Twitter is not merely status updates! Twitter is a venue where you can market your brand or yourself in way to captivate and socially interact with your followers. Twitter, in essence, is about creating online relationships with your followers.

I like the self-policing idea, but in a way I admire Endgadget for just saying "to hell with it." I might do the same in their position. There's only so much idiocy on the Internet I can take before I can't be arsed at all anymore.

Very informative text. I've found your site via Google and I'm really glad about the information you provide in your articles. Btw your sites layout is really messed up on the Chrome browser. Would be really great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!

I think that is an interesting point, it made me think a bit. Thanks for sparking my thinking cap. Sometimes I get so much in a rut that I just feel like a record.

Jason - strange how that happens. I mean, I tend to think that most trolls are just teenagers... after all, I remember being 15 or so and being a total ass playing Diablo. But then I grew out of that, and the fun of harassing hapless people online just didn't do it for me. I do think every site with comments/forums needs a dedicated moderation force. If you clearly define what makes for valid conversation in a FAQ or terms of use, you can moderate comments without too much fear of backlash.

I'm getting weary at the level of "conversation" I find on many websites. Take SFGate, the San Francisco Chronicle's website. It's home to one of the most idiotic and venomous groups of commenters on the Internet. A great deal of any given article's or blog's comments rarely have anything to do with the article in question or are hateful spews of moronitude. How bad is it? One of their commenters regularly tells us what he had for breakfast instead of saying something that's germane to the article in question. I frequently e-mail requests to the SFGate to do something about this -- I'd enjoy engaging on some actual interesting, thoughtful discussion of Bay Area–related issues.

Agreed. Particularly if you have a trustworthy community, I don't think it's too hard to get the masses to police themselves. Though I hate the word "police"... anyway, 99% of people (very scientific number, yes) would be happy to get rid of trolls, so just by giving them the ability to somehow moderate comments or to hide offensive remarks with negative feedback, you can control that stuff without fueling the fire. If trolls constantly have their posts removed/hidden, they'll get bored.

YOU ARE A JERK!

I think it probably is a smart move by Endgadget especially if they also go through all their comments and ban hammer morons. I would like to see more blogs follow suit, rather than just ignoring (and not approving) hateful comments, ban people. We wouldn't accept it in a public space so why should we online.
