Instructions For Ubuntu Users:

A special plugin and a midi software ‘renderer’ is required for playing embedded midi file types from within the browser.

Installation
Open up a terminal, type the command below and then press enter.

sudo apt-get install timidity mozplugger

Answer yes to all questions and the installation will be complete.

Restart firefox (don’t forget to close all instances) and embedded midi files should now play when you go to this sample webpage below.

Additional tips you may require in the process:

1. Sometimes you may need to delete /home/[USERNAME]/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat and restart firefox. This is because a bug require mozplugger to be the last plugin loaded .

2. The mozilla folder is in your Home folder, but you cannot see it until you turn on ’show hidden files’ (Ctrl+H) in the ‘view’ menu.

3. Mostly the default Evince (http://projects.gnome.org/evince/) PDF document viewer will have no problem with reading PDF files. But this plugin doesn’t cooperate very nice with Acrobat Reader in firefox, but using xpdf in firefox solves this problem. If pdf’s are not displaying anymore in your browser follow the instructions below:

Type:

sudo apt-get install xpdf

Then:

sudo gedit /etc/mozpluggerrc

Put an # before the line with acroread in it, as shown below:

#      repeat swallow(documentShell) fill: acroread -geometry +9000+9000 +useFrontEndProgram "$file"
        repeat noisy swallow(Xpdf) fill: xpdf -g +9000+9000 "$file"

Instructions For Windows Users:

Quicktime is useful for playing embedded midi file types from within the browser in windows.

Clicking the “Install missing plugins” button in firefox brings up Apple QuickTime, which you mostly have installed in windows. But it still does not work.

Actually the music file being loaded from the web site is formatted as a “.mid” MIDI file. The MIDI player that should work in Firefox is QuickTime, and QuickTime is mostly being correctly identified. However, by default, QuickTime is not configured to play MIDI files.

So, we have to configure QuickTime to play MIDI (.mid) music files ourselves.

Before we start configuring QuickTime, you need to make sure you have QuickTime installed correctly.

If you do not have QuickTime installed, you need to install it (even if you already have it, you can download and install over the latest version).

You can go directly to Apple’s site, where you will find the option to download the combination package of QuickTime and iTunes.
Or you can download only the QuickTime program (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ ).

1. Download and Install
2. Start the QuickTime Player
3. And we see the Untitled (no music or video file loaded) player appear
4. From the menu, pick Edit / Preferences / QuickTime Preferences…
5. Select the Browser tab and click on Mime Settings
6. Click on the “+” box to expand the “Audio – Audio only file formats” listing
7. Check the box beside MIDI and then click OK and close QuickTime.

Now, Firefox will play the file .mid automatically.

Wow!! one more major cause to celebrate or to be proud as an INDIAN, what!?…. India Found Water. Yes you read it right, India found water on the MOON. Chandrayaan-1, India’s first mission to Moon, by our very own ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) found trace of water in the surface of the Moon. As an Indian we must be proud, that too, in the 1st mission to Moon and  1/16 (almost) budget compared to NASA our guys in ISRO made it happen.

Chandrayaan-1 was launched by ISRO in October 2008, and operated until August 2009. On 14 November 2008 India became the fourth country in the world to place its flag on the Moon, on August 29, 2009 ISRO officially declared the mission over. In this 312 days historical journey Chandrayaan-1 had completed 95% of its primary objectives including placing the INDIAN FLAG on the MOON.
With the collected data by Chandrayan-1 and other two space vehicle, the scientists found small amounts of water present in particles that make up the moon’s soil. In this regard Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington said -”Water ice on the moon has been something of a holy grail for lunar scientists for a very long time,” he also said- “This surprising finding has come about through the ingenuity, perseverance and international cooperation between NASA and the India Space Research Organization.”

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has selected ISRO’s Chandrayaan-1 mission as one of the recipient’s of its annual, AIAA SPACE 2009, awards, which recognize key contributions to space science and technology. M. Annadurai was the project director, of Chandrayaan-1.

Anyways as a graphic designer I don’t know anything much about Space Science but I’m feeling very proud of ISRO as an Indian. But we want a better website for ISRO.org with a professional look, user friendly interface, more interactive, more easy to understand & interesting section for laymen & kids.

All these happened just after I  installed Dropbox in my UBUNTU Pc with the downloadable linux .deb file.

mentioned there didn’t work ….

I was really frustrated after clicking it a couple of times and got a bizarre instruction here. So after reading the post I too did the same and Yahoooooo… (Nope, I did find the post with Google ) It did work!

In Short What I did:

1. Right clicked on the networking icon in the top notification area and disabled networking.
2. Clicked this link in my PC again – Applications> Internet> Dropbox
3. The setup dialog did show up!
4. Right clicked on the networking icon in the top notification area and enabled networking.
5. The setup took 4-5 secs to detect the Internet connection.
6. Now I continued with the connection configuration as instructed.
7. Got my dropbox in UBUNTU pc!
8. The total process took just 5 mins.

Hope this funny hack helps someone too.

It seems that the guys at Yahoo are updating their servers and they are using a new authentication system.

Temporary Solution:
As a workaround until Pidgin is updated you can add cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com in the Pager Server field. To get to this field, in Pidgin, click on Accounts, then on your Yahoo account, next on the Modify button and last on the Advanced tab of the window that just opened.

Permanent Solution for Jaunty:

Or you can update to pidgin 2.5.8 to solve this problem.

Note: Please dont use “username@yahoo.com” or “username@yahoo.co.in” in your Yahoo account’s username field. Use only your  “username“. Right now only removing the “@yahoo.com” works. Otherwise you may encounter an error like:

“Unknown error number 1013. Logging into the Yahoo! website may fix this.”

Anyways, after roaming around the IPL site and with abandon time in hand, I move to my favorite (unfortunately) & local IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders official website. Found SRK is waiting with burning helmet in hand to welcome me, fine! I proceed clicking the ‘Intro’ tab & it lands me to SRKs den, to take my loyal oath about KKR and pushed me inside to the main page half burnt . Its a cool site inside with a perfect essence of the Team KKR and brand SRK, Gold and black all over the site made it glamorous as SRK, other stuffs I liked there are HOO-GLEE, Fans Pick, Blog & Fan Zone.

After KKR Site I go on checking other IPL team’s official website to find who did what and found the website of Mumbai Indians the most simple & convenient for Indian viewer. Its clean & simple content creation fascinated me the most. So I made my very own rank list for all the official IPL20 sites and here they are…
