Have you ever seen pictures of a mountain like structure with red, glowing liquid coming out of it? If you have, you have seen a volcano erupting. A volcano erupts when the magma chamber under it is filled to the top and cannot hold anymore. When this happens, magma will flow up the vent and out of the top. When the magma is flowing out or down a volcano it is called lava. This lava can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degree Fahrenheit. Volcanic eruptions are not always explosive. Some volcanoes, called shield volcanoes, do not exploded. Rather when they erupt the lava spills out of the top and runs down the sides. Other volcanoes, called Calderas, are the most explosive. When these volcanoes erupt, lava and debris fly everywhere. These volcanoes can kill thousands of people. Caldera volcanoes take a very long time for their magma chambers to fill. Yellow Stone National Park in the United States is a caldera volcano. The last time Yellowstone erupted was about 640,000 years ago. Yellowstone will erupt again but not anytime in the near future.
This beach is called Robert Moses. It is a beach on Long Island.

One of my favorite places to go during the summer is the beach. I love relaxing on the sand, reading a book and listening to the waves. At the beach there are waves crashing on the shore. They're sometimes big, tall waves or small, short waves. Also at the beach, there are people who are tanning. To tan, they bring their towels and suntan lotion so they do not burn their skin. People at the beach are always trying to keep their food away from seagulls. Seagulls love to fly down and pick up food when no one is watching. Sometimes the beach can get very crowded and there may not be a lot of space to put a towel and an umbrella. I like to go to the beach in the morning when it is not hot yet and there are few people. I am very excited for summer to start so I can go to the beach.
4. Shore (noun): the edge of the beach that is against the body of water

I will be going to a New York Islanders game with my friend. The Islanders are a hockey team from Long Island. At the hockey game, I will sit in section 211 in the arena. When I get to the arena, I'm going to get cotton candy, a hot dog, and a drink for lunch. My friend and I will cheer on the Islanders to win the game. When the Islanders score a goal, we are going to cheer and scream with happiness. During the game, we will sing along to the songs played to excite the crowd. To get home from the arena, we are going to use the train. I am very excited to cheer on my team.

When I was in college at SUNY Cortland in Central Upstate New York, I used to go to a town called Ithaca, NY almost every weekend I had available. Ithaca is known for their beautiful waterfalls and gorges. You can hike on trails right next to these waterfalls and gorges. My friends and I would hike these trails and be amazed by how beautiful nature is. My favorite waterfall to hike is called Buttermilk Falls. It has clear, sparkling water cascading down layers of rock composed of shale and limestone. There is one point on the trail where hikers can see a rock structure called the Pinnacle Rock. This rock structure had been eroded and shaped by the running water and weather over thousands of years.

Imagine you are in school, learning about different types of rocks when all of a sudden the classroom starts shaking and books start falling off the shelves. Your teacher tells you to bend down and cover your head. You are scared and have no idea what is happening. The shaking only lasts for 15 seconds but it feels longer. The shaking finally stops and you are able to run out of the school building to safety. Outside, your teacher tells you that you just experienced an earthquake.

An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground. This sudden shaking is caused by plate tectonics moving either next to each other, away from each other or towards each other. Earthquakes can cause major damage to any area it hits. Recently, an Earthquake occurred on the coast of Alaska. Some buildings were damaged because of the shaking. After the Earthquake hit, there was a Tsunami warning for the entire west coast of the United States. Thankfully, no one was hurt in this natural disaster.

Minnie and Toby are my cats. Minnie is a female cat. She is 14 years old. She has black and white fur with green eyes. She loves to play with toy mice and chase string. Her favorite play time is chasing a red laser. She loves to eat her food and people food as well. She always begs for food when my family and I eat dinner. At night, Minnie always sleeps at the end of bed and loves to be pet.

Toby is a male cat. He is 8 years old. He had orange fur with hazel eyes. Orange cats are known as tabby cats. He loves to lay around and sleep all day. He rarely gets up to play with any of his toys. The only time he gets up is when he wants to eat or stretch, but he always goes back to sleep when he’s done. He loves to cuddle on people, especially my mom. He will stare at my mom until she puts a blanket on herself so he can fall asleep on her lap. Toby also loves to lick people or give kisses as my family says. At night, he is always getting himself into trouble. He is not allowed in anyone’s bedroom because he knocks things down. Instead he knocks things down in the living room until someone keeps him company at night.

In college, I took classes to become an Earth Science
teacher. Some of these classes required me to go on field trips where I had to
hike. One of these field trips included hiking up a mountain that was 3,352
feet high. The name of this mountain is Ampersand Mountain. Before this hike, I
had never climbed a mountain that was this tall. I was extremely nervous and
scared to climb this mountain. The hike started at 10 am. I was with 12 other
geology students and my professor on this hike. Most of the other students were
experienced hikers and were able to hike up the mountain easily. For the first
hour of the hike, the hiking trail was flat. Then the elevation started to
increase. Many of the other students I was with hiked up the mountain very
fast. There were about 3 other students that had a challenging time hiking up
the mountain like me. Those 3 students and I decided to hike up the mountain
together and help each other. At about 12:30 pm, 2 1/2 hours into the hike, I
wanted to give up. I was exhausted and very sweaty. The other 3 students I was
hiking with encouraged me to keep going and gave me a pep talk. I am glad I
listened to them and continued up the mountain. After a 3 1/2-hour hike I
finally reached the top. The view from the top of the mountain was incredible
and breathtaking. From the top I could see valleys, lakes, and other Adirondack
mountains. At this moment I was glad I did not give up. I made some of the
greatest friends from this trip. The hike was extremely tough and difficult,
but it was one of the best experiences I have ever been through.
