Participants will use virtual response pads during the Webinar as John demonstrates through interactive examples how games and audience response pads can help you know what your audience knows and how you can use that information. We will also show you how you can use a game to deliver information effectively to your audience while keeping them engaged in the learning process.

I am making final preparations for my two presentations at EMS Expo. During my presentation, Online Education Trends for Emergency Responders, I will dispel the myth of free for vendors, hospitals, and training providers to connect with EMS professionals. Sure free CE and free food is always welcome, but it does not build a tribe. Free does not build a long and collaborative connection. EMS professionals want to belong to a bigger movement, connect with other EMS professionals from near and far, interact directly with subject matter experts and EMS “celebrities,” and collaborate with one another to learn, solve problems, and improve the profession.

What do you think about the notion of free? Do you feel connected with the organizations and vendors that give you free food and free CE? Is my premise, connections and collaboration, more meaningful and useful than free?

Point-of-use elearning is training delivered at the moment the user is about to start a process, initiate a skill, or otherwise engage in a technique. Rogue Medic illustrates point-of-use training in a recent blog post about Dopamine administration. He describes how drip dosage charts were attached as stickers to individual bags of Dopamine. Putting the dosage chart on the bag of Dopamine eliminates the need for the user to consult other charts, apps, or protocols. It also eliminates the need for remember Dopamine dosage calculations. Twenty paramedic instructors could tell me twenty different methods to remember how to calculate a Dopamine dosage.

Point-of-Use Elearning can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Some of my ideas:

1. Training for users the first time they log into electronic scheduling software.

2. Instructions on special documentation considerations is triggered when a user selects a specific provider impression, such as cardiac arrest.

3. Guidelines for use of a social networking site.

What are your ideas for Point-of-Use training in elearning?

Synchronous elearning is a concept for a type of delivery that has students receiving training as it is delivered by the subject matter expert/instructor. A text chat between an instructor and a group of students is a synchronous learning program. Other types of synchronous elearning include:

1. Webinar delivered to a live audience using a tool like GoToWebinar or Elluminate.

2. Audio conference call using a tool like TalkShoe or BlogTalk radio.

3. Virtual office hours using video or text chat.

Many synchronous elearning programs are recorded for later rebroadcast. For example, the EMSEduCast is recorded using a Skype Conference call, Audacity audio software, and broadcast live using TalkShoe.com. Live listeners can hear the audio, text chat with the hosts and one another, and be added to the audio if they call in with a phone (instead of listening on the web). The recording of the call is then uploaded to a website for delivery through an RSS feeder, iTunes, or audio streaming.

What are other uses for synchronous elearning? What tools do you use for synchronous delivery? Or what tool would you like to learn more about?

Q: Did you get a Google Wave invite?

A: Yes, I was invited by @PhilBaumann. He was kind enough to invite me after he received an invitation. I asked him for an invite and he did. Thanks Phil. As I understand it he was one of the 100,000 invites. Phil has a cool blog and is someone I have followed on Twitter for some time.

Q: Can you invite me to Google Wave?

A: I cannot invite anyone, at least for now. I am able to connect with other Wave users, but I can’t invite other Wave users. I am not sure why this is or when it will change. Sorry. If you want my Google Wave contact information send me a DM.

Q: Is Google Wave cool?

A: The coolest feature I have observed so far is the real time observation of what other users in the Wave are typing. @NeilMcD and I started a Wave about creating podcasts that are accessible to all. Watching him type increased the pace of the conversation above a normal text chat.

Q: How are you going to use Google Wave?

A: Not sure yet. My focus is elearning for emergency responders. I think the best application for me will be collaboration to create elearning programs. A Wave could be used to narrow a topic, collaborate on objectives with a subject matter expert, share resources (links, files, etc) for the project, and continue information exchange throughout the project. I currently use BaseCamp from @37signals for project management. Project components get a bit disconnected by having them in different tabs – to-dos, milestones, and files. A Wave has the potential to put all those pieces in one place.

Q: Is Wave more like Twitter or Facebook?

Neither. It is more like a combination of text chat, email, and project management software.

Q: How do you navigate a Wave?

A: So far I have learned that I can scroll and arrow key through a Wave. The space bar (very handy) will move me to the next unread message in the wave. All of this is dependent on good functioning of the Wave. During my first use of Wave updates were very slow. When Wave is working well new content appears quickly and can be navigated to easily. The ability to playback a Wave is definitely cool.

Q: What else can you tell me about Wave?

A: If you are not working on a dual monitor desktop yet you should be. I generally use monitor one for work I am doing and monitor two for keeping an eye on social networking sites or a Wave that I am participating.

Q: So really, can you get me a Wave invite?

A: Really I can’t. Sorry. I will write a post here when that changes after first announcing on Twitter (you can follow me on Twitter, @gfriese).

Q: Is Google Wave one word or two?

A: I am not sure.

Q: Have you ever surfed for real?

A: No, but I did a bit of boggie boarding on the Jersey Shore this past summer. I have also done a bit of wind surfing in northern Wisconsin. I don’t think either activity has prepared me for Google Wave.

I have been invited to join a blog network for EMS and fire bloggers. I am honored to be invited to the blog network, but I don’t know much about blog networks so I contacted my friend Jim Kukral. Jim is an internet business and marketing expert. Listen to Jim, the Biz Web Coach, speak with me (Greg Friese) about blog networks. During our conversation Jim:

Defines a blog network

Describes benefits of blog networks

Explains cautions to joining a blog network

Introduces the concept of having a signature product

Jim has owned a blog network, blogged personally and professionally since the earliest days of blogging, and regularly advises businesses on web business development. At the end of the conversation Jim and I discuss the importance of having a signature product for a blogger to generate revenue. Signature products include ebooks, premium content, membership programs, and elearning courses. Jim – an expert in online business development – is partnering with me – an expert in emergency responder elearning and education – to create elearning opportunities that you, as an expert, can sell as your “own signature content.” Learn about how you can create, distribute, and sell elearning programs in your area of expertise.
