President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will, at the invitation of President
Barack Obama, leave for Washington DC early Sunday to participate in a
three-day United States-African Leaders Summit.
President Jonathan will join President Obama and about 50 other
participating African leaders for discussions that are expected to lead to
greater progress in key areas such as expanding trade and investment ties,
promoting inclusive sustainable development and expanding cooperation on
peace and security.
The Summit, which is the first of its kind between an American President
and African heads of state and government, is expected to greatly
strengthen ties between the United States, Nigeria and other African
countries.
In addition to three special sessions on 'Investing in Africa's Future',
'Peace and Regional Stability' and 'Governing the Next Generation', the
summit will also feature side-events such as the United States-Africa
Business Forum which has the objectives of boosting efforts to strengthen
trade and financial ties between the United States and Africa, creating
partnerships that will accelerate job creation, and encouraging even more
American investments in Nigeria and other African countries.
President Jonathan is also scheduled to hold meetings in Washington with
key United States political, security and business leaders on the
sidelines of the summit to discuss the further expansion of bilateral
cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in other areas including
the war against terrorism.
The President will be accompanied to the summit by the Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, the Coordinating Minster of the Economy
and Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Trade
and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu
Nebo and the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.)
He will return home at the conclusion of the summit on Wednesday.

Igbo rap artiste, Mr. Raw has he wishes to be addressed as, has explained that his long silence in the music scene was to enable him develop other new arts in his record label 'Raw Deal Records.'
According to the Raw Deal boss, he explained that since the entertainment industry was growing on a fast pace and people now look up to Nigerian artistes, he decided to step aside to enable him push other young talents into the industry.
He expressed his joy over seeing people now doing what he started which is rapping in the igbo language which he said took people time to really accept when it newly started.
'My major project right now is the artistes I want to push out on my label, Raw Deal. I will release their names when the time is right. I am trying to assist other upcoming artistes to make it entertainment wise,' he disclosed.
'It's a plus, which means we are doing more. I started rapping in Igbo when nobody was doing it. It wasn't that easy then for people to accept it, but now it makes a whole lot of sense. I actually feel entertained seeing other artistes do what I started. I feel great when I see people like Phyno doing what I started,' Mr. Raw, applauded.

Super Eagles: Keshi wants another chance

Coach Stephen Keshi believes returning as the Chief Coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles will give him the opportunity to finish what he has started.
He has therefore expressed the s desire to extend his contract with Nigeria, according PM News.
Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has opened channels of communication with Keshi on the probability of a contract renewal for the Eagles job.
The Executive Committee has given the Acting President, Mike Umeh, the go ahead to convene a meeting of the Emergency Committee to approve details of Keshi's possible re-engagement within the shortest possible time.
Speaking from his base in the USA, Keshi disclosed that
'Yes, I met with Deji Tinubu (a member of NFF board) in Lagos before heading out for the US to see my family.
'It's my country, I am ready to serve. I have started something I would love to finish.'
However, 'Big Boss' Keshi quickly added the working conditions for his new deal have to be better than what he had previously.
'But I cannot work the way I worked last time, it's not possible! All my staff, no!no!!no!! We have to be professional, everybody has to do what they are supposed to do,' the Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach said.
'I cannot be paying another staff salary, when I am not the Nigeria Football Federation. We will see how it goes. If the conditions are met, we will be there, no wahala.'
In the meantime, the NFF has disclosed to Africanfootball.com it will forward a letter of intent for contract renewal this week to Keshi.
Head of a three-man committee for Keshi's contract renewal, Tinubu, who discussed with Keshi last week in Lagos, said: 'We have made tremendous progress.
'We will first send a letter of our intent for a renewal of his contract and expect a reply from him as quickly as possible.
'This would allow us to start working on the terms of contract. We would have our terms and we know he would have his terms, but we would be working in such a way that we would arrive at an agreeable term that would suit both parties and then hopefully he signs.
'We can't put a time limit on this, but we hope we are done with it as quick as possible considering that we have a game in September.'

Africa's richest man and chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has invested $1billion in rice production in Nigeria.

The signing of the $1billion-dollar Rice Investment Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between the Federal Government and Dangote Group held at the State House, Abuja yesterday August 1st

The Minister of Agriculture, Adewunmi Adesina and Alhaji Dangote signed on behalf of the Federal Government and Dangote Group respectively.

Commending Dangote Group, president Jonathan said the investment is the single largest investment ever made in rice production in Africa. He thanked Alhaji Dangote for investing in agriculture and assured him that his investment will be worthwhile.

In less than four years, Nigeria hopes to become a net-exporter of rice. The Dangote Group’s investment in rice will cover five states and contribute additional 1.4 million metric tonnes of Paddy rice.

Alhaji Dangote thanked the President for the consistency of government policies, noting that the current $25 billion-dollar Dangote Cement Company was the result of the consistency of government policies. He assured President Jonathan, “We will continue to work hard and will not disappoint you.”

A native doctor and suspected ritual killer arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command has said that he grinds human heads into powder as charm for ladies who are looking for choice husbands and big contracts.

Olasunkanmi Owolabi, a 43-year-old native of Oyo town, said the concoction is also used as cure for stubborn sores, mental illness, sickle cell anaemia and epilepsy. He also said had planned to establish a specialist native hospital if government gave him the approval. Continue...

Arrested with Owolabi were his two co-travellers, Clement Omodijie and Usman Saliu a.k.a. Alfa. Omodijie, a 54-year-old indigene of Ekpoma, Edo State, says he is married with three children. A grave digger at Gbogbo Cemetery, Ikorodu, Lagos on a monthly salary of N22,000, he said he had worked at the cemetery for five years before he was arrested by SARS operatives.
Saliu, a 31-year-old native doctor from Ilisa town in Osun State and Owolabi’s ally, said he trained as an alfa (Islamic cleric) at Ralwu Islamic School, Ikewu, Osun State where he claimed he spent nine years learning native medicine. A police source said the three had been charged with unlawful possession of human parts.

Owolabi (43), who was arrested on June 22 this year, was said to have requested a human head from Omodijie, saying that he needed the skull to prepare a medicine for his patients. Omodijie obliged Owolabi by exhuming a corpse from one of the graves in the cemetery where he worked and delivering the head to Owolabi.

Upon a tip-off from a member of the public, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, was said to have directed the officer in charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police, to fish out the ritual killers.

Kyari immediately swung into action with his team. He put a call through to Saliu, saying that a human head was urgently needed to save the life of a wealthy patient whose illness had defied orthodox medicine. Saliu asked the detectives to come to Ikorodu for the transaction. But he was arrested as soon as he showed up at the agreed place. The human head he came with was recovered and put in a polythene bag as an exhibit.

confessing his role in the saga omodijie said, “i was content with being a grave digger before i met owolabi in a restaurant in front of the cemetery in gbogbo area of ikorodu. since i met owolabi, my life has not been the same again. I have moved from one problem into another. i was enjoying my n15,000 monthly salary as a grave digger before i met him and he lured me into supplying human heads to him at n4,000 each. “The naked truth is that there is nothing reasonable i have done with the n4,000 per human head that he has been paying me. i used it to drink gin or smoke cigarettes with it. it is the devil’s money. “i hardly fell sick since i was born. but after selling human heads to him, my health has been deteriorating.

I buy drugs as if it is food, making me to spend more money than before. “i was moulding blocks before i secured a job in the cemetery as a grave digger. we were paid on a daily basis. we used wooden or machine moulder. but whichever moulder we used, we charged the owner n500 per bag of cement, which can give one about 40 blocks. if we did three bags, we collected n1,500. “when i got a job in the cemetery, i was happy because it is not as hard as moulding blocks.

The salary was small but i was enjoying it. the grave was shallow or deep, depending on the owner of the corpse and the way he or she wants it to be buried. “my trouble started a day i went to buy food opposite the cemetery. that was where i met owolabi and he said there was something he had wanted to tell me. He asked whether i was a worker in the cemetery and i said yes. he said i should give him a human head and i asked him what he meant. he said the head of a corpse already buried. “we have cemetery rules which forbid us from doing such a thing. i told him that i would not be able to do that, and he left. but thereafter, each day i went to the restaurant to buy food, he would accost me with the same request. i insisted that i would not do it because i did not want to lose my job, but he said it was better to sell human parts to him than allowing them to waste. “I summoned courage to ask him what he wanted to do with human heads and other parts. he said he was a native doctor and alfa, and that he wanted to use it to make medicine.

He said he would grind it into powder and mix it with certain herbs for pregnant women to drink in order to deliver their babies without complications or operation. he also said that he grinds human heads and mixes them with the powders some ladies carry in their handbags, saying that it helps those that are looking for choice husbands and big government contracts or companies’ lpos to secure them without stress. he also said that it can cure sickle cell anemia, among other ailments. “I told him that i didn’t have any but if i got one, i would call him.

A few days later, i called him on the phone and told him that i had got some. he asked me where i kept it and i told him that i kept one in a nearby bush. he asked me to bring it to my house so that he would come later to collect it. “he knows my house because he had followed me to my house several times after we met and became friends. he gave me n4,000 for the first head he came to collect from my house. the following day, he bought another one for n4,000.” asked how he obtained the heads he sold to owolabi, omodijie said: “The graves where i normally bring out the skulls from are shallow, and coffins are not used for the corpses brought there because of religion or financial status of the owners. it is cheaper to bury a corpse in a shallow grave than to do so in a deep, cemented or marbled one. “most burials done in shallow graves are temporary. that is why that section of the cemetery is called the temporary site. after some months, the corpses buried in shallow graves are excavated and burnt. that was why owolabi i should not allow the skulls to waste and that i should sell them to him instead.” “four of us work in the cemetery, but the other workers did not know that i was smuggling out human skulls and other parts to sell to native doctors. it was only two heads i had sold before detectives from sars arrested me. “there is no useful thing i can say i did with the money.

I was deceived by the devil. i am pleading for forgiveness because i did not kill a l anyone to sell their heads. i sold the skulls of corpses already buried and had decayed. i did not know that it would land me in this trouble.” owolabi on his part said: “i am an alfa and a native doctor. but i am not yet registered. i finished my arabic studies in kwara state about 13 years ago and relocated to ikorodu to work as a native doctor. i have the ambition of building a native hospital if the government gives me an approval. “I started by praying for sick people. last year, i met this cemetery worker (omodijie) and told him about the products (human parts) they were wasting. i learnt about using human skull to do powerful charms and medicine after travelling to kano, kaduna and other parts of the north. “in kano, i met a yoruba native doctor who told me that if i mixed ground human bones with soap and some herbs, it would bring luck for my clients or patients.

He said it could also cure chronic and stubborn sores and help pregnant women to deliver without complications or operation. it can also cure madness and other terrible diseases that defy orthodox solution. “women who are looking for husbands can also mix the ground bones with their powder. when they see a man they like, especially if they want a husband, they would rob the powder and talk to the man and the man will fall for them. it can also bring good luck and help job seekers to secure employment. “it can make somebody to become rich. it can cure epilepsy. a woman can also bath with it and men will be begging her to marry them. i sell a tablet of the soap for n2,000. it depends on the pocket of the buyer. some buy it for n1,000. I sell it around ikorodu and ajah in lagos. “saliu had told me to help him to get a human head and i collected one for him from the cemetery worker. he gave me n4,000 and i gave it to the cemetery worker that supplied the products. “when sars operatives arrested him, he led them to my house and i was also arrested. i knew the grave digger to be a worker in gbogbo cemetery at ikorodu. when he wanted to throw away some (human) parts, i told him that i needed them. i normally gave him n4,000 per skull.” saliu said: “i am a native doctor. i also spent nine years in ralwu islamic school, ikewu, osun state. i pray for women who are looking for husbands. i collected whatever amount they gave me. when the prayer worked for them, they would come to thank me with anything they liked. “i usually lock myself up to pray for my clients for between seven and 21 days, depending on the personality involved. they paid whatever amount they liked.

The only money they were required to deposit with me was the one to buy certain things that i would use to prepare the things i would use for the prayers.” asked why he had to use human skulls for his prayers, he said: “i had not used it before. one of my brothers came and met me in the house one day and told me that he went to ila-orangun in osun state to do rituals for money but the person he met told him that it would require a human skull and certain leaves. “when i met my brother, owolabi, we talked about how to get the human head. he told me that he himself used to do the same medicine with human heads and some herbs and even made medicinal soap with it. he asked me to go and bring money and he would help me get a human skull. “i asked owolabi where he would get it from and he said he had a link at the gbogbo cemetery in ikorodu. after six to seven months, my brother called me while i was still in bed and asked whether the human head was ready. i told him to let me ask owolabi about it. when i asked owolabi, he told me to come and meet him. when i met him, he said it would cost n18,000, saying that he bought it for n12,000 from the cemetery man. “a friend of shina came and gave him n15,000. owolabi took n10,000 and gave me n2,000 only, and told me that he would use the remaining n3,000 to pay for the transportation of the human head to the final destination.

On tattoos and piercings: “I don’t even like wearing earrings. I haven’t worn any earrings for about five years. I can wear them in a movie but I’m not a fan. I don’t think it adds any extra beauty to a girl. I just don’t like it, it makes me feel uncomfortable and as if I’m overdressed. It makes my face look busy and I don’t like it. I like jewellery; I love wrist watches and rings too. I do not have any tattoo mainly because of the pain. I believe I have a beautiful skin, imagine how I always brag about my legs and I put a tattoo on it, why would I do that? I would not mind getting a tattoo, writing my mother’s first name somewhere on my body but it is just not my style. It is not something I think about. I see it on people and some of them are really nice because it is artistic.”

On her photos: “I have not heard of anybody who would go to the beach wearing jeans and a jacket. I love going to the beach and anytime I go there, I love wearing a bikini to swim. Recently, my friend had an event and the after party was at a club. In the club, I was telling my friends that I don’t know how people do it, coming to club to have fun. To start with, you cannot make a conversation with someone because you are screaming on top of your voice. I was there drinking water, I don’t smoke and everybody was looking at me as if I was a boring person. In essence, the night life is not for me because it does not make me happy. I don’t think you have to go to club to have a nice time. I believe having a nice time depends on the quality of people around you.”

On bleaching reports: “I can’t blame anyone, ignorance sets in because people don’t get to see us one on one so they rely on what we put out for them to see. For example, anytime I post a picture online, I edit it and it tends to make me look lighter. On my Instagram account, there are pictures where I am quite dark; they are for magazine covers and I don’t do anything to them, but anytime I am posting a picture, I always use filter on Instagram and they make me look lighter. In my new movie, I look very dark and that is my real complexion. I have come to realise that people love stories like that. I guess I am the cause of the rumours but I would still keep editing my pictures before putting them online.”

Police arrest killer of wealthy Lagos business woman

The prime suspect in the killing of 39 year old Lizzy Njideka Nzewe, Kelechi Williams, an indigene of Umorji, Anambra state, has been arrested in Cote D'Ivoire.

Kelechi, 33, is accused of strangling Mrs Nzewe to death at her Green Estate Amuwo Odofin resident in Lagos on Monday July 21st. She was until her death a manager at Edmark Nigeria limited, and was a divorced mother of 4. She was in a relationship with the killer as at the time of her murder.

Police claim Kelechi is a serial killer with a criminal past. He was formerly based in South Africa where he was declared wanted by the South African police after committing a series of crimes. He fled SA for Ghana where he lived until he met Mrs Nzewe and started shuttling between Ghana and Nigeria to spend time with his older lover.

According to reports, things between the lovebirds was going well until Kelechi proposed marriage to Mrs Njideka which she turned down. He decided then to kill her and steal from her.

On the day of the murder on Monday July 21st, late Mrs Lizzy Njideka was said to have gone to the bank with Kelechi to withdraw N4million for a holiday trip she was planning for herself and her 4 kids abroad. After withdrawing the money, the couple went back to the woman's house (pictured above). Nobody knows what transpired between them but around 2.30am early the next morning, Kelechi came out of the house, asked the security guard to open the gate for him and drove out with Mrs Nzewe's Range Rover SUV. The security guard said he didn't try to stop Kelechi because he's a well known guest at the home who had often driven his madam's car.

Many hours later, the woman's body was found strangled in her home. Kelechi also allegedly took her $50,000, valuables worth over N8million as well as her mobile phones and ATM cards.

Relatives who discovered her body immediately contacted the Nigeria Police Area E command in Festac town who examined her body and thereafter deposited her corpse in a mortuary. Then they launched a full scale investigation.

After committing the crime, Kelechi fled to Ghana and then to Cote d' Voire. He was arrested in the country on July 29th by the Cote d Voire police command following a smooth collaborative effort by the Nigerian, Ghanian and Cote D Voire police force. He has been extradited to Ghana and will soon be extradited to Nigeria where he will face murder charge

15 Killed & 90 Wounded as Israel Shells UN School in Gaza

GAZA CITY (dpa/NAN) ― At least 15 people died and 90 were wounded on Wednesday when Israeli tanks shelled a UN school in the northern Gaza Strip where scores of civilians reportedly took refuge.

The al-Hussein school in the Jabalia refugee camp, which is run by the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), was shelled for the second time in less than a week, witnesses said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said in Tel Aviv that a preliminary inquiry found that militants fired mortar shells from near the school at Israeli soldiers in the area, who “returned fire to the origin.’’

Earlier in the day, in the same area, five Israeli soldiers were injured by a mortar shell.

Palestinian militants fired at them with rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles as they were being evacuated, the Israeli military said.

Gaza Health Ministry Spokesman, Ashraf al-Qedra said at least 54 Palestinians were killed following hours of intense shelling and bombardments since midnight.

On the 23rd day of the Israeli offensive in Gaza the death toll there has reached 1,283.

More than 7,170 people have been wounded. Reports say most of the dead in the densely populated ports enclave are civilians.

Also 53 Israeli soldiers, two Israeli civilians and one Thai national have been killed, and hundreds have been wounded the report added.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was meeting with his security cabinet, a Turkish mediator arrived in Israel to attempt to mediate a truce between Israel and Palestinian factions.

Mohamed Deif, the elusive chief of al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ armed wing, declared there will be no ceasefire with Israel until its offensive ends and the blockade on Gaza is lifted.

He was reported to have said, “Palestinian armed resistance is stronger and more powerful than the army of the enemy.’’

Israel’s campaign aimed at curbing rocket attacks from Gaza has become its 2006 second Lebanon war.

In early 2009, the 22-day-long Gaza conflict killed up to 1,444 Palestinians, according to Gaza authorities, and 13 Israelis.

The Israeli military said that Palestinian fighters have launched at least 80 rockets at Israel since on Tuesday.

Air raid sirens and several booms were heard in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening, while Beersheba and southern Israel came under rocket fire on Wednesday morning and afternoon.

In an overnight airstrike on a house in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, 10 members of one Palestinian family were killed and 25 wounded, al-Qedra said.

At least seven people were killed in a house bombed in eastern Gaza City.

Most of Gaza’s 1.8 million residents are without electricity after a power plant was shelled and caught fire on Tuesday.

The damage was expected to take months to fix, UN officials said it would affect hospitals, water supplies and sewage treatment systems.

Meanwhile, El Salvador, Peru and Chile recalled their ambassadors to Tel Aviv to protest the Gaza bombardments.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry expressed “deep disappointment’’ with the “hasty decision,’’ charging that this decision encouraged Hamas.

Ebola discoverer says would sit next to victim on train

The scientist who helped discover the Ebola virus said the outbreak in west Africa was unlikely to trigger a major epidemic outside the region, adding he would happily sit next to an infected person on a train.
But Professor Peter Piot told AFP that a 'really bad' sense of panic and lack of trust in the authorities in west Africa had contributed to the world's largest-ever outbreak.
The Belgian scientist, now based in Britain, urged officials to test experimental vaccines on people with the virus so that when it inevitably returns, the world is prepared.
Since March, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned that the crisis is set to get worse and that there is no overarching strategy to handle the crisis.
Piot co-discovered the Ebola virus as a 27-year-old researcher in 1976.
He is now director of the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was previously executive director of the United Nations' HIV/AIDS programme UNAIDS.
Even if someone carrying Ebola were to fly to Europe, the United States or another part of Africa, 'I don't think that will give rise to a major epidemic,' he told AFP in an interview on Wednesday.
'Spreading in the population here, I'm not that worried about it,' he said.
- 'I was scared' -
His insights are born of deep experience in the field, highlighted by his impressive CV and the mementos from around the world that dot his office in London.
Piot helped identify Ebola when the laboratory where he was working in Antwerp was sent a blood sample from a Catholic nun who had died in what was then Zaire and is now DR Congo.
From the blood, they isolated a new virus which was later confirmed to be Ebola.
He later went to Yambuku, a village in Zaire's Equateur province, where an epidemic had taken hold.
'People were devastated because in some villages, one in 10, one in eight people could die from Ebola,' he said.
'I was scared but I was 27 so you think you are invincible.'
Researchers noticed most of the infections were among women aged between 20 and 30 and clustered around a clinic where they went for pre-natal consultations.
It turned out that the virus was being transmitted through a handful of needles which were being reused to give injections to pregnant women.
There were also a string of outbreaks linked to funerals.
'Like in any culture, someone who dies is washed, the body is laid out but you do this with bare hands, without gloves. Someone who died from Ebola, that person is covered with virus because of vomitus, diarrhoea, blood,' he said.
'That's how then you get new outbreaks and the same thing is happening now in west Africa.'
- 'Fear a driving force' -
He said recent history in Liberia and Sierra Leone was complicating efforts to tackle the deadly virus, which kills as many as nine-tenths of the people it infects.
'Let's not forget that these countries are coming out of decades of civil war,' he said.
'Liberia and Sierra Leone are now trying to reconstruct themselves so there is a total lack of trust in authorities, and that combined with poverty and very poor health services I think is the explanation why we have this extensive outbreak now.'
Staff are also often poorly equipped with no protective gear or gloves, he added.
While there are a couple of experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments which have shown promising results in animals, these need to be tested on people, he added.
'I think that the time is now, at least in capitals, to offer this kind of treatment for compassionate use but also to find out if it works so that for the next epidemic, we are ready,' he said.
'It is quite clear that new viruses will emerge all the time and Ebola will come again hopefully not to this extent.'

Another female suicide bomber blown up in Kano

The police on Monday confirmed the death of four people, including a suspected female suicide bomber, in an explosion at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Mega Station in Hotoro, Kano.
The statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said the suspected bomber slipped into a crowd of people buying kerosene at the station at about 10am and detonated the bomb.

'The suicide bomber and three others have been confirmed dead, eight persons are injured and rushed to the Hospital.
'It is instructive to note that the mega station did not go ablaze due to the security barricade put in place by the policemen on duty at the station.
'Security forces have cordoned off the scene and police bomb disposal experts are sweeping the area,' the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the force spokesman as saying in the statement.
It said investigation into the incident had begun, while security operatives had intensified patrol of the city
