Class Descriptions

Working with Tulips: Hands On

$175 per person

In this hands on workshop, you will learn how to properly process and use tulips. You will see how we choose good quality product to use. Best of all you will leave with a tulip arrangement made by YOU!

Hand-Tied Arrangements: Hands On

$175 per person

This class focuses on the Biedermeier style of hand-tied arrangements. You will learn proper technique on how to design an arrangement in your hand to be placed in a vase. Biedermeier is a style originating in Germany during the early 1800’s. It’s characterized by restraint, conventionality, and utilitarianism. You will take home your design to show off to friends and family.

Contemporary Tropical: Hands On

$175 per person

Want to learn how to pick out the freshest tropical flowers? In this workshop you will do just that. We will teach you a contemporary style of design that you will be able to easily emulate at home. You’ll leave with your very own arrangement.

Non-Floral Design: Hands On

$175 per person

Learn to use succulents, foliage, rocks, branches, moss, herbs and more to create earthly designs. You will take home your own unique arrangement at the end of the workshop.

Kitchen Tools in Floral Design: Demo

$175 per person

In this lecture class we will demonstrate what tools in your kitchen you can use to prepare and arrange flowers. A little field trip to one of our wholesalers is on the syllabus for this class. This class is for the Do-It-At-Home type person. You won’t be leaving empty handed.

Tricks of the Trade: Demo

$175 per person

We will show you all that we know, well as much as we can in 2 hours. In this demo class you will be shown proper use of tools, styles of design and other tips and tricks we have learned over the years. Plus, we’ll send you home with something special.

Mother’s Day – Design Your Own Flowers!

On Saturday, May 8th, 2010 we are opening up our studio for kids (and the young at heart) to make their mom a flower arrangement and card!

We invite you, your kids and friends to make your own arrangement and card for mommy (registration required). We will provide flowers, tools, a vase and paper to make your own card. Cost is $40 per person. Do you have four kids? Good news! Groups of 3 or more have a discounted rate of $30 per person. More details are below.

Small is the new Large

Spring, a time of renewal. Spring, a launch of new thoughts and adventures. Spring 2010, playing it safe with the Ben Franklin’s and re-evaluating whats important. Yes, we love to entertain from small dinners to a large soirée. But, has the large event, you know the kind, the one you were invited to that blew your mind yet after you sobered up, you didn’t really remember all the details because they all mushed in your head as being over the top – has this sort of event evaporated into tackyville? Small is the new large in my book. You have a home and I would assume a kitchen and bathroom as well, so why not entertain in the cheapest venue in town? Your own home!!! If you have a back yard you just added bonus space for your next big event. Listen, its easier than you think and far more cost effective and in our times of a down economy it only makes sense, right? So, paint a wall, buy/rent some great dinnerware, re-arrange that furniture, send a GREAT invite (you know, the kind thats spelled out on a chocolate bar or rolled into a seashell), hire a celebrity chef from your favorite restaurant, set the table(s) to the nine’s, get those flowers perfectly placed and that music volume set just right and have fun. Here is what I’m getting at; home event styling. Our favorite thing to do for those of you who are toning it down, yet making a huge impact. I like that flavor of it. It makes sense, its practical, its intimate and its proof that your home is not just for sleeping anymore. I find that a simple, small detail such as homemade cookies for your guests to take for the ride home make a bigger impact for a longer time than does 10,000 white lights hanging from a ceiling of a ballroom. After all, Martha Stewart did it in her horse stables, now thats pretty cool!!!! (note, picture is from MSLO)

An ode to my mom

When I was a kid my mom grew an amaryllis every winter. I like to carry on the same tradition. I’m sure that to many the type of person who grows amaryllis in their home is the same person who lives with 6 longhair rescue cats (and sleeps in the bed with them), watches HSN (occasionally splurging on a cubic zirconia penant), and grocery shops in flannel pajama pants and moccasins. But I am not quite this person. At least not yet. I was just always fascinated (and still am) by the amount of growth that can come from one seemingly lifeless, shriveled bulb. So at the risk of looking like ‘that’ person, here is my 2009/10 effort.

I took this shot last summer. I was walking along Michigan Avenue and came across this monarch butterfly. It was floating around on the breeze and occasionally landing on the blooms of various flowers growing in the sidewalk planters. I stopped and enjoyed a few moments of it’s playful antics, took this photo, and continued on my way. This just reminded me of the value of flowers along our city’s busy streets and pedestrian walkways. It is such a privilege to be able to step aside from the daily bustle and take a reprieve every now and again. This was just that. Thanks Chicago.

This beautiful mass of flowers hangs in the windows of the newest Anthropologie in Block 37 on State Street. They are made of plastic bottles and cups which have been colored and cut into a multitude of different shades and shapes. It encompasses two floors of windows, forming a gigantic circle, and is truly amazing. Check it out.
