume, at least not officially. There is an argument to be made that looking after other people's kids for a living can be almost as taxing as having them yourself. How can coparenting responsibilities be divided justly?

Coparenting is a practice that has become more common, as families grow in unexpected ways. Parents try to put their children's happiness and safety as a priority, while also attempting to balance the challenges and opportunities of a new romantic relationship. This reality completely changes the definition of what having a sibling means. Half-brothers and sisters and adoptive siblings quickly become the new normal for kids in these types of family units. What could be perceived as a complicated situation can also be an opportunity for children to share experiences with other kids that will grow to become lifelong friends. Take it from me, being a kid of co-parenting myself.

That said, if parenting is already hard enough, try multiplying the responsibilities and duplicating the votes that need to be taken into account when making important life decisions. That is to say, raising one's child already feels impossible at times. Now imagine trying to work with your partner's exes to try to raise a lot more children. It is quite tricky to be on the same page, to say the least. But ultimately, getting there between co-parents means kids will get to have bigger and happier families.

Growing up surrounded by siblings, from birth or acquired later in life, is simply an opportunity that is worth all the troubles. On that note, if you're considering giving that to your own kids and venturing into the ups and downs that coparenting is, make sure that at least your significant other is willing to put just as much effort in as you. It is very hard, but when proper communication and teamwork enter the workflow, coparenting can really turn into a unique and wonderful experience for all parties involved. On the other hand, if you feel like you're going to carry the load on your own, it's best to tap out; for it will prove to be too much strain on one individual.

This story closely relates to the entanglement that coparenting can become. A mother of a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old is trying to fit into her husband's first kid's life: a 12-year-old and a couple of adoptive sons. As a whole, this is one big family. Is everyday life exhausting, or are we all just collecting meme material at this point?

After working in the meme industry for quite some time now, I realized that my favourite type of memes is those that have to do with daily life and routine. There's something special about them, and for me, they are the most relatable type of meme. Besides, life is very stressful, and one of the things that we can do to make it better is laugh about it. Yes, with that, we might not fix everything that's wrong with it, but at least we can have some fun and enjoy our day a little bit more.

Well, since the meme expert here, I'm going to tell you when. Actually, right before you get into work. If you commute on public transportation, then right there. Getting a taste of your own medicine is something that every manager needs to go through.

If you realize something at work isn't working the way it should, that maybe a process needs some changes, or that a business decision needs to be taken in the opposite direction, would you say something? And if you did and got completely shut down by your boss, saying it's not that important or completely dismissing your observation, then what? Would you just wish they had to do the same work you do so they can see how you are right? Well, if that is the case, then I have a story to tell you.

We have an employee who was hired not only because of their great work, but also because they notice when things aren't working and fight for them to get fixed. They are a pusher; they tell their manager when they are wrong so that the mistake gets fixed. That's why, when they noticed that one client was not benefiting the business; on the contrary, it was making the workplace unbearable and more stressful than it should be, they had to do something. After being dismissed by their higher-ups over and over, the manager finally agreed to take care of the situation. This was possible due to the employee requesting PTO for the time of year this client always orders one year in advance —yes, it is crazy, but it worked. We can judge the ways, but not the results. Some parents don't know when to stop meddling in their children's lives, and that's what eventually pushes them to go almost no contact.

A young man and his girlfriend went through this. They moved into his parents' house temporarily, but since they and the mother had very different personalities and habits, things weren't working out. They decided to move into another place, so they started apartment hunting. The guy's mother was convinced she knew the place they were moving into, and they didn't bother to tell her they were actually moving to a different apartment. Oops…

The thing with these kinds of parents is that they're the ones playing the victim when their children finally set boundaries, create some space between them, and limit contact. If their children make clear that they need their life and their space, walking all over that request is only going to make them lose them. We're not talking about kids or teenagers, who do need their privacy, but still also need their parents' support and general supervision. We're talking about adults, with a stable job, a committed relationship, and the expectations of getting married. They are independent, and they need space to live their lives however they want, not how their parents like. Granted, that is a little difficult if they are living with them to save money. After all, there are not many decisions you can make when you live in someone else's house, but that's why this couple moved out. Imagine how complicated the relationship with the mother must be for none of them to want to tell her where they actually live.

Sounds like a dream manager to me

I don't know whether the original poster was complaining or what. I don't see any flaws in his methods; personally, I wish all jobs were like this.

Maybe I'm speaking only for myself, and I know it's no good to generalize, but being flexible around work hours as long as deadlines are met is the best strategy a management team can use.

I used to struggle a lot with things like these. I often finished my work early in many jobs, then had to wait long, greyish hours to get out of there because I wasn't supposed to leave until 5 pm. That never sat right with me, but it was one of those rules you just have to play along with because how much you complained about it wouldn't make a difference.

Back in the day, I would have been grateful to hear I could work at any hour as long as things got done, even if that time were limited to a frame. I understand that things depending on you can sound scary, but it is the basis of any well-functioning team.

I suppose management will be there if you have any doubts or complaints; it's their job. Nonetheless, you won't be completely alone, but you will be completely responsible.

We should normalize that some days we need to work slower and other days faster. Some days we need to work earlier, other days later. It's not the end of the world, and companies usually can manage. If we started trusting each other and respecting timings, I think the workplace would be much more rewarding, and we wouldn't feel so stressed.

After all, we would produce more, work better, and be less stressed, so we would be more proactive; isn't that everything that matters to the companies that hire us?

Sometimes I wonder what exactly managers do and why they are managers in the first place.

Many times, they don't seem to make much sense. They rarely ever know what really goes on in the office, their instructions are confusing, and their qualifications are, at the very least, questionable. Oftentimes, they seem to be working for a different company and are not caught up with what's going on in the one they actually work at. They end up giving instructions that are out of touch with reality and that only make the work all the more difficult. Other than that, when they don't catch the mistakes someone else made and the project fails, they will always find someone to blame except themselves.

On rare occasions, managers do come around and start taking responsibility for what is supposed to be their job. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's also not impossible. And in this case, something like that happened. The manager had told his employee to stop correcting other people's mistakes in files, and so the employee did. When things stopped working the way they were supposed to, the manager complained, and the employee told him that he was just following instructions. Even though he wasn't thrilled with the answer, the manager started asking for the employee's opinion afterwards, before making decisions. Not a usual thing to see, but refreshing nonetheless. It shows that anyone can correct their train of thought with the right push.

It's ok; we all want to be the centre of attention sometimes. As long as we're open about how petty and childish it is, it's freeing, and it might even be funny. If we try to hide it or claim some moral high ground, it becomes twisted.

It's funny that this story is even about being the centre of negative attention. OP thinks that people aren't calling her because they are deliberately rejecting her; the reason is probably much bleaker: they don't think about her at all.

I think all that hurt and anger might be poorly directed at them. I think what's really happening is that she is mad at herself for choosing to call those friends and not others who are really present in her life. Or maybe sad because she doesn't really have those. That's completely valid and also normal; once we grow into adulthood, we sometimes drift apart from people who used to be very important in our lives.

Weddings are an important part of some people's lives, and they bring a lot of feelings and considerations to the surface. I would suggest stopping for a moment, re-evaluating her invitations, and choosing the people she feels comfortable and cherished with.

After all, it's a night to celebrate her engagement and her and her future husband's life. It's never too late to uninvite people if they are going to make you feel bad. It's your ceremony and an event to remember!

I wouldn't think about it twice; even if it's sketchy, even if people complain. Gossip will eventually subside, and the memories of your great wedding will remain! Go for it, uninvitation queen! Uninvite everyone and make a new, exciting list!

Some people have a really weird way of trying to invite you into their lives. I don't know where it comes from, but what happened to this woman has probably happened to most of us, if not all of us.

Some people bond through sadness or their ugly parts, and they unconsciously (at best) point out yours to connect. If you're vulnerable enough, you'll probably end up hooked by the tactic. You'll identify with the image they're reflecting to you and immediately form a trauma bond with them.

Luckily, this woman posted her story online before doing that, because nothing good will ever come of it. It's a tale as old as time, and it's manipulative, whether it's conscious or not.

Having someone who wants to 'save you' might sound altruistic at first, but it's likely someone who wants to remain in the hero role, and for that to happen, someone else has to remain perpetually a victim; and that's where everything gets messy.

I swear those people will help you enough to keep you afloat, but never enough for you to stand on your own two feet, and that's not real love.

I believe we are all desperate at some point; we're all lonely; we're all broken; some people will want our company regardless. Not to save us or to bring us down, only because they enjoy it. That's the kind of people we should fight to keep beside us. The rest can go home to their mommies.

Being open and kind is always a virtue, but it comes with the great responsibility of learning to practice it. Not everybody deserves our openness or our capacity to be vulnerable.

Should employees always be penalized for prioritizing family responsibilities over work?

Jobs and kids are known to be a pretty incompatible mix, but that doesn't change the fact that most parents need to be able to work to afford their kids in the first place. Childcare is an issue that most moms and dads have to grapple with at some point, whether they have a job or not, but it is undeniably a more pressing issue when they are working. It isn't always going to be bring your kid to work day.

While most would argue that family has to take priority over a job, not all companies are going to see it that way. They want to make sure that they are getting the best deal possible on every employee they have, and that usually means that they have to make themselves available whenever their employer wants them.

When there is an appropriate babysitter in place, this isn't always so much of a problem. If working hours change, though, it's very possible that a parent may not be able to accommodate both that and their children at the same time. This is the endless issue for involved parents who also want to do well at their jobs.

The best Uno reversed situations I have seen in a while.

It's funny how managers and bosses have no problem firing someone without much notice or care, but they sure get offended when the burned-out employee they definitely aren't paying enough leaves. It doesn't matter to them if they got notice from the employee; they just get bothered by the fact that they are able to leave the toxic workplace. This story is funny because I love how this employee acted; he did everything perfectly calculated. It gets to a point where even his direct manager had to clap back at him. He got involved in a performance review over one little mistake that was not really that important, got shamed by being asked to hop on a meeting without knowing that human resources was going to be there as well. And he was going to get fired for all that and just thought of a way out. He was a perfectly good employee; making a mistake doesn't undermine all his previous effort, especially as he has been with the company for several years. But to this boss, nothing really mattered.

One mistake and you are out? I get that when it is a very big mistake or if it involves a very important client. But this wasn't like that. This account was not one that the company would have deemed as important. This employee was well respected due to his hard work and commitment to the company. This situation didn't have to end like this at all. But I'm really glad that this employee was smart enough to notice what was happening before it truly happened. It is funny that this manager got so mad; he definitely had no reason to. He had no problem lying to the employee for the first meeting and getting human resources involved without his knowledge, but now he takes offense at the fact that he did the exact same thing. The employee got played first, but he had the last laugh. I clap for him, and I wish other employees in this situation would realize what they need to do in a case like this one.

Why does she feel like she's entitled to her money anyway?

It's always good for adult children and their parents to keep a little distance as they age. I'm not saying that you should move to the other side of the country to get away from your mother if you don't want to do that! I'm not even saying that it's wrong to talk every day or even see each other multiple times a week. But it's important to set boundaries so your parent isn't treating you like a teenager or a child.

Imagine if your mom went through your bank statement and criticized you for spending too much money on coffee. It would be one thing if you were struggling to maintain a budget and asking your mom for help, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about her going through your personal stuff without your permission and giving you unsolicited advice about how you should run your life. I don't care how close you are with your mom; that is inappropriate in all circumstances. Many parents are unwilling to accept that they cannot control what their adult kids do with their lives and their money, and it drives them wild.

The mom in this story feels entitled to her daughter's money, which is one of the worst things a parent can be. It's one thing if a parent is deeply struggling, and their adult child wants to help them out of the kindness of their heart, but I don't think that's the case here. The mom in this story went through her daughter's things and found an old $500 check. She assumed that her daughter did not deposit the check and felt devastated because she (the mother) really wanted the money and could have used it for herself.

Family has changed their job, making their financial situation different, now they can't afford travelling for Christmas with the rest of the family: 'I communicated this clearly to my in-laws, however, this was not received well.

Sometimes family isn't as understanding as you would expect them to be.

It is crazy to me that your family members sometimes seem like the only people who are always going to be by your side, or like they are obliged to love you forever. When in reality, they can be incredibly not understanding of your situation, mean, and malicious. That's why I hate the whole stereotype of "family stays together", because that isn't true for everyone. It seems like they would act that way and try to preserve the family at all costs. But once you don't do things as they want you to, you get flagged as non-family. They criticize you behind your back and punish you for not doing what they were expecting you to do. That's, in my opinion, enough not to consider family something indispensable; if you do, they will end up turning their back on you one day out of nowhere.

In the story below, we have a family of non-understanding, entitled people. You invite your family for Christmas; if they can make it, then you don't get mad and blame them. You accept it because they must have a reason why. If they explicitly tell you their reason and it's due to their current financial situation, then you act understandingly; you offer to help or just accept that they can't make it. You don't get mad; that is the worst way to act. I cannot believe that your in-laws, or in the case of the husband, your parents, would be upset at you for not traveling for the holidays if you aren't getting even a paycheck right now. Their situation is almost critical, and they are too busy being offended over something so materialistic and unimportant. That isn't the real spirit of Christmas; it makes me think you are an entitled person who uses blame and manipulation to get what you want, making your family feel so bad about not attending that they spend money they don't have or request a loan to pay for it. It's crazy that someone would act like that. Shame on the parents/in-laws. This is not a good family attitude at all.

Do you share passwords with other people?

Since we are living in a tech-driven world, our priorities are vastly different from what they were for people in the past. One thing, among many, that technology has changed is the way passwords have a strong hold on a lot of private information we don't want to share with anyone else. We have passwords protecting pretty much our entire lives: From banking information to government sites to our social media. These passwords are so important to us that sharing them with other people is considered an act of great intimacy, something we only do with the people closest to us who we fully and wholeheartedly trust.

Some passwords, however, are easier to share, at least for some people under the right circumstances. A WiFi password is one example of a password people might share with more ease. If you have a friend visiting, for example, giving them the password so they could use the WiFi for the few hours they are at your house doesn't sound like a big deal. After all, what can they possibly do with this information?

But there's a big difference between sharing the WiFi password for a few hours and doing so with a neighbor who is always right next door. If a neighbor asks to use your WiFi, just know that this is a long-term commitment, so you must consider the pros and cons of giving them this little piece of information. Even if they offer to pay for their share of WiFi usage, complications can still happen, just like they did for the residents below.

Sometimes you have to accept defeat

We can't pull off a perfect Uno reverse every day; sometimes it goes badly. It's better to accept defeat than to play dumb. As a society, we have forgotten that it's noble to admit your own mistakes.

It must be beautiful, though, for this employee to see that his least favourite coworker finally got what she deserved. Hey! I'm not against nap time being allowed in workplaces, but those naps shouldn't last for half your shift.

Obviously, this lady was meditating to improve her work, not sleeping. So HR now has to explain this and say sorry.

This is a fascinating scene that subverts who gets to occupy the position of the observer and who becomes the observed. This woman should get a standing ovation. If we all learned to defend ourselves like that, maybe we would get so much more from life.

I would not be surprised if this lady got her way after this. Whoever gets to establish what the story is really about- whether it's about her being asleep during work hours or her being harassed- is who wins. You see, it's all about narrative control, and she pulled a magic trick to regain it- chapeau.

She is not denying what happened, but she is making the photograph the questionable object. Indeed, it's not okay for people to take pictures of you while you're unconscious. I'm not defending the fact that she was asleep when she should be working, but you have to admit it: the way she handled it is super funny.

This woman didn't learn how to accept defeat gracefully, but she sure learned how to flip a script and manipulate the narrative in her favour. I mean, we have to recognize talent. We have to give credit where credit is due.

This might be a normalized family dynamic, but that doesn't make it good

I remember once a family member read my diary; it was one of the most traumatic things to ever happen to me. It wasn't that I had anything terrible in it; it was the experience of someone reading your most intimate thoughts, the ones you wouldn't even confess to your closest friend.

I could never write as freely after that. I used to write with the confidence that nobody would ever read those words, not even me. I wrote without pretension, style, or goal. My writing had no artistic value; it was just that- writing. It was just my emotions, my thoughts, my dreams, clashing against each other in a very delicate tapestry.

The beauty was the bigger picture. It was the letter I was sending to the future, years later (maybe today), when I grabbed those diaries and read my most ordinary thoughts from back then and found them so distant, so strange, so naive.

The incident passed for everyone else, except for me. It still has a place in my heart, and it will forever. I know I'll find a way to write about it someday, and it might become another story, one of those that only happen to writers. But it was tough; it was defining.

I guess at some point, your art has to crash into the real world, and with time, what you do with the debris becomes your art.

I'm not saying that what happened to this woman was about art at all; I just digressed, but I know how much an intrusion into your privacy can hurt. All you can do is protect it more, and if you need to, stay away from those who put it at risk in the first place, regardless of who they are.

Why would she take out a card in her daughter's name and not pay it off?

It's wild to me that you can open a credit card for someone under 18. A minor shouldn't be able to borrow money from the bank like that, because they don't fully understand the consequences of swiping plastic. Because minors can get credit cards, the inevitable happens. Their parents take out credit cards in their names once their credit gets so bad that they can't get approved for any new credit cards. In any just society, it would be illegal to put your 3-year-old's name on a credit card and use it to pay the gas bill, but we do not live in a just society. In this society, banks want you to rack up as much credit card debt as possible, because that means more money for them! They will give a credit card to nearly everyone who breathes, even a 6-month-old baby who couldn't possibly use it responsibly on their own.

Some parents take out credit cards in their child's name and use them to build their child's credit. Although that can help build a higher credit score later in life, it can ruin a child's financial life if done improperly. If they put a bunch of charges on a card in their kid's name and forget to pay it off, their kid could be barred from getting their own apartment, even though their credit score isn't their fault.

The girl in this story is just getting started in life, and her mom is already trying to clip her wings. Luckily, she found out that her mom took out a credit card in her name and was able to nip it in the bud before it got even more out of hand than it already was.

It's less about convincing your dad that you worked hard and more about accepting that you don't have to work hard to enjoy what you have

This story is paradoxical. This father worked really hard to pull himself out of poverty and to give his children a life where they wouldn't have to fight so hard to be okay. Now he resents his children precisely because they didn't have to struggle so much as he did.

Although it sounds nonsensical, it's very common. Understandably, someone who spent his whole life fighting for money resents that his daughter doesn't even see money as hard to get. Of course, his daughter gets to live like this because of his merit, but I understand it makes him sad to think about all the times he struggled for something others deem so ordinary.

I believe the hurt this father feels is misdirected at his daughter; obviously, it is something he has to work through on his own. His daughter is not to blame.

Why does it matter so much if her father recognizes that she has grip as well? Obviously, she wants to be seen and appreciated by him, because the problem that they have isn't financial, it is emotional, and it's about inequality and opportunities in life.

The father's identity seems heavily organized around overcoming; he overcame poverty, and he achieved wealth. Sadly, there is no moral failure in being given something, which should not pass down guilt around privileges, so that's something his daughter will have to work through.

The most interesting question for me is whether she'll be able to tolerate the fact that her father might never give her the recognition she wants. To do that, he would have to let go of his identity, and that's too high a price. Growing up, in part, is learning that you can live without that recognition.

Funny how a bad idea becomes brilliant once someone else gets to present it.

I've heard stories like this before, and some of them remind me of a little anecdote that I have for you…

A couple of years ago, I was working for a real estate agency in the marketing department. There were two of us on the team; it was a small one, since we were the ones developing the department. Everything had to be created, and we had a bunch of different ideas. I had one idea, a very good idea that innovated the way we scripted the videos that were showing off the houses that were for sale.

My partner didn't think much of it, since she didn't think it went with the vibe of the company. She had more experience than me and had been working there for two years before I joined, so I trusted her and forgot about it. A couple of days later, my boss called both of us to a meeting, and he basically said to start implementing that idea.

I was surprised and didn't really follow what he said until he congratulated my partner, and then I realized she had presented my idea as her own to my boss. I didn't say anything because I was new and didn't want to cause any problems between the two of us. But I should have said something, not to my boss, but to her. It was my idea, and she shouldn't have done that.

Imagine how I felt when I read this story… it was like I was talking to myself. I'd recommend the employee call the coworker out and claim what she deserves. It was her idea, and she deserves the credit for it. On the other hand, I'll never understand how some coworkers can actually do that and take others' ideas. Aren't we supposed to be a team? We are pushing towards the same goal; why would you do this to me? Anyways, I think I'm taking this too personally now…
