The August Underground series is a definite must-have for this type of fan. Just got Guinea Pig 2 the other day & am waiting for some time when the wife is gone to watch it. Salo is pretty disturbing for the sexual stories and scenes (oh, and the shit.....). I'd have to add Murder Collection Vol. 1 from the guys over at ToeTag (August Underground fame) and Irreversible (not a lot of violence and the cinematography is really rough to sit through, but it's pretty crazy). A Serbian Film is one of my faves! The cinematography sort of makes me think of the mind of David Lynch mixed with the mind of David Park Ray (google him if you don't know the story). Intense. Just ordered Maskhead from ToeTag a few days ago. We'll see how that one turns out.

I feel that VHS and DVD are both crucial! I have stuff on each format that doesn't exist on the other. I absolutely miss the old mom-and-pop video stores, I'd have a field day going in to a store like that when I was younger and I certainly would in this day and age as well. Seriously though, where can I buy that coffee mug that says, "I still watch my movies on VHS"?

Well written, Corey. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I'm glad to hear the most recent "The Thing" prequel turned out to be watchable. I had my own fears and suspicions they would make it a teeny-bopper thriller instead of a real horror movie like Carpenter's lovable masterpiece. I was pre-sold on the remake because it starred The Kurt, Master Of All Things That Are Badass. Luckily, the movie also kicks total ass, despite the original bitching done by the critics.

I've heard good things about American Haunting. I don't watch television but I'll look forward to when it becomes available commercial free. I love a good ghost story.

"The Walken Dead" is awesome. I saw that on G+ the other day and enjoyed it immensely. I don't know what it is about that guy's manner of speaking but I dig well done impersonations as well as the man, himself. Walken + zombies is a win.

Talking about the AMC antics regarding their new zombie series makes me a little nauseous. Big studios rarely make anything better. On the other hand, they make lots of stuff much worse. Where's the plus side?

Thanks again. Keep up the great work on the blog.

One of the scenes that sticks out in my mind is from the movie House at the beginning when the delivery boy finds the old lady hanging in the upstairs room. That scared the crap out of me I had to cover my eyes every time that part came on. I was only like 5 or 6 and for some reason the rest of the movie didn't scare me as much as that part. I was 4 the first time I saw it in the theater, but can't remember that part of it until I watched it later on VHS. Maybe it scared me so bad that I blocked it from my memory. Yeah my Mom was cool and would take me to see all the great horror movies, I think that is one of the main reasons I'm a horror fanatic! I have been watching them my whole life!!!

One more note the thing that scared me the most of all ever was the Michael Jackson video for Thriller something else I saw when I was 4 and was terrified! Now zombies are my favorite!

Boy you said it about Yellow Brick Road. The poster IS completely misleading. The movie had some eerie ideas: ghostly neuro-music, shocking(if implausible) first death scene.

But what was with the movie references to the OZ film? ANd the crummy CGI at the end? Sheesh! What a waste...
I WILL check out Forget Me Not on your rec though. I've run across it on Netflix but was wary of turkey-itis since I'd never heard of it before.

I am only 29, but I am a huge fan of The Toolbox Murders (1978). Cameron Mtchell has been around since the beginning of explotative films. He starred in one of the first truly violent slasher films, a gem called Blood and Black Lace. He was the perfect candidate to cast in The Toolbox Murders, and this so-called "remake" is a disgrace to his performance. Nothing is sacred in Hollywood, and it makes me avoid going to the theater. I prefer the enjoyment of spending a couple of bucks at the video store and bringing home some honestly original entertainment.

I agree on blair witch project, while it kicked ass in theaters, it would just seem goofy if i saw it a second time. same thing with paranormal activity, i would never watch that again, there would be no suspense.
dawn of the dead is slow, and scream i watched way too many times back in the day and i get annoyed even looking at it now.

I wasn't alluding to the remake (which I also think is pretty good, especially for a Zack Snyder movie), but the multiple cuts that are available of the original Romero movie. There's the original US theatrical cut (which most people know), a longer extended edition, and a shorter European theatrical cut made by Dario Argento. They all feature varying ratios of awesome to boring.

I believe Jon (the guy who posted the article) was referring to the 1978 Romero classic. I'm only aware of two versions: the original and the 2004 remake, both of which are brilliant examples of zombie movies. I'm getting ready to watch the original again to get fresh perspective.

I have great associations with the remake because of the circumstances under which I saw it (hanging out with childhood friends after not seeing them for about 5 years). Getting together with friends you've known for 25 years to see a great zombie horror movie; good stuff.

One of my favorite re-watchable zombie flicks is Return of the Living Dead (the original, of course). That movie cracks me up and I never get tired of it. Seeing Linnea Quigley naked doesn't hurt either. :)

Which cut of Dawn of the Dead are we talking about here? Because some are certainly more boring than others.

That's a great list. I totally enjoyed the images and your descriptions. Well done.

I'm particularly fond of the Frazetta (being a male, I have no choice. Death Dealer is ultra-badass), the Sonic Youth evil post-industrial scarecrow, and the Sabbath. Sabbath's cover is cool because it feels like presumed menace. Good stuff.

Thanks for the imaginative post.
