I liked your writeup on The Thing. LIke Patrick, I was skeptical about seeing this remake, because I only heard bad things about it, but maybe it was because most people went in thinking that they were gonna re-live the awesomeness that the '82 version brought us. But now I think I may give it a chance because I would like to know what happened before the story in the '82 version.
I did notice that they did integrate some animatronics into this version, which I appreciate, because I consider the animatronics in the original movie a real breakthrough for it's time.

I like that.. A VHS recovery group.
I understand the nostalgia factor. I also remember when DVD was about to be introduced & thinking it's about time for an upgrade. VHS quality was never good, even in its heyday. What I can't stand is reading articles people post about DVD sucking and VHS being superior. I've seen VHS nuts call DVD words like"charmless", "cynical", "clinical". One article claiming "we" have been "brainwashed" into liking DVD or Blu~Ray.

That is simply nostalgia taken too far when you see a new & by every account superior format and feel it threatening

Comment on The Most Disturbing Horror Films Ever Made – Part I by Natja K.

I guess it's up to each individual as to what is disturbing and what isn't. And "being jaded" is always morphing it's self into becoming more jaded. it's an ongoing process. I remember when I saw Brian De Palma's Sisters in 1973 when I was only 12 years old I was absolutely horrified. It haunted me for weeks. Same with The Exorcist. Now days those films seem extremely tame after all these years. But it's because the public has been so saturated with so much gore, violence, brutality, and disturbing things that it takes a lot more to horrify even children now days. But if you were to take someone back in 1932, freeze them, the bring them back to life and then show them The Exorcist, they'd probably die right there of sheer shock. When Tod Browning's Dracula premiered it mortified people. Watch it now and it literally puts some people to sleep. Sure the list this author presents seems pretty tame to most of us, but there was a time in all of our lives when many of this films would truly disturb us. So it depends on what films disturbed you the most in your life and how much that it bothered you no matter when that was. In my lifetime the list of films that truly scarred me emotionally and haunted me for at least days or even weeks are listed below with the year I saw the film rather than the date of release, which most of us already know or can easily find out

De Palma's Sisters(1973). I was horrified for days after I saw it, and it just left me in a total state of shock for days

The Exorcist(1973) I thought I was possessed for months after I saw this movie. it mortified me beyond belief

Andy Warhol's Frankenstein(1978) (X rated at the time I saw it) Also known as Flesh for Frankenstein. I was 17 when I saw this and though by todays standards the gore and shocks are almost laughable it did manage to freak me out. However I did see it in 3D, so that might have made a big difference

Cannibal Holocaust(2004) This movie disturbed me so much that even though I did not see it until 2004 many years after it's initial release it managed to truly haunt me. The music is very dooming, sad and makes one think of depravity and death. The gore looks very real at times, and the animal killings are most disturbing thing about it. For some reason it really bothers you.

Cannibal(dir. Marian Dora)(2012)
This film based on the true story of a man who ate his lover has not the best production values, but what it lacks in that it more than makes up for with some of the most horrific gore ever put on film. It's brutal and very unsettling. And it disturbed me a great deal. I was freaked out for days after I saw it

The Butcher(Korea)2011
Low budget snuff wannabe starts out downright annoying, but it's so sick and twisted later on without being too graphic that it left my jaw hanging open. I actually wrote Netflix and asked them to pull it, feeling that it simply went too far.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1976)
Who wasn't horrified by this who saw it in the 70's. It really freaked me out

Well I can go on and on, but you get the picture. This was long enough as it was. But despite all of this I must mention that the most disturbing thing I have ever seen was recently. A real video of two men being brutally murdered by a Mexican drug cartel. It's done outdoors in daylight and the video is near HD quality. And let me tell you this is so horrifying and so disturbing that I feel that maybe it's not even a good idea to mention it at all. And unless you are extremely jaded I beg you not to seek it out. It's out there on the net, but please don't, It may likely scar you for life

I guess it’s up to each individual as to what is disturbing and what isn’t. And “being jaded” is always morphing it’s self into becoming more jaded. it’s an ongoing process. I remember when I saw Brian De Palma’s Sisters in 1973 when I was only 12 years old I was absolutely horrified. It haunted me for weeks. Same with The Exorcist. Now days those films seem extremely tame after all these years. But it’s because the public has been so saturated with so much gore, violence, brutality, and disturbing things that it takes a lot more to horrify even children now days. But if you were to take someone back in 1932, freeze them, the bring them back to life and then show them The Exorcist, they’d probably die right there of sheer shock. When Tod Browning’s Dracula premiered it mortified people.

De Palma’s Sisters(1973). I was horrified for days after I saw it, and it just left me in a total state of shock for days

The Exorcist(1973) I thought I was possessed for months after I saw this movie. it mortified me beyond belief

Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein(1978) (X rated at the time I saw it) Also known as Flesh for Frankenstein. I was 17 when I saw this and though by todays standards the gore and shocks are almost laughable it did manage to freak me out. However I did see it in 3D, so that might have made a big difference

Cannibal Holocaust(2004) This movie disturbed me so much that even though I did not see it until 2004 many years after it’s initial release it managed to truly haunt me.

It’s brutal and very unsettling. And it disturbed me a great deal. I was freaked out for days after I saw it

The Butcher(Korea)2011
Low budget snuff wannabe starts out downright annoying, but it’s so sick and twisted later on without being too graphic that it left my jaw hanging open. I actually wrote Netflix and asked them to pull it, feeling that it simply went too far.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1976)
Who wasn’t horrified by this who saw it in the 70’s. It really freaked me out

Well I can go on and on, but you get the picture. This was long enough as it was. But despite all of this I must mention that the most disturbing thing I have ever seen was recently. A real video of two men being brutally murdered by a Mexican drug cartel. The first one has his head cut off with a chainsaw then the other is slowly killed by having his head cut off with a hunting knife. It’s done outdoors in daylight and the video is near HD quality. And let me tell you this is so horrifying and so disturbing that I feel that maybe it’s not even a good idea to mention it at all. And unless you are extremely jaded I beg you not to seek it out. It’s out there on the net, but please don’t, It may likely scar you for life

I find that I can read subtitles faster than I can understand spoken dialogue. And dubbing looks ridiculous. The only irritant is when subtitles are done so poorly that they are indistinct from the background.

BTW, Some and See (Idi i smotri) is a subtitled war movie that's as disturbing as Saving Private Ryan. And an American movie for the list: Session 9.

I believe the movie your referencing is possibly Cannibal Holocaust. The director and producer had the actors sign contracts of silence and made them disappear for 12mths to add realism to the movie. Of course they had to " bring the actors to life" when the court system put them on trial for acessories to murder... :)

Augusts Underground Mordum is so fake, not to mention boooring! It tries way too hard to seem realistic with outlandishly amateurish camera angles and poor acting all done on purpose in an attempt to make it look authentic and real life, which is certainly is not.
If it was real it would have been more graphic, much more interesting, and the "actors'" emoting would have churned your guts. That was not real.

Well Seed is definitely one on my watchlist now also cannibal. I agree with the other posters that a serbian film should be on here as that is my all time fave. I also agree with mordum , martyrs, irreversible and inside. There are two titles i am surprised not to see in this list. The first is a movie which i dont often find in these lists and it is called stoic. Its based on a true story and I felt very uncomfortable watching this film the other movie is called Melancholie der engel. All i will say about this movie is look it up before you watch it.

When I am watching a seriously disturbing film I get the eerie, tingly feeling that I shouldnt be watching this and some type of brute squad is going to break down my door and haul me off. I dont go for this type of genre, but every now and again my Horror friends persuade me to watch one. Mum AND Dad gets a thumbs up from me, well done. INSIDE was Super disturbing and done well too. I think the French have a handle on super disturbing films. I will stick to Indie Horror and Zombie films for most of my viewing pleasure. Hear that brute squad????

The Blair Witch Project scared the crap out of me in the theatre and it does it still. The soundtrack with those rock clicking together is Awesome.

I was fortunate to grow up on all the good stuff on the Big Screen Yes I saw movies like Phantasm and Dawn Of The Dead and Rabid at the drive in movies on date night:) My two fave slashers are Micheal Myers and Jason Vorhees in that order. I do have a soft spot for Slumber Party Massacre and the original Black Christmas. Micheal is my fave mostly because the original has the lighting perfect. Jason scares the crap outta me, he is relentless, your gonna die if he is after you. When he invades my dreams I know I AM toast:) I watched the original Friday the 13th in the cinema with my Best Friend, she hid her eyes when Jason came up out of the water and I screamed and dumped my box of candy all over her. heh heh good times!!!

I was reluctant to answer this because I am not a huge slasher fan. My favorite is "Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon" partly because half of it is not a slasher at all. ^^; I love that it tries to explain other slasher movies, I love the fun of Leslie's personality and the silly "in-jokes" that he makes, and I love the little love story that eventually turns sour. Hell, I even love the use of The Talking Heads over the credits. All around, this is my favorite because it puts a very human, likeable face on the monster... and he still kills everyone anyway.

I am in no way advocating that anyone should subjecting themselves to viewing this abomination but, with all do respect, you should add " August Underground Mordum " to the list if you haven't already! For me, it made "Aftermath" look like "Child's Play"!
