I would also like to point out that despite RTD thinking his Dalek elevating up the stairs was original and brilliant, it was done in Remembrance of the Daleks first..

Great analysis, I completely agree...the franchise has a lot going for it, but the sophomoric impulsive mentality of the producers has really hurt.

I haven't seen every episode of SGA, but I've read a bit online about where Season 5 winds up going (I'm catching the show in late-night syndication) so take this with a grain of salt:

I don't know if I agree that SGA had another couple years left in it - but that's mostly because I get the sense that McKay's character arc is wrapped up, and he's always felt like the show's main character to me. Or maybe he was the only character I really liked, I dunno. :)

The fact is this:Mallozi & the Stargate writers are morons. They killed off SGA main characters pathetically(Beckett & Weir especially), they never knew how to write women(& still don't), they kept rehashing old SG1 plots in SGA, they never expanded the main characters' character development in SGA, they made too many Sheppard/McKay stories & nowhere near enough stories of anyone else, they made Sheppard & McKay the heroes in just about every episode & never gave anyone else a chance, & they basically turned Weir from a caring human being into a traitorous replicator. They made it blatantly obvious in "Ghost In The Machine"(SGA's worst episode)that they hated Weir & were glad to get rid of her. If Stargate Atlantis had been written & directed by people who were competent, Stargate Atlantis would still be on & Weir might still be in charge.

While it may not entirely be true that "your Doctor" is the one you grew up with, it can certainly be a great influence on cementing your idea of who and what this character is all about. It certainly is with me.

My PBS (Public Television in America) station re-broadcast each season of Doctor Who about a year after it came out in England, meaning I was watching Sylvester McCoy back before I can even remember. I had quite a bit of access to video tapes (official and unofficial) and books (Target novelizations, anthologies, the humongous behind-the-scenes books, etc), and I too ended up loving and rather eclectically watching the "ghosts" of a program that was no longer being aired in a different country, let alone my own. While Tom Baker was the most readily available (partly due to the sheer number of stories he was in compared to the others), I always seemed to gravitate toward McCoy's Doctor. The darker complexities of his character (especially in his last season), that alien air of mystery; comedy hiding a calculating and sometimes callous mind, introduced to me at an early age and reinforced by the 'New Adventures' line of novels (which I read at a far younger age than I think they were intended), remains permanently ingrained in my mind as the definitive Doctor.

expect a show aimed at a higher age range. Forget romance for the Doc - well, the lovey dovey rose style stuff, anyway. The Vast Toffee (M.N.) is taking the show back to its roots and with his skill this should be a fascinating ride... New theme, too, Danny :) . I am told that the scripts are knockout.....
