I used to have my VHS’s and DVD’s mixed together in my video library. Just a few weeks ago I finally made the painful transition to boxing up my VHS tapes for deep storage and leaving only my DVD’s out on the shelves.

It wasn’t easy. Most of my favorite movies I own are on VHS. All the classics. Their boxes have creases and stickers and quirks that I have grown to appreciate over the years, unlike my DVD’s which pretty much have pristine and unblemished uniform-sized clamshells encasing them.

I found myself having to focus on the negatives of VHS in order to make the task easier. So it was fun to see you mention the very same things I had to remind myself of, right here on your blog.

I came across my VHS copy of Full Eclipse, which upon only my second viewing I discovered had suffered from extremely accelerated deterioration, and was no longer watchable. Still I haven’t gotten rid of it.

I came across the VHS copy of Evil Dead that for reasons unknown came unspooled in my VCR, becoming completely ruined, and almost taking my VCR with it. I won’t ever play it again, for fear it might do the same thing all over again, but I haven’t gotten rid of it yet.

I also had to fight the collector bug, which screamed in my ear to go out and buy DVD versions of each of my favorite VHS tapes so I could have them out on my shelves again, even though I can’t afford to do that.

So thanks for reminding me of all the bad things about VHS, it really is helping me recover from that traumatic experience!

Oh, and then there’s that time my VCR totally tried to eat my copy of Terror in the Aisles which would have killed me since that one is out of print in all formats and I love that little movie so, so much. My Boogeymen DVD is just not the same when it comes to movies with a bunch of clips from horror films.

i do the exact same thing at night… we put on a dvd (usually a commentary track) when we go to bed, and usually make it about 2 minutes in before we’re sound asleep. our tv has a ‘sleep’ function on it that turns off the dvd player/tv after 90 minutes… you might want to see if yours has one as well, although it sounds like your vcr is accomplishing basically the same thing.

You’re right about all the drawbacks of VHS, but I still love mine (I still have an embarrassingly extensive collection). For me, there is one major perk. You see, I like to hit the rack with a movie playing in the background (usually a Universal Monster film or something from one of my Mill Creek box sets). Often times, I fall asleep about 10 seconds after the opening credits roll. My old DVD/VCR will automatically rewind the VHS tape and then turn itself off if I fall asleep before it ends. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve woken up at 3 am to some awful soundtrack because my DVD player just goes back to the main menu.

But being a special features junkie, I have to agree with you. I won’t even entertain purchasing a disc without at least one commentary track, making-of featurette or a theatrical trailer. Sidestory: a couple months ago I decided to watch my 25th anniversary VHS of Jaws (still don’t have that one on DVD) and was pleasantly surprised to have the video start with a 20 minute making-of documentary and then the theatrical trailer.

Also agree with AbbyNormal, especially the freakin’ 20 minutes worth of trailers for every other movie that studio has made in the last six months. Grrrrrrrrr!

Great article! I still miss VHS though. DVD is great, but it has its little (very little in comparison to VHS or beta-max.) flaws too. I think the biggest is not being able to fast forward until you get to the actual movie. I hate having to sit through a million stupid little menus, which 9 times out of 10 they will not allow you to skip through, not to mention the various FBI warnings, previews and commercials before I can even get to the main menu and select play movie.

Now granted I love DVD too, nothing can beat having your favorite movie with hours of special features to enjoy, but sometimes I get nostalgic for the old times when I used to spend hours at the video store my best friend worked at.

i do not think you are a troll. :) this wasn’t my list, but i made some suggestions on the films covered, and the fact that CEMETERY MAN (aka DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE) somehow slipped through the cracks is a travesty.

i also agree that our site is very US-centric. our idea for the site was to focus mostly on the films we grew up with, which were the american slasher films of the 1980s. however, i think we often branch out beyond that, frequently writing about other horror subgenres and foreign films. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, MARTYRS, and THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE leap to mind as films i’ve written about recently, and looking back at our list of 10 most disturbing horror films ever made, i see that six and a half of the ten films are foreign. that said, i believe your point is still well taken, and we’ll see what we can do about ‘thinking outside the box.’ as long as i don’t have to watch THE BOX again.

MJW, not at all! I appreciated your comments very much. If anything, I feel silly for not putting ‘Dellamorte Dellamore’ on the list. I think The Host is a terrific movie. In some ways, it’s an old-fashioned monster flick, with some absurdist tendencies, but it also has something serious to say about US-Korean relations. I hope you like it!

I stand corrected, you listed some marvellous films — ‘Let the Right One In’ and ‘Martyrs’ in particular are both *very* special movies indeed. Not seen The Host (I’m assuming you’re referring to the South Korean monster flick) but I’ll put it on my list of future watches.

MJW, thanks for reading the post. ‘Dellamorte Dellamore’ is a terrific film, and it’s true that it probably should have been included in the list for the reasons you mention. Also, I do hope the posts at Eo2L don’t come across as narrowly American or overly provincial. Truthfully, most of my favorite horror films of recent years were made outside of the US — The Host, Martyrs, Let the Right One In, Frontier(s), Wolf Creek, High Tension, Them, 28 Days Later, and Wilderness, just to name a few.

Great posters. Been to Poland twice and it is amazing. Culturally rich, and beautiful. Even their graffiti is cool looking.

Incidentally, it’s a shame that there is currently so much hatred for the Poles in the UK, especially considering most of the Polish put the average ‘Daily Mail’ or ‘The Sun’-reading Brit to shame…

You missed ‘Dellamorte Dellamore’ which has two “zombie romances”, both of which are funnier, more stylish and more touching than any of the ones you listed above.

No offence, but in my opinion, the viewing habits on this site are far too ‘America-centric’. You could do with thinking outside the box a bit (or outside your own country!).

Totally agree about The Box. It seemed to advertise itself as a conventional thriller which is what I expected. Maybe I’m a rube for not appreciating it for NOT being a conventional thriller, but I just didn’t get all the nonsense about water portals and whatnot. I wrote it off as simply not my bag.

I also agree that Never Sleep again is a far superior doc than His Name Was Jason. It had a few informative bits, but I didn’t feel like it really delved into the Friday series as well as Never Sleep did with the Elm Street series.

haha, no — i had full control over what went up for sale and what i kept. for those that weren’t obvious (e.g., i had multiple copies of a film), my rule of thumb was to ask myself “will i ever watch this again, or am i keeping it simply to look cool on the shelf?” if the answer was “no, i will never watch this again”… it went up on amazon.

yes, every code is unique and can only be used once — so it would only work for the first person to type it in (which probably happened shortly after i put this post up). GameStop seems to be giving you an instance of the code at the store and, in some cases, also emailing you a separate one — so if anyone else receives an extra one, feel free to post it here to share the love.

I have family residing in Core (just outside of Morgantown) and having visited there my whole life, I’m surprised there aren’t MORE horror films set there! Beautiful nature, but weird place.

It is pretty sick but worth a watch for the sheer beauty of the film on a technical level. Cerda is a gifted filmmaker visually, and the follow up to Aftermath, Genesis, is striking and poignant as well as very different from Aftermath.
