There's no reason this man couldn't enjoy a good cup of coffee from his office chair, yet when he raved and cooed about the joys of his machine, his coworkers insisted he share the good word with them, too.

At first, things were hunky-dory, but soon the office entitlement took over, and this refreshing amenity was being treated more negligently than the 15-year-old Mr. Coffee in the break room.

I'll never understand why some bosses and employers are so adamant that work of the sort that can easily be done on a computer from anywhere must instead be done in an office.

There's always this discussion about some conductive energy, this cultural surge that will happen, that staff will somehow link up like the Power Rangers or something, and with their powers combined, all of that collective energy will be greater than the sum of its parts, leading to new ideas and greater productivity.

If this really happens in real life, I have yet to see it. Working in an office, especially all the time with no flexibility, is draining and, over time, pushes workers into "going through the motions," and any short promise of greater communication and smoother transduction evaporates back into a figment of an ethereal dream.

While it might appear that workers are busier in the office, there is a lot of "performative" work giving that impression amongst all the added sudden distractions and long awkward silences punctuated by someone who probably should have taken a sick day and stayed home coughing a few tables away.

At first, everything seemed simple and manageable. A kind weekly favor doesn't cost much. Why wouldn't you help an elderly neighbor who clearly needs it? Maybe it doesn't take much effort on your part, and you're really helping someone. Maybe you just want to do your good deed for the day. That's fine. It's great to help others, but what happens when someone starts to forget it's a favor and slowly starts to expect more than they should?

Things can get more complicated. People sometimes overlook the fact that you're helping out of kindness and cross the line, acting as if they have the right to demand things you have no obligation to do. At that point, a favor no longer feels like a good deed; instead, it starts feeling more like pressure.

That's what happened to one kind neighbor who offered to do grocery shopping for an elderly woman living upstairs. I'm not saying this was intentional, but the dynamic clearly changed. Maybe receiving that help became the new normal, so the lady started relying on her neighbor a little too much. If you grew up with a pool, you already know how wonderful it can be. On a hot summer day, diving into a chilly pool is the best feeling. When you're a kid, full of energy and having nothing to do all summer long, there's nothing better than spending like 8 hours a day in the pool, making up games with your friends. You dive for rings underwater, play volleyball or catch, and you see who can hold their breath for the longest and who can swim the fastest. There's no limit to the amount of fun you'll have in a pool, whether it's just you and your siblings, or whether your friends are there to join your activities.

But that does raise a few questions. When you're little, even if you're an excellent swimmer, someone definitely needs to keep an eye on you. As a parent, you're supposed to stay by the pool for basically the entire time the kiddos are swimming.

So what do you do when your kid begs to have their friends over? Do you provide popsicles and watch them splash around for hours? And if so… do you let them do this every day, or do they sometimes have to take a turn going to their friends' houses?

What better outcome is there from quitting your job?

The boss in the story below discovered there are consequences to his actions in the office in the best way possible. Well, not the best way for him, but the best way for his entire staff, who couldn't have waited to see him get a taste of his own medicine.

After almost two years of working with this entitled boss, one employee decided enough was enough and handed in their resignation letter, which was the first step in a series of actions that led to the boss's downfall. After this employee left, they got a job for the boss's overworked personal assistant, and after the assistant left, six more employees decided to quit as well. All of a sudden, the boss found himself without eight of his employees, and so shorthanded that there was no one to actually do any of the work.

The company knew that the reason all the employees left was because of the boss's bad attitude towards them, so they demanded that the boss take over all of the work that was left behind. They cancelled the boss's approved vacation to go to Disneyland with his family, and forced him to stay behind and do the job of almost ten people.

All too often, we feel the need to get pulled into their modus operandi, their way of doing and thinking, when we can simply just "Walk away." Bosses don't get much more negligent than this one.

Like many offices, this corporate company went hybrid after 2020, but the rules became flexible fairly quickly. When a senior manager moved away from the city entirely, the team went from coming in a few times a week to once a week for an "all hands on deck" meeting to almost never at all.

The problem was that this aspect of the company culture was not exactly explained to the new hire, who was under the impression that he would be working in a hybrid capacity. However, when he showed up to work on the first day, and no one was there to train him, he started to notice that things were, well, relaxed here, to say the least. He ended up using that flexibility to his advantage… until eventually his boss put two and two together and realized that someone was on payroll who wasn't even working there.

After a long, hard day, nothing feels better than an illustrious hot shower. Washing away the woes of the day, showers have a magical effect akin to a bad-mood detox. Apparently, not everyone shares that sentiment…

This downstairs neighbor didn't feel rejuvenated by the premise of a shower and decided that nobody else in the building was allowed to enjoy their nightly rituals. Whether for noble reasons or selfish cause, nobody should be given power over another person's water source, especially behind their backs. Indignantly, the shower hater started to tamper with the hot water heater, turning it off mid-rinse or dialing back the settings altogether to try and force his neighbors into changing their habits.

But one shower-loving tenant wouldn't stand for it; their daily, spa-like cleanse was far too important.

How would your boss react if you sent them a meme about how much you don't want to do your work? It's dependent on a lot of factors, I think. Such as: Have they just assigned you an important project? Have you been joking around with them lately, or have they been distant? Do they ever send you silly memes? How's the vibe in the entire office?

This person accidentally sent their boss a meme, yet they only intended it to go to a few coworkers. They now think that their boss might fire them over it!

Sometimes it is hard to be the generous neighbor you always imagined yourself to be. Why? Because other neighbors never dreamed of being as generous as you. In this case, one neighbor was kind enough to lend out an expensive tool, but the other neighbor wasn't so kind. Instead, after a week of not getting the tool back, when asked about the tool, this neighbor tried to gaslight the other neighbor into thinking he never lent him the tool in the first place…

At first, the generous neighbor didn't know what to do and walked away frustrated after trying to confront them. It was his word against the other's. Fortunately, a third-party neighbor that wasn't even involved in the drama stepped in to help. He provided security footage from his own home that showed one neighbor walking to the other neighbor's place and then walking out with the tool. So, it was obvious he was the last person to have the tool. After he was told there was footage of him with the tool, his tune changed quickly, but it was too late. He is now the sus neighbor, and there's no going back from that.
