Sail250 Maryland To Bring Tall Ships And International Air Show To Baltimore

Baltimore will welcome more than 40 vessels from around the world this summer as Sail250 Maryland & Air Show Baltimore brings tall ships, Navy vessels, Coast Guard cutters, festivals and a major international air show to the city from June 24 to June 30.

The free, family-friendly event will feature 14 international tall ships, along with U.S. Navy ships, a Royal Canadian Navy vessel, Coast Guard vessels and historic local ships docked throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Ships will be open for free public tours at locations including the Inner Harbor, Baltimore Peninsula, Tide Point, South Harbor and Fells Point.

Tall Ships And Historic Vessels

The visiting tall ships will include vessels from Argentina, Spain, Peru, Italy, Germany, Romania, Uruguay, India, Portugal, Colombia, Ecuador, France and Sweden, along with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle.

Local favorites also will be part of the celebration, including Pride of Baltimore II, Maryland Dove, Mildred Belle, Sigsbee, Lady Maryland and vessels from Historic Ships in Baltimore, including USS Constellation, Lightship 116 Chesapeake, submarine USS Torsk, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 37 and the Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse.

Sail250 is part of a five-city 250th anniversary tour that will travel from New Orleans to Norfolk, Baltimore, New York and Boston.

Air Show To Feature Four Elite Teams

Baltimore also will host the only air show among the five Sail250 cities. The event will bring together the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the British Royal Air Force Red Arrows, the French Patrouille de France and the F-16 Viper Demo Team for a single air show.

Martin State Airport in Baltimore County will serve as the center of the aviation events, with jets taking off and landing throughout the weekend. Flyovers and public safety demonstrations also are planned over the Inner Harbor.

Festivals Planned Across Baltimore

From June 26 to June 28, visitors can attend the Inner Harbor Festival, Fells Point Festival and Baltimore Peninsula Festival, each featuring entertainment, food and interactive programming.

The Inner Harbor Festival will include Living Classrooms’ STEM Exploration Zone at the Harborplace Pratt Street Pavilion, with hands-on activities and exhibits for youth and families.

Martin State Airport and the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum also will host an open house June 27 and June 28 with military aircraft displays, Maryland food vendors, souvenirs and aviation heritage exhibits.

The project brings the first on-site public overnight accommodations to the Emory Waters Nature Preserve. The new site includes eight cabins, a bathhouse, an outdoor pavilion, a picnic area, landscaping improvements and other facility upgrades.

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is Anne Arundel County’s largest natural resource conservation property and is part of the Maryland Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

New Cabins Expand Access To Jug Bay

County representatives, state and elected officials, and community partners gathered Monday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the cabins.

The overnight facilities will allow visitors to spend more time exploring Jug Bay’s wetlands, trails and wildlife habitat. The cabins also will support researchers studying the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and provide a base for educational programs, citizen science work and stewardship activities.

“We aren’t just opening buildings; we are opening doors for the next generation of stewardship,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. “This allows our 64,000 annual visitors to go beyond a day trip and truly immerse themselves in the beauty and science of our wetlands.”

Project Supports Research And Conservation

The project was supported in part by a nearly $1 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, strengthening the county’s partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The cabins will serve as a headquarters for Jug Bay’s 12 active citizen science programs and more than 200 volunteers who support stewardship of the wetlands.

“By deepening the connection between our residents and this ecosystem, we are fostering a lifelong commitment to conservation that will keep these wetlands thriving for years to come,” said Jessica Leys, director of Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks. “These cabins create a vital space for continuing environmental studies.”

More than 140 students from 11 high schools explored career opportunities in the marine and maritime industries during the EYC Foundation’s 15th annual Marine & Maritime Career Expo at Bert Jabin Yacht Yard in Annapolis.

The April 30 event gave students a firsthand look at career paths in a working boatyard, with exhibitors from marine service businesses, maritime companies, military and government agencies, trade schools and colleges.

Students Tour Working Boatyard

The program, which began in 2010 with support from Anne Arundel County Public Schools, is designed to connect students directly with people working in the marine and maritime fields.

Students toured Bert Jabin Yacht Yard with owner Rod Jabin and visited three on-site companies. They learned about Volvo engine service, yacht hull repairs and marine rigging, while also asking about internships, summer jobs, starting salaries and opportunities for advancement.

Interest In Maritime Careers Grows

Student surveys showed the event made an impact. Before the expo, 36% of respondents said they were very interested in marine fields. Afterward, 73% said they were much more interested.

“In our ever-evolving industry, it’s no secret the current supply of talent is insufficient,” said John Staub, the expo’s new chair. “The diverse range of exposures students receive at our event invigorates them to consider a career in marine and maritime fields. This increased motivation has both a short term and long term benefit to employers.”

The expo is one of several EYC Foundation programs that introduce students to the water and marine careers. The foundation also supports graduating seniors through its Marine & Maritime Scholarship program for students pursuing study at a marine or maritime trade school or college.

The Blanca Flor move comes amid a noticeable run of recent downtown Annapolis business closings and storefront changes. Sadona Salon + Spa on West Street announced in April that it would close after nearly 10 years in business, while Pearl Restaurant and its upstairs Ponche Tiki Bar permanently closed at 26 Market Space after a short run, with the owners of Osteria 177 expected to take over the space. UNIQLO To Open New Annapolis Store June 5

UNIQLO will open its new Annapolis store at 2002 Annapolis Mall Road on June 5, bringing the global retailer’s LifeWear apparel for men and women to the region along with a weekend of grand opening events, giveaways and local collaborations.

The store will open at 10 a.m. following a traditional Japanese Taiko drum performance at 9:50 a.m. Grand opening festivities will continue through June 7.

From June 5 through June 7, the first 300 customers in line each day will receive a free UNIQLO knot bag filled with exclusive items.

The first 300 customers who make an in-store purchase of $99 or more during the opening weekend will receive a free tote bag featuring custom artwork by Annapolis artist Kim Hovell. Shoppers making any purchase on June 5 also will receive a voucher for a breakfast treat while supplies last.

Taiko drum performances will take place throughout the weekend, with performances at 9:50 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:50 a.m. Sunday.

New Traffic Signal Planned For MD 2 And Birdsville Road In Davidsonville

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has started work on a new traffic signal at MD 2, also known as Solomons Island Road, and Birdsville Road in Anne Arundel County.

The Davidsonville-area project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection. The new signal will include cameras to help manage traffic and dedicated left-turn signals for northbound MD 2 drivers turning onto Birdsville Road and Birdsville Road drivers turning left onto northbound MD 2.

Work Expected Through Late Summer

Crews will also install “Signal Ahead” beacons on MD 2 before the intersection, upgrade signs and add new pavement markings.

Work will take place during off-peak hours and may include shoulder closures and occasional lane shifts. Temporary signs, barrels and cones will guide drivers through the work zone.

The project is expected to be complete and the new signal activated in late summer 2026, weather permitting.

THURSDAY: Rock The Dock For The Blue Ribbon Project

The Rotary Club of Annapolis will host its Rock the Dock fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, with proceeds supporting The Blue Ribbon Project.

Fundraiser Supports Local Foster Youth Programs

This year’s Rock the Dock will benefit The Blue Ribbon Project, a nonprofit that supports children in foster care and works to provide resources, advocacy and support for vulnerable youth.

The Blue Ribbon Project was founded in 2012 by Taylor Pyles, a survivor and former foster youth. The nonprofit began as a grassroots effort and now serves Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and more than a dozen Maryland counties.

Sue Weber, president of the club, said, “We are honored to partner with The Blue Ribbon Program, an organization whose dedication to supporting children in foster care aligns closely with Rotary’s mission of service above self. Their work provides critical resources, advocacy, and hope to vulnerable youth throughout our community.”

Classic Boat Festival Returns To Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will host the 38th Antique & Classic Boat Festival and Coastal Arts Fair from June 19 to June 21 at its waterfront campus in St. Michaels, bringing classic boats, coastal artists and family activities to the Miles River for Father’s Day weekend.

The annual festival, presented by the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, is one of the largest classic boat shows in the Mid-Atlantic. This year’s theme is “Boats Built in Michigan & the Midwest,” highlighting builders such as Chris-Craft, Lyman, Century, Larson, Gar Wood and Matthews.

More Than 100 Boats On Display

The festival will feature more than 100 cruisers, runabouts and racers across CBMM’s 18-acre campus and docks. Visitors can see wood, fiberglass and metal vessels from several eras, including historic, antique, classic, late classic and contemporary wooden boats.

The weekend also will include a Coastal Arts Fair with artwork, jewelry, home décor and other water-inspired items, along with a Field of Dreams featuring boats for sale, a nautical flea market and children’s activities.

Boat Rides And Cruises

Free boat rides aboard featured vessels will be offered from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

CBMM also will offer ticketed sails aboard the 1955 skipjack Rosie Parks at 10 a.m. and noon Friday and Saturday. The 90-minute sails are $35 for CBMM members and $45 for nonmembers and include festival admission.

Patriot Cruises will offer narrated historical cruises on the Miles River at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus an evening river cruise at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, won their third consecutive game in dominant fashion on Friday night. Playing as the Oyster Catchers alternate identity, Chesapeake clobbered the Erie SeaWolves, playing as the Moon Mammoths, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, by a 14-2 final.

Chesapeake (20-28) tallied a season-best 19 hits on Friday night. Four Baysox batters registered at least three hits, including a first four-hit game at Double-A for Griff O’Ferrall. Six Chesapeake hitters enjoyed a multi-hit performance on Friday in total team domination.

The Baysox bats erupted for a third-consecutive game with a seven-run second inning. Chesapeake sent 11 men to the plate in the frame. The inning began with three consecutive hits, including an RBI double from Frederick Bencosme for the game’s opening tally. A Fernando Peguero single, compounded with an Erie error, brought home two more runs, before Ethan Anderson and Anderson De Los Santos notched back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 5-0. Two batters later, O’Ferrall blistered a double down the left-field line to plate two more runs on what was his second hit of the inning. All seven second inning runs crossed on the line of SeaWolves left-handed starter Carlos Peña (L, 3-2).

Chesapeake added on a run in the fourth on another Erie error and a run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk to Bencosme to go up 9-0.

Baysox left-handed starter Sebastian Gongora was on cruise control on Friday after being afforded the cushion. Gongora did not allow a hit until a leadoff double in the fifth inning and allowed just two runs on two hits in a career-best six and two-thirds innings pitched. Gongora (W, 2-2) struck out four and walked just one batter.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the fifth on an RBI groundout. Erie ran out of available bullpen options by the game’s seventh inning, prompting rostered catcher Aaron Antonini to come on and pitch. The Baysox scored their final five runs of Friday’s game off Antonini, including an Aron Estrada seventh-inning solo homer and RBI hits from Peguero, O’Ferrall, and Adam Retzbach.

Dating back to the start of Wednesday’s game, the Baysox have outscored the SeaWolves 35-7 in the past 27 innings of play.

Chesapeake looks to take the six-game series in Erie on Saturday night. Left-hander Luis De León (1-3, 5.34 ERA) takes the hill for the Baysox against SeaWolves right-hander Sean Hunley (0-5, 8.31 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm from UPMC Park.

Annapolis Marine Art Gallery To Close After Decades At City Dock

A longtime Dock Street business plans to close at the end of 2026, citing a steep decline in customers and revenue during ongoing construction tied to the City Dock Revitalization and Flood Mitigation project.

Annapolis Marine Art Gallery, located at City Dock since 1978, has been a fixture along the downtown Annapolis waterfront for nearly 50 years. Co-owner Samantha Wilkerson told WJZ News that the gallery can no longer withstand the disruption caused by fencing, reduced parking and limited access near the water.

The gallery will move to an online-only business after the storefront closes.

City Dock Construction Impacts Local Business

The City Dock project is intended to protect downtown Annapolis from increased flooding while creating a new waterfront park and improved public spaces. Work is expected to continue into early 2028.

Wilkerson said foot traffic dropped after parking was removed near the waterfront and declined further as construction fencing expanded across the area. She said the gallery’s revenue has fallen by more than 70%, forcing the business to cut staff and plan for closure.

The gallery is one of several downtown businesses affected by the multiyear construction project, which has changed how residents and visitors move through the City Dock area.

Project Is Needed For Long-Term Protection

The city has said the project is necessary to protect the historic downtown business district from worsening flooding and to preserve the long-term viability of City Dock.

And while the finished waterfront park may eventually help the businesses that remain, after nearly five decades at City Dock, Annapolis Marine Art Gallery will not be among them.

Maryland Chefs Sought For Governor’s Buy Local Cookout

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking chef teams to submit recipes for the 2026 Governor’s Buy Local Cookout, which will be held Friday, July 17, in Annapolis.

The annual event highlights Maryland agriculture by pairing chefs with local farmers and watermen to showcase ingredients grown, raised and harvested in the state, including Chesapeake blue catfish, oysters, beef, sweet corn and watermelon.

Recipes Due June 2

Recipes will be selected in four categories: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salad, and dessert. Entries will be judged on simplicity, creativity, ingredient availability, geographic representation and use of local ingredients. At least 50% of each recipe’s ingredients must be locally sourced, and recipes should yield four to eight servings.

“Maryland’s farmers and watermen produce some of the best food in the country, and this cookout is proof that local ingredients can create unforgettable meals,” said Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks. “Supporting local agriculture means supporting Maryland jobs, protecting our farmland and keeping our communities strong.”

Selected teams will prepare and serve their dishes at the cookout. A $200 stipend will be provided by the Maryland Department of Agriculture to help offset costs. Previously submitted recipes are not eligible.

Complete rules and the online submission form are available through Maryland’s Best. Recipes must be submitted by June 2.
