Visitors to Philadelphia should definitely make it a point to see the 1876 Centennial Exposition Memorial Hall, located at East Memorial Hall Drive and the Avenue of the Republic in Fairmount Park. This famous landmark, is an impressive example of neoclassical Beaux-Arts architecture, created by Fairmount Park Chief Engineer Hermann Schwarzmann, as the Centennial Art Gallery for the Centennial Exposition, the first World’s Fair in the United States.

Celebrated at the time to honor the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this magnificent building was dedicated by President Ulysses S. Grant, and later served as the Philadelphia’s art museum until 1928. At the Exposition in 1876, it was estimated that 10 million visitors viewed this impressive building, which was truly a one of a kind marvel. Unique for its massive size, it is composed entirely of glass, iron, brick, granite, marble, and ornamental plaster. Not only is it completely fireproof, the initial cost of construction was $1.5 million, and both of these features were extremely rare for the time. The statue on top of the massive dome, which reaches 150 ft., is Columbia, a symbol of the United States, and other statues around the building represent commerce, agriculture, navigation, and industry.

Memorial Hall is the sole survivor of the Centennial Exposition that once contained many other large buildings. Throughout its long and colorful history after 1928, it served as a police station, and at one time even contained two swimming pools, before it was taken over by the Fairmount Park Commission.

Today, families will be thrilled with the fact that it is now Philadelphia’s, child friendly, Please Touch Museum, designed especially for children 7 and younger. It includes six large exhibit areas, including a 40 ft. representation of the Statue of Liberty arm and torch, and a carousel, as well as examples of over 12,500 historic toys. Visitors will also enjoy the restaurant, the Please Taste Café, and the Kid’s Store. This building is a work of art in itself, and children of all ages will be impressed with Memorial Hall.

While it has not reached the popularity of some of the other safari areas of Africa, Kenya's Lake Bogoria National Park is gaining ground thanks to its soda lake that covers an area of approximately 30-square kilometers.

This soda lake, like others in Kenya, provides safari goers with some of the most amazing sights of the African fauna. The park offers visitors a unique viewing point of flamingos in the area. With the small equatorial lake only reaching a depth of nine meters and no outlet to other bodies of water, the soda lake at Lake Borgoria National Park evaporates and leaves a large amount of minerals in the ground, leading to a rare combination of events that helps safari goers taking in grand views. Thanks to the minerals left at the soda lake, Kenya’s Lake Bogoria has a large population of blue-green algae, which makes it a prime location for flamingos.

For safari-goers that wish to see more of the African flora than fauna, Lake Bogoria National Park also offers the Loburu Hot Springs, which provides for a captivating view of the African landscape. As with all hot springs and geysers, the liquid exiting said landscape comes out at extreme temperatures and viewers will need to be careful when going near them. The Maasai call Lake Bogoria - Mbatibat - and with its bed of geysers and hot springs, the area has become a viewing point for those that want to witness one of nature’s most spectacular events. Average height of an eruption from the blowholes is two-and-a-half to three meters (8-10 feet).

When planning a trip to Lake Bogoria National Park, the location of the park is just off the B4 away from Nakuru. The main entrance is located at the Loboi Gate and is located just before Marigat off the B4.

Refreshing mint tea, spicy tagines and hearty couscous might be the flavours that come to mind when you think of Morocco and Marrakech, however if you look past the dishes marketed to tourists, then there is a wealth of undiscovered cuisine in this fantastic city. There’s so much more to taste in Marrakech, and if you’re thinking about taking a holiday here, then getting to grips with the local food should be a priority.

There’s no other city in the world that offers the diverse variety of foods like Marrakech, and the experience of eating in the city not only reflects the traditional recipes used, but the beautiful surrounding historical architecture as well. There are many things a restaurant can provide, but there is no match for the excitement, culture and traditional experiences of Marrakech. Let’s take a look at some of the best local foods on offer.

Harira soup

Harira soup is one of the most popular dishes in Marrakech, with the locals as well as the tourists. The dish is also very simple to make, and consists of creamy soup made from pasta, lentils and chickpeas. You can also add spices to the soup depending on flavoursome you want it to be. Before this dish is served, it is combined with coriander, lemon, saffron, ginger and lemon. When served, diners are also provided with local fresh bread and figs, and this soup remains the stable dish during the Ramada festival.

Pastilla - A sweet pastry delight

This dish offers a surprising element that many tourists are unaware about, and again it is one of the most popular meals in Marrakech. Stuffed with either chicken or pigeon, this dish consists of layers of meat laced with icing sugar! Anywhere else on the planet, meat and sweet sugar would seem out of place, but never in Marrakech! Pastilla is a great choice of desert after a meal, and can be prepared for takeout as well as a sit down sweetener.

M’semmen - Moroccan pancakes!

If you’ve ever tried a roti, or a traditional pancake, then you’re going to love M’semmen! There are hundreds of market vendors in Marrakech that sell this delightful sweet day and night, so there’s absolutely no excuse not to try one, and as they come with a selection of tasty toppings, M’semmen can be enjoyed by everyone.

Tempted? Go taste for yourself

Cheapflights offer the best travel deals to Marrakech, so it’s best to book early in order to get the most out of your money. Furthermore, before you leave on your holiday, make sure you do a little research into the best markets, stalls and shops to buy food.

In 1189, Germany’s Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted the growing city of Hamburg an important charter: They could hold markets in the city, and ships could travel customs-free along the lower Elbe River to the North Sea. Signed on May 7, 1189, this charter set the stage for the development of what is today, more than 800 years later, one of Europe’s busiest ports and the largest in Germany.

Recognizing the importance of this port, in 1977 city organizers created Hafengeburtstag or the Hamburg Port Anniversary. For several days each May, more than one million visitors descend upon Hamburg to celebrate the birth of the harbor and the city’s naval history.

The 2013 Hafengeburstag will take place from May 9 - 12, coinciding with the public holiday celebrating the Ascension. For four days the harbor comes alive with special ship parades, christenings, fireworks, parades and the legendary “Tugboat Ballet.”

Tall Ships, cruise ships and tugboats, oh my!

As has been the tradition since the festival began, the festivities will kick off on opening day with the Grand Arrival Parade. This parade of more than 300 vessels will cruise along the Elbe, led by the German Navy sail-training ship the Gorch Fock. Among the ships arriving will include some of the grandest tall ships from around the world, including the Cisne Branco that is sailing to Hamburg all the way from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the festival.

The majestic tall ships won’t be the largest ships to join the parade. Thirteen cruise ships will also make the journey to Hamburg, including the Fram from Norway and several German cruise ships like the MS Deutschland. And while she won’t be a part of the Grand Arrival Parade, the Queen Mary 2 will arrive in Hamburg for a 12-hour stay on the last day of the festival.

Visitors won’t be limited to viewing the ships from the sidelines. Almost all of the ships participating in Hafengeburstag will be open to visitors, who can explore the ships and catch a glimpse of what life is like on the open sea.

The Tugboat Ballet and more

Among the most popular Hafengeburstag events is the Tugboat Ballet. Similar to other events held around the world (Seattle and Sydney also host water-based ballets), this humorous and entertaining show features the generally ungraceful tugboats maneuvering around the harbor in time to classical music.

For those who want something more fast-paced than the slow-moving tugboats, the festival also offers events for the more adventurous — as well as the smallest attendees. Along the festival promenade, which extends from Kehrwiederspitze to the Fish Auction Hall, attendees will find amusement rides as well as nearly 500 stalls selling food, handcrafts and other items. Buy a ticket for a hot air balloon ride or helicopter tour for a bird’s eye view of the harbor and the city of Hamburg. Or, take in one of several planned live music shows on stages throughout the festival area.

A taste of everything

A celebration isn‘t complete without food, and the Hafengeburstag has something for everyone in the gastronomic delights category. For 2013, the festival has partnered with Italy to present a taste of la dolce vita — the sweet life — for the festival goers. Highlighting the Liguria region of Italy, organizers plan to open several small trattorias where visitors can grab a bite to eat as well as taste wines from this northwestern coastal area.

Of course, traditional German fare will be easy to find; given the nautical focus of the festival, expect plenty of seafood as well as street food favorites like curry wurst, a traditional German bratwurst coated in a curry-flavored ketchup sauce. Kebabs are also a popular treat among festival-goers, reflecting the influence of Germany’s large Turkish population.

Whether you’re there for the tall ships, the fireworks or the food, Hamburg’s Hafengeburstag is one of the city’s biggest celebrations and offers a good time for all ages. It’s not every day you celebrate an 824th birthday.

About the Author: A native New Yorker, Sabrina Kurth traveled to Germany as a child to visit relatives living near Hamburg — and they brought her to Hafengeburstag to watch the tugboat ballet. Now a travel writer, she returns as often as possible. If you want to catch this year’s festivities, she suggests you click here to search for hotels in Hamburg.

At street level, Bangkok is a whirlwind of tuk-tuks, honking horns, crowds and traffic jams. It is exciting, but easy to get overwhelmed if you are not used to such a sensory overload. However, from above you can survey its green expanses and enjoy the how the river peacefully meanders through the city.

During your trip to Bangkok, rise above the chaotic and bustling streets to sip a cold drink at one of these ultra-hip rooftop bars. They are the perfect vantage point to watch a stunning sunset and the twinkling city lights. They offer stylish drinks in a laid-back atmosphere and make the perfect finish for a day of shopping at the MBK Center, visiting the Temple of the Reclining Buddha or dining on seafood at the floating market.

Sky Bar by Lebua

This bar has a vintage feeling to it and was the site where a key scene from “The Hangover 2” was filmed, giving it a Hollywood connection. Sky Bar is the highest 360-degree rooftop bar in the city and it is located on the 63rd floor. You make your entrance on a sweeping staircase and the bar juts over the edge of the roof.

The view of the city is spectacular, as it features the river. While you are there, try a Hangovertini which is a delicious blend of rosemary honey, Martini Rosso, apple juice and green-tea liquor.

Blue Sky Rooftop Restaurant

This restaurant and bar, located at Centara Grand Lad Prao Hotel, has great cocktails and international cuisine with a stunning view of Bangkok. The bar is perched on the 24th floor and has a panoramic view of downtown Bangkok, including green and leafy Chatuchak Park below. At night, it is fascinating to watch the steady stream of lights.

Aside from the view, this bar and restaurant also boasts a superb collection of cocktails and gourmet meals, featuring creative takes on international cuisine.

Long Table

This swanky restaurant and bar is great to head to if you are looking for delicious and creative gourmet food, stunning views and good conversation. It is on the 25th floor and features gorgeous views of the Sukhumvit area.

This bar is designed for socializing. You will end up sitting at a long table (hence the name) with other patrons. These communal tables make it easy to strike up a conversation with a stranger and make new friends, leading to an evening of mingling.

Vertigo at the Banyan Tree Hotel

Relax into the comfy sofas at Vertigo and watch the river wind through the city. This bar has an extremely relaxed atmosphere. It will make you feel like you are on top of the world.

While you are there, order a “Vertigo Sunset.” This signature drink is a fruity and light blend of lime, cranberry, pineapple and Malibu that will make you feel like you are on a tropical beach.

L’Appart

This French restaurant and rooftop bar, located on the 32nd floor, has a unique design. It is styled to look like a luxury Parisian apartment from the turn of the 19th century. When you visit, you can eat in the living room, on the terrace, in the library or in the kitchen! This fascinating restaurant makes you feel like you are a member of high French society and the cuisine is superb. The dishes are a mix of classic French cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, such as snow fish steamed with ginger, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves.

The rooftop bar is also superb and has a balcony that wraps around the building a full 180 degrees, giving guests a view of the lights of Silom and Lumpini Park.
These are five examples of the best rooftop bars that bustling Bangkok has. Why not head for a cocktail in the clouds and check them out?

Old world competitors from the Bordeaux and Burgundy region have got their work cut out to hold on to the lion’s share of wine exports as South African fine wine continues to make a splash across the world.

South Africa has varied weather conditions and topography. This promotes the best qualities of Bordeaux-style reds, without all of the environmental calamities of the European region. South Africa's sunshine also means a similar level of ripeness and alcohol content as Bordeaux varieties, without the threat of hail, rain and frost that can ruin European wines.

Dalla Cia

Dalla Cia is one of the oldest winemakers in South Africa, having paved the way for many other innovators since starting out in 1980. Dalla Cia sources its grapes from the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch and takes a slow and methodical approach to oak maturation, that allows the wine and oak to interact gradually. This releases the colour and the intricacy of the flavour and bouquet at a leisurely pace.

Treaty Tree Reserve

This white wine blend is a barrel-fermented Sauvignon and Semillon. It's a vibrant and light accompaniment to food such as seafood and chicken; evocative of a sunset on the Cape Town coastline or perhaps an outdoor spring picnic. The entire spectrum of foodie enjoyment is encapsulated in this layered and complex wine. With equal parts zest and softness, it won't fail to impress.

Music Room

This is a Cabernet wine that lives up to its melodic and harmonious name. It blends creamy textured tannins with a delicate softness. Winemakers can create a Cabernet in many regions across the globe. However, to create a brilliant Cabernet takes an exceptional vineyard, a dedicated practice and sublime grapes. This wine hails from three different vineyards: a farm called Wildepaardekloof, which means 'Wild Horse Valley in Africaans, a vineyard high up in isolated mountains; a vineyard called Silkbush in the Waaihoek mountains; and from a farm called Glen Fruin. The result is a symphony of blackcurrant and mint flavours, and a textured blend of creamy tannins that complements rich and intense foods.

Savage Wines

New kid on the block, Savage Wines, is the creation of renowned winemaker Duncan Savage. He was the wine maker at Cape Point wines and has been creating amazing wines for a while now. Now he's launching his own label, simply called Savage Wines. The first cab off the rank is Savage Red 2011, which is a red blend of 72% Shiraz, 7% Cinsaut and 21% Grenache. The bouquet features an amazing array of aromatics like fine cherries, pepper sauce and spices. Expect a silky, slinky, peppery experience for the palate.

Another exciting wine from Duncan Savage is the Savage White 2012. This comes from the high-altitude vineyards of Villiersdorp. This white wine mix is a smashing array of 30% Semillon and 70% Sauvignon, that's aged in 100% French oak for 10 months. The result is a stunning wine of complexity and sophistication.

South African fine wine is like the younger, fresher and more innovative cousin to the old world European wines. Ignore it at your palate's peril.

This small rare gem is found in a little store called Bird in Hand and in my opinion a must see for travelers passing through Chico.

Admission is free and if you come on a Saturday between 12pm and 2pm you can also receive free yo-yo lessons. Come in on the first Saturday in October you'll even find an even bigger treat; for this is the time of the annual National Yo-Yo Contest. There are nine regional contests held in the United States and Chico is one. In fact it is the last one: Chico, California is where the National Championships are held.

In the National Yo-Yo Museum you'll find the world's largest yo-yo weighing in at 256 pounds and a whopping 50 inches in height (pictured above). It is made of wood and is fashioned scaled up replica of Tom Kuhn 3 in 1 no Jive Yo-Yo. It was dubbed the world's largest in the 1982 Guinness Book of World Records.

There are ones larger, but they do not work as a Yo-Yo. In 1980 this yo-yo was picked up by a crane and held over the San Francisco Bridge. It has traveled the globe and has picked the National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico its home. This museum also has other artifacts big and small relating to the yo-yo and yo-yo's dating all the way back to the Jazz Age or better known as the 1920s. Need I say more? My wife and I enjoyed it.

National Yo-Yo Museum address and hours

The National Yo-Yo Museum
320 Broadway St.
Chico, California 95928

The National Yo-Yo Museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Sundays 12 to 5pm. Free admission.

Costa Rica is a charming country in Central America, with an abundance of natural beauty. One thing that should not be missed on your trip to Costa Rica is Tenorio Volcano National Park. The Park is remote and very tranquil and is a much visited area. To access the park a visitor must take a bus to Bujagua and then take a cab to the park entrance. This is a fun park for the vacationers looking for adventures and a very unique volcanic experience. A four to five hour hike on a loop trail is the best way to see this great park.

Rio Celeste or “Light Blue River” is literally blue because of the sulfur from the volcanoes and the calcium carbonate in the precipitation. You will see thermal springs along the area that is also dotted with geysers, rivers, waterfalls, lagoons and spectacular panoramic views.

It is a rare experience to see the Baird’s tapirs at night at the lagoon getting there fill of water. It is rare to see this endangered relative of the rhinoceros because the animal spend most of their lives hiding from their predators. You can also see Occelots and Jaguars at the water.

The Tenorio Volcano National Park is truly a “don’t miss” attraction when in Costa Rica.

This could be the year to take a meandering and sprawling trip across the many treasures of mainland Europe. Cruising can be a good way to do this and there’s plenty of variety out there, with 2013 cruises this summer taking in some of the continent’s finest sights and events.

June: Sample some traditional Dutch culture

It's not all windmills, red light districts, clogs and tulips in Holland. Get away from the normal tourist traps and experience a different side of the country at the Oerol Festival. This takes place on the island of Terschelling in June. A whole manner of buildings, from barns to sheds, are turned into makeshift venues. The island then comes alive with theatre, music and street performances for 10 days.

Rollmops are a typically Dutch dish. If you're not yet sold on the virtues of this pungent preserved fish, then head to Flag Day in Scheveningen, in June. This is where the best catch of herring is sold for the season with ceremonial grandeur. Other than eating fish, it's possible to check out people dressed in traditional attire, listen to bands and buy traditional handicrafts.

July: Festivals and fjords in Norway

In Norway in July, there's almost constant daylight close to the Arctic circle. There's pleasant temperatures in the low 20s, panoramic fjord views and lots of sleepy villages. The Hove Festival in July is an enormous rock festival that takes place on an island near Arendal in the south. This has played host to Faith No More and the Prodigy in the past.

Also in July is the largest foodie festival in Scandinavia called Ladmat. This attracts about a quarter of a million people each year. Here, there's a chance to get familiar with Scandinavian culinary practices.

Jazz fans should check out the Molde Jazz Festival, that has in the past featured Jamie Cullum and Herbie Hancock.

August: A good Riesling to visit Germany

August is when the grape-growing areas of Germany are at their most pleasant and productive. Head to the south towards the Wine Festival in Stuttgart, where the fruits of the Neckar wine region are celebrated by millions of wine connoisseurs. Regional specialities include Reisling, Kerner and Trollinger. Also not to be missed during late-August is the Rheingau Wine Festival in Frankfurt, where gourmet foods and top-class Rieslings from the Rheingau region tantalise the taste buds of eager visitors.

For a summer jaunt in Europe in 2013, cruises are the best way to see the rivers and tributaries of the old world, in slow-moving comfort and style, while taking in some of the continent’s best culture.

Nonetheless, you would not want to forego an opportunity to taste several of New York City's rightfully famous pizzas. Although there are stands where you can pick up a quick slice on almost every NYC street corner, below is some of the greatest pizza NYC has to offer, sent over by our friends at Hostelbookers.com.

Brooklyn

Grimaldi's Pizzeria

This pizza joint offers an exceptional coal oven pizza that is truly worth waiting. This explains the long queue of customers waiting to get in! Luckily, the line outside the shop moves faster than you would imagine, and the pizzas are served right away once you are seated inside. Don't miss to take a post-dinner walk down the bridge to experience the magnificent sight of Manhattan's skyline. Though Grimaldi's Pizzeria is certainly worth the visit on its own, it is a truly great prize after strolling across the Brooklyn Bridge plus a great choice nearby Pier 1 at the famous Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Grimaldi's, multiple locations, see the website at www.grimaldis.com

L&B Spumoni Gardens

Initially opened in late 1930s; L&B Spumoni Gardens is famous for its Sicilian pizza, spumoni, and ices. L&B Spumoni Gardens has a casual outdoor seating and a much more formal inside the dining room with a complete menu of traditional red-sauce Italian dishes. With lots of space for running around and many high-chairs available, the ambiance here is very family inviting. This Brooklyn pizzeria is famed with nearby residents, along with pizza lovers who don't even mind the subway ride.

L&B Spumoni Gardens, 2725 86th St Brooklyn, NY 11223

Di Fara's Pizza

Among the finest pizza in NYC, Di Fara's Pizza in Brooklyn provides both traditional and square pies, which is in addition to a list of classic Italian cuisines. One of the great aspects of eating pizza at Di Fara's is seeing Dom De Marco create each pie by bare hands. The toughest part is of course the waiting since you need to wait in quite a long line, and the pie is delivered piping hot, so you really need to wait even more once you get it.

Di Fara's Pizza,1424 Avenue J Brooklyn, NY 11230

Lower Manhattan

Lombardi's Pizzeria

Established in 1905, Lombardi's Pizzeria claims to be America's very first complete pizzeria. Checkered table covers as well as the black and white photos hanging on the decorated brick walls give an excellent backdrop for enjoying one of the finest coal oven pizzas in the city. Though all the pizzas at Lombardi's are delightful, the clam pizza with whole clams giving enough salty punch to the luscious pie is really a special treat.

Lombardi's Pizzeria, 32 Spring St New York, NY 10012

Queens

Nick's Pizza

Originally located in Forest Hills, Queens, Nick's Pizza also has an outlet on the Upper East Side that offers crisp and thin-crust pizza. Nick's Pizza, which is established in 1993, uses a gas-fired furnace to make their pizza. Nick's Pizza also offers delightful cannoli for dessert.

Nick's Pizza, 108-26 Ascan Ave Forest Hills, NY 11375

Coney Island

Totonno's Pizzeria

Totonno's Pizzeria has been creating excellent coal oven pies since 1924. An excellent dining stop if you are in Coney Island or New York Aquarium. Busiest during summer, you will find waiting times much shorter at Totonno's Pizzeria in the winter days. Although the Manhattan branches cannot match the the original in Coney Island atmosphere, you won't be disappointed with the brick oven cooked pizzas offered at any of Totonno's locations.

Totonno's Pizzeria, 1524 Neptune Avenue (between West 15th Street and West 16th Street), Brooklyn, NY 11224

Its original East Harlem outlet has been opened since early 1930s, and it still serves delicious pies from its coal oven to customers in historic East Harlem. Customers have the choice of either getting a quick slice of pie from the to-go counter in Patsy's, or sitting down to get pizza in the modest dining area with red-checkered table covers.

Motorino Pizzeria Napoletana

One of the newer pizzerias in New York, Motorino Pizzeria Napoletana serves exceptional Neapolitan-style pie at its branch in the East Village. The East Village branch is very famous, so you have to be ready to wait in line if you go there during peak hours.

The best pizzerias outside Naples are found in New York City, and if you're not going for a 'pizza pie' while visiting you've missed the best part!

A visit to England should include the coal fired paddle wheel steamer “Kingswear Castle” built in 1924. It was meant to serve the picturesque River Dart in Devon, and was built to be identical to her two sisters “Comton Castle” and “Totnes Castle”. This was the last paddle steamer built for service on the Dart. It replaced the previous Kingswear Castle and entered service in 1924.

At the end of the season in 1965 the steamer was withdrawn from service because of the heavy losses most steamer services were having when the traditional day at the seaside began to wane.

In 1967 the Kingwear Castle was purchased by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society.

Since 1985 the steamer has taken on a wide program of cruises on the River Medway and the River Thames and places like Whitstable, Southend, and London. These are all very different and more hectic than the cruises on the River Dart. If you want to “rub elbows” with the famous - HRH Prince Edward and Margaret Thatcher have been seen on these cruises.

The Kingswear Castle has won several awards including the National Steam Heritage Award and the Scania Transport Trust Award. The paddle steamer is included the core collection list of the National Historic Ships Committee also.

The sailing season for starts in early April and end in late October. The vessel is wheelchair accessible and can accept groups of 100. If taking a group, you can chose a 1-2 or 3 hour tour. The 3 hour tour offers a buffet of finger food as well as wine on board. Individual tickets for adults are about $45 US Dollars. The tour lasts from 11AM to 5PM on weekend. Educational tours can also be arranged. At the dock there is a facility where you can have a catered lunch if desired, buy souvenirs and post cards also.

Kingswear Castle location and bookings

The steamer has changed it location of operations several times over the past years. Currently the steamer is operating on the original River Dart and this is planned to remain its home. Do check the website for any changes, as well as bookings.

If you are traveling around the UK by train, and your journey includes visiting England’s second city of Birmingham, its worth looking into making Moor Street Station one of your stops.

A little gem of a building, it’s a good starting point for a trip, and it is possible to get a low-cost fare to and from London. The trip starts in Marylebone station, one of the smaller, more atmospheric stations in the city, which is somehow less crowded and frantic than the bigger stations. And ends at this station an alternative to using Birmingham New Street Station.

The journey can be a relaxing way to cover the miles. Obviously the train gives you time to relax and read or listen to music, which may not have been possible in a car.

The train whips along up through the middle of England, passing double-barreled named towns and villages.

Arriving at Moor Street it is worth pausing to take in the skylights, brickwork façade details, “twirly” bits of wrought iron and all the little details that the recent, award winning restoration, has brought back to the station, which hark back to the great romantic age of train travel and the age of steam. In fact on summer Sundays you may see some of the restored steam trains that run from the station out to Stratford-upon-Avon and other destinations.

From the station you emerge surrounded by the fresh, new buildings of Birmingham’s main shopping center. The whale-like, organic form of the Bull Ring shopping centre covered in thousands of aluminum discs - inspired by a Paco Rabanne sequined dress - is a striking sight.

The United States is a country of scenic vistas begging to be photographed. The Grand Canyon, majestic mountains and rugged coastlines bless amateur photographers with places to sharpen their skills. However, many amateur photographers wind up disappointed when their snapshots don’t do the place justice. This article will offer tips and tricks even beginner photographers can use to capture these natural landmarks’ beauty and majesty.

In the Desert: The Grand Canyon and Sedona, Arizona

At the Grand Canyon and other spots that get a lot of tourist traffic, it can be challenging to take shots that don’t look like you were at the zoo; a line of heads at the bottom and the main event at the top. While having a carefully framed human or two in your photos helps the eye find perspective and captures the canyon’s vastness, catching a tour bus full of people in your landscape looks bad.

The compulsion is to crop out errant passersby or to Photoshop them into oblivion; the better idea is to frame your pictures without people. To do this, you might need to get up early. Check out hotels near Grand Canyon to stay at so you can be the first one at the park when it opens. You’ll have the bonus of better light and nifty shadows, perfect for catching the reddish colors and definition in the strata of rock.

Deserts are a great spot for photos. The rock formations and colors there will have even the most casual photographers salivating as they reach for the camera. It’s hard to take a bad photo of Sedona, Ariz. (unless you leave the lens cap on), but here are some tips for getting better pictures when you head to the desert.

First, get out of town. The best way to find unexpected shots of anything is to drive around and look for them. The desert’s light is best in the early morning and late afternoon, with midday photos sometimes appearing washed out. Bring a polarizing filter, if your camera supports one. This makes sure the clouds and sky pop in your photos. Neutral density filters are well-used here too.

In the Mountains: Mount McKinley

As with the Grand Canyon, when photographing mountains like Mount McKinley (also called Denali) you want to balance your photos of huge things with macro images to give your portfolio a variety. When taking photos of mountains and other large subjects, embrace the feature’s smaller aspects. Focus on details, textures and patterns.

Remember the sun plays differently on the sides of the mountain at different times of day, so it’s worth revisiting the same vantage point at intervals and seeing how the shot has changed due to light.

If your goal is to shoot wildlife photos, bring a tripod, bug netting and repellent. Talk with park guides to help you find the best and safest locations.

At the Water: The Mississippi River and the Maine Coastline

When you want to capture water in a photo, think of the sky. Remember your digital camera’s sensors are set to measure everything in the picture - so if you’ve got dark water and a light sky, it’s going to create an average. This may result in a murky or washed-out image. Experiment with spot metering, your white balance settings and contrast adjustment to see what captures the mood you want best. There’s plenty of opportunity for moody, contrasty images, but you need to check weather reports first.

On either American coast, it’s a good idea to come prepared for wet weather. Umbrellas, cover-ups and waterproof bags for your camera equipment are essential. If you are not sure if you can take photos in the rain without getting your gear wet, don’t risk it.

Any time you photograph moving water, like when shooting Mississippi River traffic, you can have fun with your shutter speed to create misty or “soft” effects, giving a sense of timelessness to the photos. You’ll need a steady tripod for this kind of photo. Set a self-timer so when you hit the shutter button, your hand doesn’t cause any lingering vibrations that show up in the picture.

When in Bunol, Spain, don't miss out on La Tomatina festival. Not only is it the world's largest tomato fight, but the festivities begin a week ahead of time and last up until the tomatoes start flying. The festival is held annually and the fun lasts an entire week. The tomato throwing antics themselves are always on the last Wednesday of August every year.

The town comes alive that week with enormous parades, dazzling fireworks, tons of food, and energetic street parties. It is a celebration you won't soon forget because you can enjoy it all week long leading up to the actual tomato fight. You can sample all the wine and food you can digest. The night before La Tomatina the streets are literally filled with tomatoes.

Then over 20,000 people join the battle, hurling tomatoes at anything that moves. The streets are covered in tomato sauce by the end of the day, and so are all the participants.

Keep in mind, if you plan on spectating, or participating, you will want to wear clothes you can throw away because they will be ruined by the end of the festival. There is virtually no way of avoiding getting messy. Also, don't forget to arrive a week early so you can watch a few parades, and attend the street parties because these events are also a lot of fun.

It also has a custom musical score and the “Hollywood Dreams” dance song which was composed by Ian Habgood.

On your next trip to Singapore make sure you take in the usual tourist attraction but don’t forget to save time to spend at Singapore’s Universal Studios.

Wintertime is finally on the wane but the mountain resorts of Europe tell a different story. In the age of snow-making machines, modern ski resorts can keep the snows coming for longer, not to mention the ever-reliable powder in the higher climes of Val Thorens and Kuhtai, Austria.

Better value and quieter slopes in the late season renders those spring deals more enticing by the year for the savvy skier. But where are the best places to head for your last-minute continental ski breaks?

Austria has some of the most reliable resorts for snowfall, as well as undeniable Alpine charm no matter where you land. The resort of Lech is particularly well-favoured in its snow record, with the added bonuses of the Arlberg ski area on the doorstep, excellent off-piste terrain and a picturesque riverside setting. Further towards Salzburg, Ellmau is a good compromise if you're travelling with a family, as its ski schools offer high quality tuition, while access to the expansive Ski Welt area is there for more experienced skiers.

Look for late season opportunities in France and you'll probably come up with Val Thorens as a pretty safe bet. It may not be as cheap as other ski villages, but this is the time of year to go if you want to experience the upmarket ambience and high-class catering at more affordable rates. It also happens to be over 2000 metres in altitude, making it the highest resort in Europe and lending it one of the longest ski seasons as well. Elsewhere, Tignes makes a good alternative for the spring, where the presence of a glacier keeps the lifts running until May most years.

It's a good idea to head to more northerly countries to get the best skiing out of the coming months and Sweden boasts some of the greatest variety, as well as cold weather guaranteed for longer. Åre is the top choice here, with facilities to rival the more famous resorts of Switzerland and dramatic peaks like Mount Åreskutan challenging the Alps for scenic quality. If you're feeling brave, Riksgränsen lies beyond the Arctic Circle in Sweden, offering the chance to ski with the midnight sun, in the long days and light nights of early summer.

As a rule, the further north or the higher up you travel, the better your chances at a really satisfying spring ski trip. The snows vary year to year, so it's best to keep one eye on the conditions as well as the prices before you select your destination. Watch out when you're packing supplies as well; the late season brings the boon of sunny days on south-facing runs so don't forget your suncream as well as your cold-weather gear.

While Easter may be approaching fast, one thing's for certain: the European ski season is not over yet.

In the first half of the last century the California coast from San Diego to Santa Cruz was dotted with amusement parks filled with glittering rides, the aroma of freshly made cotton candy and dazzling games of chance. Today there are few examples left of these palaces of fun. One of the last remaining examples of these nostalgic wonderlands can be found in beautiful Santa Monica. Pacific Park, located on the Santa Monica Pier is also the last pier amusement park operating in California.

Pacific Park has 12 incredible rides including thw world's only solar powered ferris wheel. The West Coaster is a mild rollercoaster that encircles the pier and offers great views of the surrounding coast. It's a great ride for families. The Pacific Plunge lifts riders 150 feet above the bay before plummeting them to the pier below. There are many rides excellent for children including Inkie's Wave Jumper, Sea Planes, Crazy Submarine and Frog Hopper, a drop tower like the Pacific Plunge, but designed for the little ones.

There's an arcade and numerous games of chance, perfect for those on a date who want to win that special someone something. When you're hungry, the park offers a large food court with places such as Taco Bell, Pizza Hut Express and the Harbor Grill. Outside of the park on the pier, and within walking distance of the pier there are many other options for great food including some sit down restaraunts. Pacific Park is fun during the day, but for a truly magical experience, visit during the evening when thousands of lights bring the park to life.

All in all, Pacific Park is a great place to visit for all ages. Nothing can beat the nostalgia of an old fashioned amusement park on a pier, so don't miss this historical gem.
